A Personal Reflection on the NASPA
Western Regional Conference
I joined Seattle University’s Student
Development Administration program at the
last minute. It wouldn’t have been possible
if not for the pandemic. I work in SU’s
Admissions Office, outside the traditional
scope of student affairs. My fall is usually
filled with recruitment trips to high schools
around the world. When I found out that
wouldn’t be the case in 2020, I jumped at
the opportunity to challenge myself and
pursue an advanced degree.
I submitted my application days
before the deadline and was accepted shortly
afterwards. I was excited and nervous to
continue my higher education journey in the
SDA community. I wasn’t sure how I would
fit into the program. I thought the other
students around me would be student affairs
professionals with a clear purpose for
attending this program. Meanwhile, I was
just an admissions counselor still figuring
out my “why.”
During my first year of classes, I
enjoyed getting to know my peers and
professors, even if we only saw each other
online. The sense of community in the
program shined through my computer
screen. The first few quarters rushed by: I
attended class, did the work, and earned
good grades. But, I hadn’t found my place. I
was still struggling to connect my identities,
career, and the SDA experience into a
coherent perspective on student affairs work.
I knew my graduate experience
would be different from other students’. My
undergraduate studies had been the same
way. I am a textbook “non-traditional”
student: older, first-generation, transfer,
commuter, and international. Now that I was
signed up to be part of a cohort-based
program while working full time, I knew
this sense of being different would come
back. The internship component of the
program, for one thing, would be difficult
for me to complete because of my full-time
workl. I was too hung up on this idea that
other students in the program shared an
experience I couldn’t have due to my work

in the admissions office. I thought of career
as a deficit rather than an asset.
In the fall of 2021, Dr. Erica
Yamamura invited me to present on a panel
at NASPA’s Western Regional Conference in
San Francisco. The panel was a reflection on
the transition to graduate school during a
pandemic. Being able to participate not only
provided an incredible professional
development opportunity but also an
opportunity to make sense of my own
experience. I had never intentionally taken
the space to reflect on my time in the
program, or dream about the things I hoped
to gain from it. This invitation was my
chance to do so. I would also be able to see
classmates I had only met online. And it
didn’t hurt that this allowed me to swap the
Seattle gloom for a few days in beautiful and
sunny San Francisco.
When preparing for the panel
discussion, we agreed on a few questions
beforehand, such as “How did the pandemic
influence one expectation of graduate
school?” and “What did you learn about
yourself during the pandemic?” I spent some
time thinking about them, writing notes, and
underlining key points I wanted to address.
However, during our final walkthrough in
San Francisco, Dr. Yamamura encouraged
all panelists to really hone in on our personal
perspectives and the identities we bring to
the program. Suddenly, I was confronting
my fears, doubts, and hopes as a graduate
student, student affairs practitioner, and
admissions counselor. This allowed me to
truly reflect on my experience and not just
answer the questions based on what might
sound good.
Presenting on that panel turned into a
profound learning experience for me. Dr.
Paige Gardner and Dr. Yamamura—along
with my co-panelists Jermaine Lark
Rocacorba and Alexis Bull, and all the other
SDA students I encountered at the
conference— fostered a sense of community
that allowed me to let go: the things I
thought I needed to say, and of preconceived
notions about what it meant to study student
affairs. Their reassuring nods and supportive
comments allowed me to see the value that I
brought to the program, in part due to my
full-time role in an often forgotten corner of
student affairs. Not only am I able to utilize
the teaching and practices of our program in
my job every day, but I am also able to help
explain what full-time working graduate
students might need to be successful in the
program.
I was so focused on shedding the
identities that made me different during my
undergraduate years that I didn’t realize how
the identities were an intrinsic part of my
graduate experience. Many of my initial
doubts about my fit in the program were
because of my role in admissions, which is
not always recognized as part of the student
affairs world and does little to integrate
itself. Admissions and enrollment are
thought of more exclusively as revenue
generators for a college. However,
admissions bridges an important divide
between secondary and post-secondary
education. When done correctly, it can
support students to be more successful on
their higher education journeys. Thanks to
the reflection and discernment invited by
SDA faculty, I was able to grow into my
worth, see the contributions I can make to

this program, and appreciate what I can do

“For the Hyphenated…”

As a quote-on-quote, Filipino-American, the 
hyphen in between always seems to 
distinguish who I am as a person. This letter 
goes out to those who carry a hyphen.  
 
