In recent years, internships have become essential for
college students looking to gain experience before entering
the workforce. Despite this, the competitive nature of
searching for internships can be discouraging and time-
consuming.
Seattle is considered a top city for industries like tech and
business primarily due to large companies like Amazon and
Microsoft being based in the area. These industries often
have more jobs and internships available than others,
providing more opportunities for students in related
majors. Other fields, especially those in the humanities,
provide far fewer chances and higher levels of competition.
A quick search for “business internships in Seattle” on
LinkedIn, a popular search engine for internships and
career networking, provides over 4,000 results. Similar searches for “communications internships,” “humanities internships” and
“psychology internships” provide fewer than 100.
Via Tay, a first-year accounting major, shared their own experiences career building while at Seattle U.
“Being a business major has definitely made it easier,” Tay said. “Albers has so many resources as well as professors that have
connections to internships. Additionally, almost all business-related internships are paid, so there’s less worry.”
Despite these perks, competition is still rampant within the industry. 
“I applied to around 40 or 50 internships this year and only heard back from less than 10 of them,” Tay said.
This experience is far from uncommon. Students have experienced long wait times to hear back from employers, a lack of responses
and predatory companies. Third-year Psychology Major Anai Quintanilla shared their experience looking for internships. 
“As a whole, finding work in the psychology field isn’t too difficult, but I do feel that there is an overabundance of less than desirable
internships where they are obviously only looking for free or cheap labor and nothing beyond that,” Quintanilla said.

In recent years, many companies have increased their hiring requirements to keep up with the increasingly competitive job market,
making internships practically a requirement for many fields. This pressure can be a major source of stress for students already
worried about their future opportunities.
“For psychology at least, I feel like [internships are] basically required, especially when you’re an undergrad. You mainly need them
to get to know people in your field and attempt to gain some hands-on experience,” Quintanilla said. “There’s a lot of pressure from
counselors, parents, and professors to find one. It’s definitely a constant stressor going on in the back of my mind.”
Students are eager to get positions and face relentless pressure to join the market.
“The job market is so competitive that any way to stand out or get connections could be the difference between a job and
unemployment,” Tay added. “It’s definitely a lot of pressure since Seattle is a major city where people with way more experience
than me are struggling to find employment.”
While the internship process may be stressful, Seattle University provides several resources to assist students. One such group is
Seattle U’s branch of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). The organization seeks to support students going
into public relations, marketing and more by hosting tours of PR firms in the area and providing help with resumes and job
applications.
As a fourth-year communication and media major, PRSSA Co-president Angelina Riley has seen and experienced firsthand the
difficulties students face when seeking internships.
“It’s looking a lot like the job market,” Riley said. “From what I’ve experienced and witnessed, students are applying to 20 or 30
internships and they’re maybe hearing back from one or two. I secured my first internship just this year with the City of Seattle, and
it did take me like a couple of months to hear anything. I think I applied back in September and didn’t hear back or anything until late
November.”
According to Riley, part of this difficulty can come from the tendency students have to only apply to the largest, most well-known
internships they can find. These large companies may offer better pay or more job security, but they also have the most competition.
Reaching out to smaller organizations may improve the chances of receiving a response. This, however, can come with its own risks.
“I see, at least for communications majors or marketing, you’ll often see something that says it’s communications or social media,
when it’s really just door-knocking and selling knives or something,” Riley said. “You just have to make sure you look at the website
and really understand what that organization or company is. That’s why people gravitate towards those larger companies, it’s easier
to get information on them.”
Riley recommends resources such as Greenhouse and Glassdoor, which allow users to read reviews of various workplaces. LinkedIn
also allows users to see if Seattle U alumni work at a given company, potentially providing a resource for connections and honest
opinions on jobs and internships.
PRSSA provides help to all students, not only those who plan on going into PR. They also frequently work with the Career
Engagement Office, which provides support and assistance to students looking to start their internship process. One of the best
ways to stay updated on internship opportunities is to connect with professors.
The job and internship market is constantly changing, due to the current economy and market. However, utilizing the resources
available to students such as connections with clubs and professors can help ease this intimidating process.

