A Guide To Food & Rent
Resources in Seattle

As the school year comes to an end, rising concerns about
the increasing cost of living in Seattle continue to affect
college students in the area. 
Here are some resources to help navigate affordable rental
options in Seattle.
Seattle Housing Authority
The Seattle Housing Authority provides assistance for
renters looking for long-term affordable housing options in
the Seattle area. Throughout the city, the organization
owns and operates 8,777 apartments and single-family
homes. They also own nearly 400 sites throughout the city. 
The Seattle Housing Authority provides low-income
tenants who are eligible with housing vouchers for rental
assistance. Anyone who is over the age of 18 and has lived in the city of Seattle for at least a year can apply. Applicants with an
income of 30% or less than the area median income or homeless for the last 12 months will take precedence. 
More details on the eligibility criteria are online at seattlehousing.org.
Catholic Community Services 
Catholic Housing Services is a subsidiary of Catholic Community Services of Western Washington that partners with local and
federal agencies to provide permanent, transitional and senior housing to Seattle Residents. With 22 shelters, 17 housing facilities
and 52 permanent properties across Western Washington to eligible low-income residents. To apply, potential residents are
encouraged to contact the property managers directly, depending on which property they are inquiring about. 
Compass Housing Alliance 
This organization provides housing to low-income individuals, with 15 properties across the Puget Sound. They provide
accommodations for tenants with disabilities and service animals. Those interested are encouraged to apply on the website by
filling out an interest form, where potential tenants will provide information about their income and preferences. Applications can
be downloaded via their website, compassinghousingalliance.org, and sent to applications@compasshousingalliance.org. 
Plymouth Housing Group
Annabelle DeGuzman-Carino
This organization owns and operates several historic and new construction properties across downtown, central, north Seattle and
Bellevue. The building offers communal spaces such as kitchens and gardens, and some of the properties have on-site medical
offices with medical professionals from Harborview Medical Center and Neighborcare Health. This organization provides housing
to residents who are currently homeless within the Seattle area. Those interested can fill out a risk assessment form through the
Regional Homeless Authority’s Coordinated Entry (CE) system. For additional questions about the housing requirements for this
organization, please email rent@plymouthhousing.org.
Affordable Housing Search Tool
For adults who are not sure what eligibility requirements they may meet, or what properties are in their area. There is the low-
income housing tool at AptFinder.org. This resource helps candidates for affordable housing narrow their search by looking at
listings based on their location, rent affordability and the program type.
Additional information on housing options in King County is located at seattle.gov. 
Next, here are some resources to help navigate options for accessible and affordable food in Seattle.
Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) 
If you’re a resident of Washington state, meet the low-income requirements and meet the immigration requirements, you are
eligible to apply for the food assistance program. To apply, you can go online or call (877)-501-2233, or make an appointment at
your local DSHS office. After scheduling an interview, you can meet with a representative to determine your eligibility for
assistance. Eligibility is determined based on several factors, including income, deductions and family size. College students who
work on average 20 hours a week, are eligible for work study, and who take care of dependents are all encouraged to apply.
Byrd Barr Place
An advocacy organization that provides a plethora of services, but also owns and operates a food bank called the Market within the
Central District. The market provides fresh produce, meat, dairy, products, bread, nonperishables and non-grocery essentials. The
Market is open Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays 12-4 p.m. and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Since the federal
government provides some products, visitors are asked to bring proof of residency within the Seattle area; that proof can be a
photo identification, a utility or medical bill or printed documents that verify someone’s address.  
The Market is located at 722 18th Ave. For people without access to transportation, the Byrd Barr Place offers delivery to those
who live within the 98102, 98112 or 98122 zip codes. Contact (206)-812-4940 to schedule a weekly home delivery.

Pike Market Food Bank
Pike Market Senior Center and Food Bank provide free groceries and ready-to-eat food to people of all ages. The market is located
in the Pike Market parking garage on the fifth level. The hours of operation are Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday from 3
p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. They also offer an express bag hour on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. There is a
limit that clients may come to the food bank once per week, and the organization asked that people not arrive early and crowd the
waiting area. For people without housing or experiencing a crisis, those clients may come in once a day for nonperishable foods.
During hours of operation, staff are available to connect visitors with interpreters in the following languages: Cantonese,
Vietnamese and Mandarin. 
The Food Bank also provides a home delivery service to eligible residents in downtown Seattle. For more information about this

