Exploring 3D printing techniques for the hybrid fabrication of discrete topology optimized structures
The application of topology optimization methods in architecture, while useful for conceptual design explorations, seems to be limited by the practical realization of continuum-type design outcomes. One way to overcome this limitation is setting up design and fabrication techniques, through which continuum domains become discrete structures. This study investigates to which extent discrete optimized systems can be built using a hybrid approach combining 3D printing and analogue fabrication techniques. The procedure is based on an algorithm in Grasshopper (Rhinoceros) that translates continuum topologies obtained in MATLAB into discrete systems, providing alternatives depending on the targeted volume fraction, the intended surface smoothness of the structural components and building material. The study focuses on fabrication aspects and structural performance of discrete structures using 3D printed nodes. Experimental tests evaluate the compressive strength of different types of filaments with varied infill percentages. Final prototypes are fabricated using a hybrid technique involving the use of 3D printed nodes to assemble bar-arrays comprising wooden members. Results provide a critical appraisal of the limitations and potentialities of 3D printing for hybrid fabrication of real scale structures

Risk management tools in the road transportation industry with mediation and moderation analysis
Background: This study aims to shed light on risk-mitigating tools and strategies that can be used in third-party logistics (3PL) companies to increase performance. Risk and risk management tools are identified and classified according to the managers’ feedback and the theoretical background. The most important risks for the road transportation industry are analyzed, their implications are discussed, and mitigating strategies are offered. Methodology: The study used purposive sampling from international road freight forwarders that were members of the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers (UTIKAD) or International Transporters' Association (UND). The data were collected by questionnaire method and analyzed with SPSS 22 and AMOS programs. Results: The results show that the road transportation industry has important risks that managers have not effectively managed. According to the results, the main problems in 3PL companies are lack of coordination, lack of visibility, and poor service quality. The results support that delivery risk directly affects transportation quality and process risks. Originality In this study, transportation-related risks are analyzed, showing their impact on a company’s overall processes. Additionally, we examine whether the transportation quality creates a mediation effect or information sharing has a moderation effect on a company’s process risks. Few studies exist on transportation risks and the role of mitigating strategies in reducing these risks, and this is also a limitation of our research from the risk perspective

Blockchain technology for enhancing traceability and efficiency in automobile supply chain-a case study
A robust traceability system would help organizations in inventory optimization reduce lead time and improve customer service and quality which further enables the organizations to be a leader in their industry sector. This research study analyzes the challenges faced by the automotive industry in its supply chain operations. Further, the traceability issues and waiting time at different nodes of the supply chain are considered to be priority issues that affect the overall supply chain efficiency in the automotive supply chain. After studying the existing blockchain architectures and their implementation methodology, this study proposes a new blockchain-based architecture to improve traceability and reduce waiting time for the automotive supply chain. A hyper ledger fabric-based blockchain architecture is developed to track the ownership transfers in inbound and out-bound logistics. The simulation results of the proposed hyper ledger fabric-based blockchain architecture show that there is an improvement in the traceability of items at different nodes of the supply chain that enhances the Inventory Quality Ratio (IQR) and the mean waiting time is reduced at the factory, wholesaler, and retailer, which thereby improves the overall supply chain efficiency. The blockchain embedded supply chain is more capable to eliminate the risks and uncertainties associated with the automotive supply chain. The benefits of adopting blockchain technology in the automotive supply chain are also described. The developed blockchain-based framework is capable to get more visibility into goods movement and inventory status in automotive supply chains
