The Cycles of Coping with Privilege
When confronted with the realities of racism, white folks often experience discomfort because the realities of racism do not align with a deeply held belief that we live in a post-racial society. This article analyzes the cognitive and emotional processes that white folks seem to experience as they choose to resist or embrace their role in dismantling systemic racism. A conceptual model is introduced and offered as strategy for restructuring white identity development into a cyclical process. The digestible language of the model aims to compel white folks to eliminate racism, even if they hold a belief that racism no longer exists. Additionally, the model’s usefulness as a process of white racial healing is discussed
Legacy Admissions: A Devil\u27s Advocacy Approach
This paper explores the topic of legacy admissions as it relates to college access and equity in American higher education. A devil’s advocate approach is used to explore the often-ignored positive attributes of legacy admissions. This first section of this paper will defend the practice of legacy admissions by using a few different perspectives. First, I explore how criticism of legacy admissions is invalid because the process will eventually not be a barrier for students. Second, I will explore themes surrounding the stance of how legacy admissions play a positive role in the college search process for students. Finally, I will dive into how the practice of legacy admissions contributes to the success and support of all students in prestigious institutions. The second half of this paper will be a reflection on my effort in arguing for a different perspective than my own personal values and ethics. Upon reflection, I still stand with limiting legacy admissions or moving toward legacy admissions being less of a factor in the college acceptance process
Gender and Dominance within the American Dream: A Review of Degrees of Difference: Men, Women, and the Value of Higher Education
Enrollment trends in higher education in the United States have changed over the last few decades to be less male and less white. Nancy S. Niemi provides a bleak outlook at where and how power and dominance shift among these changing de- mographics of college students. She offers a compelling account of the ways pow- er and privilege adjust to maintain male dominance in society. As thoroughly re- searched as the work is, however, it seldom wanders out of the heteronormative world, and fails to address non-binary gender identities that are increasingly visible among college student populations. She ends the book with 10 important remind - ers that practitioners of higher education should keep in mind, which have impor- tant implications for student affairs professionals
Culminating Research: Black Student Experience Study
Seattle University boasts a diverse student body, filled with a myriad of perspectives, backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. The institution also places value on serving and supporting these various groups through a range of programs and initiatives. For the Black community, Moral Mondays at SU is an active Black Lives Matter initiative which was founded in 2014 by former staff member and alumnus Tyrone Brown. Since its inception, programming under this initiative has explored, critically analyzed, and highlighted Black experiences, history, and culture in the United States and at Seattle University. Inspired by recent declines in attendance at Moral Mondays at SU programs, a need arose to better understand the experience of this student population and uncover ways that the institution could better reach them. Through analysis of the Black student experience, this study seeks to provide insight to help university officials improve services for this population