On April 7, 2023, ProPublica posted an article reporting on undisclosed “donations” or “gifts” that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas received from billionaire and Republican political donor Harlan Crow, including thousands of dollars in tuition payments for his grandnephew and luxurious travel for himself (Marcus). In accepting these, Thomas has gained clear financial benefits from his seat on the court while also bringing scrutiny upon the Supreme Court’s code of conduct (Wagner and Barnes). How Do Professors Deal with AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) used to be a fantasy that was seen
only in sci-fi movies, but recent innovations have made it a
staple in nearly all of our lives. There are few places where
it is more prevalent than in schools, as the word-processing
and information-gathering abilities of programs such as
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are incredibly
well-suited to tackle university assignments.
However, the ability to have a large language model
complete assignments and help students study raises
practical and ethical concerns. Is work produced by
ChatGPT considered plagiarism? Does instant retrieval of
information stop students from learning as effectively? On
the other hand, can it be used to study more effectively,
generate ideas or provide students with insight?
The answers to these questions are anything but clear. AI is being widely adopted and used by students and rapidly evolving in
academic spaces, with new uses and advancements coming out on a seemingly daily basis. With its use becoming so ubiquitous in
such a short amount of time, professors and administrators alike are grappling with ways to control the newfound technology and
find ways for it to help instead of harm the classroom experience.
Onur Bakiner, associate professor of political science and director of the technology and ethics initiative, emphasized that the best
approach to controlling AI is through a combination of schoolwide policy and independent decisions by professors.
“Every discipline and every instructor will legitimately develop specific policies around AI use in teaching and research, so the
institution’s job is to establish general guidelines to overcome uncertainty,” Bakiner wrote in an email to The Spectator.
How professors act largely depends on their personal perspectives on AI. Some professors see AI as wholly detrimental to students
and an acute threat to both academic integrity and the learning process.
Others, such as Professor of Communication and Media Christopher Paul, believe that AI is just another step in the advancement of
technology that students will have to get acclimated to.
As far as dismissing concerns, Paul says that cheating due to AI isn’t very different from the cheating that students have been doing
for years in other ways. Students of the past have paid graduate students and peers to write their papers for them, and used other
students’ reading notes instead of doing the reading, which isn’t too different from ways that AI can be used to cheat.
Paul also emphasized positive uses of AI, like minimizing the number of students who come to class completely unprepared to
discuss the readings, among other things.

“Students don’t always do all the readings for a class, and that makes my classes run worse… if AI can help us get through some of
those things, I think that that’s going to be something that is useful for them, both in my class and in life in general,” Paul said.
Not all teachers are as optimistic as Paul, though. Thomas Mann, a visiting assistant teaching professor of political science, is a
strong opponent of AI and believes that it should be eliminated entirely in the classroom, and has adjusted his curriculum to
accomplish that.
“In my classroom, I have moved to handwritten exams, handwritten midterms and handwritten finals. That’s the only way I can think
to have no AI at all,” Mann said, later adding, “The university should go back to the medieval ages. That they should just have an anti-
technology, anti-AI policy across the board.”
He believes that students cannot resist the allure of having their assignments done for them, and attests to the fact that he has seen
the quality of student performance degrade in recent years as generative AI has become more prevalent. However, he holds
sympathy for students.
“AI is one more thing added to this already toxic sludge of lack of attention and social media… it’s like it’s just a degradation of what
human beings are capable of. It’s really unfair to your generation, because it’s like, you guys aren’t responsible for this. It’s a system
that you’ve been thrown into,” Mann said.
Between Paul’s hopeful outlook and Mann’s cynicism, though, exists a wide range of reactions to AI’s use in the classroom. 
Many professors, such as Adjunct Professor of Communication and Media Tyrah Majors, fall in between the two extremes and will
simply continue to teach as they did while acknowledging the need to regulate the potential risks of AI.
“I would say it’s forced me as a professor to regulate more how students are using it. But, at the end of the day, students are going to
use what they have access to,” Majors said.
Part of being a professor means being willing to adapt and change to give your students the best possible education, and the advent
of AI is no exception. While we wait for time and experience to tell us if AI is a benefit or harm to students, professors will regulate it
as they see fit, finding the solutions that they feel best allow them and their students to succeed.