  
For the Hyphenated… 
 
That hyphen always meant that you lived in 
two different worlds. Two different cultures.  
 
I know what it's like to feel like you don't 
know where you belong.  
 
I know what it's like to measure your own 
identity, trying to figure out if you are, 
Filipino enough or American enough. 
Whatever that means.  
 
I know what it’s like to be born in a third-
world country, then grow up in Western 
society and feel like a part of yourself was 
missing. I never knew what home meant to 
me. My life has been a constant struggle of 
trying to understand my roots while growing 
up in the United States. 
 
I know what it's like to wrestle both 
individualistic and collectivistic ideals that 
are interwoven in you. And encounter 
situations where your values are always 
being questioned.  Sometimes I don't know 
where I fall into. Like it's a never-ending tug 
of war of I am, where I should be and what I 
should believe in.  
 
I know that experience of prejudice, 
unfortunately coming from your family 
members who instilled in you that dark skin 
is ugly and that light skin is pretty. And 
during celebrations, they would gift you 
papaya soap and/or whitening products, 
displaying a non-verbal way to tell you that 
your skin is not enough. Your brown skin is 
beautiful. Melanin is in and will always be.  
 
Growing up you were poked fun at by your 
classmates during lunch because of the 
strong smells that came from your packed 
lunch. They could never understand the hard 
work your ma went through to cook that 
delicious garlic rice and pork longanisa, 
perfectly packaged in reusable Tupperware 
or plastic Cool Whip containers. Upset, you 
would beg your ma to pack your lunch with 
Lunchables, Go-gurt tubes, Uncrustables, 
and Capri-Suns, just so you can fit in with 
your school peers.  
 
Growing up bilingual, you carried the 
burden of being the translator for the family. 
Using multiple tongues, you realize that you 
had a hard time speaking each language you 
know. I understand the feeling of always 
being tongue-tied. The constant switching 
between languages always confused my 
brain and my peers when Tagalog 
accidentally leaves my mouth instead of the 
colonizer’s language. I couldn't easily find 
the words to express what I am trying to say.  
 
I understand that experience of judgment 
from your family members, who question 
you when you don't follow the only three 
careers laid out for you: medicine, 
engineering, or law. A silent judgment 
carries you in conversation. I hope that you 
find ways to discover your passions. It may 
take time but follow your interests, develop 
your strengths, and try new things. 
Especially if you've spent your entire life 
so far doing what others wanted you to 
do.

I understand what it means to work even 
harder to prove to others your worth. The 
sacrifices we had to make and the hardships 
that we went through. 
 
I understand that the imposter syndrome 
runs deeply through your veins. You may 
feel like you don't deserve to be where you 
are right now. That you don't deserve the 
blessings and success that are pouring onto 
you. But, you do my friend.  
 
I understand the many family members you 
have. The extensive list of cousins, aunties, 
uncles, lolas, lolos, that you have. Many of 
which you probably haven't met. 
 
I understand the constant urge to seek your 
past. To understand the part of your life 
where you grew up and wonder what your 
life might have been like. To seek those 
pieces only to find that your puzzle is not 
fully complete.  
 
I understand that feeling of pure exhilaration 
the moment you come to the motherland. 
And the excitement it brings when you 
know you get to discover more things about 
yourself. For me, Every time I come home, I 
always leave this place learning new things 
about myself, my past, and my family and I 
always yearn to go back.  
 
That phrase, "for the hyphenated," sunk 
deep into my soul. It was like a barricade of 
validation swept over me and told me that, 
“you are part of this world.” 
 
I am so proud to be hyphenated.  
 
It means that I don't just carry one culture, 
but multiple within me.  
 
It means that I carry stories that can resonate 
with both my Filipino side and American 
side. 
 
It means that I carry multiple tongues; 
speaking both my mother tongue and a 
universal language we call English.  
 
It means living each day with gratitude, that 
you have more than what your parents could 
ever ask for when they were your age.  
 
It means living my life not just for myself, 
but for the people around me. I carry the 
hard work and sacrifices my family and 
ancestors went through to get to where I am 
today.  
It means the fun family reunions and the 
small ways you get to know more of your 
culture. It could be through cooking with 
your Mama or Lola or even watching a 
teleserye with them on TFC.  
 
It means getting to travel; exploring outside 
where I live and constantly seeking the 
puzzle pieces of my past.  
 
