Being a college ski bum is not a new concept. The snow
sport is extremely expensive and hard to access, so
university students lacking in disposable income have been
finding ways to get up to the mountains for cheap for as
long as skiing has been around. However, most students
who want to spend their college winters on the slopes flock
to schools renowned for their proximity to good skiing—
schools like the University of Utah, Montana State, and the
University of Colorado Boulder. What happens, though,
when a slope-minded individual tries to accomplish the
same thing at a school like Seattle University? 
This year, I have been trying to find that out. Leaving home
driven to become a better skier, I told myself that I would
get up to the mountain no matter what it takes. It has taken
a lot, though, especially as Seattle U lacks much of the
infrastructure that is necessary for getting students on the
mountain regularly. 
The school isn’t entirely unsupportive—UREC Outdoors offers two
weekly shuttles that are completely free to students. One is an
afternoon bus to Snoqualmie Pass, which is 50 minutes away and a
slightly smaller resort than the other Washington alternatives, for
night skiing. The other is a morning bus to Crystal Mountain, the
premiere Washington ski destination, which is about two hours
away. 
While convenient and easy, these shuttles have a few issues. First,
both resorts that they service are on the Ikon Pass, and holders of
the competing Epic Pass lack any school supported way to get up.
Additionally, there are only six of each van offered throughout the
year. While a nice auxiliary option, these vans are not a consistent
way to get in a large number of ski days. 
Ski Club and Stoke SU are both organizations that offer some support for aspiring skiers. However, a lack of funding from the school
means that both clubs have no formal transportation for skiing. Additionally, while both are useful for networking and potentially
finding friends to take you up, there can be logistical issues. For example, I have an Ikon pass and almost all of the Ski Club are on

Epic, meaning that unless I buy an expensive day ticket, skiing with them is out of the question. 
Finally, the main way to get up is to have a car. However, not only is owning and maintaining a car expensive, especially for first and
second-year students, driving to the resort and back can cost upwards of $30 a day in gas money, along with expensive parking
reservations for weekend days. 
Being faced with these options, I tried to find other ways to get up. The most consistent way to get rides is through the University of
Washington (UW)’s snow club, which offers access to its ridesharing service and group trips for a one-time fee of $30. Rides are
free, as the club pays for member rideshares. However, I have found that competition for spots is very difficult, often filling up
within minutes. Additionally, while some drivers are willing to pick you up at Seattle U, others will leave from UW, meaning you have
to haul your gear onto the light rail and walk to a meetup point. 
Clearly, ski access from Seattle U is pretty limited, which left me frustrated. However, this situation made me turn to the final, and
most important way to get rides—tapping into the local community. While this option is much more nebulous than the others, and
comes about differently for everyone, it is essential to getting the most out of your college skiing experience. 
Random encounters at the climbing gym have introduced me to a few 20- and 30-something-year-old professionals who regularly
go up to the mountain and are more than willing to take a struggling college student. By paying my share for gas while being friendly
and passionate, I’ve been invited to local rideshare group chats and even the opportunity to go on trips outside of Washington,
which remain affordable through sharing costs within the group. 
That one example isn’t the only way to create community and get rides—ski connections can be made through people in your
classes, your extracurriculars, on forums and through a variety of different methods. Seattle has a strong outdoor community, and
engaging with it is bound to make you friends who will help you to enjoy the mountain with them. 
I have eight days up this season, and I’m hoping to get to 20 before the snow melts. While it’s definitely doable, it will be difficult, and
that’s part of the fun. My story goes to show that, passion, a near-obnoxious persistence and a drive to cultivate community, anyone
at this school can make their ski-bum dreams a reality.

For the first time since joining the Western Athletic
Conference (WAC), a Seattle University men’s swimmer has
won gold at the WAC Swim and Diving Championships.
Danielis Kvederis, a sophomore on the Seattle University
men’s swim team, brought home gold in the 200-yard
backstroke event March 1, with a time of 1:43.53, also
breaking the Seattle U record for this event. 
Kvederis was born and raised in Klaipeda, Lithuania,
beginning his swimming career at the age of eight. In his
time at Seattle U, Kvederis has set multiple individual
school records, four of which occurred during the WAC
Championships this year. Kvederis also made it on the
podium for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.88. 
The following is an excerpt from a March 7 interview.