Nephrolithiasis and Ureteroscopy: A Case Study

Nephrolithiasis is a renal condition that affects roughly 1 in 10 people in the United States 
yearly. Obstructive renal calculi can lead to hydronephrosis which can cause serious 
health problems. Ultrasound is vital in detecting and treating stone formation. This case 
study presents a patient with bilateral nephrolithiasis that underwent left kidney 
ureteroscopy lithotripsy (URSL). After the procedure there is still evidence of renal calculi. 
We then compare three different types of lithotripsies, URSL, shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) 
and burst wave lithotripsy (BWL), to understand which may be more effective at treating 
nephrolithiasis. These lithotripsies have benefits and limitations where one may be better 
used depending on patient health condition, size, and location of stone. Understanding the 
patient’s health risks is important to properly determine which lithotripsy is safest and 
more effective. The future of ultrasound guided lithotripsy is promising.

Nephrolithiasis is a condition in which 
stones are formed in the kidneys. The 
prevalence rate in the United States is at 
11%.1 Typically, these stones are made of 
calcium oxalate. Lithotripsy is not 
commonly performed on renal calculus 
that are less than or equal to 4 mm, 
however if larger they can be obstructive 
and cause hydronephrosis.2 
Hydronephrosis is a condition where 
there is a buildup of urine in the kidneys 
and can occur unilaterally or bilaterally. If 
the kidney affected by hydronephrosis is 
left untreated this can cause serious 
kidney damage that can lead to kidney  
 
failure. Lithotripsy is a medical procedure 
that can be combined with ultrasound to 
treat patients with nephrolithiasis by 
breaking down stones into smaller 
fragments.2  
The case study presented is of an 
asymptomatic 77-year-old woman that 
has a history of chronic kidney disease 
and bilateral nephrolithiasis. The patient 
had a URSL on left kidney one month prior 
to coming into the hospital. URSL was 
performed to treat a non-obstructive 13 
mm kidney stone previously seen on 
computer tomography (CT). 
Case report 
The patient was an inpatient at a 697-bed 
hospital. She had a CT 2 days before 
being sent for ultrasound that showed 
hydronephrosis of the left kidney. The 
ultrasound protocol performed was a 
complete renal ultrasound where we 
evaluated both kidneys and bladder. The 
right kidney contained a kidney stone 
measuring approximately 12 mm (see 
Figure 1). The left kidney contained 
multiple kidney stones measuring 
approximately 8 mm – 13 mm (see Figure 
2). In comparison, CT scan from days 
prior showed hydronephrosis of left 
kidney along with bilateral kidney stones 
(see Figure 3). The patient was scheduled 
for bilateral URSL to treat nephrolithiasis. 
The patient had a URSL performed on left 
kidney one month prior to the ultrasound 
to treat multiple non-obstructive renal 
calculi that was previously seen on CT 
measuring up to 13 mm. With ultrasound 
we can see that those renal calculi are 
still present on the left kidney. Stone free 
rates (SFR), defined as renal stones less 
than 5 mm, for URSL is better than SWL at 
93% however we did not see any changes 
with our patient.2