The Crash by Rhyan Mack 
The flashing lights of the ambulance were no longer blinding. The crunching of gravel 
under boots had faded into background noise. The chatter over walkies sounded like Charlie 
Brown's parents were urgently trying to tell me something. My eyes focused and unfocused but 
didn't immediately cooperate when a figure stood before me, blocking the ambulance's lights. As 
I attempted to refocus, the red and blue glow created a brilliant aura around a woman I did not 
know well enough to trust. 
"Is this your car?" 
The voice wasn't unfamiliar, but the clarity of the words made it feel brand new. I nodded, my 
eyes following her gaze to the totaled mess scattering the highway and merging with the other 
vehicle. 
"Yeah, it was." 
I turned my head to inspect the damage I hadn't taken in yet. Debris had littered the side of the 
road, tumbled into the embankment, and buried itself both in my skin and that of the shrouded 
form being loaded onto a stretcher. The impact hadn't felt that destructive despite the 
mechanical and organic carnage I knew had been inflicted. The pain in my neck showed just 
how much it had done to me, though I'd refused the cervical collar. The ache wasn't unbearable. 
It made me feel more alive than I had the moment before the collision. 
"You wanna tell me what happened tonight?" 
"I hit him." 
I dragged my eyes up to the figure as I made my declaration. Of course, I'd hit him. My car was 
heavily damaged, but his was decimated. The driver's side door had folded in upon itself. The 
entire car looked like it had been used to demonstrate an elaborate piece of origami, then been 
discarded due to a misplaced fold. More glass littered the road than still fitted into any of the 
windows. It seemed like an endless reflective sea, with water stung and drew blood and sharks. 
Sharks that were loaded up into stretchers under white sheets who were hunted for sport after 
they took chunks out of surfers or divers. 
"Y'know, as jarring as it is, accidents like this happen all the time. Sometimes they're 
tragic, and someone doesn't make it." 
Tragic. That wasn't the word I'd use to describe it. I felt like I was staring through her, focusing 
on the light shining over her thin shoulders and behind her tied-back hair. Her heavy jacket, or 
at least one like it, had been offered to me what felt like a dozen times. Despite how cold I had 
been and still was, I'd shaken my head. My gaze tracked back to the ruined bits of the car. It 
couldn't even be sold for parts, not like the parts he stole from me again and again and again. No 
one bit was entirely salvageable, nothing for greedy chop shops or vultures to pick over. Not 
even empty bones or an annihilated chassis. For once, he got to experience what it felt like to be 
nothing. 
"Do you know how fast you were driving tonight? Any drugs or alcohol in your 
system?" 
"Not fast enough."

He told me it was like looking in a mirror. Sometimes we come out wrong, he said. The 
differences aren't substantial, or else we wouldn't be useful. Same organs, build, blood. But the 
arrangement of our faces, the slant of our cheekbones; slight technological distortions. But he 
said I was perfect. An exact copy. Uncanny. 
I know what 111 be used for. I wait in my room until then. He calls it my room. It's small. 
Cold. All of us, one after the other, lining the walls, watching and waiting. I don't know why he 
arranged us like this. I don't have his memories. But we line the walls, and we watch. 
He comes for us one by one. I think there are certain things he can't do unless we're 
perfect. But other procedures are easier. He smiles when he unlocks the doors to our rooms. At 
least, I think it s the same for the others. I don't have a view of most of us, usually, but there are 
so many of us that I can see those positioned across from me; they're a long distance away. The 
place where he keeps us is large. But if I crane my head to the right as much as the wires will let 
me and squint right underneath the operating lamp, I can see him at eye level. I'm lucky. My 
room lets me look at all the screens. I can't read them - they're too far away - but I can see the 
heartbeat monitors and the anesthesia cart and a direct shot of the table. He put me right in the 
center. 
We don't get put on the table right away. He has to measure us first, to confirm our 
similarities. Height, weight, BMI, blood type, blood pressure. MRI scan, CAT scan, bone scan. It 
takes a while. Not as long as it used to, he says. He's got the process down pat now. We come 
out standard. Less hiccups, less challenges, more progress. It's easier this way. For him and for 
us. Who likes being measured? 
The last time I got taken out, I got to sit in a bigger room, with beanbag chairs and 
posters on the walls. Everything was so clean. Really kind of him, to provide that for us. There 
were two more of me. We were waiting to be measured. We don't often get to talk with each 
other, the others and me. I didn't really know what to say. I asked what they were going to be 
used for, if they knew already. I didn't at the time. 
One said that he had a slight defect in his jawbone so he couldn't be used as a control for 
anything important. He knew that his procedure would involve his liver, but he didn't know 
exactly what would be done to it, or how long it would take. The other me was quiet. I don't 
think they wanted to talk about it. So instead I said that the posters on the walls were funny, and 
they agreed with me, and we talked about that for a bit instead. I think being agreeable is 
normal for us. We're very nice. 
Eventually he came in. He, capital H, the first of all of us. He put his hand on my 
shoulder and I knew it was my turn to go back into the large room, where all of us sleep and 
spend most of our time. I remember thinking that I must have a very charming smile, because 
his smile was charming, and looking at him is like looking in a mirror. He talked to me the 
whole time he was taking my vitals. That was a while ago. He laughed at me when we finished, 
said we were like two peas in a pod. I'm just like you. I told him that was silly, because there are 
a lot more than two of us, but he wasn't paying attention to me at that point.