DD: Why Seattle U?  
DK: I came here to Seattle to study and swim. It was just one of the few opportunities that I got at the time when I was looking for a
school to study at back in Lithuania. Yeah, so this place caught my eye because it is kind of, I would say, a small school compared to
other schools. Especially our coach Joe Dykstra, he’s been training us for a while now, for two years now, and I think his program is
really good and I liked it a lot.  
DD: How was it coming to the United States from Lithuania?  
DK: Yeah, so it’s been kind of hard and awkward at first… As a freshman from the start of the year, my roommate was Hawkins
Wendt, and he was the one who kind of introduced me to American culture. He showed me what’s going around. He helped me with
school, showed me a lot of places here in Seattle, and I think he was the one who actually helped me to understand more about
Seattle U and American culture.  
DD: What do you do during the day of, or day before a meet? Do you have any pre-meet rituals?  
DK: I use the technique of visualizing myself swimming before races. I tend to do it two or three weeks before my race, so I imagine

myself swimming. The night before I tend to not think about it at all. Whenever I come up to the start, I’m ready for it. My ritual
before the starts specifically, I like to grab a little bit of water and splash around my chest and on my face. Then I do a “dolphin burst”
out of my mouth with the water or something like that. So this is one of my rituals that I do and I think that actually helps me to just
swim faster.  
DD: What was going through your head during the 200-backstroke in the WAC Championship? 
DK: I wasn’t pressuring myself too much. I just kind of knew that I’m gonna win at that point because I was feeling myself, I was
visualizing that before, and my mindset was kind of chill. I walked to the blocks, I see my team shouting, screaming my name, I kind
of push my chest a little bit. I was so excited to swim… After the swimming, it was so amazing to just come out of the water and see
my teammates happy and smiling because Seattle U just got a medal in the 200-backstroke.  
DD: When you realized you had won, what were you thinking at that point?  
DK: I was kind of shocked, not gonna lie. I just smacked the water, I was so happy, and I saw my teammates’ faces. It was just an
amazing time. I loved it, I wish I can get into that place again and just repeat that scene.  
DD: What does the offseason look like for you?  
DK: In the summer I don’t swim a lot, I’m not gonna lie, so the main season when I swim is fall, winter, and spring. It’s the offseason
for college swimming, but as an international swimmer I’m still going to swim for the Lithuanian team and I’m going to go back to
Lithuania. So I’m still keeping my workout. I’m still pressuring myself, still weightlifting, swimming a lot, still doing around 5k per day,
something around that.  
DD: What’re you looking forward to in the future?  
DK: I mean breaking the record again, that would be nice. I feel like I can do it, so I don’t even set this as a goal, I just know that I’m
gonna do it.  
Kvederis has already made a major impact on the team in just two years with the program, setting multiple school records and
bringing home medals for Seattle U. Kvederis’s times in the 200 and 100-yard backstroke events qualified him for the CSCAA
National Invitational Championships in Ocala, Fla. He will head over March 13.

In the early morning after Easter Sunday, news broke that
Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic church, had died at
88. Francis was a hugely important figure to many Catholics
and non-Catholics alike, and the news was immediately met
with mourning, tributes and reflections upon the pope’s life.
Francis’ tenure and legacy are largely characterized by his
progressive stances on issues concerning both Catholic
theology and the world at large. His humility, steadfast
moral compass, decisiveness in leading the church and
emphasis on connecting with regular people made him a
beloved figure to many.
Through his time as Pope, he was sympathetic to
marginalized groups and had a large humanitarian focus,
fought against church corruption, had a more accepting
stance than many Catholic thought leaders on LGBTQ+ issues, championed the environment and directed the church to be less
centralized and more involved in the world.
Francis was distinct because of his departure from many of the norms and traditions that previous popes had followed. He was the
first Jesuit pope and the first pope since the eighth century born outside of Europe. He wore simpler and less ornate garments than
popes before him and often refused many of the luxuries of papacy—he donated his salary to charities, lived in a small apartment
and often chose public transport over private escorts.
Francis was also markedly different from previous popes in his writings and actions as the head of the church. 
David Kwon, an assistant professor of theology and religious studies, described Francis’ predecessors, Benedict XVI and John Paul
II, as systemic theologians who focused on translating abstract ideas about theology into human action. This sharply contrasts with
Francis’ approach as a practical theologian, who reached out to the people through his experience in ministry.
Fr. Trung Pham, S.J., described how this position as a practical theologian helped Francis guide the church and its leaders to be more
involved in the lives and communities of the people they served.
“He talks about how the church should move away from clericalism. He loved for the leaders, priests and people of the church to go
out and preach the gospel instead of trying to hang on to the institution,” Pham said.

