    Teaching Percussionists in a Mixed Instrument Beginning Band Setting: Method Book Supplement

    The purpose of this project is to improve music instruction for middle school beginning percussion students in a mixed instrument band setting by using instructional materials and video training. A secondary purpose of the project was to investigate the different instruction given to percussion students in comparison to other students in a mixed instrument band setting. In a classroom with usually just one teacher present, the project addresses the problem of delivering equal instruction across a variety of instruments. In order to give students a solid foundation in percussion instruments and their common elements, the project investigates the development of additional materials focused on improving percussion skills. This project is important because it acknowledges the differences that can occur when percussionists receive less instruction and attention due to their broad instrument group. This project also strives to create additional resources and methods of instruction techniques percussionists receive due to the diversity of their instruments. This project also emphasizes how critical it is to encourage a passion for music that lasts a lifetime and to provide aspiring percussionists with the tools they need to pursue their musical dreams

    The Impact of COVID-19 on International Students’ Perceptions in ePortfolio Use at Historically Black University

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of international students during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Historically Black University in the Southeast region of the United States. Mixed methods approach was used in this study to examine students\u27 perceptions giving us the chance to expand our understanding of online learning in emergency situations. The study’s sample size was 102 respondents and their responses were categorized into positive responses, negative responses, and neutral responses. The result enabled the development of some suggestions to make sure that the standard of the academic experience would not be harmed post-epidemic when ePortfolio is more widely and consistently used than it was before the epidemic. The study findings reveal significant support and positive perceptions regarding ePortfolio use through emergency situations like the COVID-19 pandemic

    The cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) penetratin (PEN) has garnered attention for its potential to enter tumor cells. However, its translocation mechanism and lack of selectivity remain debated. This study investigated PEN’s insertion into healthy cells (H-) and cancer cells (C-) using micromolar concentrations and various techniques. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine PEN’s location in the lipid bilayer at different lipid-to-peptide ratios. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential analysis were used to measure the lipid–PEN complex’s size and charge. The results showed helical PEN particles directly inserted into C- membranes at a ratio of 110, while aggregated particles stayed on H- surfaces. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed PEN insertion in C- membranes. Zeta potential studies revealed highly negative charges for PEN–C- complexes and neutral charges for PEN–H- complexes at pH 6.8. C- integrity remained unchanged at a ratio of 110. Specific lipid-to-peptide ratios with dipalmitoylphosphatidylserine (DPPS) were crucial for direct insertion. These results provide valuable insights into CPP efficacy for targeted drug delivery in cancer cells, considering membrane composition and lipid-to-peptide ratios

    Tweets That Matter: Exploring the Solutions to Maternal Mortality in the United States Discussed by Advocacy Organizations on Twitter

    This study investigated maternal mortality solutions mentioned on Twitter by maternal health advocacy organizations in the United States. Using qualitative content analysis, we examined tweets from 20 advocacy organizations and found that the majority of the tweets focused on policy, healthcare, community, and individual solutions. The most tweeted policy solutions include tweets advocating signing birth equity, paid family leave, Medicaid expansion, and reproductive justice bills, whereas the most tweeted community solutions were funding community organizations, hiring community doulas, and building community health centers. The most tweeted individual solutions were storytelling, self-advocacy, and self-care. These findings provide insights into the perspectives and priorities of advocacy organizations working to address maternal mortality in the United States and can inform future efforts to combat this critical public health issue

    The Effects of Punitive Discipline and Restorative Justice on Black Male Student-Athletes

    Punitive discipline has been utilized in American schools for many years, but restorative justice practices are becoming more common. The researcher examined the literature surrounding punitive discipline and restorative justice practices. The design and purpose of this study was intended to help schools avoid the problems that punitive discipline brings: poor attendance, poor academics due to missing time in the classroom, student distrust of teachers and administrators, discipline gaps, high school dropouts, and the pipeline-to-prison system that has been established inadvertently in high schools throughout the United States. This current study focused on suspensions, both in-school suspension (ISS) and out-of-school suspension (OSS), but not expulsions. Higher tiers of zero-tolerance discipline actions (such as assault, weapons, drugs, or sexual deviance) require expulsion in many schools and are not typically corrected with restorative practices now. A qualitative study was conducted in Tennessee and Texas public high schools to compare the effects of punitive discipline and restorative justice practices on Black male student-athletes. The participants’ rich narratives allows readers to explore the human experience in its full context. This study provides school administrators with additional and current information into the types of discipline methods they may choose to adopt at their schools. This study will be beneficial to high school administrators, teachers, and, ultimately, parents. It highlights the importance of putting the lives of students first by being relational and focusing on the transformation process of administrator’s attitudes, students’ behaviors, and beliefs through the implementation of restorative justice practices

    Deep Imputation of Missing Values in Multivariate Time-Series Health Data

    The imputation of missing values in multivariate time series data has been explored using a few recently proposed deep learning methods. Evaluations of these state-of-the-art methods have been limited to one or two data sets, low missing rates, and completely random missing value types. These limited experimental conditions did not comprehensively benchmark imputation methods on realistic data scenarios with varying missing rates and not-at-random missing types. To address these limitations, this thesis work took a data-centric approach to benchmark state-of-the-art deep imputation methods across five time series health data sets and five experimental conditions. Our extensive analysis revealed that no single imputation method outperformed the others across all five data sets. The imputation performance depends on data types, individual variable statistics, missing value rates, and types. In this context, state-of-the-art methods jointly performed cross-sectional (across variables) and longitudinal (across time) imputations of missing values in time series data. However, variables with high cross-correlation were better imputed by cross-sectional imputation methods alone. In contrast, the ones with time series sensor signals were better imputed by longitudinal imputation methods alone. The findings of this study emphasized the importance of considering the specifics of the data when choosing an appropriate missing value imputation method for multivariate time series data