CASE STUDY 1 
A Case Study of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy

Abstract  
This case study describes a 78-year-old woman who presents to the emergency 
department with chest pain, vomiting, and dizziness. Often mimicking myocardial infarction, 
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is triggered by emotional stress or physical stressors which 
predominantly affects post-menopausal women. Various studies were conducted to differentiate 
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy from myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease, this includes 
troponin levels, electrocardiogram, and coronary angiography. This case emphasizes the role of 
echocardiography in diagnosis and its importance in predicting clinical outcomes and ruling out 
possible complications in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography revealed apical 
ballooning with hyperkinetic basal and mid-segments of the left ventricle with a mildly reduced 
ejection fraction of 45-50% as interpreted by the Simpson's Biplane method. The patient was 
consulted for guided medical therapy for the management of the cardiomyopathy. Increased

awareness and thorough echocardiographic assessment are essential for improving diagnosis and 
healthcare outcomes.

Introduction 
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy presents with 
regional wall motion abnormalities and 
symptoms similar to a patient with a 
myocardial infarction or acute coronary 
artery disease (CAD), misdiagnosis can 
occur due to similar presentation.1 In most 
cases, left ventricular systolic dysfunction 
can be reversed. This cardiomyopathy 
predominantly affects postmenopausal 
women which makes up 80-90% of cases 
and is triggered by emotional or physical 
stress.1,2 
Diagnosing this cardiomyopathy will 
require multiple labs to rule out an acute 
myocardial infarction (AMI) and CAD. 
Furthermore, this can be a recurrent 
cardiomyopathy which makes up one to ten 
percent of cases2 and it is important we 
evaluate the patients progression closely to 
prevent additional heart damage. Careful 
echocardiography evaluation of patients 
with takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC)  is 
crucial to ensure favorable prognosis. 
Case Report 
A 78 year old woman presented into 
the emergency room with intense chest pain, 
dizziness, and vomiting. The patient has a 
history of similar symptoms which occurred 
in July 2023 at a different hospital. Due to 
the patient's history of uncontrolled 
hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus 
type 2 (DM2) they performed an emergency 
coronary angiogram to rule out coronary 
artery disease in July 2023, there were no 
abnormal findings. Coronary artery disease

is not expected to progress significantly 
within four years.3  The two cardiac events 
happened within a year, so a repeat coronary 
angiogram was not performed. For further 
investigation, an electrocardiogram (ECG) 
12 lead test was  
conducted. There were no findings 
associated with a myocardial infarction, the 
patient was in sinus rhythm. For further 
investigation, a troponin blood exam was 
ordered, and the patient had highly elevated 
troponin levels with the second blood test 
within 6 hours of admission at 408 pg/mL.

The physician ordered a stat echocardiogram 
to pinpoint the source of the chest pain. The 
echocardiogram showed  
apical ballooning in systole (Figure 1) due to 
akinesis of the apex. The mid and basal 
segments of the left ventricle were 
hyperkinetic. By Simpson’s biplane in the 
apical four chamber there is a moderately 
reduced LVEF of 32.7%. In the apical two 
chambers the LVEF by Simpson’s biplane 
calculated at 58.1% and when averaged 
between both planes it gave an LVEF of 
49.4% (figure 2). This is mildly reduced 
LVEF for women.4

There is diastolic dysfunction of the left 
ventricle (LV). There is E/A wave reversal, 
the E/A ratio is 0.6, there is reduced tissue 
Doppler velocities in both the lateral (<10 
centimeters per second) and septal (<7 
centimeters per second) walls in the apical 
four chamber, and the max tricuspid 
regurgitation (TR) jet is at three meters per 
second. There is grade I diastolic

The patient was consulted for 
medication therapy management for her 
diagnosis, which is the standard care. Patient 
was prescribed lisinopril which is an 
angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) 
inhibitor, which helps control hypertension 
and aid in heart recovery.6  In some cases, 
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy goes away on its

own within a few weeks.1,2The patient was 
discharged with a follow up echocardiogram 
in three months. However, there was no 
follow up echocardiogram within the three 
months for comparison. 
 
Discussion 
A 2D echocardiogram gives us an 
assessment of hemodynamic of the heart in 
real time to rule out critical findings and act 
promptly when needed.  There needs to be 
careful evaluation  to distinguish from an 
AMI or CAD, similar symptoms will arise, 
such as chest pain. Although no other 
cardiac imaging modality was used for this 
case, the echocardiogram gave strong 
evidence for TTC non-invasively and 
without radiation exposure. 
Echocardiography also offers  global 
longitudinal strain (GLS) which is a high 
sensitive method for assessing left ventricle 
systolic and diastolic function with TTC and 
helps distinguish cardiac event from an 
AMI.7 GLS may provide better predictors of 
clinical outcomes during recovery.7,8  A 
normal expected GLS should be around -20 
+/-  and a normal LVEF greater than 5527,8
 In abnormal LV function, GLS will %.8
become a smaller absolute value number, 
closer to zero and LVEF will typically 
decrease with abnormal wall motion.  
In patients that present with apical 
ballooning and apex akinesis, additional 
apical sweeps and imaging enhancing 
contrast may be used to rule out an apical 
thrombus. However, it is important to  note 
that there are a variety of presentations of 
TTC and some subtypes may have a lower 
chance of thrombus formation when 
compared to apical ballooning. 
Echocardiography can improve outcomes 
for patients by ruling out or capturing acute 
in real time and avoid further clinical 
complications.  
Furthermore, although TTC has 
favorable prognosis with LV systolic