It means getting to share with others my 
culture. To exchange our similarities and 
what makes us unique.  
 
So to the hyphenated: we need more of us 
to share our stories.  
 
I hope that this letter rings true to you and 
validates you as an incredible human being.  
 
Keep learning, keep growing, keep seeking, 
and keep discovering. Mabuhay.

Know About Seattle’s Minimum
Wage Increase

Effective Jan 1. 2025, Seattle’s minimum wage increased to
$20.76 an hour, up from $19.97. For employers with under
500 employees, and employers whose employees made
back the difference either in medical benefits or tips, the
previous minimum wage was $17.25. All businesses,
regardless of tipping practices or benefits, will now pay the
$20.76 hourly wage. This impacts business owners as well
as minimum wage employees, including many Seattle
University student employees. 
Kendall Kageyama, a third-year psychology major, works
10 hours a week as a student employee at the Seattle U
Writing Center. Kageyama spoke on the financial burdens
associated with working and living in Capitol Hill.  
“It’s really hard to live here. I live in an apartment where I
have to buy my own groceries and stuff, so a lot of the
money I do make goes to that,” Kageyama said. “It’s really nice that now I have more money I can go to places like Whole Foods
instead of Trader Joe’s.” 
Kageyama shared that she feels more secure and has more room in her budget for social outings due to the increase. 
“I have some things I want to do in the year like going on trips and stuff and I think this will definitely help me do that,” Kageyama
said. “If there’s anything I need, like any emergencies, I feel like this would help me navigate that as well.”
Seattle’s cost of living has risen dramatically in recent years, and for many minimum wage employees, this raise is not only welcome
but needed. Kageyama agreed. 
“It’s very much needed,” Kageyama said. “I think a lot of people would agree with the fact that it’s nice to be making more, and also a
lot of individuals do rely on their student jobs to be here.” 
Stacey Jones, a teaching professor in the economics department at Seattle U, discussed research done at the University of
Washington on the impact of previous minimum wage increases in Seattle. This research, according to Jones, saw an overall
increase in earnings partnered with a reduction in hours worked, but not a reduction in overall employment.

Minimum wage in Seattle increased to $20.76 per hour this
month.
Jones thinks that as an attempt to reduce overall inequality in the city, the minimum wage hasn’t been effective. 
“I think what I’m reading in the research suggests that it didn’t help that much with reducing inequality in Seattle,” Kageyama said. “I
mean some people are making more money, no question, some people are better off, but in terms of reducing overall inequality it
doesn’t seem to have made a huge difference.” 
Any increase in minimum wage also increases the cost of labor for employers. 
Anthony Anton, president and chief executive officer of the Washington Hospitality Association (WHA), a trade group that
represents more than 6,000 members of the hotel, restaurant and hospitality industry in Washington. The WHA’s mission is to
increase profit margins for their members within the association and furthermore to keep businesses open.  
“We’re really at a point where the industry’s gotta change,” Anton said, explaining that in his view, the current minimum wage leads
to a cost of labor for employers that creates a profit margin that isn’t sustainable. “We need to find a way to reduce costs
dramatically, and/or increase prices, and/or find some kind of balance, or increase revenue, to get that margin back to where
someone can open a restaurant in Seattle and chase their dream.”
According to Anton, restaurants in Seattle already employ about three to four people less than the national average, so he thinks it’s
unrealistic to see any further reduction in labor. He also doesn’t believe Seattle restaurants can raise prices much further without
losing a significant number of their customer base. 
“Picture this box closing in on a small business person, like ‘I’ve cut my costs, I’ve reduced my number of employees, I can’t really
raise my prices anymore, I have to change,’” Anton said. “We’ve got to work together to create a new business model.” 
While Anton isn’t sure what changes will or won’t work, he believes that if a successful change in the business model isn’t found
within four to six months, there will be a 4-9% decrease in the number of restaurants in Seattle. 
Jones reiterated that an important part of the discussion around wages and quality of life for minimum wage workers is the
decreased strength of labor unions in our country. 
“I think the minimum wage to some extent has been oversold as a replacement for labor unions, because we don’t have as strong a
labor movement as we used to,” Jones said. “The minimum wage I don’t think can replace that as a focus of how to help in the
balance of power between workers and employers.” 
The economic impacts of a minimum wage increase are complex, but many student employees are excited to see more money on
their paychecks in 2025.

