No full textPart I of this Comment examines the history of absentee voting in the United States, from its origins in the Civil War to the present day. Part II explains the Texas absentee voting process with emphasis on the law in question in the Ray case. Part III demonstrates how the court's ruling in the Ray case applied the standards of election law jurisprudence. Part IV examines the limited prevalence of voter fraud and offers views for measuring fraud. Part V will analyze the effects of absentee voting and fraud in the 2008 elections and will highlight future initiatives being debated for the Texas Election Code. Part VI offers suggestions for reforming the Texas absentee voting system to ensure the security of more elderly and disabled voters
The H-2B Visa: Is This How We Treat a Guest (Comment)
No full textThis comment will focus on an incident in Mississippi, in which 6 workers were held hostage by armed guards hired by their same employer, and try to decipher why the legal routes for H2-B visa holders are so limited. With the H2-A enforcement mechanisms and legal options as a guideline, it seems that the rules and regulations for proper implementation of H-2B are in place. Part II of this comment focuses on the history of guest workers in the United States, and how the law has grown to include guest workers. Part III examines how modem slavery and trafficking are all connected to the plight of many of the guest workers brought to the United States. Part IV looks at the unique outlets for guest workers to learn about their rights and obtain legal help, but also shows that this is not an avenue available to all guest workers. Part V considers two ways to fix immigration laws so that widespread violations cease to occur