function recovery,1,2 It is important to note 
that there are possible complications that 
sonographers should rule out with classic 
apical ballooning and hyperkinetic basal 
segments. Evaluation in echocardiography 
in hyperdynamic basal LV segments with a 
prominent septal sigmoid may present with 
an outflow obstruction (LVOTO) or systolic 
anterior motion (SAM) of the MV.2 In apical 
ballooning it's important to evaluate for 
mitral regurgitation (MR) due to papillary 
displacement and leaflet tethering, and 
apical thrombus due to stagnant blood flow 
in the hypokinetic or akinetic apex.2 This can 
put patients at risk for a cardioembolism 
stroke or systemic embolism event.8 
Thorough evaluation of this cardiomyopathy 
will lead to patients having better outcomes.  
Conclusion 
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can present 
similarly to an AMI or CAD and can be 
misdiagnosed. It is important to carefully 
evaluate labs to rule out CAD and AMI. 
Assess LV function, rule out possible critical 
complications with TTC, and track recovery 
of left ventricle through GLSl for follow up 
echocardiograms to predict clinical 
outcomes during recovery. Given the 
underrepresentation of women in

At the end of May, I experienced a canon event that all
Seattle University seniors go through: realizing that my
time in school was nearly over. I’ve spent the past week
frantically making sure that I’ve tied up loose ends—
finishing my final projects, packing up my apartment and
attending every end-of-year event I can. Part of that means
closing out my time as a student journalist—this is my last
story with The Spectator.
Choosing a “closing message” is hard. Should I write about
what my favorite NBA team, the Minnesota Timberwolves,
need to do this offseason to not get humiliated in the
Western Conference Finals next year? Should I just
dedicate a page to plugging our podcast, Cherry Street
Chat? Should I express my disappointment in too much
positive Spectator coverage of the “sport” (emphasis on the quotation marks) pickleball this year?
While these ideas sound fun, I also recognize that there are much more pressing issues that deserve attention right now. As a result,
I would like to talk about the importance of student journalism and student speech for my final Spectator story.
I first saw the power of student journalism as a high school student. Going to a public school, my student newspaper was protected
by First Amendment speech rights, allowing us to accurately and fairly report on any topic we could imagine. From exposing a
teacher’s inappropriate messages to a former student to reporting on our principal’s expired administrative license, we uncovered
stories that not even the pros were reporting on. 
My experience as a high school journalist taught me the importance of the First Amendment. Without speech protections, we
would have risked censorship from our school, and nobody would have known the full extent of each story. It’s because of that
experience that my journalistic motto has always been to “tell the story that otherwise would not be told.” 
That’s why it makes me sad to see that in 2025, our First Amendment rights might be under attack. 
As I write this, there is a push for Congress to defund America’s only public-owned broadcast companies, National Public Radio
(NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Since just a handful of companies own the vast majority of American media, I believe
that public broadcasting is essential to make sure the people will always have a voice. 
Additionally, President Donald Trump said on his campaign trail that he would consider stripping broadcast stations of their licenses
for “bad coverage” and throwing journalists in jail for using anonymous sources. While these two ideas have not materialized, they
reflect a growing disdain for the media in the U.S.
Free speech is at the core of American values, and a threat to the speech rights of the press is a threat to the speech rights of the

people. Going forward, I think we all have to make a decision: do we want to foster and support freedom of speech, or are we alright
with it being taken away from us?
This is a decision that I believe Seattle University needs to make too. As a private school, Seattle U has no legal obligation to give its
students First Amendment speech protections. The university’s student media policy states that the school is “legally responsible
for the content and conduct of all its publications.” With the school acting as the publisher, The Spectator could be legally subject to
censorship for any content Seattle U disagrees with. 
I’m not saying the university hopes or wants to censor The Spectator, but stating the fact that it has the ability to ultimately make
final decisions on our publication. This is troublesome to me, because without speech protections my high school paper would have
been silenced for our groundbreaking reporting—we almost went to court over a censorship attempt. Without speech protections,
we wouldn’t have been able to tell the stories that otherwise would not have been told. Seattle U’s student journalists deserve equal
speech protections to my high school self.
As I mentioned earlier, Seattle U is at a crossroads. Our university must decide to back our First Amendment rights, or stay on the
path that is threatening the news industry and free speech as a whole.
A just and humane world is only maintained when there is someone to stand up to corruption and the abuse of power. I don’t plan on
sitting anytime soon.

