The Spectator received a letter to the editor in response to our recent article, Trans Students Struggle to Secure Safe Housing. In
this letter, James Willette, associate vice provost and dean of students, and Hilary Lichterman, director of housing and residence life
(HRL), addressed how they felt the original article was unfair in reporting this issue. 
“The reporting in the Spectator is unfortunate because it suggests that the HRL team neither cares about our trans and gender non-
conforming students nor considered their experiences when developing the housing selection process,” the letter stated.
What was most important to them to point out was that the issue the students in the article faced “was due to user error.” They felt
that the original reporting did not do an adequate job of showing that HRL is supportive of students who are trans, non-binary and
gender non-conforming. 
While we always welcome and appreciate responses and different perspectives on our reporting, we do feel that the issues brought
forward by this letter insinuated that we had not discussed points that were addressed in the original article. 
To the first point, it was clearly stated in the article by Assistant Director of Housing Operations and HRL Tyler Murphy that this
issue could have been due to missing the deadline to create housing groups. Murphy also points out that this does not take away
from the stress that the students in the article went through, but it does provide an explanation for their issues. 
While user error is likely a contributing factor to the quoted students’ experiences, the response letter did not acknowledge the
perception of trans students like Maya Stefanovic, who feels that there is still room for growth in terms of supporting students.
“I think for a school that really prides itself on being inclusive, they need to work harder on helping out their trans student body,
because they’re not really doing it well right now,” Stefanovic said.
Housing selection can be stressful, and it is not surprising that busy students may miss a deadline. In the reporter’s interview with
Murphy and Associate Director of Housing Tim Albert, they both were already discussing this as a potential area of improvement
for next year. We find the response letter to rely heavily on blaming students without recognition of ways in which HRL might be
able to make the process easier or more accessible, as was a notion brought forth by members of HRL and quoted in our original
reporting. 
On the note of The Spectator not showing that HRL supports students, we believe this to be an unfounded accusation. The students
themselves may feel frustrated by their experiences with the housing selection process and HRL, but the reporter never suggested
that HRL may be unsupportive of trans individuals. We feel that those interviewed for Spectator articles should be able to share
whatever they feel. Reporters and editors do not edit quotes. 
Students sharing frustrations with a process does not mean that The Spectator is saying that the process is flawed. The article also
shares how Murphy and Albert were willing to be supportive of students who were dissatisfied with the results of housing
selection. 
While HRL’s goal to help trans students navigate their living situations was an area reported on in the original article, the response
letter seems to favor the idea that student error is the sole factor causing issues in the process, with no discussion of how HRL could
grow to better aid trans students in understanding the housing process or offering different options for housing. 
The Spectator hopes to provide everyone on campus a place where they can share their concerns and frustrations. We also hope to
provide a platform to every side of an issue, which we felt was done adequately in this article. There were students who had issues
with the housing process who felt strongly enough about it to want to speak to us. Providing them a place to talk is not equal to The
Spectator condemning HRL. 
We welcome the critique of our articles, especially in cases where individuals do not feel that different perspectives were heard. In
this instance, however, we feel that our original reporting was above adequate in allowing HRL a platform to speak on the issue, and
that the response letter has disregarded this fact and stepped away from accountability in a manner that was not reflected in our
original reporting.

