Classification of organic and conventional olives using convolutional neural networks
This paper presents a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify between the conventionally and organically cultivated Memecik varieties of green olives. The image forming method called the rising paper chromatography is utilized in preparing the images of Memecik varieties of green olives for CNN. In the rising chromatography method, 20, 30, and 40% sample concentrations were determined as the suitable concentrations for both organic and conventional olives. The concentrations of AgNO3 and FeSO4 were determined as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1% for both conventional and organic samples. The visual differences used for differentiation of different types of Memecik green olives are usually determined according to the regional color differences, the vivid color occurrence, the width and the frequency of bowl occurrence, the thin line, and the picks at drop zone by the expert assessors. The testing results in this study verified the effectiveness of the CNN methodology in differentiating between the organically and conventionally cultivated Memecik green olives. The newly designed neural network achieved 100% accuracy. Furthermore, this high accuracy achieved by CNN might suggest that it can be effectively used in place of the expert assessors
The role of intentionality in perceiving terrorism as a more important problem than traffic accidents
We hypothesized that perceived intentionality is one of the factors explaining why terrorism is perceived to be a more important problem than traffic accidents. In Study 1, we conducted an experiment on a large Turkish sample (N = 385) and found that participants suggested allocating significantly more budget to prevent terror-related deaths, as compared to deaths caused by traffic accidents, and this difference was fully mediated by perceived intentionality. In Study 2, which was pre-registered, we hypothesized that American participants (N = 450) would similarly suggest allocating more budget to prevent deaths caused by terrorist incidents, as compared to traffic accidents, but this difference would disappear when traffic accidents are portrayed as involving a perpetrator consciously disregarding the safety of others. Our hypothesis was partially supported. We discuss the potential implications for policy-makers and social psychological research
Aisle-to-aisle design for SBS/RS under smart deadlock control policies
Recent increase in e-commerce, warehouse operations have become one of the most significant issues. Recent customer profile requests fast delivery time with flexible options in purchasing. Automated warehousing technologies are widely utilized in warehouses to provide fast solutions for those demand profiles. Shuttle-based storage and retrieval system (SBS/RS) is an automated warehousing technology assuring fast transaction process in warehouses. In this work, we study a special design for SBS/RS where automated vehicles (i.e., shuttles) are more flexible in their travel pattern so that the system would not require a dedicated shuttle in each tier resulting with decreased number of shuttles compared to a dedicated one (i.e., each zone with a single shuttle) in the system. We compare these two system designs, flexible and dedicated ones, by using an agent-based simulation modelling approach. The proposed flexible design is developed on deadlock and collision prevention algorithms evaluating real time information. The performance of the system is compared by their average flow time per transaction, maximum flow time of a transaction, throughput rate and utilization of shuttles, etc. The results show that by integrating smart collision and deadlock prevention algorithms, the proposed flexible aisle-to-aisle SBS/RS works better than the dedicated system design

To which world regions does the valence-dominance model of social perception apply?
Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution
Electrooxidation of Glycerol on Monometallic and Bimetallic Catalysts-Containing Porous Carbon Cloth Electrodes in an Alkaline Medium
The electrooxidation of glycerol was studied on monometallic (Pt/C, Co/C, Ni/C, Cu/C) and bimetallic catalysts (PtCo/C, PtNi/C, PtCu/C) - containing porous carbon cloth electrodes in an alkaline medium to gain insight about the potentials of electrodes for simultaneous hydrogen and chemical production. Physical and chemical properties of catalysts were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy while electrochemical characteristics of electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, choronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Bimetallic catalysts-containing electrodes showed higher glycerol electrooxidation activities and stabilities compared to monometallic catalysts-containing electrodes. The highest activity was observed on the PtCu/C-containing electrode due to its higher electrochemical active surface area and low kinetic and mass transfer resistance. It was also found that the presence of porous carbon cloth had a considerable effect on the glycerol electrooxidation activity
Determining the Level of Institutionalization in Family-Owned Shipping Businesses
The levels of institutionalization have varied in organizations affecting their success and sustainability in business. The objective of this study is to develop a model for determining the level of institutionalization in which family-owned organizations operate the Level of Institutionalization for Organizations (LIFO) by a collaborative social research. This research contributes to the institutional theory by developing a model for an innovative approach to harmonize family and business at the institutional level with 68 variables derived from institutional theory. It also contributes to family businesses in maritime transportation as the LIFO model was used to determine the institutionalization level of shipowners in general as family-owned businesses. The model is based on the variables in both new and old institutional theory. A semi-constructed questionnaire was conducted among 64 out of a total of 244 of shipping companies registered within the country that operate globally. The data is collected through face to face interviews carried out with the heads of family-owned businesses. The data is used for qualitative content analysis. The results reveal the establishments of these organizations were set on firm bases in the pre-institutionalization level; there were fluctuations in doing business and differing attitutes among organizations in the same field in the semi-institutionalization level; there are bigger issues in the sustainability and insitutionalisation of family in the level of full-institutionalization