Pham, who briefly met Pope Francis last December as a part of his involvement with the Eucharistic Youth Group, spoke very highly
of the pope.
“[Francis was a] champion with the marginalized, with the poor, compassionate to the people he preached to, and care with
everybody, but especially for the earth,” Pham shared.
Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, aligned the church staunchly against the
consumerism and industrialism that cause climate change and environmental degradation, and reinforced an extremely pro-
environmentalist stance. The document is one of the most important moments from his papal career.
In addition to his environmentalism, he also showed some support for other progressive causes. While he still upheld the church’s
views that same-sex relationships are not permissible, he argued that LGBTQ+ individuals could and should still be blessed,
famously saying in an interview, “who am I to judge.”
In addition, he also took strong humanitarian stances. Up until he died, Francis would call a parish in Gaza almost daily. He also
championed migrants, criticized governments (including the U.S.) that instituted anti-immigration policy and was a proponent of
interfaith collaboration.
Francis was also criticized for many of his actions, often for good reason. He still upheld that LGBTQ+ people could not get married
under Catholic doctrines, was anti-abortion and anti-contraception, and didn’t allow women to become priests. He received
pushback for not doing enough for the causes he championed, and for the way he handled child sexual abuse cases within the
church. Others argued that he was too left-leaning and too political, even going as far as to openly call him heretical.
While popular in much of the Western world, his policies on homosexuality received pushback from many Catholic leaders. Kwon
detailed how it can be easy to miss the full scope of the church’s reach and influence.
“The Catholic church is a global church. So, the church in Asia and the church in Africa is a bit different than the church in Europe
and the church in North America and South America… Some parts of Asian and African and South American churches can be more
conservative, so there also [has been] a resistance movement [against Francis’ policies] for the last 10 years,” Kwon explained.
Despite these criticisms, many people were happy to see progressive perspectives at the highest level of the church, especially
considering how conservative and traditional the institution often is. Additionally, while some disagree with his specific viewpoints
or the implications of Catholic doctrine, many view Francis’ position as a man who committed himself to justice and morality, and
spoke out to influence the world for good.
In the wake of Francis’ death, Seattle University and other Catholic institutions in Seattle have been observing a period of mourning
for the pope as part of their programming. A portrait of Francis is up in the Chapel of Saint Ignatius, and in addition to incorporating
reflections upon his life into the regularly scheduled masses of the week, the chapel held a requiem mass on Wednesday, April 30 at
12:30 p.m.
Yvonne Perez, a recent Seattle U graduate with a degree in psychology, attended the mass on Sunday, April 26, where Fr. Arturo
Araujo, S.J. gave a homily that reflected upon the way that Francis worked to enact good upon the world. After the mass, Perez
reflected on the example that Francis set for Catholics like her and how he worked to reform the church.
“It’s been beautiful to see that there is progression within the church. They want to welcome all people, and maybe it’s not reflected
in every community through the world, but I think that it’s beautiful that Francis was a very prime example of how we should act,”
Perez said.
Francis didn’t just give Catholics hope—especially in times of increasing political conflict, many mourn the stable, compassionate
perspective that Francis offered, whether they were religious or not.
“[People] could identify that this was a person who was a unique kind of a moral leader, the moral leader of the world. I can’t think of
a person from the last 20 years that’s been the equal of Pope Francis as being sort of the moral leader of the world. I don’t know
whether that links to religion,” Fr. Stephen Sundborg S.J., a Jesuit and the chancellor of Seattle U, said.
Some people even connect with Francis as a leader more than they connect with the church itself. 
Olivia Rankin, a second-year communications major, was saddened when she heard the news.
“I cried and I don’t even believe in God, but I cried that he had passed,” Rankin shared. “Even though I don’t believe anymore, I was
like, ‘who’s going to tell me and the people that are most important to me, how to enact good in the world?’”
Rankin is a prime example of how the Pope’s positions and demeanor made him appealing as a leader, even in the absence of a
religious obligation to follow his teachings. She attributes his grounded nature and relatability to why so many people like him.
“He was the Catholic ‘people’s princess,’ like he went out and met people. He had a lot of humility about him… he was for the people,
and I think that that is why he was such a beloved figure for so long, and I think that’s why he was really, really cool,” Rankin said.
Again, though, Francis was not only admired by those who are ideologically distant from him. He was also beloved to many Jesuits,
especially because he was the first Jesuit pope. Despite his position of authority, some Jesuits, like Sundborg, still viewed Francis as
part of the brotherhood.
“So even though he’s been Pope, I think we’ve also thought of him as our Jesuit brother, and therefore I think there’s a special kind of
bond that we felt with him and a pride in how he’s carried out what was asked of him,” Sundborg said.
Sundborg had the opportunity to speak with the pope for 45 minutes in 2014, and he shared how intimate and personal Francis
was, even in their brief interaction.
“I felt like he was so with us and present and listening and interested in who people were. It was almost like talking with an uncle. I
mean, he was a friendly person that we had this intimate kind of a conversation with… it really stands out as the highlight of my
Jesuit life,” Sundborg reflected.
Francis was a very special man, and some are worried that whoever replaces him will be unable to maintain the new course that he
charted for the Church. Others, though, are confident that his legacy will continue to inspire people to finish the work that he
started.
“I hold a lot of hope that he set a precedent that people want to fulfill and continue, because he was that girl,” Rankin said, looking to
the future.
In the coming days, a new pope will be elected through the conclave, but the memory of Pope Francis will continue to be honored
for years to come. As the leader of the one of the most powerful institutions on the planet, Francis did not make his mark through
strength, power or force, but through a deep and compassionate care for every person, and he served to inspire all of us, whether
we are simply a Jesuit university student, a staunch atheist, a devout Catholic or anything in between.

