Desire	Drowning

I	consider	them	 
Find	a	flat	one	 
she	says		 
throw	the	flatness		 
against	the	horizon	of	the	river	
Pick	it	up,	she	whispers,	sounding	grim	 
I	listen,	look	up		 
to	the	wooden	swing	and	the	hanging	rope	
that	carries	bodies	into	the	water	 
I	crouch,	throw	it		 
parallel	to	the	gently	streaming	water	
The	rainbow-white	stone	 
becoming	part	of	the	current		 
for	a	short,	short	moment	 
It	sinks	only	a	few	feet	from	 
the	riverbed	 
Too	close	to	me	 
To	the	wet	pebbled	boundary	
I	know	I	should	dive	 
Should	not	hesitate	 
Not	stretch	out	the	in	ev	i	ta	bil	i	ty	
of	becoming	heavy	with	wetness	 
But	I	am	afraid	 
I	breathe 
I	 
hold	 
it	 
I	jump	in	 
Not	in	a	cannonball,	but	some	clumsy,	unsure

I	sink,	heavier	than	ever	 
Water	pressuring	my	lungs	 
as	I	breathe	it	in	 
Throw	my	hands	down	and	out	 
at	the	mud	and	pebbles

I	desperately	grab	handfuls	 
Make	a	vessel	out	of	the	fabric	 
of	my	shirt,	clutching	it	from	the	bottom	 
Holding	it	up	to	my	heart	 
	 
I	swim	against	the	pressure	 
Breach	the	surface,	it	 
doesn’t	feel	like	I'm	breathing		 
But	I	ignore	that,	ignore	the	coldness	 
sticking	and	wetness	that	doesn’t	dry	 
away	in	the	summer	sun	and	ignore	 
the	way	my	chest	no	longer	raises	 
	 
At	the	house,	someone’s	house,	 
my	grandpa’s	or	aunt’s	or	great	aunt’s	or	cousin’s	 
I	spread	out	the	river	floor	that	I	collected	 
Consider	the	colors	 
	 
The	pebbles	are	brown	and	gray	 
Small	enough	to	nearly	be	sand	 
Nothing	like	the	rainbow-white	 
That	I	threw	away	 
	 
The	pebbles	chant	in	a	heavy	whisper,	saying	 
They're	 
Dead	 
Dull	 
Nothing	 
That	they’re	tired	of	sinking	 
	 
That	they’re	pieces	of	me	 
	 
I	sweep	the	pebbles	off	the	table	 
in	a	violent	rush	of	rejection

five	days	a	week 
(except	when	i	lie	and	say	i	am	sick) 
i	march 
to	the	factory 
where	we	make	the	stuff 
that	makes	the	world	go	round 
(they	won’t	tell	us	what	it	does) 
and	once	a	month 
like	everyone	else 
they	take	a	bone	from	me 
one	bone 
cleanly	cut 
nothing	more 
and	they	sew	me	up 
and	ask	me	how	i	feel 
(i	say	“i’m	fine”) 
and	they	grind	it	up	to	dust	 
it’s	beautiful	to	watch 
the	white	stuff	flies	up 
and	we	catch	it 
and	sift	it 
and	make	it	into	the	stuff 
(the	stuff	that	makes	the	world	go	round) 
but	i	have	a	secret	 
on	the	grinder	every	day 
they	leave	the	marrow 
mine	and	my	coworkers’ 
no	one	seems	to	notice 
so	i	stay	behind	every	day	 
and	i	lick	the	grinder	clean 
it	tastes	so	good 
i	don’t	eat	meat 
never	have 
but	this.

scraping 
ripping 
pulling 
chewing 
slurping 
swallowing 
gulping 
gasping	for	breath 
i	can	taste	them 
sinews	and	ligaments	and	muscles	and	organs	and	blood	and	skin	and 
bone

eat 
it

if	i	didn’t	have	the	marrow	i	couldn’t	march 
to	the	factory 
where	they	take	our	bones 
and	use	them	to	make	the	stuff