Discussion  
SWL is one of the common medical 
procedures used for removing stones in 
the urinary system due to being the only 
non-invasive approach.3 SWL involves 
ultrasound guidance by sending high peak 
shock waves at slower rates to the area of 
interest. These shock waves are meant to 
cause fragmentation and allow for safe 
passage of the smaller stones out of the 
urinary system. It’s important that 
patients remain still so anesthesia is 
required for this type of treatment. A 
benefit is that this type of lithotripsy is 
that it is usually an outpatient procedure 
and patients tend to have a fast recovery 
time. There are risks and limitations to 
SWL such as risks of tissue damage due 
to cavitation and direct stress from the 
high peak shock waves. Essentially the 
shock waves produce bubbles that 
quickly expand and collapse that then 
cause tension to the surrounding area, in 
this case the renal calculi.4 However, this 
force radiates outward and that is where 
the risk of tissue damage can occur. Due 
to this risk the American Urological 
Association guidelines recommend that 
patients undergoing anticoagulation 
therapy be ineligible for SWL. OB patients 
needed treatment for nephrolithiasis are 
also not eligible for this procedure as 
research shows that SWL may cause birth 
complications.5 If there is a stone in the 
lower renal calyx then SWL may not be as 
beneficial at removing as studies show 
the larger the stone in that area the less 
likely of successful removal post SWL and 
another approach would be more 
beneficial.5  
BWL is a newer type of lithotripsy 
that is still very much being researched to 
treat nephrolithiasis. BWL, like SWL, is a 
non-invasive approach that uses 
ultrasound waves in bursts to target and 
break down renal calculi. The difference 
is in the number of waves, strength of the 
waves, and the time intervals. In SWL a 
single high peak wave is produced, 
whereas in BWL the opposite occurs in 
that lower peak waves are produced in 
faster time intervals.6 With lower 
pressure, the bubbles created that are 
used to help fragment the stones are 
minimized therefore a benefit is reducing 
the risk of tissue damage.6 Patients taking 
anticoagulants may now be eligible for a 
noninvasive treatment in the near future 
as a recent animal study that included the 
animals undergoing anticoagulant 
therapy had no hemorrhage with BWL.7 
Furthermore, while tissue damage is very 
low it can be avoided by monitoring the 
echogenicity of the kidney during BWL.6 
This type of lithotripsy has the potential to 
open possibilities for patients that could 
not otherwise get a noninvasive and safe 
approach in treating their renal calculi. 
URSL is a minimal invasive 
approach that involves inserting a 
ureteroscope through the urethra and up 
through the urinary system. The end of 
the ureteroscope contains a camera and 
a laser that is used to break down the 
renal calculi. Patients are given 
anesthesia, and the procedure can take 
anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. 
SWL has shown to be more effective in 
terms of SFR than SWL.8 However, due to 
the nature of using thermal energy to 
break down renal stones there are risks 
such as thermal injury.2 Inserting wires 
through the urinary system may also raise 
the risk for tissue damage that can cause 
internal bleeding.2  
While URSL has a better SFR than 
SWL, there are other variables that need 
to be considered when deciding which to 
use for patients. These variables post 
procedure can include hospital stay, pain, 
mental health, and physical function. 
SWL, when looking at overall factors, was 
the better modality for patients.8 Patient’s 
current average risk of sepsis for URSL is 
5%, but that increases with patient’s age, 
other chronic conditions, and time under 
procedure.9  
Conclusion 
It is crucial to remove large 
nephrolithiasis, however it’s just as vital 
to choose the right lithotripsy to minimize 
risks and repeat procedures. Therefore, it 
is important to consider all the variables 
when deciding which modality to choose 
from. Age, size of patient, health 
condition, location, and size of stone are 
vital when deciding on the best lithotripsy 
to use. While the focus for this study was 
on two of the more common lithotripsies, 
where we can see benefits to choosing 
one over the other, there is a newer type 
that may change the approach. With 
future studies BWL with ultrasound 
guidance may become the better choice 
for patients to reduce the burden of 
reinterventions, safety, and efficiency.

More Than Just Chocolate: The
Heart Behind Hot Cakes

Soft, vibrant laughter, warm lighting, heady wafts of
chocolate in the air, a scene of welcome for everyone. 
Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery is a love letter to the
Puget Sound and her community of Seattleites. From a
stand at the Farmers Market to locations in Capitol Hill,
Ballard and SoDo, Hot Cakes is making its mark on the
Washington community and food scene. 
Even after coming under new ownership in 2020 and
working to regain momentum post-COVID, the business is
a thriving scene of sweets and laughter. 
Their brand motto, “be honest stay true” drives both
directors and employees in how they cultivate the
experience and atmosphere. 
For both Forest and Alexis Newsom, who work at the Capitol Hill
location, the brand motto makes their working experience highly
enjoyable. 
“I would say the team is really great. We try to fit together really
cohesive teams, people like that like to have a lot of fun, but also
have attention to detail, focus and motive. It’s one of the best
things,” Forest shared. 
Newsom also echoed that the team is her favorite part. 
“It’s one of those really rare experiences in food service where you
just get to genuinely feel valued and respected by everyone there,”
Newsom said.
She also shared the employees’ involvement beyond day-to-day tasks. 
“We can help make drinks and different menu items if we bring suggestions to higher management on things we’d like to see,”
Newsom said. “They’re usually pretty accommodating and are like, ‘Oh, yeah, that sounds great.’ And so we have a couple of menu
items that either Forest has created or someone else on staff has, so that’s pretty cool too.”