A Case For Pickleball [OPINION]

Like a lot of upper-middle-class families where I grew up,
my parents had enough money and flexibility in their work
schedules to make my extracurricular activities explorative
and numerous. I did karate, soccer, baseball, Shakespeare
club, even one archery lesson and much more. My parents
held the “educating the whole person” philosophy long
before my time at Seattle U. But as I grew older, and the
social pressure to “specialize” in something grew, the sport
that stuck with me was tennis.
Solving problems is a part of how we make sense of the
world, how the brain feeds the soul, and a process needed
for growth. This problem-solving ethic is easily applied to
sports—refining a technique, countering an opponent’s
strategy. For me, one of those formative moments came
during my first lesson at the South Austin Tennis Center. Having limited success keeping the ball in, my coach told me to try brushing
up on the ball using a grip that was rotated further western than my previous continental, “to get topspin, and hit the ball harder
without it going out.” 
By the end of the lesson, I could noticeably see the ball spinning head-over-heels as it left my racquet. I had felt myself improve, and
it was addictive. That feeling lasted me the rest of my childhood as I continued to play high school tennis for four years. But I was no
D-I (or probably even D-III) athlete, and after losing the structure and opportunity provided to me by public-school tennis, I stopped
playing.
Three years later, I encountered pickleball on the tail-end of the “COVID niche sports boom.”
I thought the game was a joke. It was clearly tennis for an inferior athlete. Everything looked the same, except in this “sport,” the
athletic ability needed to produce mutually rewarding gameplay was lower. My tennis elitism worked, successfully at first, to blind
me from seeing pickleball’s athletic legitimacy. 
For a sport to be successful, its athletic essence must be easily understandable, emotionally resonant and easily transferable among
and between players and spectators. This essence, often encapsulated by the phrase ‘the beauty of the game,’ is the quality that gets
players hooked. A sport’s ability to spread like a disease to those who come into contact with it is the start of its ascension towards a
community’s common cultural curriculum (think UCOR!), integrated at every level of society. 
Immediately, I could see how pickleball possessed some of these viral characteristics that were allowing it to grow at such a rapid
rate. You could play with anyone and have a good time (try saying that about tennis), and more importantly, I realized games were
happening everywhere. Every public outdoor court I looked into—Miller, Greenlake, Rainier Beach, Mount Baker, Beacon Hill— are
now dominated by a vibrant, and almost omnipresent, pickleball community. Go to Greenlake on any sunny day and you’ll find
50-100 pickleball players participating in open play. The same courts, if occupied by tennis players, would typically provide eight