Fire

I	didn’t	know	if	I	had	ever	really	felt	alive	before	this.	I’d	never	felt	so	much.	It	
gripped	my	core,	and	I	was	sure	I	was	going	to	be	shoved	out	of	my	own	body.	There	
just	wasn’t	any	room	for	me	along	with	every	other	sensation. 
Everything	was	bright.	It	stung	my	eyes,	leaving	mottled	colors	in	my	vision	that	I	
could	not	blink	away.	The	heat	around	me	was	just	as	welcoming	as	it	was	painful,	
embracing	every	part	of		me	in	a	way	that	might	melt	my	skin	off.	I	could	feel	my	
pulse	race	under	my	skin,	adrenaline	fueling	a	primal	fear	that	was	the	closest	thing	
to	self-preservation	I	had.	The	air	was	boiling	and	filled	with	smoke,	but	closing	my	
eyes	to	blink	it	away	just	seemed	to	irritate	them	further	and	forced	out	stinging	
tears. 
I	knew	that	this	could	kill	me.	Yet,	I	couldn’t	stop	the	grin	from	taking	over	my	face.	I	
must	look…	well,	it	would	be	disturbing,	wouldn’t	it?	To	see	someone	facing	death	
like	this	and	laughing	about	it.	But	I	felt	invincible.	Or,	no,	maybe	not	invincible;	like	
I	was	burning	up	along	with	this	damn	house.	I	wasn’t	scared	of	the	destruction,	of	
death,	of	any	of	it. 
I	had	been	afraid	before,	and	where	had	that	gotten	me? 
Something	crashed	behind	me,	sending	white-hot	sparks	flying.	Part	of	the	roof	had	
broken	off	and	fallen	into	the	flames.	A	few	glowing	flakes	caught	on	my	bare	arm,	
and	the	pain	nearly	felt	cold	in	comparison	to	the	heat	of	the	air. 
The	air	would	run	out	soon.	The	fire	had	engulfed	most	of	the	house,	or	at	least	
consumed	the	room	around	me	enough	so	I	could	not	tell	the	difference.	It	was	dry	
and	run-down	anyways.	I	knew	it	wouldn’t	take	long	before	this	happened,	but	the	
lightheadedness	still	caught	me	off	guard.	I	was	gasping,	but	it	felt	like	shoving	
gravel	down	my	throat.	My	mind	felt	hazy,	and	I	watched	my	vision	waver. 
I	didn’t	plan	on	dying	here.	But	the	flames	were	tempting,	vivid,	and	intense	in	their	
destruction,	and	my	feet	felt	cemented	to	the	ground	as	I	watched	them	devour	this	
place.	And	now,	I	wasn’t	sure.	Even	if	I	could	find	a	path,	I	didn’t	want	to	let	go	of	this	
moment,	be	it	my	last	or	not. 
I	looked	up—more	of	the	roof	had	collapsed	than	I	thought.	I	could	see	the	night	sky,	
though	anything	other	than	that	was	difficult	to	make	out. 
“What	are	you	doing?	NO!”	I	could	hear	a	voice	above	the	roar	and	crackle	of	flames. 
 
I	closed	my	eyes.	No.	They	weren’t	supposed	to	be	here.	I’d	have	to…	I	needed	to	get	
out	of	here.	The	smile	burned	off	of	my	face,	and	I	could	only	feel	dread.	They’d	see	
this.	Not	the	charred	aftermath,	but	the	surging	flames.	I	wasn’t	prepared	for	that.	Of	
all	the	things	I	had	steadied	myself	against,	them	as	a	witness	to	me	coming	apart	
was	not	one	of	them.	I	forced	myself	forward.	But	the	sound	of	my	heart	was	getting	
too	loud	in	my	head,	and	I	was	too	dizzy	to	go	far.	I	crashed	to	my	knees,	hacking	out	
coughs.	Even	closer	to	the	floor,	away	from	the	thickest	of	the	smoke,	I	couldn’t	
catch	my	breath.	There	were	dark	spots	in	my	vision,	consuming	the	bright	flare	of	
the	fire. 
 
I	could	hear	them	yell,	and	I	thought	they	must	be	far	away.	But	a	hand,	chillingly	
cold	on	my	own	fevered	skin,	seized	my	arm,	dragging	me.	I	tried	to	move,	but	I	was	
weaker	than	I	thought. 
 
“What	have	you	done?”	Their	voice	was	equal	parts	panicked	and	horrified,	but	the	
surprise	I	had	been	certain	would	be	there	was	absent.	I	tried	to	open	my	eyes	again	
to	look	at	their	face,	but	it	was	too	hazy	to	see	more	than	their	silhouette	above	me. 
  
“You	were—”	a	fit	of	coughing	ripped	its	way	out	of	my	chest.	“You	were	supposed	
to	be	gone.” 
 
They	didn’t	respond,	only	clutched	my	arm	tighter.	When	it	was	clear	I	wasn’t	
getting	up	any	time	soon,	they	kneeled	down	next	to	me,	placing	one	arm	across	my	
back	and	the	other	under	my	knees.	“I’m	getting	us	out	of	here,”	they	said,	and	that	
was	the	only	warning	I	had	before	they	stood,	the	movement	sparking	a	rush	of	
vertigo. 
 
I	did	not	open	my	eyes	until	the	blistering	heat	against	me	cooled	into	the	night	air	
and	I	found	myself	taking	gulping,	desperate	breaths.	They	were	saying	something	
again,	but	I	couldn’t	hear	over	my	own	labored	breathing	and—ah.	The	house. 
 
