Exploring Multimodality in Teaching Writing: A Narrative Inquiry of an English Teacher in an Indonesian Senior High School

Using multimodality in teaching second language writing allows English teachers to creatively combine two or modes in describing what goes on at each stage of the writing process. Studies confirmed that multimodality in teaching English as a foreign language could help to activate classroom atmosphere and inspiring students’ motivation. However, studies focusing on multimodality in teaching writing are still limited. Thus, this study aims at exploring the modes employed by the teacher in teaching writing and investigating how the teacher combined those methods in describing each stage of the writing process. By using narrative inquiry, the researchers obtained the data mainly by using the semi-structured interview. The participant of this study was an English teacher in a high school. The findings stated that a teacher employed modes like visual display, classroom layout, voice quality, gesture, and body movement in teaching writing. The teacher then combined those modes in describing stages of the writing process by designing some activities involving students’ active participation and group work. This study has implications for teachers and researchers interested in exploring multimodality in teaching English particularly in writing and generally in other skills, listening, speaking, and reading

Polysemy is a central issue in semantic studies, referring to a single lexical item that carries multiple related meanings depending on context. In Japanese, this phenomenon is known as tagigo (多義語). The word kiken (危険), commonly translated as “danger” or “risk,” demonstrates semantic variation across different text genres. This study aims to identify the core meaning and extended meanings of kiken and to analyze the semantic relations underlying its meaning expansion in NHK Yasashii Kotoba Nyuusu. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic analysis approach. The data consist of sentences containing kiken extracted from 12 news articles published between August 2024 and July 2025. A total of 27 instances were identified and classified based on their semantic categories. The findings reveal that 8 data represent the core meaning, referring to direct physical danger to body and life. Meanwhile, 19 data demonstrate extended meanings, including social and ecological risks as well as the potential occurrence of undesirable or life-threatening events. The semantic expansion is influenced by figurative relations, particularly metonymy, as well as metaphor and synecdoche. The study concludes that the meaning of kiken is highly contextual and dynamic, reflecting semantic flexibility in Japanese news discourse. These findings highlight the importance of contextual interpretation in understanding polysemous vocabulary, especially in high-context languages such as Japanese

The Pacific Exposition: Indonesia\u27s Hybrid Diplomacy Arena in State Rationality and Bureaucratic Politics in the Southwest Pacific

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of Indonesia\u27s foreign policy decision-making by implementing the Pacific Exposition as an instrument of hybrid diplomacy, namely economic and political diplomacy in the Pacific region. This phenomenon is important because, in addition to opening access to non-traditional export markets, the expo defuses the Papua issue and strengthens Indonesia\u27s nation branding. Using a qualitative approach and case study design, this study examines the 2019 and 2021 expos as units of analysis. Data were obtained from official government documents, diplomatic speeches, academic publications, international organization reports, and interviews with key actors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade. The analysis used process tracing techniques to trace the cause-and-effect relationships in the policy formulation process. The results show that the decision to hold the expo was born out of the state\u27s rational calculation to restore the post-pandemic economy as well as a political strategy to address the Papua issue, but the tug-of-war between bureaucratic interests and the role of informal networks influenced its implementation. These findings expand the application of Foreign Policy Analysis in the Indonesian context by combining the Rational Actor Model and the Bureaucratic Politics Model, and provide practical implications for strengthening bureaucratic coordination in economic diplomacy. This study recommends the institutionalization of expos as a regular agenda and further study on the role of informal politics in Indonesian diplomacy

This study aims to analyze the factors that cause the difference in mooring service time between the Statement of Fact (SoF) issued by ITL Shipping Agency and the Pranota issued by PT Pelindo Balikpapan Branch. The research method employed was a qualitative method with a case study approach, with analysis conducted using fishbone diagrams to identify the gaps that emerged. The results of the study show that the main causes of time differences are seen from six aspects: Man, Machine, Method, Measurement, Material, and Mother Nature. This condition results in differences in the recording of mooring times, which have a direct effect on the calculation of mooring service costs and differences in bill values. This study emphasizes that improvement efforts need to be focused on improving the competence of Human Resources (HR), synchronizing the time recording system, strengthening the socialization of SOPs, optimizing document verification, and standardizing the time reference using UTC+08:00. These strategic steps are considered important to minimize time mismatches in the future and ensure the smooth and accurate process of mooring services at the Port of Balikpapan
