    The Effectiveness of Online Learning on Nontraditional Students\u27 Experiences in Online Modalities

    This qualitative descriptive research aimed to examine and determine the effectiveness of online education by addressing the challenges of the nontraditional student experience while taking fully online asynchronous courses versus synchronous ones. The study strived to determine new approaches to enhance online education and increase teaching presence and community in asynchronous delivery, to help online faculty, administrators, and college leaders better accommodate nontraditional students toward better and quality learning. Data were collected from survey research questions that the researcher created and validated through a panel of experts. The survey included demographic information and open-ended questionnaires. The researcher conducted one-on-one semi-structured interviews with nontraditional graduate students (N= 8). Further, the researcher of this study conducted a focus group interview with graduate professors (N= 5) to obtain an in-depth understanding of nontraditional students\u27 experiences in online modalities. The study was guided by the community of inquiry theoretical framework. A qualitative descriptive study was selected to acquire a thick description of students\u27 experiences in their own voices. The unit of analysis was qualitative data from semi-structured and focus group interviews. Manual coding with thematic analysis was employed to construct codes and themes. The study discovered six major emerging themes. This study added value to the effectiveness of online learning by providing rich descriptions through the views of nontraditional students and professors. It contributed to online learning advancement and innovation by adding the flexibility element to synchronous and asynchronous online modes of delivery, resulting in adult learner satisfaction and success in online learning

    Differentiation of Andean and Mesoamerican accessions in a proposed core collection of grain amaranths

    Grain amaranths are made up of three New World species of pseudo-cereals with C4 photosynthesis from the dicotyledonous family Amaranthaceae and the genus Amaranthus. They originate in two ecoregions of the Americas, namely, the inter-Andean valleys of South America and the volcanic axis and lowlands of Mexico and Central America. These correspond to two centers of domestications for Andean and Mesoamerican crops, with one cultivated species found in the first region and two found in the latter region. To date, no core collection has been made for the grain amaranths in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) germplasm system. In this study, our objective was to create a core for the 2,899 gene bank accessions with collection site data by town or farm site of which 1,090 have current geo-referencing of latitude and longitude coordinates. We constituted the core with 260 genotypes of Amaranthus, which we evaluated with 90 single-nucleotide polymorphism markers. Our goal was to distinguish between Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools of amaranths, including the cultivated species and three possible progenitor or wild relative ancestors along with two more species in an outgroup. Population structure, clustering, and discriminant analysis for principal components showed that Andean species Amaranthus caudatus and Amaranthus quitensis shared fewer alleles with Mesoamerican species Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus hypochondriacus, compared to each group individually. Amaranthus hybridus was a bridge species that shared alleles with both regions. Molecular markers have the advantage over morphological traits at quickly distinguishing the Andean and Mesoamerican cultivars and have the added benefit of being useful for following inter-species crosses and introgression

    Abundance of Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and Megacopta cribraria (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) in Soybean in Areas with Few Previous Sightings in Tennessee

    Halyomorpha halys (Stål) and Megacopta cribraria (Fabricius) are two exotic invasive pests that have invaded the United States in recent years. Halyomorpha halys can damage various fruits, vegetables, and field crops, such as soybean and corn, while Megacopta cribraria only attacks soybean and kudzu, a weed species. They are currently found in southeastern states and threaten soybean and other crops grown in the region. This study evaluated the seasonal abundance of H. halys and M. cribraria in soybeans in 2016 and 2017 in two counties in the central region of Tennessee, where both species had either a few sightings or none that were recorded when this research was being planned. Lures and sweep sampling were used to monitor H. halys, and sweep sampling was used to monitor M. cribraria. Halyomorpha halys was first detected in samples in late July. Their numbers increased in early to mid-September, reached the economic threshold in late Sept, and then started to decline. Megacopta cribraria was first detected in mid to late July, increased their populations in September, but did not reach the economic threshold and declined mid-October. Our results showed the seasonal abundances of H. halys and M. cribraria and their establishment in the central region of Tennessee