New Pope, New Order

After a secluded and two-day conclave, the Catholic
Church has officially elected a new pope. Cardinal Robert
Francis Prevost, who has taken the name Pope Leo XIV,
became the 267th pontiff and made history as the first
pope of American nationality.
The election followed the death of Pope Francis in late
April, which prompted 133 cardinals to gather in Rome.
Following tradition, the cardinals cast up to four ballots per
day within the Vatican until one nominee receives a two-
thirds majority vote.
Once the traditional white smoke signaled, the message was clear: They have a pope. May 8, he emerged on the balcony of St.
Peter’s Basilica to address the world, giving his remarks to a crowd adorned in papal vestments. In his multilingual address, Pope
Leo paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, and vowed to continue his legacy.
“We must have a Church that works together to build bridges and to keep our arms open—like this very piazza—welcoming,” he told
the crowd.
He also delivered the Urbi et Orbi blessing, which translates to “to the city and to the world,” and made a call for peace. Pope Leo
XIV had previously been brought to the Vatican by Pope Francis, indicating a mutual respect between the two. 
The choice of the name “Leo” is significant. It is a direct reference to Pope Leo XIII, who led the Catholic Church from 1878 until he
died in 1903 and was known for his social justice efforts during the Industrial Revolution. While new popes are not required to
change their names, the tradition has been followed for over 400 years.
Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV holds dual citizenship in the United States and Peru. He served as a bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, and
spent most of his career in South America, where he directed seminaries and held various leadership roles within the Archdiocese. 
The appointment of an American pope is already sparking global conversations among Catholics, theologians, and even on campus
at Seattle University. 
Chancellor and former University President of Seattle U,  Fr. Stephen V. Sundborg, weighed in on the new pope and shared his
reaction when he first heard the news. 
“I was completely surprised, I never thought in my lifetime that I would see an American chosen as the pope,” Sundborg said. 
Sundborg mentioned how Pope Leo’s nature and interpersonal skills make him stand out and that he has a lot to offer the
administration. More importantly, his vows to be a continuation of his predecessor helped him distinguish himself.

With the new pontiff being considerably younger, Sundborg mentioned how he would be able to reach a lot of people with his
influence. His predecessor, Pope Francis was nearly 80 when he took the papacy in 2013.
“He’s a unifier. He’s going to have a broad appeal, he’s going to have a wide appeal. They choose a person they like because of his
personality and his depth. I think that will range to a wide range of people, whether they’re middle-aged, older or younger,”
Sundborg said.
Furthermore, Sundborg discussed Pope Leo’s background, noting how his work with the Augustinian order has equipped him with
the skill set to reach a more diverse and inclusive audience. 
“I think younger people will come to like him, he’s a warm person, he’s a kindly person, he’s the kind of person that grows on people,”
Sundborg said. “He’s more reserved than Francis. Francis was a Jesuit and more out there, that fitted with Jesuit charism, and Leo is
quieter”
Another person who is excited about the new appointment is Assistant Director of Campus Ministry and Assistant Clinical
Professor Brian Taberski. He is eager to see how the social relations between American Catholics and Roman Catholics are
redefined or changed.
“I think it’s exciting. Catholicism has an interesting history in the United States. So often Americans didn’t consider Catholics
American enough, and Catholics in the broader Catholic Church thought Catholics in the broader Catholic Church were too
American,” Taberski said. 
When asked about the implications that the new pope’s nationality may have on Catholic traditions and practices, Taberski alluded
to how the pope’s nationality shadows his global identity.
“In some respect, Leo’s election shows that time has passed, the Italian newspapers said that Pope Leo was the least American-
American in the conclave.”
He continued to talk about how Pope Leo’s international influence is just as important as his American influence. 
“America is a provincial kind of place, people think they’re well-traveled because they went from Seattle to Spokane. Having
someone who lived in Peru, someone who lived in Rome, someone who traveled the world in his responsibilities and is head of the
Augustinian order. Then his overview of the world churches as the dicastery of bishops. Yes, he’s from Chicago but his references
aren’t all Chicago, they are from all over the world.”
Another person who is eager to watch the new administration take flight is Yancy Dominick, a teaching professor of philosophy.
Dominick is eager to see the American Catholic identity be redefined under the papacy. Dominick is anticipating a more inclusive
following and a continuation of welcoming others from different backgrounds. 
“I have often heard that American Catholicism tends to get interpreted through the right/left or the MAGA [Make America Great
Again] stuff now, but that does not speak to the rest of the global church. Most of the world’s Catholics are not American, and global
politics are not American politics. If this new pope can invite American Catholics to recognizing these complexities and diversities
and break out of this right/left tailspin or whatever it is. That would be good,” Dominick said.
When asked if he thinks that the new pope can influence a younger audience, Dominick responded;
“He’s a young pope because he’s only 69 or whatever. It will be interesting a lot of it has to do with what happens at a lower level. I
feel like a pope can only do so much.”
Dominick admitted that at first, he was very surprised and worried about the type of American Catholic that would be representing
the church, but after some research, his concerns were conciliated. 
“His choice of a name was reassuring, his first message talking about peace made me feel better. I was worried about a traditional
Catholic which does not look like that’s what this is.” 
Dominick, similar to Taberski, addressed the massive focus on Pope Leo’s American background.
“It’s been funny to see how Chicago has so confidently claimed him. I’ve seen a lot of memes about how ketchup on a hot dog is now
a sin,” Dominick said. 
Taberski concluded that the new appointment comes at a time when a strong religious influence is not only needed but required for
the greater good of society. 
“An American comes into the papacy at a time where authoritarianism is on the rise and people have concerns about what’s
happening in the United States. I want to be clear that I am not saying Pope Leo is a statement about that, I think it’s about people
seeing something happening in the world who need somebody who can begin to explain it in a way people understand. It’s not a
political statement but it’s a prophetic statement.” 
As Pope Leo continues to settle into his new role in the Vatican, the community at Seattle U watches along with the rest of the
world.