players with athletic enrichment. 
But plenty has been written about the democratic egalitarianism of pickleball. It’s how most laymen know it, that game that’s easy
to play and super casual! Part of me is grateful that pickleball can draw such a wide range of engagement, keeping the sport growing
while creating amazingly diverse outdoor communities. Another part feels resentful. Resent because pickleball’s accessibility
means it draws a lot of hate when it tries to assert itself as a paddle sport with an identity and athletic legitimacy that exists
separately from tennis. Pickleball media is plagued with comments that contain these general sentiments: “go play a real sport,” “just
play tennis,” “nobody cares you fucking losers.” And while people in the real world aren’t unnecessarily hateful, their attitudes
towards pickleball are similar—that it’s a dulled-down version of tennis made to accommodate old people and the unathletic. I
resent and pity this attitude—it was once mine. 
When I first started playing, I thought I was better than everyone else just by virtue of a tennis background. I quickly found out I was
horrible, and that if I wanted to get better against high-level players, I needed to learn this game, not just play tennis. The longer I
watched, played and competed in this sport, the stronger my convictions grew that there is art in this game, there is a soul with
beauty and potential equal to any other competitive athletic endeavor humans have created. 
In these next paragraphs, I will attempt to explain why. Why pickleball should be a premier global paddle sport, and why it deserves
its own source of athletic legitimacy derived independently from the giant that is tennis (all discussion of gameplay is doubles).
Game Analysis: It’s Not Tennis (Disclaimer* technical pickletalk ahead!)
The “no volley zone” in pickleball, known as the kitchen, is the foundation on which the sport’s independence from others in the
racquet family rests. Pickleball’s small court size and slower-moving ball mean that being closer to the net is advantageous for both
players. There is little court space for passing shots, and if you try to continually drive from the baseline, villains will easily counter
your drives—it is very difficult to drive balls that are low with topspin and keep them in-play. To get around the limitations of driving,
you’ll often see players “dropping” the ball into the kitchen, where villains have no choice but to wait for the ball to bounce as the
primary way to get themselves up to the net. 
Thus, the game design eliminates the classic tennis doubles format of one up-one back; getting to the kitchen line at every
opportunity is crucial. When both teams are at the kitchen line, “dinking” often ensues. This is an element of the game that
commonly gets criticized; people see it as boring and unathletic. I think dinking is as suspenseful as a tie game in the fourth quarter.
The kitchen only extends seven feet from the net, meaning any ball even slightly popped up can be aggressively taken out of the air.
Being able to hit high-pace dinks that get your opponents out of position while simultaneously leaning in on the kitchen line to
speed up balls out of the air, or off the bounce, requires high-level shot recognition, deception, consistency and movement. Any
moment can be the one for attack—high-speed “firefights” or “hands battles” that require quick “counter shot” volleys don’t exist in
sports elsewhere, and produce some of the best athletic content in the paddle sport world.
From dinking we also get my three favorite shots in pickleball, the shots I believe truly separate the sport and give both players and
spectators a reason to uniquely engage with pickleball instead of other paddle sports. The first is the one-handed backhand flick or
roll. The roll and flick differ slightly in their respective techniques, but both are attacking volley shots that involve a unique wrist
pronation similar to a golf swing or frisbee throw. This is the difference maker in high-level pickleball. Assuming the player is right-
handed (most are), the “left side” of the court tends to be the dominant one as the left side player can cover the middle with their
forehand. This results in the majority of dink patterns being cross-court between the two left-side players (there is more space
between you and the player diagonal to you than the player directly across the net). Thus, when balls are popped up enough to be
taken out of the air, they usually come to the left side of players’ backhand—initiating the opportunity for the roll/flick speed up (you
use these shots respectively depending on the height of the ball and how aggressive you want to be). Being able to roll the ball out of
the air catches opponents by surprise, setting you up to put the next shot away and allowing you to dictate the point. This shot is
highly technical, and one that I had no prior skill development for from tennis—over a year into playing and I am just now starting to
figure it out. 
The next two are the “around the post” shot (the ATP) and the ernie. During cross-court dinking, the ball can be pushed far enough
out-wide to be outside the confines of the court—allowing a player to circumvent the net completely and hit ‘around the post.’ This
shot has been done before in tennis, but in pickleball, it happens almost every game. The shot requires putting a sort of bending-spin
on the ball reminiscent of a table tennis shot, and it’s exhilarating to hit and watch. The ernie is even more unique. Because the
pickleball court is much smaller, and dinking is played at a slower pace up-close, on certain shots traveling near the edge of the
court, the kitchen can be circumvented by jumping diagonally over to the far side of the net. Here, while you’re mid-jump, you can
extend your reach a few feet into the court, beyond what you would otherwise be able to from the kitchen line. This shot is
extremely dangerous as it cuts the distance between you and the villains in half, making it a very hard shot to counter, and a very fun
shot to watch as it is often unexpected (you have to wait to make the kitchen jump until the last second so the villain can’t recognize
it and change directions.) These shots—the flick/roll, the ATP and the ernie—are just some of the evidence as to why pickleball
deserves its own athletic identity and prestige, because while it’s a game that anyone can play, it’s not a game that anyone can play
well.
My analysis of the game could go on eternally—and there are certainly countless shots, point dynamics, strategies and techniques
that I haven’t touched on at all. This game is truly a puzzle; there are countless pieces.
The final point I’ll make is this: Even though I think pickleball is an incredibly amazing game, it isn’t “better” than tennis. More
importantly, pro pickleball players are not better athletes—it’s the opposite. Athletes at the top of global sports like table tennis or
tennis are undoubtedly more elite because they have a larger social network to pull from. But as pickleball continues to grow and
develop its institutions, this might shift. The pool will grow larger, and the future Carlos Alcaraz of pickleball might decide at the age
of seven, on an almost unconscious level, to play pickleball instead of tennis—it’s what all the cool kids are doing (is what I hope the
sentiment will be in fifteen years). 
If you’ve made it here, go play some serious pickleball! It’s a real sport, and it’s here to stay.

University’s Annual Drag Show

Seattle University’s LGBTQ+ club, Triangle Club, hosted its
annual drag show in the Campion Ballroom, with
attendance open to the public. The theme this year was
“Wickedly Queer,” a nod to the smash-hit musical and all
things magical. Triangle Club selects the theme for the drag
show fall quarter of each academic year to prepare for the
spring quarter performance.
Collin Durfee, a fourth-year political science major and
event coordinator for Triangle Club, was won over by the
theme due to “Wicked”’s staying power as a piece of media
and its iconic color palette of pink and green, which
festooned the ballroom during the event. A plastic yellow
brick road clung to the floor as attendees entered,
transporting them into the magic of the show.
“I think drag is magical in and of itself… There’s a magic that
we conjure as drag performers when we get on stage. Not
all of us are doing ‘Popular’ or ‘The Wizard and I,’ but we’re
still doing wicked magic,” Durfee said.
Durfee performed in the show as his drag persona “Gayle Marriage,” alongside a combination of student and professional
performers. Triangle Club also partnered with Cornish Drag Club to highlight four Cornish performers, a show of unity in light of the
Seattle U-Cornish merger. Durfee wanted to foster a welcoming environment for Cornish students during a time when there are
many uncertainties about how students’ programs are going to proceed.
Another key element of the show is its hosts. Triangle Club invited Kylie Mooncakes and King Jack to emcee and perform this year.
The show represents a full-circle moment for Kylie Mooncakes, who attended one of her first drag shows as an audience member at
Seattle U when she was around 20 years old. As a cohost, she wore pink, and during her set she wore green—lest the audience
forget the theme. For Kylie Mooncakes, drag is more than the outfits and alter egos.
“Drag to me has always represented the yin yang of protest and fight, but also celebration and joy. So I hope while we’re in these
moments together, celebrating each other, celebrating our queer student body… I hope we can remember to revel in this, and then
tomorrow, we get up and continue to stand on ten toes for what we believe in,” Kylie Mooncakes said.
King Jack was invited to emcee after Triangle Club officers learned that they had been asked to step away from their teaching job
after harassment due to their night and weekend performances as a drag king. King Jack took many precautions to keep their life as

