Turkish Press Within Framework of the Spiral of Silence Theory: News on Denaturalization of Cem Karaca and His Return

    Get PDF
It is known that Cem Karaca, one of the most important representatives of Anadolu Rock music, stands out with his leftist political stance as well as with his music. The trial process was initiated against him alleging that he made communist propaganda. He was recalled after the 1980 coup when he was abroad and he was denaturalized in 1983 because of his rejection. After the coup, he could return to Turkey in 1987 due to the political atmosphere of ANAL. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Spiral of Silence Theory on the Turkish press through the news about Karaca's denaturalization and return to Turkey. In this context, the news in Cumhuriyet newspaper was analyzed with the critical discourse analysis method. The findings show that although different attitudes are reflected in the news of Cumhuriyet regarding the denaturalization of Karaca as well as his return to Turkey, both are limited to official discourse. The fact that even the news in a newspaper claiming to be oppositional is compatible with the dominant opinion, both during the coup administration and during the ANAP period, clearly reveals the existence of the Spiral of Silence Theory

Finansal performans, şirketlerin hem finansal hem de finansal olmayan politikalarının sonuçlarını yansıtarak kaynakların etkin kullanımını ve riskliliklerini değerlendirir. Bu nedenle, rekabetçi iş dünyasında finansal performans değerlendirmesi çok önemFinancial performance evaluation is crucial for competitive business world. Steel and iron industry is both high-tech heavy machine and labor-intensive industry, which makes it operating in a highly competitive environment. Therefore, the aim of this s

From Conventional Methods to Contemporary Neural Network Approaches: Financial Fraud Detection

    Get PDF
This chapter provides insights on the underlying reasons to replace the conventional methods with contemporary approaches—the neural network-based machine learning methods—in financial fraud detection. To do this, we perform a systematic literature review on the evolution of financial fraud detection literature over the years from traditional techniques toward more advanced approaches such as modern machine learning methods like artificial neural networks. Additionally, this chapter provides concise chronological progress of the fraud literature and country-specific fraud-related regulations to draw a better framework and give the idea behind the corpus. Using the metadata in the existing literature, we show both benefits and costs of using machine learning-based methods in financial fraud detection. An accurate prediction using contemporary approaches is essential to minimize the potential costs of fraudulent financial activities for stakeholders, reduce the adverse effects of fraudsters’ and companies’ fraudulent activities, and increase trust in capital markets via continuous fraud risk assessment of companies

An application of a circular economy approach to design an energy-efficient heat recovery system

    Get PDF
This paper aims to develop an optimal real-life energy-efficient design for a production plant within the concept of the circular economy. The problem is to install a Heat Recovery System (HRS) that utilizes the hot oil used by the compressors to heat the water for the central heating system. To achieve the desired level of energy efficiency this design problem must be formulated from both the optimization and sustainability points of view. Additionally, this design problem must also consider the investment cost. In line with this purpose, this paper formulates this design problem as an optimization problem employing a mathematical programming approach as a single objective, and as a multi-objective optimization problem through a goal programming approach. Besides, this paper uses the return on investment as a key performance indicator, since it deals with a real-life design problem with an investment cost. The related design problem is solved with the single objective and multi-objective versions of the developed mathematical programming model via a commercial solver to identify different design alternatives and hence giving the decision-maker to make a selection option. Finally, the capability of the developed mathematical programming model is tested on a set of randomly generated problems. The obtained results indicate that the developed mathematical programming model is a successful decision support system since its single and multi-objective versions are capable of identifying energy-efficient production designs within the context of the real-life problem on hand and the circular economy