Before students begrudgingly roll from their beds for their
8 a.m. classes, the Seattle University women’s basketball
team is hard at work. The Redhawks’ practices start at 7:30
a.m. sharp, and this year, the team has a lot of new faces.
Following the 2023-24 season, the Redhawks underwent a
massive roster overhaul after losing their top five scorers to
the transfer portal. The 13-member team was reduced to
just two players, leaving head coach Skyler Young with a tall
order.
“It’s a complete undertaking. Obviously, bringing in a whole
new roster was going on,” Young said. “But you got to build
a program the right way. And what it’s about is getting the
foundational players in.”
The new team has 11 players, shy of the NCAA’s roster cap of 15 with Candy Edokpaigbe and Nicole Benini joining since The
Spectator’s last check-in last May. Edokpaigbe, a Freshman Guard, is one piece of Young’s foundation. She’s standing at an average
of 29.9 minutes played each game, with a field goal percentage of 54.3% and a three-point percentage of 30.8%, both above the
Western Athletic Conference (WAC) average.
This academic year was Edokpaigbe’s first time in the U.S. She played for three club teams in Italy before choosing Seattle U.
“I was born in the south of Italy,” Edokpaigbe said. “I embraced the opportunity [to play for Seattle U] because I had the chance to
follow my studies.”

One player who is no stranger to Redhawk red is Julianna Walker, a Senior guard from Tacoma, Wash. Walker stuck around after the
2023-24 season and wore a cream-colored hoodie after practice as she spoke about adapting to nine new faces in one season.
“It was a pretty big change, but nothing I’m not used to. I’m a very welcoming person, so I welcomed them with open arms, and we
got to know each other pretty quick,” Walker said.
Walker, in her third season on the team, has a former opponent on her side now in Tamia Stricklin, a Redshirt Junior forward.
Stricklin hails from Renton, Wash., and played for Seattle Prep in high school.
“I think we played against each other a couple times growing up, but now that [Tamia] came back home and is here at SU now, we’ve
had a couple moments to really sit down and get to know each other,” Walker said.
Connecting off the court is a focus of Young’s coaching style. The self-described “relationship coach” meets with players weekly for
conversations that usually stray from basketball. Through this care for the whole person of his players, it’s clear why Seattle U
picked him to be the school’s sixth head women’s basketball coach.
The university also picked him because of his coaching history. While an assistant coach at the University of Portland from 2018-23,
the Pilots won two West Coast Conference (WCC) championships. His pride in those achievements comes through when he speaks
about them, but Seattle U’s impending move to the WCC allays any bravado.
“I gotta watch what we say, because we’re going to the WCC against the purple people down south,” Young said.
Games against Young’s former comrades in purple at the University of Portland are already on his mind. The WCC goes beyond the
banks of the Willamette, however. Schools like Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga, though the latter recently announced they will depart the
conference in 2026, pose tough competition for the Redhawks next season.