12 Hours Without TikTok

Last Saturday evening, TikTok went offline in the United
States following an announcement on the platform two
hours earlier stating that the app had been banned. The app
was inaccessible to the estimated 170 million Americans
who use the social media platform.
The move is part of a broader timeline of political decisions
aimed at banning the app. For years, national security
concerns have been raised in the Senate regarding TikTok’s
ownership by ByteDance, a Chinese-based technology
company. Legislation enacted by the Senate gave TikTok
until Jan. 19 to sell the app to an American-based company
or face a ban in the U.S.
Timeline Leading to the Ban
March-April 2024: The Protecting Americans from Foreign
Adversary Controlled Applications Act, a bill banning
TikTok, is signed by President Joe Biden.
Jan. 17, 2025: The Supreme Court rules the law constitutional as part of TikTok v. Garland.
Jan. 18, 2025: TikTok blocks American users from viewing content, displaying the message, “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now.”
The Apple App Store and Google Play Store remove the app.
Jan. 19, 2025: TikTok resumes service for those who already have the app installed, posting the message, “As a result of President
Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!”
Jan. 20, 2025: President Donald Trump signs an executive order to delay the ban for 75 days.
After the executive order was signed, Americans backtracked to understand how they got there.
During his first presidency, Trump signed two executive orders in 2020 aimed at banning TikTok. However, this past Monday, shortly
after his inauguration, he signed an executive order to pause the current ban.
Onur Bakiner, an associate professor of political science and head of Seattle University’s Technology Ethics Initiative, explained the
strategic use of the term “President Trump” in TikTok’s message to users when the app went offline Jan. 18—two days before the
inauguration.
Bakiner said the phrasing appeared to be a calculated move by TikTok to win favor with Trump.
“TikTok was supposed to go down and stay down in the United States as of Jan. 19. Encouraged by Trump’s promise of an executive
order to extend the grace period, they went back online even before the inauguration,” Bakiner noted.

Currently, TikTok remains unavailable for download on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, as both companies have complied with
the order to remove the app. Bakiner clarified that Trump’s executive order grants TikTok more time to secure a sale and provides
users with additional time to say their goodbyes.
“Trump’s executive order instructs the attorney general ‘not to take any action to enforce the Act for a period of 75 days.’ So, it is a
delay in the implementation of the law, rather than overriding it. It seems like the executive order is designed to force ByteDance to
sell TikTok to an entity outside of China,” Bakiner said.
Bakiner states that the future of the app in America remains uncertain.
“ByteDance may decide to forgo the American market to maintain ownership of TikTok or sell the platform to an American
company. A third option would be Trump extending the delay of implementation with recurring executive orders. Honestly, nobody
knows what is next,” Bakiner said.
Caitlin Carlson, chair of Seattle U’s communication and media department, weighed in on the implications of TikTok’s ban. 
“It’s ironic to me that we’re having this bill come out and address national security issues around data privacy when we have no
national-level data privacy law as they do in Europe and a lot of other places,” Carlson said.
She also addressed the disruption the ban has caused for communities built on the platform.
“I think in the short term it is a real blow to people, and there has been a lot of positive organizing and information sharing and news
gathering that has happened on that platform that may not be accessible. But I am also very confident that alternatives will emerge,”
Carlson said.
Another group significantly affected by the ban is social media content creators like Emily Berrol, a Seattle U alumna with a TikTok
following of 22,000. 
“The potential ban affected me quite a lot. I do TikTok content creation for myself, but then I also do social media management for
work. Having the TikTok ban go into effect was a big deal. I was in denial about it at first; I didn’t think the ban was going to go
through,” Berrol said.“I wasn’t certain that the ban was gonna last for long. A lot of creators were making goodbye videos and saying
goodbye to the platform.” 
Berrol explained that her reliance on TikTok extends beyond personal use, as she uses it for professional purposes as well.
Although TikTok’s operations in the U.S. have been extended, American users and content creators alike must wait to see what lies
ahead for the platform.

Where Does the Ceasefire in
Gaza Leave Palestinians?