Currently on the menu for their shake of the month, Newsom created a strawberry matcha milkshake, which is the perfect blend of
fresh sweetness and creamy subtlety. 
Austin Crider, director of operations, talked about how the Washington experience is at the heart of Hot Cakes. 
“Being a northwest company, you know, having a presence with the great outdoors [is important]. We have a whole product line—
not necessarily anymore—but we’ve had a wilderness collection in the past,” Crider said. “We still have some desserts that kind of
tie into that, our smoked chocolate chips are supposed to mimic, you know, growing up camping and fishing, the smell of the
outdoors and doing s’mores.” 
Beyond creating a warm environment, Hot Cakes has been an avid part of the community, which just lends to their authentic nature.
During the pandemic, under the previous ownership, the business had a campaign where they delivered 1,000 cookies a day to
nurses.
One of their biggest partnerships is with Washington Wild, an
organization that works on preserving wild lands in Washington. 
“The state of Washington and the outdoors—basically our wild and
farmland has been really at the core of hot cakes and our belief
system. Washington Wild advocates for the preservation of wild or
wild places, and so we really kept that at the heart of everything we
do,” Crider said.
During Earth Week, they will typically partner up with Washington
Wild to highlight their work. For the past three years, they have had a
molten cake called the Salted Caramel Molten Cake, which ties into
themes of salmon population, the Puget Sound and local water
waves. 
Since 2021, Hot Cakes has also partnered with Dog Gone Seattle, a
dog adoption center in Seattle. 
“We might do adoption events with them once or twice a year. In the past, it’s been out of our Ballard location. We have our outdoor
pergola and will typically do it on a Sunday, with the farmers market going on and there’s foot traffic,” Crider said.
Hot Cakes is as committed to its community as it is to its craft for sweets; in fact, both seem to go hand-in-hand. Their approach to
giving back shows that restaurants can play a leadership role in nurturing the community just as well as feeding people good food. 
For Zainab Khan, currently a student at Bellevue College applying for Seattle U’s Nursing Program (hint hint cough cough
@sunursing), Hot Cakes has consistently been a late-night sweet treat.. 
“90% of the time when we come here, like, on birthdays, it’s literally because it’s the only place that’s open. I think because it’s open
so late, that’s why a lot of people end up here,” Khan said. “So you come here at like 10, 11 p.m., and it’s the busiest that you’ll find it
because everyone is here for dessert, a little sweet treat after 10 p.m. I think that’s what makes the atmosphere so inviting and
enticing.” 
Hot Cakes has proven itself to be not just a high-quality dessert business but also an outstanding pillar of the Seattle community.
Their dedication to staying true to their values of honesty makes them a business that locals can trust because they genuinely invest
in the people and community they serve.

SUFF Brings Students to the
Silver Screen

What do burger deals, women falling in and out of love,
gambling addicts and ninjas have in common? All were the
subjects of films debuting at the 12th annual Seattle
University Film Festival (SUFF). Hosted by the Seattle U
Filmmakers Club and Media Production Center, the festival
screens short films created within the last year that were
written or directed by Seattle U students. Students and
supporters filled the dimly lit Pigott auditorium in
anticipation of themselves or their friends on the big
screen.
A total of 22 films were shown, lasting slightly over an hour.
Students had full creative control over their projects,
leading to a wide variety of tones and plotlines. Silent,
abstract horror films like “Guilt” by Hector Montes and Alec
Douglass were shown alongside satirical comedies like Aman Meshesha, Navy Williams and Lisa Michelle Lewis’ “Wokeness
Destroys Hollywood!” Viewers were on the edges of their seats, laughing, gasping and applauding each film.
After all the submitted films were shown, a number of awards were given out for various categories of film. Winning films were
selected by a panel of judges before the screening occurred.
Best Group Production was awarded to “From Students Everywhere”
by Rachel Shimabukuro and Gracie Cole, telling a heartbreakingly
realistic portrayal of student mental health. Best Documentary was
awarded to “SAE, the Artist” by Jenny Ho, following local rapper SAE
as he prepared to release his debut album. Best Film by a Non-Film
Major was awarded to “A Photographer’s Film” by Aidan Sales,
depicting the solitary, complex process of photo development. 
The clear crowd favorite of the night was “Tahina Made a Comedy
Film,” written and directed by Fourth-Year Film Major Tahina
Tomaszek. Starting with a group of friends having a simple
conversation, the story quickly evolves into an epic tale of stolen
lightsabers, dance parties and fake Coachella trips. The film is fast-
paced and full of twists, with each joke landing perfectly.
“I wrote that script in about 15 minutes. It was such a weird day, I had pulled an all-nighter and I had so much work to do. In the

