    No full text
Background: The number of patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) has increased in the United States, indicating the growing importance of addressing their healthcare needs. Aim: To examine existing translation services and explore the challenges healthcare providers encounter in their use. Methods: A mixed-methods cross-sectional survey was conducted among providers, registered nurses, and medical assistants at a diverse urgent care clinic in a city in Washington State. Results: Interpreter availability, technological disruptions, training gaps, and interpreter accuracy emerged as significant barriers. Implications for Practice: Comprehensive improvements in interpreter service accessibility, technological reliability, and cultural competency training

Exploring Prenatal Care Providers\u27 Perceptions of Barriers to Physical Activity During Pregnancy: A Survey of Obstacles and Attitudes

    No full text
Despite the well-established benefits of physical activity during pregnancy, most pregnant individuals in the United States fail to meet recommended guidelines. The aim of this quality improvement project, conducted through Seattle University College of Nursing, was to explore prenatal care providers’ perceptions of barriers to physical activity counseling during pregnancy. Using the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment (EPIS) framework, a mixed-methods survey was distributed to midwives and obstetric nurses at Neighborcare Health clinics. The survey assessed providers\u27 beliefs, perceived barriers, and current practices related to physical activity counseling. Results showed that while most providers acknowledged the importance of physical activity, they reported limited time and complex medical conditions as major barriers to counseling. Additionally, providers expressed a desire for patient education materials and organizational support to better integrate physical activity discussions into routine prenatal visits. Based on these findings, recommendations were developed to improve the consistency and quality of physical activity counseling in prenatal care, including use of brief counseling tools and integration of educational handouts. Results were disseminated through a poster and presentation to clinic staff. This project highlights the need for targeted strategies to empower prenatal care providers in promoting physical activity among pregnant individuals

End-of-Life Care Educational Program for Neuro Nurses

    No full text
Introduction: High-quality end-of-life (EOL) care necessitates both effective symptom management and therapeutic communication with patients and families. Nurses often report knowledge gaps in symptom management and discomfort when engaging in sensitive conversations during EOL care. Methods: Neuro-nurses at a tertiary care hospital were invited to participate in an educational intervention focused on EOL symptom management and communication. The training occurred during both day and night clinical shifts. Effectiveness was measured using pre- and postintervention assessments adapted from validated questionnaires. All responses collected anonymously via REDCap. Results: Post-intervention, 83% of participants showed improved scores in the knowledge assessment, with an average increase of 42.03%. Nurses with 7–10 years of experience (n = 2) demonstrated the highest improvement at 73.81%, followed by nurses with 1–3 years of experience (n = 11) who improved by 52.36%. Comfort levels in EOL communication increased on average 22.03% post-intervention, with the greatest improvement seen in emotionally complex discussions involving spiritual concerns and symptom management. Early-career nurses demonstrated the most improvement in culturally and spiritually sensitive communication. Conclusion: The educational program demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing nurses’ knowledge in EOL symptom management and comfort in communication. Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) can utilize these findings to provide targeted education, mentor nursing staff, and promote culturally sensitive, evidence-based EOL care across interdisciplinary teams

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Simplified Education on Respiratory Infections for South Asian Immigrants Parents of Children 3 months to 18 years of Age.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy has been shown to be a major contributing factor to an individual’s ability to manage symptoms and therefore their health outcomes as well. Data demonstrates that those of South Asian descent tend to lack the health literacy necessary to manage health. Respiratory infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses. It is important that parents understand how to appropriately manage their child’s symptoms. METHODS: A pre-intervention questionnaire was obtained from participating parents prior to the intervention. The post-intervention questionnaire was obtained at least one week after the intervention. A paired t-test analysis was conducted based on the questionnaire outcomes. INTERVENTION: Participants received a simplified educational session on respiratory infections in children. The intervention consisted of verbal education supplemented by an infographic. RESULTS: Nine parents participated in the project. The maximum score for the questionnaire was 13. The mean scores were 8.33 for the pre-test and 9.97 for the post-test. The standard deviation between pre- and post-intervention questionnaires was 1.87. T-test analysis resulted in a p-value of 0.03, which was less than the significance level of 0.05 and the null hypothesis was rejected. CONCLUSIONS: The paired t-test data analysis demonstrated that there was a statistically significant difference between parents’ answers to the pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. The findings suggest that simplified verbal education supplemented by an infographic may be effective in improving knowledge of South Asian immigrant parents and potentially other vulnerable populations as well