After a 15-month genocide, a ceasefire between Hamas
and Israel took effect Jan. 19. Both parties agreed to the
release of 200 Palestinian prisoners and four female Israeli
soldiers as part of the ceasefire conditions. The deal’s main
agenda was to establish an end to the current conflict and
release hostages.
The deal followed months of negotiations, protests and
international scrutiny. The deal’s contingencies add risk to
the ceasefire being successful. The terms outlined in the
deal are similar to the previous deal presented to the Biden
administration this past May. The new deal offered the
release of the hostages in exchange for Palestinian
prisoners being released and Israeli forces gradually withdrawing from the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege since 2023. 
The four Israeli soldiers released were identified as Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa and Naama Levy. The soldiers were
captured during the Hamas-led Oct. 7. attack. Hamas surrendered the Israeli soldiers to the Red Cross, who then returned the
soldiers to their families. The families expressed joy and relief at seeing their loved ones again. 
The ceasefire is a three-phase agreement process. 
The first phase will last from Jan. 19 to March 5, 2025. During this initial period, all conflict will stop. Hamas is expected to release a
total of 33 hostages which includes women, female soldiers, elderly men and hostages who need medical attention. 
During the second phase, Israel is expected to release 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and reduce their military presence in areas
populated with Palestinian civilians. Palestinians who have been displaced previously will be allowed back in their neighborhoods
and aid lorries will be allowed into Gaza each day. Lastly, Israeli troops will fully withdraw from Gaza.  
The third and final phase of the ceasefire involves negotiating both the return of the bodies of deceased hostages, as well as what it
will look like for Gaza to rebuild. 
Sadie Nelson, a fourth-year history and women, gender & sexuality studies double major, expressed both excitement and
apprehension over the ceasefire agreement.
“I am very nervous to see how it plays out,” Nelson said. “At the same time, I think it’s important to emphasize the joy and the chance
for so many people on the ground in Gaza.”

The first released group of 200 Palestinian prisoners were welcomed and embraced by loved ones and onlookers. The families of
the prisoners were waiting anxiously by the side of the road as buses carrying the prisoners left the Israeli Ofer military prison in
the occupied West Bank. Families embraced their loved ones in the street as crowds formed around the buses to carry the prisoners
on their shoulders. The ceasefire announcement echoed throughout the Middle East, sparking street celebrations. 
Lubna Alzaroo, a part-time environmental studies professor at the University of Washington who grew up in Hebron, Palestine,
shared her feelings about the ceasefire. 
“There’s some relief but a lot of skepticism, I think that’s the main thing. Even today, I was talking to my parents back in Palestine,
and they had a lot of skepticism. They asked me if I was happy about the ceasefire. I was like, yeah, obviously, and then they were
saying, ‘Yeah, but we don’t know if it’s even going to last, this ceasefire,’” Alzaroo said. 
Alzaroo brought up how this skepticism stems from past deals that Israel has made with Palestine.
“They constantly break these deals,” Alzaroo said. 
Even amid uncertainty about Israel’s willingness to honor the terms, Alzaroo expressed that this is a welcomed change in the
conflict. She hopes that this time will be used to grieve loved ones and rebuild Gaza.
Nova Robinson, associate professor of history and international studies and director of women, gender & sexuality studies, who
specializes in Middle Eastern studies, shared some similar remarks on Gaza’s current state. 
“We need to be thinking about how we can provide the many forms of aid that the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank
need to rebuild their lives and to be guaranteed lives full of dignity that they are guaranteed under international human rights law,”
Robinson said. 
She mentioned material aid, access to psychological resources, counseling, doctors and teachers as some of the resources needed to
help rebuild during this time. 
According to Robinson, there is hope that Israel will maintain the conditions of the ceasefire. 
“This ceasefire does feel like it might stick in a different way in large part, because there’s been a change in administration in the
United States to a government that is ultimately more favorable to Israel than the Biden administration,” Robinson said.
According to Nelson, it is now more important than ever for activist momentum to continue in the U.S. 
 “For students or anyone who may care, now, especially, is the time to continue putting pressure in the United States on our own
systems which support Israel. I mean, it would not be possible to do their genocide without the support from the U.S.,” Nelson said. 
A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has been long awaited by both sides to help bring loved ones back together and help recover.
Although the path forward is fraught with uncertainty, this ceasefire marks a definitive push toward peace after months of ongoing
conflict.