a high school English teacher and drag king separate, but they were outed by a cyberbullying campaign. 
Masee Anderson, third-year forensic psychology major and president of Triangle Club, saw this as an opportunity to support a
community member.
“The time we’re living in, I can’t even say it’s unprecedented. We’ve
seen the signs, and we’ve all chosen to not do anything… and the
people that have done something, they need so much more love and
support than we give them. I was unaware of what happened to King
Jack. When we were planning the drag show we saw it on the news
and Collin brought it up, and that’s how we decided, ‘we’re
community, a community sticks together,’” Anderson said.
King Jack performed the first number of the night in rainbow spandex
with a heart cutout, strutting into the crowd to show off their intense
geometric makeup. After the set, they retreated backstage to change
into a glam late-night show host look to emcee, completed by a wig
coiffed with pomade and glitter. It was the first time King Jack
performed in two months, a welcome return after a turbulent time in
their life.
“Going from a very busy life of being a teacher during the day, being a drag king at night, and then all of a sudden, I no longer had
anything. It was really hard. And so how the show went tonight was great… it just felt like getting back on the bike,” King Jack said.
The drag show offered an escape to its audience through bewitching performances, makeup and costumes. The lip sync battle was
another beloved annual tradition, in which audience members volunteered to give their best drag act in front of the crowd. They
had just a few minutes to adorn themselves in props, engineer a persona and practice their act before competing for a tiara and
bragging rights.
The show is as much a celebration as it was a reminder to share in community, whether it be with fellow Seattle U students, Cornish
students, the queer community and the Seattle area. 
“To my queer students, to the students that don’t fit in, the outsiders, the weirdos, like, I’ve been there. It’s hard. But keep going,
there is a spot for you in this world even if it feels like all the light has left. You are that light,” King Jack said.
Drag is an art form currently under attack in states like Texas because, as with other forms of art, there is debate about
appropriateness and what is provocative. The Seattle U drag show demonstrates that drag is not only joyous, but essential in times
when provocation is necessary.

Bittersweet Farewell to the Lee

On the main stage of the Lee Center for the Arts, Chekhov’s
gun is about to go off. This spring, Seattle University’s
Theatre Department will be performing “The Seagull,” a
pioneer in the tragicomedy genre.
Originally written in 1895 by Russian playwright Anton
Chekhov, “The Seagull” explores the connections between
love, loss and the creation of art. The Theatre Department
will be performing Anya Reiss’s 2012 translation,
transporting the story to an ambiguously modern Britain
and bringing the intended relatability of the play to today’s
audiences. 
“It’s very human,” Jarrett Magdaleno, a third-year theatre
major and actor, said. “I think that’s what I love about
Chekhov in general, specifically this show. It’s just very
human for better and worse.”
Magdaleno plays Konstantin Treplev, an aspiring yet unsuccessful
young playwright. Treplev embodies the tortured, starving artist
archetype while avoiding caricature and remaining relatable
through his raw, realistic struggles with mental health.
“This is the first character I’ve played in my life so far to where I
actually had to take a second after an especially emotional scene to
be like, ‘I need like 10 minutes to come down from this,’” Magdaleno
said. “Without spoiling too much, I have this moment towards the
end of the show where there’s a very emotional confrontation
between me and another character, and they leave. I sit on that
stage by myself in silence for a good 30 to 50 seconds. I don’t say
anything, I just spend some time sitting there, thinking about it,
looking around the room, and really just like taking it in. And then I
get up and I go and I leave. I’ve never had that challenge before, this
level of ‘what can you say without saying anything.’ Once it was over, and I had taken some deep breaths, I was like, this is really

