Gender in the Integration of Batik Ethnomathematics and Fiqh: Learning Models, Numeracy, and Trustworthiness
Mathematics education in Indonesia continues to face challenges in developing students’ numeracy literacy, partly due to the limited integration of cultural, Islamic, and gender perspectives in pedagogical practices. This study seeks to design and validate an integrative learning model that merges batik ethnomathematics, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) values, and gender inclusivity to enhance students’ numeracy literacy and trustworthiness (amanah). A quasi-experimental method employing a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design was applied. The experimental class received instruction based on batik ethnomathematics integrated with fiqh values, while the control class followed a conventional approach. The findings demonstrate that embedding geometric concepts within batik ethnomathematics made learning more contextual, meaningful, and culturally relevant. The inclusion of fiqh principles, such as amanah and fairness, fostered students’ Islamic character development, while gender-responsive strategies promoted equitable participation among male and female learners. This study extends existing ethnomathematics scholarship by proposing a cohesive instructional framework that bridges cultural, ethical, and pedagogical dimensions. Theoretically, it enriches the discourse on numeracy literacy through the synthesis of ethnomathematics and Islamic moral education. Practically, it offers a model for implementing gender-responsive and value-based mathematics learning that cultivates trustworthiness and inclusivity in diverse educational contexts
Empowering Women in Islamic Rituals: A Participatory Approach to Barzanji Recitations in Bugis Pesantren
Barzanji recitations in Bugis pesantrens in Makassar have traditionally relegated women to passive roles, reflecting entrenched gender norms. This study aims to empower women to participate actively in Barzanji rituals at the Multidimensional Alfakhriyah Islamic Boarding School by implementing a gender‑sensitive Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework. Data collection included in‑depth interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations. The intervention comprised Barzanji sessions co‑designed with female santri and community leaders, featuring flexible timing and culturally adapted formats. Findings reveal that women’s participation increased from 12 % to 68 %, accompanied by enhanced spiritual understanding and a strengthened sense of ownership over the ritual. Participatory monitoring further reinforced women’s agency within religious spaces. These results demonstrate that gender‑responsive programs can effectively shift traditional norms and position women as active agents of change within Islamic ritual practice. This study contributes to gender and Islamic scholarship by presenting a scalable model suitable for other pesantrens. Future applications may include broader implementation across Sulawesi and longitudinal research to assess cultural transformation
Imam al-Shafi‘i’s Fiqh on Women as Rukyatul Hilal Witnesses: A Hermeneutic and Maslahah Perspective
The exclusion of women from witnessing rukyat al-hilal remains a critical issue in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence, raising questions about gender inclusivity and the contextual interpretation of classical fiqh. This research reexamines Imam al-Shafi‘i’s fiqh concerning the prohibition of women serving as witnesses in rukyat al-hilal. The prohibition originally arose within a classical social context where women had limited access to astronomy. However, in the modern era, many women have acquired advanced expertise in astronomy and actively participate in determining the beginning of the lunar month. Therefore, this prohibition has lost its relevance and may contribute to the subordination of women in religious decision-making. Using a hermeneutic approach and Najmuddin al-Tufi’s theory of maṣlaḥah mursalah, the study finds that Imam al-Shafi‘i formulated his legal opinions by considering the social conditions of his time, as reflected in his qaul qadim and qaul jadid. Theoretically, this study highlights that fiqh is dynamic and responsive to changing contexts. Practically, it suggests that accepting the testimony of competent women in rukyat al-hilal aligns with the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in developing a more inclusive and adaptive Islamic legal system. The exclusion of women from witnessing rukyat al-hilal remains a critical issue in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence, raising questions about gender inclusivity and the contextual interpretation of classical fiqh. Modern Masculinity in Popular Culture: Symbols and Interactions of Male Fashion Users in Mataram
Popular culture disseminated through social media has driven a transformation in masculine values within urban communities, particularly among men who use fashion and skincare products. This study aims to examine the shift in masculinity values from traditional to modern and to analyze the social interaction processes among male fashion users in Mataram. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected via in-depth interviews with twelve male informants actively engaged with fashion and skincare. Analysis was conducted using phenomenological reduction techniques, along with source and time triangulation. The findings indicate that traditional masculinity centered on physical strength and dominance has shifted toward a more flexible, reflective, and self-care–oriented modern masculinity. Social interactions occur directly through peer groups and indirectly via social media, which serves as a platform for exchanging new masculine symbols and identities. These findings highlight the importance of reconstructing understandings of masculinity within the context of popular culture and digital technology, offering theoretical contributions to gender, media, and cultural sociology studies
Women’s Authority in the Perspective of Hadith: A Thematic and Contextual Analysis
The study of women’s authority from the perspective of ḥadīth is a timely issue in contemporary discourse, particularly regarding women’s roles in leadership and decision-making across various spheres. This research aims to explore the understanding of ḥadīths related to women’s authority, both in normative and historical contexts. The findings indicate that comprehension of ḥadīths concerning women’s authority requires a contextual approach that accounts for the social, cultural, and historical backgrounds in which these traditions emerged. Furthermore, this study emphasises the importance of distinguishing between universally normative ḥadīths and those that are locally contextual. In many cases, women’s authority is not inherently constrained by religious normative texts, but is instead shaped by scholarly interpretations influenced by patriarchal contexts. This article recommends a re-reading of ḥadīths using a critical hermeneutic approach to uncover more inclusive dimensions of gender justice. By doing so, the understanding of women’s authority in Islam can contribute to establishing a more equitable and just social order, without compromising the core values taught in the religion.