Currently showing at the Seattle Art Museum, Joyce J.
Scott’s exhibit, “Walk a Mile in My Dreams,” is a vast and
sprawling expression of the artist’s journey through
themes, mediums, and life. It displays a variety of pieces
that challenge the viewer and includes interactive sections
that bridge the gap between artist and spectator.
Much of Scott’s work is fueled by her undying belief that art
is a powerful force and one that is omnipresent in our lives.
The varied and stylistically diverse nature of her art is an
ode to her heritage and influences, which is part of the
reason that she believes that art is so integral to us all—it is
a reflection of the people that create and perceive it, and
takes into account our pasts, presents and futures.
Much of this can be seen in the centerpiece of the exhibit. As you
walk in, you are greeted with an altar of sorts—a collection of
childhood items, books, Buddhist sculptures, African imagery, Dia
de Los Muertos heads and much more—surrounded by quilts
(which Scott likens to the stories and fables that we pass down) and
beadwork. It is an intimate depiction of her personhood; the perfect
vehicle to introduce an exhibit that catalogs the great majority of
the artist’s life.
The multimedia nature of Scott’s work is incredibly important.
Referring to her creativity as her ‘inheritance,’ her artist mother
and artisan family members passed down to her many skills and
disciplines, and she picked up many more in the travels that
followed her early life. The exhibit features her weaving, beadwork,
jewelry, music, performance art, glasswork, basketry, quilting,
theatrical work and many more. 
To many viewers, like Melissa Blount, the magnitude of Scott’s work is one of the most captivating aspects.
“It’s been extraordinary and overwhelming, just the breadth of work that she’s done and just the diversity of it. I didn’t know that
she had performance art in her toolbox,” Blount said. “She is an incredibly brave and courageous and bold talent and just to see all of
her work throughout over 50 years is pretty brilliant.”

While Scott’s work is highly representative of herself as a person, it
also achieves another critical function of her artistic philosophy by
working to unify people for the sake of achieving social change. Her
works tackle inequality in all of its forms, utilizing humor, grave
seriousness and everything in between to attack the evils of our
world at their roots. However, they aren’t only critical—her works
also uplift the marginalized, celebrating their strength and history,
and fighting stereotypes through nuanced and sincere depictions of
those that rarely see the spotlight.
Fr. Jerry Cobb, S.J., former coordinator of Seattle U’s campus art
collection, stated that, “Joyce Scott’s art is beautiful on the surface
and radical in its underlying meanings… Her sprawling exhibition
covers quite a few gallery rooms and somehow you both lose yourself
and find yourself in the midst of her art.”
The viewer’s immersion in Scott’s work is fully intentional. As part of her belief in community, she breaks down many of the barriers
that traditional art upholds, inviting the viewer to participate in her art. The exhibit features an interactive weaving section where
viewers can use Scott’s technique to create tapestries that get displayed within the exhibit. 
Gabriella Garcia-Greco, the interactive weaving gallery assistant, speaks to the importance of the gallery in the context of the
exhibit.
“She is an excellent educator, so it’s really important to her and it is part of her values to make her the way of making art accessible
to community,” Garcia-Greco said. “She designed this part of the exhibition as well, and it was very important to her that people got
to experience how to make some of the things that she learned to make.”
The interactive gallery is one of the most popular parts of the
exhibit, with groups of friends, families, and individual visitors
gathered in community across the multiple looms, realizing Scott’s
goal of connection and creation through her art. 
In addition to being interesting, non-traditional and thematically
consistent with the exhibit, the interactive section thrives because
it is incredibly fun. 
“I’ve seen people weave for up to an hour,” Garcia-Greco mused.
Joyce J. Scott’s exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum has lofty goals—it
tries to encapsulate the huge and varied career of one of the most
prolific contemporary artists, connect with a variety of viewers on
complex and difficult themes, and impart an eclectic and radical
philosophy about what art should be. Miraculously, it manages to do all of these things and more, finding an incredible balance
between lofty high art and the deeply personal reflections of a heartfelt human being.