midst of that, I decided to write that film,” Tomaszek said. “I reached out to my crew and my friends, and I was like, ‘Hey, do you guys
want to help me make something really silly?’ And they immediately were like, ‘Absolutely.’ I cannot thank them enough because
truly, without their help and them being a part of this film, this would not have been made.”
“Tahina Made a Comedy Film” took home a total of four awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Comedy, Audience’s Choice
and third place for Best Picture. Though Tomaszek serves as President of the Filmmakers Club, this success came as a complete
surprise to her.
“My officers were like, ‘yeah, none of us can see the results until the festival.’ Little did I know it was just me not being allowed to see
it,” Tomaszek said. “I had no idea people were going to love it so much. I’m really, really happy that so many people loved it and
enjoyed it, and it makes me just feel so good about being a filmmaker.”
Second place for Best Picture was awarded to Victor Ho’s “John Vic.” The action-packed adventure was, as the name suggests,
heavily inspired by the “John Wick” franchise. The film’s expertly choreographed fight scenes and intense soundtrack clearly
demonstrated Ho’s creativity and technical skill in filmmaking.
Taking home both first place for Best Picture and Best Solo Production was “Turning Back Turning Back” by Cole. By far the most
abstract film of the night, the black-and-white piece combines scenes from 1936’s “Modern Times” starring Charlie Chaplin with
recordings of Cole’s childhood. Though the film is short and silent, it leaves the viewer with a bittersweet feeling and a chance to
reflect on the passage of time.
“I’m a nerd about Charlie Chaplin, so I just wanted to use something I was
interested in and make something I thought would be somewhat interesting to
watch,” Cole said. “[Winning] feels crazy because this is my first year submitting to
the festival. It feels amazing. I’m so proud of everyone else and all the projects I
worked on, and just everyone that has been helping me this year.”
For Fourth-year Film Major Raymond Carr, SUFF serves as a satisfying ending to
his time as a filmmaker at Seattle U. Carr has participated in the festival since his
second year and has served as the social media manager for the Filmmakers Club
for two years.
“It’s very full circle, it feels like a culminating event. I just think it’s really cool to
submit stuff and get awards, and it feels very fancy. Like, I’m not just doing
assignments, I’m also having this fun night.”
After the screening, filmmakers and viewers mingled outside the auditorium,
enjoying snacks and celebrating each other’s success. The success of this year’s
festival left viewers eagerly awaiting their chance to submit to next year’s SUFF.
This year’s selection of films will be available to watch on the Seattle U
Filmmakers Club’s YouTube channel.

As the 2023-24 academic year drew to a close, there was a
breakup on the Seattle University campus. The soon-to-be-
decoupled couple decided to call it quits after 13 years
together. That couple? Seattle U and the Western Athletic
Conference.
After 13 years of bliss, it’s time for both parties to hand
over vestiges of the other’s stuff. It’s time to contemplate
whether or not to continue following one another on
Instagram. Perhaps there will be a brief, ill-fated
reconciliation attempt that just causes more pain (think
pre-conference rematches with old flames, Grand Canyon
University or Utah Valley).
Times have changed, and a sun-tanned, beach-blond lover
called the West Coast Conference (WCC) has stolen
Seattle U’s heart. With that context, it’s only right that we take one last look at our ex.
Seattle U’s time in the conference came to a close in Arlington, Texas. Two different teams gathered down south for one last crack at
the WAC. Baseball dropped their last game to UT Arlington at the Clay Gould Ballpark, falling short of the conference tournament.
Less than a mile away, runners from Seattle U set a school record in the WAC Championships 4x400m relay to cap off their season.
But the baton has been passed, the final out recorded. It’s fitting that this partnership ended under the Texas sun—it’s one of the
first things that Alex Jensen, a fifth-year on the track team, thinks about when he thinks WAC.
“Every time we go to Texas for our WAC track championships, there seems to be, like, a weather storm that delays the whole meet
by like two hours or cancels our flights. So, just enjoying that because you get to spend more time with your team in the bus or, like,
the airport. So yeah, the thunderstorms are what’s known in the WAC,” Jensen said.
Jensen’s positive perspective on logistical challenges was echoed by other athletes. Jensen co-hosted the Rudy’s, a student athlete
award show, with Jade Quintana May 29. Quintana, a fourth-year kinesiology major and player on the women’s tennis team, had
similar aspects of the WAC on her mind that night.
“I think of some tough teams, some hot weather in Texas, and I think of the WAC finals my freshman year. That was an epic
tournament and one of my favorite memories from back in general,” Quintana said.
Epic indeed—Quintana excitedly recounted how Seattle U defeated the number one seed in the 2022 tournament and made it to
the finals, the furthest the school has ever advanced. That run looms large in the program’s memory and serves as an example of the