International student enrollment is progressively increasing across the United States. Even with an increase in enrollment, institutions have not yet begun to tap into the capital between international students and engagement as alumni of the institution. This study will examine the influences and barriers for international alumni engagement at a four-year, private, religious institution in the Pacific Northwest and then provide recommended best practices for increased alumni engagement within the field of higher education

 The work of student affairs is often messy, ambiguous, and more often than not, frustrating. This has 
never been made clearer than in the 2019-2020 academic year. Together, as a graduate cohort, the students in 
the Student Development Administration program have confronted the sudden and unexpected departure of 
their Program Director, the budget losses of a school operating under a significant deficit, and above all else, 
the current economic and social nightmare called COVID-19.
 As the Editorial Board for the 14th Edition of MAGIS: A Student Development Journal, we had set out 
to explore the murky territories of higher education through our theme of Faith & Fusion. Little did we suspect 
just how relevant this theme was going to become in our daily lives and self-reflection. 
 In the case for this year’s issue, we understood our theme to represent multiple aspects of the word 
faith: not only that it fuels our personal belief in that the work we are doing is both meaningful and right, but 
also that we embrace unclear processes and hold faith that the outcomes will be favorable to the students that 
we work with. Never has this been more pressing - or personal - for modern higher education than in the 
current circumstances we find ourselves in. In the face of massive furloughs, hiring freezes, and drastic loss of 
endowments, many graduate students hoping to obtain jobs in student affairs are left with little more than faith 
that they will find a role to play in the collapsing economy.
 Fusion complicates this picture even further when considering questions of privilege and marginaliza-
tion. Originally, we understood the increasing diversity on campuses as a fusing of new communities – interna-
tional students, first-generation students coming to campus without familial experience, students of color, and 
increasingly visible representation of the LGBTQ+ population. More importantly, these shifting demographics 
hold important implications for the political, economic, and social realities higher education institutions face 
today. In this issue, you will encounter numerous papers exploring some of these implications through food 
insecure students, proposed regulatory changes to Title IX of the Higher Education Act, and the shifts of gender 
enrollment in higher education. In the face of COVID-19 and the economic destruction it has caused, these 
questions will become even more pertinent.
 Ultimately, while many of these papers were not written with COVID-19 in mind, they offer a glimpse 
at many of the pressing issues we, as student affairs professionals, will need to confront as we continue to 
process the consequences of the pandemic. The need to embrace faith and fusion has been thrown into even 
sharper relief by recent global events. Please consider the 14th edition of MAGIS as an exploration into this 
theme through personal and practical reflection, critical analysis, and creative expression.