At a concert celebrating rap artists making a name for
themselves in the Pacific Northwest, Seattleite Yonny
performed his first headliner in his hometown, with support
from Vic Daggs II and Vinnie WYA as opening artists. Yonny
headlined another show in New York City Nov. 8.
As Madame Lou’s filled for the show, local artist and
concertgoer Retro pointed out many other artists in
attendance, from musicians to actors in Yonny’s music
videos. For artists trying to make it in Seattle, he cites
extensive networks of community and friends as the key to
success.
“That’s always a big factor that on the outside you don’t really see…
It’s just a really cool community. Once you’re in it, you start to meet
other people that are also very talented, and it’s really cool to see
them all support each other amidst the ‘Seattle Freeze,’” Retro said.
The blending of talent at the core of Yonny’s projects is also evident
in the music videos for his work. Clips from the videos are projected
on the screen behind him throughout the show and feature iconic
locations from Seattle and around the West Coast.
Concertgoer Amar Goyal was first attracted to Yonny’s music
through a music video screening of “City in Motion.” Many stylistic
techniques featured in the video are adapted from techniques first
showcased on social media, such as creative use of tracking shots and freeze frames to forge an instantly recognizable look. 
Goyal has been a fan of Yonny’s work for about a year, and planned to attend the Jan. 16 concert after a recent screening of another
music video from Yonny’s 2024 project “Everywhere, But Always.”
“Music videos really draw me in. I see all the work that they put into it. I really feel like local artists that focus on showing Seattle in
their music videos are cool to see,” Goyal said.
Yonny cites a variety of musical influences in “Everywhere, But Always.” The first artist to inspire him while working on the tracklist
was Tame Impala. Then he found himself listening to jazz and Pink Floyd, a musical introduction facilitated by one of Yonny’s friends.
His first experiences listening to Pink Floyd were a part of the inspiration for “Summertime Madness,” and the jazz influence can be
heard on songs like “Hood Spirituals” and “Rich in Melanin.”

Yonny’s first project, titled “Ghetto Sunset,” was released in 2022. For “Everywhere, But
Always,” Yonny wanted to go in a more vulnerable direction, feeling that he needed to be
more open with his audience about who he was.
“People are gonna like you as an artist, but they’re not gonna know who you are. I say
that to say, I feel like the project was a good way to start opening myself up to people…
The more things I put out, the more people will learn,” Yonny said.
Another key part of getting to know artists in the modern media landscape is their social
media presence. For the promotion of his song “City In Motion,” Yonny tried posting daily
edits of the music video to short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels to
garner new listeners. Yonny is also interested in finding ways to build his other hobbies—
such as basketball—into content creation outside of music to show off a more personal
side.
The concert itself was a
delightful experience,
with a lively crowd that
responded with
enthusiasm to the music.
One moment Yonny was
moving through the crowd, and the next he was lifted up into the air
to crowdsurf. Even the onstage photographer sang along to the
lyrics while snapping photos. The atmosphere was filled with
energy for Yonny and the two opening artists.
“I think it’s really cool having all my friends [here], because literally
everyone that is a part of the show is a friend of mine,” Yonny said.
Yonny is bringing something unique to the table at every step in the
creative process: the cover art, music videos, and the songs themselves create experiences in a bottle that speak to a specific time
and place. This artist is one to watch for those seeking out local talent. Yonny has potential ahead of him as he continues to work and
cultivate his craft.

I used to loathe the thought of being eighteen. 
I wanted to be a careless, dreaming, child. And then 
Time Won. It won, it wins, it always does. Just like it cackled as  
I thew my graduation cap into the air it laughs as I flip through my calendar. 
 
It did not even let me process this sudden change in who I was. 
Now when I go to restaurants with my mom, they ask us if we want separate checks. 
 What happened to me? What happened to me? 
What made me adult enough for separate checks? 
Voter registrations and forms and independence are being shoved down my throat and 
 
Choking me. Choking me. 
 
I want to be eighteen forever. Eighteen. I forever want to be in between  
childhood and adulthood. 
Liminal. 
 
Because once I turn nineteen there is no going back.  
That’s why I make Christmas lists and refuse to drive and don’t buy soap alone. Because I am 
desperate to be a child again.

In a few months they will say, “Make a Wish!”, and I know what I will think. 
I will be confined to a chair as people gaze at me with hope. 
What do I want? Maybe to accept myself? Maybe. Maybe to stay eighteen forever. 
Maybe to be less ner-  
“Close Your Eyes!”, everyone I love will say. 
Maybe to have a more realistic dream? Mayb- 
“Remember don’t tell us it or else you’ll jinx it!”, my sister will say. 
Why can’t I make more than one wish? 
“Blow out the candle already, I want cake!”, my sister will say. 
I have to blow now. So, I guess what I really wish i- 
“Good now your wish will come true!” 
 
All of the 
Wishes I dare to dream 
Do not require the adult in the suit in the cubicle in the building. 
They are the young writer in the café. They are the teacher. 
They are the traveler. All of them are young and dreaming and excited and hopeful. 
My fear is not the dark or snakes or heights. 
It is becoming nineteen and then twenty and then thirty 
Losing passion as candles are blown out and calendars are flipped.