tight competition Redhawks have enjoyed against WAC opponents.
Jensen emphasized “progressive excellence,” his term that describes how the WAC has grown over the years as a conference.
“Since my freshman year, it’s been getting better and better and better. To have the competition keep rising, it brings out the best in
you. So I’ve been pretty lucky to be in the WAC,” Jensen said. “But I’m pretty excited to be in the, well, I’m pretty excited for
everyone else to be in the WCC.”
Kait Raffensperger, a fourth-year cell and molecular biology major, played as a center back on the school’s women’s soccer team.
Raffensperger was named WAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year after a deep 2023 playoff run by the Redhawks and won Eddie
O’Brien Student Athlete of the Year at the Rudys.
“I think we’ve developed some really fun rivalries over the years. Definitely playing against Utah Valley and [Grand Canyon
University] for women’s soccer has been a lot of fun over the years,” Raffensperger said.
The loss of those rivalries will be felt, even if leaving the WAC means avoiding some of its more challenging aspects.
“Being Seattle U, we are the farthest team from every other school, and it was difficult sometimes having to travel so far. And
sometimes it was really long days, but I think it meant showing up every day, no matter how tired you were, no matter how difficult
it was. We really showed up together as a team, and I think every team at this school deals with those same challenges,”
Raffensperger said.
Seattle U joined the WAC in the 2012-13 academic year. This came after a few years of non-conference Division 1 competition
under then-president Fr. Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J.’s assertion that Seattle U would move to D1 with or without a conference. The
WAC gave Seattle U a path to NCAA tournaments, strong rivals and a place for countless Seattle U athletes to be recognized for
their talents with conference awards.
If you were studying into the evening May 29 in Pigott, you might have been disrupted by a flood of student athletes, dressed to the
nines, enjoying the end of another successful year of competition.
The Spectator archives on the library’s website show a window into a similar moment in the school’s history. A May 23, 2007 article
by Staff Writer Rose Egge describes “a buzz of approval” at a basketball banquet over the announcement of a return to Division 1.
That same sort of buzz was present in the Pigott’s PACCAR Atrium, but this time around, over a new era of Division 1 competition.

During his first day in office, President Donald Trump
issued numerous presidential actions, including signing 26
executive orders, 12 memorandums, and four
proclamations. Some of these executive orders include
pulling the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement,
declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border
and withdrawing from the World Health Organization,
citing its failure to handle the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among the 12 memorandums was one ending remote work
for federal employees and another directing the
Department of Economic Policy to implement an
“emergency price relief” plan to lower the cost of living for
Americans, although no details of the plan were outlined. 
Among Trump’s many inaugural proclamations, one of the most notable was the pardoning and commutation of over 1,500
sentences for offenses related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Insurrection.
Second-year Law Student Shayla Kline believes the pardoning adds to the divide among Americans, compounding other issues.
Kline explained how, as a law student, this pardoning has a lasting effect on the criminal justice system in the U.S.
“I think it undermines how people view the criminal justice system. What incentives are we giving people to follow the law if their
political party can simply pardon them when they do something as egregious as [participate] in an insurrection?” Kline said. 
The decision left Kline baffled.
“I could have understood pardoning those who were peacefully protesting outside the Capitol and didn’t go inside to vandalize and

