Jean Moulin and the French Resistance during World War II
Known today as one of the most prominent leaders of the French Resistance during World War II, Jean Moulin was given by General Charles de Gaulle the seemingly impossible task of unifying the different movements of the Resistance during the war. Through countless difficulties, he succeeded in forming one solid resistance that included both right-winged Royalists and left-winged Socialists. This research analyzes the reasons for which the French Resistance began, the impact Jean Moulin had on the Resistance, and finally his betrayal to the Gestapo on the 21st of June, 1943
Exploration of the Role of a Foster Parent
One of the most damaged areas in American society today is the foster care system. There are many factors that contribute to the issues within the system, and change seems to occur very slowly for those who suffer the most. One of the key roles meant to uplift those in the foster care system is the role of the foster parent who is assigned to both provide and care for the children placed in their home. However, these responsibilities often prove much harder than many foster parents expect. As a result, some foster children fall even further behind. In order to understand the difficulties foster parents face within the foster care system, one must first know how the temporary parent role fits into the overall foster care structure. At that point, their responsibilities can be better understood and the challenges within their roles may be more effectively addressed
Slavery after Liberation: the Development of Child Trafficking in West Africa
Slavery may seem to have been abolished in the world, yet is still a persistent trade that plagues modern society. West Africa has specifically had issues with the trafficking of children. There have been recent cases in Togo, Nigeria, and Benin. Furthermore, the chocolate plantations in the Ivory Coast have been proven to use child slaves, and child soldiers were very common during the violent conflict in Sierra Leone from 1991 until 2002. This research examines how the current issue of child trafficking and slavery in West Africa began and developed. This paper demonstrates that the current trade can be traced back to the colonial economy, the evolution of the slave trade, and cultural expectations. These roots have cultivated a demand for and dependence on cheap labor. While the laws, the perpetrators, and the victims of modern slavery have changed, the structures have remained very similar. In the same way, while the identity of abolitionists has changed, the style of advocating for abolition has remained similar
The Effect of Mentoring Programs on the Self- Efficacy of Mentors and Mentees
Much of past research on mentoring programs focuses heavily on the benefits afforded to those being mentored—the mentees. However, we as researchers were interested to see what sort of effect a mentoring program would have on the mentors as well. The researchers developed and implemented a mentoring program utilizing college-aged mentors and female 6th and 7th grade mentees. The researchers hypothesized that the self-efficacy of both the mentors and mentees would significantly increase through participation in the mentoring program. Research was collected through a pre- and post-test of self-efficacy, prior to and at the conclusion of an eight-week group-mentoring program. Topics covered during the program include, but were not limited to: body image, self-esteem, boundaries, healthy relationships, and communication skills. The means of the self-efficacy rating were compared to determine if there was a significant increase in the self-efficacy of the mentors. Results will be presented as well as recommendations for future mentoring program development
Search for Unbound Be-15 States in the 3n+Be-12 Channel
Background: Be-15 is expected to have low-lying 3/2(+) and 5/2(+) states. A first search did not find the 3/2(+) [A. Spyrou et al., Phys. Rev. C 84, 044309 (2011)]; however, a resonance in Be-15 was populated in a second attempt and determined to be unbound with respect to Be-14 by 1.8(1) MeV with a tentative spin-parity assignment of 5/2(+) [J. Snyder et al., Phys. Rev. C 88, 031303(R) (2013)]. Purpose: Search for the predicted Be-15 3/2(+) state in the three-neutron decay channel. Method: A two-proton removal reaction from a 55 MeV/u C-17 beam was used to populate neutron-unbound states in Be-15. The two-, three-, and four-body decay energies of the Be-12+ neutron(s) detected in coincidence were reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to extract the resonance and decay properties from the observed spectra. Results: The low-energy regions of the decay energy spectra can be described with the first excited unbound state of Be-14 (E-x = 1.54 MeV, E-r = 0.28 MeV). Including a state in Be-15 that decays through the first excited Be-14 state slightly improves the fit at higher energies though the cross section is small. Conclusions: A Be-15 component is not needed to describe the data. If the 3/2(+) state in Be-15 is populated, the decay by three-neutron emission through Be-14 is weak
Cathodoluminescence Dependence On Feldspar Mineral Structure And Implications For Forensic Geology
A collection of 42 feldspar mineral samples from a wide geographical range of North America was examined by cold-cathode cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy. Characteristic wavelength peaks, which were determined to be independent of geographic origin, were associated with each feldspar phase. Most of these peaks were attributed to previously assigned Mn2+ and Fe3+ luminescent centers and structural defects. An unattributed set of infrared (IR) peaks was observed in many samples; one uncommon ultraviolet (UV) peak was observed in samples from two locations. The peak centroids associated with the Mn2+ and Fe3+ luminescent centers vary with stoichiometric changes in the K-Na-Ca composition of the feldspars. For both alkali and plagioclase feldspars, shifts in CL peak centroids correlate well with lattice size, as measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additional analyses of the feldspar samples by electron microprobe analysis (EMP), particle-induced X-ray emission spectroscopy (PIXE), energy-dispersive micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (mu XRF), and/or laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were conducted for confirmation of elemental composition. These results demonstrate the potential of CL spectroscopy, a relatively nondestructive analytical technique, to facilitate rapid discrimination between feldspar samples. The addition of CL spectroscopy of feldspars to existing forensic analytical protocols for geologic materials has the potential to provide support for casework, both to discriminate sources in a forensic comparison, as well as to constrain the provenance of an unknown sample
