The hacienda San Telmo of Queyilque, located in the dioceses of Concepcion, Chile, was a typical 18th century colonial hacienda. However, the unexpected death of its owner and the prolonged court case the ensued over the distribution of his belongings culminated with the inclusion, as evidence of his intent, four books with the accounting of the hacienda. These books permit us to see and analyze colonial haciendas from the owner’s perspective and the economic relations between the owner and his workers. Here we will analyze with the accounting books the labor system within the rural hacienda.

The celebration of the IV centenary of Bogotá’s foundation was accompanied by several social acts displaying a myriad of different self-representations of the Colombia’s national character. A prominent event was the Archaeological and Ethnographical Exposition, in which both objects and indigenous people themselves were exhibited. Both journalists and “amateur” etnologists or archaelogists forged a representation on what the indio meant for the past and the present of the nation. This image was constituted of two overlapping images: the image of the indio-mestizo and the image of the indio-origen. This article suggests that 1938 was a breaking point in the story of this double-image: both origins and future; the best and the worst of the “national soul” was to be found in the representations evident in press of the not-quite-citizensyet indigenous people of Colombia. This article proposes a consideration to the history of an anthropological or etnological knowledge in Colombia through the analysis of this double-imageLa Exposición arqueológica y etnográfica de 1938 corrió paralela a una de las celebraciones conmemorativas más importantes de Colombia: el IV Centenario de la fundación de Bogotá.

The morphology of early paleoamericans of the New World is characterized by a long, narrow and height cranial vault, and a big size of teeth, whereas the amerinds (more recent indians) exhibit a shorter and wider cranial vault and more little teeth. Two hypotheses have been proposed: (a) As the result of two different migrations, in the final Pleistocene from Southeast of Asia by population remarkable similar to modern Australo-Melanesian, and by a later Holocene migration from Northeast Asia with mongoloid morphological pattern; (b) by the result of local genetic diversification. We evaluated these hypotheses by the multivariate analysis of craniometrical, odontometrical and morphological traits from skull andteeth of 19 pre-Columbian groups of Colombia.

    Get PDF
Increasingly, archaeologists are building museums, promoting tourism activities and underwriting other projects to improve the economic conditions and life-chances of the people who live in the communities in which they work. Frequently, archaeologists perceive an ethical obligation and even a practical necessity to identify ways for local communities to benefit economically from the heritage resources at their doorsteps. Sustaining these projects for many years has proven difficult, however. This paper explores the challenges for archaeologists contemplating community economic development projects by focusing on one notably successful community venture associated with the Inca temple site in Raqchi, Peru.

    Get PDF
In this paper the main results of the first archaeological dig in Colombia of a pre-Hispanic goldsmith workshop are presented succinctly; this workshop worked over 800 years in the lower basin of the Saldaña river (Magdalena Valley). Human groups settled there during the late period (9th-17th c. AD) had technical  expertise (hammered-annealing, lost wax casting and emptying), tools (refractory ceramic and lithic industry) and forest resources and minerals needed to produce parts in copper and gold high quality, complexity and size (heartlike pectorals, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures with tips on bracket).