But back in the WAC, the new-look team has not had a strong introduction to the season. Going into their Jan. 23 and 25 games,
they stood at 0-4 in conference play, with a scoring offense ranked last in the conference.
After a Jan. 22 practice, Walker expressed optimism going into the weekend’s conference games against the University of Texas
Arlington and Utah Valley University.
“We’re off to a rocky start, you know, but I think, especially after our last game, we picked it up,” Walker said. “We’ve been working
our butts off in practice, not that we normally don’t, but I think we’re hungry and we want to win, so I think we’re due for a win.”
UT Arlington came into Thursday’s game off Jan. 16 a loss to the other incoming Redhawk foe, Utah Valley. At the time, they were
ranked second in the WAC with a 3-1 record. 
Arlington fans made their presence felt in the Redhawk Center, due to the return of a former Redhawk and Lynnwood, Wash.
native, Taliyah Clark. Clark played two seasons for Seattle U before her move to Texas under previous head coach Suzy Barcomb.
You could call it vengeance; the last time she faced the Redhawks in 2023, she dropped 23 points.
On the court Thursday, the Redhawks kept the Mavericks in check during the first three quarters. Christeina Bryan, a Graduate
forward, had a dominant performance with 12 points and 13 rebounds. This was her first career double-double.
“My mentality is always to match the physicality, always to outwork my opponent you know I never ever want my opponent to do
better than me so I’m always gonna fight and just be that great player that my team needs,” Bryan said.
Bryan and Coach Young both noted that the game against Arlington was the first game all 11 members of the team were present.
Struggles with injuries across the pre-season and into conference play sidelined members of the team.
“It was really hard for us because we needed the bodies, whether in practice and in games, it was really hard for us but despite that
we decided to show up for each other every single day and fight until that person can come back and who’s there is out there,” Bryan
said.
Early fouls from Edokpaigbe put her in danger of fouling out. As a result, Edokpaigbe only played 10 minutes despite starting.
In the fourth quarter, the Redhawk offense struggled, and the team gave Arlington 17 free throw chances. The 12 they made
pushed them over the edge for a 70-58 Redhawks loss, pushing their conference record to 0-5.
Two days later, the team was in Orem, Utah, for a game against the Utah Valley Wolverines. The Redhawks were unable to snap
their losing streak, coming in with a final score of 99-55.
Even with the loss, there were still points of positivity for Seattle U. Walker made four of five three-pointers and finished the game
with 14 points, the most on the team. Stricklin shot 50% and scored 10 points.
In the last two minutes of the game, Seattle U did not score. Amanda Barcello and Orem native Tahlia White scored 17 and 23
points, respectively, and the Wolverines’ defense caused the Redhawks to leave the court with 36 turnovers.
After UT Arlington and Utah Valley, the Redhawk women’s basketball team has ten games left in conference play. In our discussion
about the season, Coach Young iterated the same phrase, calling it the “march toward March.”
“Nobody remembers November or December,” Young said. “We try to just be the best version of ourselves into the end of February
and March.”
Six games into conference play, the team is still hoping the roster will click into place. Last year, the team did not qualify for the WAC
tournament and the previous year, they were eliminated in the second round. Just like Coach Young, Tamia Stricklin was still
focused on March’s WAC Tournament after the game against UT Arlington.
“We’re a new team, we’re all a new roster so I think it’s just a matter of time putting things together,” Stricklin said.
After this season, the WCC awaits. The transition brings previously mentioned new levels of competition, but the team sees it as a
positive. Young is more familiar with the styles of play in that conference and said he already knows what hotels his team will stay in
next year.
“We gotta do our job on the recruiting level, but I feel great about it because that’s where I was for so long and a lot of us coaches
haven’t changed,” Young said.
Early matchups with WCC schools could serve as an indicator of how the team will fare next year. Earlier this year, Seattle U played
the University of Portland on their turf and lost 78-55. The previous year, the two schools played each other at the Redhawk Center
and Seattle U lost 89-61.
Coaches and players in the program alike feel their record doesn’t speak for them, only standing as a reminder of work to be done.
Even after the loss to UT Arlington, Young was unwavering in his belief in the team.
“We’re gonna be a very hard team to beat when we stop going through those droughts. The dial in and the effort and the attitude
right now is great and awesome even despite what our record is right now,” Young said.
There are six home games left for Redhawk women’s basketball. Next up is conference leader Grand Canyon University, who the
Redhawks will play early Nov. 30 for an 11 a.m. game.

All My Favorite Soccer Players
Are Retired [OPINION]

Okay, I’ll admit that the title is a little dramatic. There are
still plenty of soccer players that I love playing currently:
Sam Coffey, Sophia Wilson, Naomi Girma, Lynn Biyendolo, I
could go on. But the players I grew up idolizing have all
basically retired.
I played soccer for approximately 13 years of my life. As a
young girl from the U.S. who played the sport, it was
unspoken that I adored the United States Women’s
National Soccer Team (USWNT). While major soccer
tournaments and games had been on my TV before, the
first event I remember watching was the 2015 FIFA
Women’s World Cup. I was 11 years old, and even though my family was on vacation for half the event, I made sure to watch every
game that the USWNT played in.
I was hooked. On Alex Morgan, who I had a t-shirt for, on Megan Rapinoe, on Tobin Heath. After that World Cup, I was finally a
soccer fan. 
I made sure to keep watching and following in the years after. The USWNT and professional women’s soccer as a whole were
frequent conversations before, during, and after my own soccer practices. I went to games for my local NWSL club, the Portland
Thorns, and got to see the players I idolized in person. Morgan and Heath both played for the Thorns for a time, and getting to
watch these people play was magical. Christine Sinclair, a Canadian soccer player and one of the greatest of all time, also played for
the Thorns. 
At the time I was playing soccer, seeing all these players moving the game of professional women’s soccer forward was everything
to me. Many players from the 2015 USWNT World Cup Team were also involved in the lawsuit against US Soccer for equal pay. Part
of the reason I admire these players so much is how much they pushed for equality in the sport in all aspects. Many current players
signing landmark contracts would not be where they are without the trailblazers who I grew up with. Their influence on the game is
huge. I love women’s soccer, and getting to see it grow because of these players is so special. 
But people can’t be professional athletes forever. While many of the players from that 2015 World Cup team have long since
retired, there were quite a few still playing until recently.
Rapinoe and Ali Krieger both retired at the end of the 2023 NWSL season. I was lucky enough to be able to attend one of Rapinoe’s
last games with the Seattle Reign and of her career. I remember standing on the field holding back tears, watching one of my idols
say goodbye to this game and city that she loved so dearly. I couldn’t help but feel that this was the end of an era. I didn’t expect how
much that would continue to be true.
In this past 2024 NWSL season, Morgan, Sinclair, Kelley O’Hara, Becky Sauerbrunn and Alyssa Naeher have all retired. I was also
unexpectedly at Naeher’s second-to-last professional game. While studying abroad, I decided on a whim to spend a little too much
money to see a USWNT v. England friendly at Wembley Stadium. While it didn’t end up being the most exciting game, I am glad I was
able to see another one of my idols in one of her last matches. 
It is hard to put into words just how much these players have meant to me. I didn’t realize how much it would affect me until I
watched the recent USWNT games in the SheBelieves Cup. The names and faces out on the pitch were all new. And the players I
idolized for so long aren’t there anymore. It’s a little bittersweet in all honesty. 
Knowing how important the players on the USWNT are to me, it made me sad for a while that young soccer players don’t get to
have those people to look up to. But then I reminded myself that there are still amazing athletes on the team. 
This past summer in my job working at a summer camp, I would often ask kids who their favorite soccer player was when they told
me they liked the sport. More often than not, they would tell me it was Sophia Wilson. They may not be growing up with the same
people I admire, but there are so many players still to look up to. 
Heroes change from generation to generation. I’m glad that the 2015 USWNT World Cup Team got to be mine.