satisfying, because it makes me feel as though I’m really alive.” 
The show is ensemble-based, lacking a traditional “leading man.” Each character is fully fleshed out, with authentic relationships
that suggest a world of experiences just offstage. This energy translates into the actors, as the small group size leads to closer
connections within the cast and crew.
“We’ve all been in the rehearsal space together a lot, which is a lot of laughs,” Isa Sale, a fourth-year theatre and interdisciplinary
arts leadership double major, said. “I feel like we got along as a cast, we all built a rapport quite quickly.”
Despite the long rehearsal hours often lasting into the night, Sale finds the time enjoyable and rewarding. “The Seagull” will be her
final show at Seattle U after having been part of nearly every production since the fall of her first year. Her character, Nina
Zarechnaya, serves as a fitting close to this chapter of Sale’s life.
“Nina starts off being pretty unsure of herself, but she dreams of being an actress. She
wants to create, she wants to be known. I can definitely relate to her journey,
especially when I was a teenager. I wanted to be an artist, but I wouldn’t necessarily
have considered myself one at the time,” Sale said.
The theme of finding one’s self is central to the play. For most characters, this comes
with a significant amount of struggle. However, the show balances its numerous tragic
moments with those of joy, connection and humor.
“One of the things that I love about this play and about Chekhov is that it’s tragic and
a lot of the characters aren’t especially happy, but it’s also funny. It’s not necessarily a
comedy, but that’s just what life is like,” Sale said.
The complex tone of “The Seagull” becomes even more poignant when placed in the
context of the Theater Department’s year-long fight to save the Lee Center from
demolition. While the exact timeline of Lee Center’s closure is unclear, “The Seagull”
will likely be one of the final shows performed in this space. This knowledge added a
level of mourning to the process, but Magdaleno and Sale both felt that the shared
loss brought the production team together in a unique and powerful way.
“I think we’re trying to go really big to make sure that it looks beautiful. To, at the very
least, make the school realize what it is that we’ll be missing if they decide to continue
with this horrible decision,” Rhyan Mack, a fourth-year creative writing and theatre major and scenic carpenter working on the
show, said. “Just showing what it is that we can do, what it is that we have been doing, what we will attempt to continue to do until
they take the place from us. I’m so proud of everybody, I’m proud of myself, I’m proud of the work that we’ve done.”
“The Seagull” opens May 16 and will run through May 25 at the Lee Center for the Arts. Tickets can be purchased on the Theatre
Department’s website.

On the age-old vegetarian’s quest to fight malnourishment,
I reached for the gifted bag of red lentils. A humble pantry
item with great potential, I remembered my mom’s recipe
for a deliciously hearty lentil stew. Bright pops of ginger
and sauteed vegetables make this recipe a nutritious staple
for the colder months. This is another super customizable
recipe, so grab your lentils and whatever veg is wasting
away in your fridge.
Tools:
Big Pot and Lid
Stirring Spoon
Cutting Board
Knife
Ingredients:
Onion
Carrot
Ginger
Lentils
Broth / Water
Spices: Cumin, Curry, Salt and Pepper
Fresh Rosemary 
Canned Diced Tomatoes
Recipe: 
Chop and saute half an onion and a few carrots until slightly tender. 
Chop up your rosemary and ginger. Keep the ginger chunky so it comes through in bursts. Add your spices, fresh ginger, and
rosemary (to taste) to your veggies and saute for one minute. This releases the flavor.
Add 2 cups of lentils and saute for another minute before adding 3 cups of broth or water and a can of diced tomatoes. 
Cover and simmer until the lentils are soft, adding more liquid depending on your desired soupiness. 
Voila! Top your lentils with a scoop of Greek yogurt and pair with toasted bread. This is one of the most satisfying, easiest meals of
all time. Seriously, it’s so good. There’s nothing like getting zapped in the taste buds by a chunk of ginger. Makes me feel alive.

Wandering through Capitol Hill often leaves one asking:
what IS that sound? Is it the dulcet drawl of smooth
electronic jazz? Could it be the haunting howls of
experimental noise? The clattering cacophony of four
straight hours of western region bird songs?! Any of these
auditory quandaries will lead one right to Wall of Sound
Records, Capitol Hill’s home for unusual music. 
Wall of Sound was born in Belltown in 1990, when original
co-owners and founders Mark Sullo and Eric Hoffman
opened the store inside of the Art In Form bookstore at
Second and Bell. The store started out as a single wall of
records, which naturally led to the name “Wall of Sound.”
“There’s a lot of other references to the name in music history, in
particular, Phil Spector made the wall of sound approach to his
recording methods that became sort of a famous term, and a lot of
people thought that’s where we took the name, but that actually was
because of the physical limitations of the space within the store,”
Sullo said. 
Since its conception, the store has focused on building an eclectic and
carefully cultivated collection of music from across the globe, making
it a hot spot for Seattle’s music community. When Sullo and Hoffman
sold the company to Jeffrey Taylor and Michael Ohlenroth in 2002,
Taylor had already been curating the Japanese noise section as an
employee. 
To this day, Wall of Sound offers genres ranging from spoken word to Arabic folk noise to space-themed disco to German punk pop
to blues.
“We love music and our customers love music, and it’s fun to turn people on to things that maybe they haven’t heard before. Folks
will come in and they get very excited about the breadth and depth of what we have, even though we’re a very small shop, so people
who are adventurous listeners and adventurous in their music habits really enjoy coming in here, because they’re probably going to
find something that will interest them,” Taylor said. 
Despite its esoteric stock, the store is far from intimidating, due to its small and well organized space. Large windows cast sunlight
across CDs and vinyls neatly arranged by hand-labeled sections, while every wall houses rows of records, staying true to the
business’s namesake. Some albums have notes on them describing the tunes inside.