Gender Equality in the Qur’an: A Thematic and Critical Interpretation of Women-Related Verses
Gender inequality in some Muslim societies is often legitimized by narrow interpretations of religious texts. This study investigates the concept of gender equality in the Qur’an through a thematic-critical analysis of verses concerning women. Employing a qualitative library research method, it integrates tafsīr maudhu‘ī (thematic exegesis) with critical hermeneutics. Primary sources include the Qur’an and authentic hadiths, while secondary sources consist of classical and contemporary tafsir literature, along with feminist interpretations by scholars such as Amina Wadud and Asma Barlas. The findings indicate that the Qur’an affirms gender equality in terms of spiritual dignity, moral responsibility, and human potential. However, the historical development of tafsir has often been shaped by patriarchal contexts, leading to gender-biased interpretations. This study outlines a progression from literalist to more contextual hermeneutical approaches, highlighting the Qur’an’s interpretive flexibility in addressing evolving social realities. The study concludes that recovering the Qur’an’s original message of justice and equality necessitates a contextual and inclusive interpretive framework. By reaffirming the equal status of men and women as moral agents and servants of God, it contributes to contemporary discussions on gender justice in Islam
Feminisme Pasca-Kolonial: Menafsirkan Ulang Teks Keagamaan untuk Keadilan Gender Global
In the era of globalization, gender inequality continues to persist within religious traditions, often reinforced by patriarchal interpretations shaped by colonial legacies that hinder women’s rights and broader efforts toward global justice. This paper explores how postcolonial feminism can reinterpret religious texts to challenge these norms and promote equitable gender relations. Using a qualitative interpretive design within a descriptive-comparative framework, the study analyzes key texts from the Qur’an, the Bible, and the Vedas through contextual exegesis, etymological analysis, and dialogical engagement with participants from South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East. The findings reveal that traditional patriarchal readings stem from socio-historical contexts rather than inherent textual mandates, with colonial influences intensifying hierarchical structures. Postcolonial feminist reinterpretations uncover egalitarian potentials, including shared responsibility in Qur’anic verses, ontological equality in Biblical creation narratives, and gender balance in Vedic symbolism. The study extends postcolonial feminist theory by integrating decolonial hermeneutics into scriptural analysis, offering a framework for reimagining gender agency within sacred texts. Practical strategies, such as workshops that empower marginalized voices, demonstrate a shift toward inclusive discourse, providing pathways for policy reform and community transformation in pursuit of gender justice
Islamic Self‑Respect as a Coping Strategy for Victims of Sexual Harassment
Victims of sexual abuse in Muslim communities often face limited access to psychosocial support due to stigma, shame, and the lack of culturally and religiously relevant interventions. This study addresses these challenges by examining how Islamic values, izzah (dignity), sabr (patience), and tawakkul (trust in God) can support the development of self-esteem as a coping strategy for victims. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer software, this study explores how these core Islamic concepts contribute to psychological resilience. The findings reveal that self-esteem rooted in Islamic spirituality plays a critical role in helping victims cope with trauma and rebuild their psychological well-being. Islamic values offer not only personal spiritual strength but also a culturally appropriate framework for recovery, especially in communities where modern mental health services are underutilized. An approach based on sabr, tawakkul, and izzah can strengthen resilience and restore self-worth affected by abuse. This study provides valuable insights for scholars, mental health practitioners, and policymakers, emphasizing the need for interventions and policies grounded in Islamic teachings to support survivors in Muslim communities.Victims of sexual abuse in Muslim communities often face limited access to psychosocial support due to stigma, shame, and the lack of culturally and religiously relevant interventions. Gender Equality in Islamic Education: Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Media Strategies
Gender inequality continues to shape Islamic education in Indonesia, particularly through curriculum, pedagogy, and institutional practices that reproduce patriarchal norms. This study aims to examine the conceptual foundations, challenges, and strategic frameworks for integrating gender-responsive values into the Islamic Education Curriculum and to identify their theoretical and practical implications. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research draws on an extensive literature review of classical and contemporary Islamic scholarship, peer-reviewed studies, and national education policies. Thematic analysis highlights key obstacles, including limited educator competence, gender-biased learning materials, and insufficient institutional support, while identifying strategies such as curriculum redesign, gender-sensitive pedagogy, and the effective use of digital and traditional media to challenge stereotypes. The findings reveal that integrating gender values requires not only curricular reform but also a broader epistemological transformation within Islamic education. This study proposes a multidimensional framework for gender-responsive curriculum development. It offers evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, educators, and curriculum developers to promote gender equity across Islamic educational settings
Analisis Budaya Patriarki Terhadap Partisipasi Pendidikan Perempuan di Desa Rembitan
Patriarchal culture remains a significant issue in Indonesia, influencing various aspects of social life, including education. The patriarchal value system that positions men as dominant decision-makers has created gender disparities that restrict women’s access to education. This study aims to identify, understand, and analyze the influence of patriarchal culture on women’s educational participation in Rembitan Village, Central Lombok Regency. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten informants and nine female participants who had dropped out of school or had not pursued higher education. The data were analyzed using qualitative techniques and validated through source, method, and time triangulation. The findings reveal that patriarchal values remain deeply rooted in Rembitan society and manifest in two primary forms: (1) cultural patriarchy, which prioritizes boys’ education and reinforces male dominance in decision-making, and (2) domestic patriarchy, characterized by gender-based divisions of labor and male control over household decisions. These conditions limit girls’ motivation and opportunities to pursue education. The study recommends strengthening gender awareness through family and community education, enhancing the role of institutions in promoting equality, and developing local policies that support women’s access to education, particularly in rural areas.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui, mengidentifikasi, dan menganalisis budaya patriarki terhadap partisipasi pendidikan perempuan di Desa Rembitan, Kabupaten Lombok Tengah.
