Multiparameter-based product, energy and exergy optimizations for biomass gasification

    No full text
The thermodynamic modelling of biomass gasification was studied by using Gibbs free energy minimization approach. Different from the studies using the same approach, the simultaneous presence of all gasifying agents (air, H2O and CO2) was considered and a multiparameter optimization was applied to determine the synergetic effect of gasifying agents for hydrogen, syngas with a specific H2/CO ratio and methane production. The performance of gasification was assessed by using technical and environmental performance indicators such as product yields, cold gas efficiency, exergy efficiency, CO2 emission and the heat requirement of the gasifier. The results show that the simultaneous presence of gasifying agents does not create considerable changes in syngas yield, H2 yield, methane yield, CGE and exergy efficiency while it allows to tune the H2/CO ratio and the heat requirement of the gasifier. The highest syngas yield is observed at T > 1100 K and 1 bar and when SBR > 0.5 and/or CBR > 0.8 with the absence of air, at which CGE changes between 114% and 122% while exergy efficiency is between 77% and 86%. The results prove that CO2 offers several advantages as a gasifying agent and suggests that CO2 recycling from gasifier outlet is a useful option for the biomass gasification

A tale of two hashtags: An examination of moral content of pro- and anti-government tweets in Turkey

During the campaign period of the 2018 Presidential Election in Turkey, there was a burst in the number of tweets posted by both pro- and anti-government Twitter users. Both sides started their own hashtags and reached a total of 2 million tweets in only one day. We analyzed the content of 186,554 tweets from two opposing ideological camps to test the predictions of Moral Foundations Theory, which suggests that liberals and conservatives endorse different moral foundations. We scored each side's level of emphasis on different moral foundations using the Turkish Moral Foundations Dictionary and compared the two groups. Results revealed that the supporters of the conservative government in Turkey were more likely to endorse care, loyalty, and authority foundations of morality, as compared to those who oppose the conservative government. In addition, the general moral emphasis was higher in the tweets of the pro-government group. Being one of the first studies investigating the moral content of political tweets in a non-WEIRD context, the current study yields important findings regarding the external validity of the Moral Foundations Theory's predictions in different cultures

Framing the Syrian Operations: Populism in Foreign Policy and the Polarized News Media of Turkey

    No full text
How do news media outlets react to an international crisis during a resurgence of populism at home? Led by President Erdogan's AK Party, Turkey's military operations toward Syria provide fertile ground to examine how an increasingly polarized media industry has used populist framing to report on the conflict. Adopting a framing analysis method, this article analyses 2,166 examples of news coverage of the conflict by 3 mainstream national online news outlets with printed versions affiliated with certain political parties or sociopolitical camps-namely, the pro-government Sabah, the moderate/the pro-government Hurriyet, and the opposition/ Kemalist Sozcu-as well as one alternative media outlet, Bianet. The findings reveal that the creation of a sense of crisis over Syria has precipitated a "rally-round-the-flag" effect. This prompted the ruling AK Party's populist discourses to dominate the public sphere through the mainstream media, including opposition outlets, with detrimental implications for the state of democracy. It will likely serve as a baseline to make cross-country comparisons on the interplay among the media landscape, international crises, and authoritarian governments at a time of resurgent populism

Türkiye’De Yüzyıl Ortası Modern Mobilyanın Materyalliği

The modern interior emerged as a complex phenomenon, an interchange of modernity and its materiality. One of the constituent elements of this complexity is the progressive relationship with technology. This paper explores the materiality of furniTurkishBu makale mobilyaların önemini, malzeme nitelikleri, üretim teknolojileri, zanaat bileşenleri ve zorlukları açısından araştırmaktadır. Makalede, mobilya tasarımı tarihinde, özellikle de materyal odaklı içerik açısından eşsiz bir örnek olarak, Türkiye’n

An End-to-End Trainable Feature Selection-Forecasting Architecture Targeted at the Internet of Things

We develop a novel end-to-end trainable feature selection-forecasting (FSF) architecture for predictive networks targeted at the Internet of Things (IoT). In contrast with the existing filter-based, wrapper-based and embedded feature selection methods, our architecture enables the automatic selection of features dynamically based on feature importance score calculation and gamma-gated feature selection units that are trained jointly and end-to-end with the forecaster. We compare the performance of our FSF architecture on the problem of forecasting IoT device traffic against the following existing (feature selection, forecasting) technique pairs: Autocorrelation Function (ACF), Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Recurrent Feature Elimination (RFE) and Ridge Regression methods for feature selection, and Linear Regression, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), 1 Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D CNN), Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), and Logistic Regression for forecasting. We show that our FSF architecture achieves either the best or close to the best performance among all of the competing techniques by virtue of its dynamic, automatic feature selection capability. In addition, we demonstrate that both the training time and the execution time of FSF are reasonable for IoT applications. This work represents a milestone for the development of predictive networks for IoT in smart cities of the near future