The store also stocks zines, cassettes, VHS tapes, and posters, and
is known for offering more than fair prices—a rarity in vinyl shops —
with cardboard boxes of records labeled “cheap” and a case of $1
CDs by the entrance. The low price doesn’t indicate a lesser quality
however, as I discovered upon purchasing the $3 1966 compilation
record “Would You Believe that These Mild Mannered Songs of
Yesteryear are Really SUPERCAMP!”
Currently, the only two working in the store are Taylor and
Ohlenroth, known for their palpable passion and willingness to
provide recommendations to customers based on their tastes.
Long-time Seattle residents recall Wall of Sound as a fixture in
Seattle’s music community for the past thirty-five years. The store
has even served as an art gallery and a live music venue. 
Peter Larson, lead field specialist at Seattle University, appreciates the opportunity to discover  music through the timeless art of
finding oneself inexplicably drawn to an intriguing vinyl on the wall.
“I like being physically involved, like flipping the record, listening for when that album ends. I love reading, drinking coffee and
listening to records in the morning. That’s how I want to spend every Saturday and Sunday morning. It’s tangible,” Larson said. 
So let your astute ears lead you to the corner of 12th Avenue and Pike Street in Capitol Hill. Perhaps we can all learn to follow our
rhythmic hearts straight to the best sounds around the Sound.

The use of technology in classrooms has been on the rise
since the early 2000s. However, there is still a push to
reduce the use of electronics in the classroom at the
university level, due to the distractions it may cause.
University professors are changing class policies to evolve
the use of technology. Some professors at Seattle
University have been leaning toward the use of older
conventional means, such as notebooks. 
Wai-Shun Hung, associate professor in the philosophy
department, believes that using technology in his lectures is
more of a distraction than a tool for success in notetaking.
In the past, he’s attempted to implement technology in
lectures; however, he has been met with less student
engagement.
Hung has tried multiple techniques to allow the use of technology in the class outside of certain circumstances, such as disability
services. However, he still had two major concerns. The first was the use of online materials; he found that students engage less with
online materials, unlike physical copies, such as highlighting or writing notes on paper.
The second issue he noticed is that students retain information better using physical copies and notes instead of online material. 
“Based on my experience of exams and papers, they [students] typically perform better when taking notes by hand. I’ve looked up
some research, and I’ve shared those results with students to explain my policy, and it seems that student people can take more
notes with keyboards. Because they type faster than they write, and the result is that they pay less attention. The typing process
seems to require less attention than writing so it affects attention and retention,” Hung said. 
Other professors agree with this reasoning. However, they approach it differently. 
Thomas Mann, a visiting assistant teaching professor in the political science department at Seattle U, allows the use of technology
in his class. He trusts that students who use their devices in lectures use them for educational procedures and that they gently
benefit from it.

Mann believes students should be conscious of their decision to use technology in the classroom. He believes students have to make
judgments for themselves when determining if using technology does help. 
He talked about how students should learn to be more aware of their resources and how they impact their learning. Mann gives
room for his students to make their own decisions and decide what is best for themselves. 
“You are an adult, and much like this is why I don’t really have pop quizzes and things like that. Because I’m like if you don’t do the
reading, fine. But you’re spending a lot of money to be in this classroom,” Mann said.
On top of the conscious use of technology in class, Mann talks about how we can use tech to be better workers; but not to think
critically. Mann has talked about how artificial intelligence has proven to be more detrimental to higher education than beneficial. 
A study Mann shared made by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University shows using artificial intelligence at work lowers workers’
cognitive effort. Workers felt more confident in their ability to use generative AI for tasks that require low critical thinking. He is
against artificial intelligence as he believes that higher education is the place for students to learn and use active thinking.
Liesl Marshall, a fourth-year nursing major, talked about how she agrees with the studies released on how handwriting notes are
better for retaining information. However, she prefers the use of her tablet as it contains OneNote, which is convenient for her
note-taking. 
Marshall would, however, face an issue with some professors who would have strict class policies for electronics.
“I have had one or two professors, particularly UCOR professors, who have been very against technology, like don’t take out your
laptops kind of thing. You have to bring a notebook and take notes with a pen and pencil. Usually, when I approach them like, ‘Hey, is
it ok if I handwrite it on an iPad?’ Sometimes they’re like, ‘Ok, but you have to sit in the front row, and I have to be able to see you
when you’re using it,’” Marshall said. 
Marshall also shared how the use of AI has helped her with her education in a more productive way. She uses AI more as a tool
rather than a replacement for her work. 
“I think people are using AI incorrectly. So, how I use AI personally in my nursing is, I will study the topic. I will take notes, and then
I’ll put my study guide, and all my lectures into the AI, and then I will have it  generate questions, practice exams, and kind of help me
work through it that way. Like, give me case studies and stuff like that which I think is useful,” Marshall said. 
The use of technology in classrooms, whether with note-taking or AI, seems to rely on student etiquette and established personal
norms. These etiquettes depend on the ways the user uses their tools, either benefiting their education or deterring it.