The housing selection process is often cutthroat and
stressful for many students simply trying to find a place to
live. For some trans students, however, this process was
made even more difficult this year.
First-year Psychology Major Maya Stefanovic and his
roommate had put themselves in a group on the housing
portal and were ready to select housing. The two were
planning to live in the gender inclusive housing in
Bellarmine Hall. When their housing selection time came
around, Stefanovic went to put his group in a room and ran
into an error message.
“We checked both of our accounts, and all of our
preferences lined up. We were both in gender inclusive
housing,” Stefanovic said. “Neither of us had requested
anything that should make us have an error code.”
Stefanovic’s roommate ended up calling Housing and Residence Life (HRL) three different times, each with no answer. After leaving
a voicemail, they did eventually get a call back, and the two were manually added to a room in Bellarmine. 
Despite being manually placed into a room, Stefanovic received an email after the housing selection process concluded, saying that
he had not chosen a room and had been placed into Campion Hall. Stefanovic was very concerned about this development, as he
thought his place in Bellarmine was confirmed. What made the situation more stressful was Campion’s lack of gender neutral
restrooms–something Stefanovic listed as a priority when choosing where to live. Luckily, he was able to get back into his room in
Bellarmine after contacting HRL.
Via Tay, a first-year accounting major, ran into similar issues when selecting housing, but did not have the same outcome. When her
selection time came up, Tay and her roommate tried to put themselves into a room in Bellarmine and ran into an error code. After
being put on hold with HRL for around 10 minutes, she was told to refresh and try again. When that did not solve the issue, she had
to call back and be on hold again.
“By the time we called again, [the rooms in Bellarmine] were gone, so we ended up being at [Xavier], which is another issue because
Bell is the only building with ADA bathrooms, which a lot of gender non-conforming students use, on every floor,” Tay said. 
Similarly to Stefanovic, having access to gender neutral restrooms was very important to Tay, and she is unsure how living in Xavier
without access to those facilities will go.