attack. That could have bridged the gap. Politics-wise, I think it’s fair that we do have a right to protest, but it is peaceful protest—it’s
not storming the Capitol and attacking people who were just trying to do their jobs,” Kline said. 
Patrick Schoettmer, an associate teaching professor of political science at Seattle University, explained the pardon power in detail. 
“Pardons are used for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes they’re used for the frames they were intended to, which was
addressing miscarriages of justice. Sometimes mass pardons fall into that category. Under the Obama administration, he did a lot of
pardons for people who were convicted under marijuana charges,” Schoettmer said. 
Schoettmer elaborated on the broader implications and potential flaws of pardon power under a second Trump presidency.
“The pardon power is a very powerful use of executive authority, and there are not many checks on it. The real question is, in theory,
whether a president can pardon themselves. Based on common law, one cannot be a judge in their own case. But since no president
has tried it before, it’s never been tested. If a president tried it, the prosecutor would be inclined to petition the Supreme Court,”
Schoettmer said. 
Following his swearing-in ceremony and the inaugural lunch, Trump signed the first of 26 day-one executive orders.
Around 10 orders were centered around immigration policy, part of the platform Trump’s election campaign ran on. Several laws
specifically focused on border security. Trump declared illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border a national emergency and
reinstated his “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until their court date. The policy was
reimplemented without Mexico’s agreement, which could affect its implementation.
Other immigration-focused orders were signed to restrict citizenship and increase deportations. One of the most scrutinized
immigration orders Trump signed on day one was a policy to restrict birthright citizenship. The order states that citizenship will not
automatically be given to children born in the U.S. whose mother was “unlawfully present” or “lawful but temporary” in the U.S. at
the time of birth, and whose father was not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Only children born 30 days after the policy is
enforced will be affected by the legislation.
Second-year Communication and Media Major Olivia Rankin believes the order will have a massive impact on families across the
country.
“Families would be torn apart,” she said. “The income for those families [would be impacted], it’s really terrifying coming from an
immigrant family.”
If it clears a mountain of legal challenges, as more than 20 states are currently suing the Trump administration for the policy, the
order would re-interpret the 14th Amendment, which currently guarantees birthright citizenship 
Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Political Science Thomas Mann believes that the order, along with Trump’s other new
policies, have a clear path to move forward.
“The most one can hope for at the time is for states that are already going to sue to delay or stall [the order], but I wouldn’t hope for
too much if it reaches the Supreme Court in the next four years,” Mann stated.
Another key order he signed pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement, the 2015 accord in which countries pledged to cut
greenhouse gas emissions to limit the effects of climate change. This is the second time Trump withdrew the U.S. from the
agreement, making the country one of the few nations in the world not tied to the pact. The withdrawal process from the
agreement will take a year.
According to Seattle U’s Director of Environmental Studies Tanya Hayes, this order signals a shift away from renewable energy
production and environmental protections.
“At the federal level… we’re not going to have as much funding for environmental protections and specifically toward climate
mitigation and adaptation,” Hayes said. “Trump’s hope is to turn away from more wind and solar and go back to gas and drilling. I
think there will be a slight push for that, I think we’ll see a lot of lawsuits come out [against drilling] that will stall the process for a
long time.”
The Future of Trump’s America
While withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement likely indicates cuts in federal environmental spending, the same may not be
true at the state and local levels. Washington state remains a leader in climate policy in the U.S. and is expected to retain key
programs such as the Climate Commitment Act.
“I think it’s important to start paying more attention to what states are doing. There’s the Governor’s Climate Alliance … and they’re
bipartisan so they can have more pull in that as well,” Hayes said.
One executive order that sparked discussion among many Seattle U students involved pausing the TikTok ban that went into effect
just before Trump’s inauguration. The order called on the U.S. attorney general to not enforce the ban until early April. The ban
could be eliminated entirely should TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, decide to sell the app to an American company before the
deadline. Trump has said that he is open to Elon Musk buying the app.
Despite the uncertainty of the app’s feature following April, TikTok was quick to credit Trump for halting the ban.
“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes
office,” a message to TikTok users read, a day before Trump’s inauguration. 
TikTok’s praise of Trump is part of a broader trend toward political involvement that many social media companies have followed
over the past few years, including X and Meta.
Students like Second-year Mechanical Engineering Major Oliver Baldwin have noticed this trend.
“With Meta and TikTok pandering to Trump, I can only imagine other social media will pander around Trump,” Baldwin said.

As Trump’s promise of change in the U.S. becomes reality, many students are feeling a sense of uncertainty for the future. 
“I’m feeling kind of weird, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Baldwin said. “Maybe in a month I’ll be more aware of what’s going
to happen in the next four years, but now it’s kind of uncertain.”
Political uncertainty combined with dwindling political opposition is set to help push Trump’s agenda forward. Mann thinks Trump
has all the pieces he needs to implement the policies he wants.
“Not only is the Trump team much more organized this time… institutionally there doesn’t seem to be any kind of blocks,” Mann said.
“They have all the branches of government, they have a party that is totally loyal to the executive, possibly more importantly, they
have the backing of the richest people in the world.”
Trump has shown in his first few days an aggressive and urgent push to restructure many existing policies of the American
government. The extent of Trump’s actions will continue to place many citizens in vulnerable positions and will further regress
decades of social progress in favor of a chosen elite.