Juno Fuja, a first-year marketing major, also ended up in Xavier after trying to live with their roommate in Bellarmine. Fuja and their
roommate ran into the same errors when trying to assign themselves a room.
“When we actually tried choosing our room, it said that we couldn’t room together, even though we’re both assigned male at birth,
and both had non-binary as our gender,” Fuja said. 
Like Stefanovic and Tay, Fuja and their roommate called HRL to get the issues sorted, and spent around 15 to 20 minutes on the
phone before eventually being placed into a room in Xavier. 
Even some with early registration times had issues. First-year Communication and Media Major Tristan Scott was in a more
complicated housing situation, as he had applied to be a resident assistant (RA) and was not in a housing group with his potential
roommate. RAs do not hear if they have been hired or not until early April. Scott’s roommate was waiting to hear back about the
possibility of getting a single room through disability services. Since both were unsure of their housing status, they decided to room
together for the time being. 
Because of his early registration time, every building was open when it was time for Scott to select a room, which was very exciting
for him.
“It was really important for me this year to get Bellarmine because it’s the only dorm on campus with gender neutral restrooms,
which is really helpful for me as a trans person,” Scott said. “I know that if I use a women’s restroom, I run the risk of making people
uncomfortable because, especially out of the corner of your eye at first glance, I don’t look like a woman, and so I don’t want to make
people uncomfortable.”
Scott placed himself in a room, and found out later that day that his roommate would not be getting a single dorm. He called HRL to
see if his roommate could be added to the room, but that was not an option. Scott was told he could remove himself from the room,
create a roommate group and then re-add themselves, or wait until his roommate’s housing time so they could add themselves.
Scott was worried they would lose their room in Bellarmine if he removed himself, so the two decided to wait until the roommate’s
selection time later in the day. 
Before Scott’s roommate could join the room, another person had added themselves to it. From the information provided on the
housing portal, Scott found out that this other person was a cisgender woman. 
“For me, I have no issues on a basic line living with a cisgender woman, but I thought it was a little odd. There’s a question that asks,
‘Are you comfortable living with a cisgender person?’ and I selected no,” Scott said. “I don’t want to put someone in an uncomfortable
position. I have a pretty typical teenage boy room. I look like a guy, I act like a guy, and so if you’re coming in expecting to live with a
woman, I don’t want to make you disappointed or uncomfortable.”
After calling HRL again, Scott was told that his only options were to stay in the room or remove himself and find a different one. He
admitted that he did not find it reasonable for HRL to kick someone out of the room, but all the other rooms in Bellarmine were full.
He expressed to the person on the phone that he was anxious about moving to a dorm without gender neutral restrooms, but felt as
if they were not being receptive to his comments. 
“I think it’s a little bit odd that I, as a trans person, who would benefit from having [access to gender neutral restrooms], had to
remove myself from that situation, basically choosing like, ‘do you want to be comfortable in your room, or do you want to be
comfortable in the bathroom?’ It’s one or the other,” Scott said. 
Scott eventually decided to remove himself from the room and place himself and his roommate in a place in Xavier. Although he did
not want to live in a dorm without gender neutral restrooms, he ultimately decided that his safety in having a trans roommate was
more important.
“If I’m placed with a cisgender person that I don’t know, there’s always the risk that they’re not going to respect me, they’re not
going to respect my identity,” Scott said. “Even if I’m placed with a trans person who I don’t get along with, even if I don’t like them, I
know that on a very basic level, I am safe and respected in that room.”
While many students shared similar problems throughout their housing selection process, some of the staff at HRL were surprised
that students were running into issues.
“That shouldn’t have happened,” Tim Albert, associate director of housing, said. “Even if they had a different gender, the way the
system is set up, on the back end, the roommate group allows them, as long as one of them is transgender, gender non-conforming,
non-binary, it will allow them to sign up.”
According to Albert, HRL provides overrides in the software that allow students who have identified as trans or gender non-
conforming to be able to select rooms with their preferred roommate. 
Tyler Murphy, assistant director of Housing Operations and HRL, explained that this override process happens after the deadline to
create roommate groups has passed. He stated that the students who ran into issues could have potentially had them because they
created roommate groups after this deadline.
“Not to put blame on any student, but just to kind of figure out the puzzle pieces in the timeline where these could be happening,”
Murphy said. “That doesn’t take away from the stress and the feeling of that moment, but that does kind of explain the technical
side of things.”
Both Murphy and Albert agreed that this could be an area of improvement for next year. They discussed the potential of creating
some kind of guide or refined timeline so students have a better understanding of the deadlines and when certain things need to
happen in the housing selection process. 
“We can always improve the process to help provide a better experience for our students,” Albert said. “Just because we’re one of,
as far as I know, two Catholic institutions that have a [gender inclusive housing] policy…we don’t want to just rest on our laurels.”
Although Albert and Murphy expressed the desire to continue making improvements and changes to the housing selection process,
many of the students who ran into issues have already lost trust in HRL.
“I felt very dismissed and not really listened to, which was definitely a little bit stressful because part of the reason that I chose
Seattle U was because it is so accepting, welcoming, diverse, especially as a trans person. That was just a little bit disheartening to
feel like that didn’t matter,” Scott said.
Tay, Fuja and Stefanovic also chose to attend Seattle U because they felt it was a welcoming place for those in the LGBTQ+
community. After their experiences with housing, they aren’t so sure of that anymore.
“I think for a school that really prides itself on being inclusive, they need to work harder on helping out their trans student body,
because they’re not really doing it well right now,” Stefanovic said.
If students are dissatisfied with the results of the housing selection process, Albert encourages them to reach out for a solution.
“If there is a student who is non-binary, gender non-conforming or transgender, who needs access to a gender inclusive restroom,
they just need to contact housing and we will ensure that they have access to a bathroom that they can use that they are
comfortable in,” Albert said. 
As a university that promotes the education of the “whole person,” that must include caring for the whole person as well. And a safe,
inclusive home environment is fundamental to both care and education.