Looking	from	afar	had	a	different	satisfaction	than	from	the	inside,	but	it	was	no	less	
delightful. 
 
The	house	would	be	gone	before	anyone	could	put	the	fire	out	if	anyone	even	tried.	
Every	memory,	every	bit	of	nostalgia	and	fear	from	that	place	would	burn	down	
with	it.	Good.

On a clear spring evening at Climate Pledge Arena, the
Seattle Storm laced up to take on the visiting Dallas Wings.
The Wings, despite an early lead, could not weather the
Storm and fell 83-77, bringing them down to the very
bottom of the standings with a disappointing record of 1-7.
The Storm broke their 3-game losing streak and improved
to 4-4 for a 6th place spot in the standings.
The Wings were missing one of their star players, the
number one 2025 draft pick and national collegiate
champion guard Paige Bueckers. She suffered a concussion
during a game against the Sky and sat out this game in
Seattle. Bueckers is the Wings’ second-leading scorer, only
behind guard Arike Ogunbowale.
Still, even without Bueckers, they came out of the gates moving and shooting the ball well. In the first quarter, Ogunbowale was very
successful in the isolation game, making multiple contested midrange stepbacks. Seattle was kept in the game by back-to-back
threes from center Li Yueru.
The game stayed close from there, and Seattle’s interior defense
made it difficult for the Wings to score close to the basket. Forward-
Center Ezi Magbegor tallied three blocks in just the first quarter, and
the teams headed into the break with Dallas only up one point.
In the second quarter, the Storm opened by going up by five points in
the first minute and a half of the quarter, their first lead of the game.
Despite the start, Dallas’ started to take advantage of Seattle’s
aggressive help defense and found a lot of open cuts to the basket,
quickly catching up and overtaking the Storm.
Again, Seattle’s defense tried their best—Magbegor had two more
blocks in the quarter, bringing her to five blocks before the half.
However, their shots couldn’t fall, and Dallas’ scoring culminated with
a buzzer-beater 3-pointer by center Luisa Geiselsoder to give the
Wings a comfortable eight-point lead going into the halftime break.
According to Storm forward Gabby Williams, coach Noelle Quinn told the players in an impassioned speech that they wouldn’t be

able to win if they didn’t get back into the flow of the game and play with intensity.
“In Noelle’s halftime speech, she talked to us about just getting out of our heads, you know? I think we suffer a lot from paralysis by
analysis, and we just need to play basketball,” forward Nneka Ogwumike said.
The speech seemed to work, as the Storm quickly started chipping
away at the Dallas lead. Despite a Williams ankle injury early in the
quarter, the Storm grabbed hold of the game as guard Erica
Wheeler came in and gave them an explosive burst in scoring. Her
aggression and ability to drive and kick the ball made her a motor
for the offense, and strong defensive play shuttered the Wings’
offense and completely nullified their original lead. Quinn
acknowledged how important having a veteran like Wheeler is.
“It is good to have that, like, that boom. [Erica] understands the
moments in this league, she also understands her role, she
understands how to be a great teammate and that energy becomes
contagious,” Quinn said.
The Storm went on a 16-2 run in the third, but for Williams, it
wasn’t about extending the run—it was about taking each
possession one at a time.
“I didn’t even realize that we were going that much of a run, because like I said, it was about winning each possession,” Williams said.
In the fourth quarter, the Wings struggled to play against the Storm’s defense. Ogunbowale, the Wings’ leading scorer, fizzled out
after a good first quarter and only had eight points for the game on 4-15 shooting. Both Quinn and Williams emphasized the
importance of their active defense and how it kept them in the game, allowing them to score.
“We had 33 deflections. I thought that was an indicator of our defense just moving and finding the spots to impact on the end of the
floor. We’re physical, we’re communicative, we’re on a string and we really use that as a catalyst for our offense,” Quinn said.
Williams added that the defensive intensity was much better than their other games, but emphasized that they needed to bring that
intensity to their rebounding, as they were obliterated in the offensive rebound game, only having three to the Wings’ 20.
“[Our defensive intensity was] much better, though now we’ve got to rebound. We’ve just got [to] rebound and finish these
possessions out, but it’s a step in the right direction,” Williams said.
The Storm extended their lead and ran with it in the fourth quarter. Despite some squabbles with Wings players and some hard
fouls, the Wings were unable to regain momentum, which wasn’t helped by their turnovers and missed shots. Their bench ended up
with 30 points, and players like Williams and guard Zia Cooke were instrumental to the Storm’s win.
While this loss solidified the Wings’ spot as the worst team in the WNBA, the Storm escaped their losing streak and hope to
improve their situation in the middle of the standings. Their next game is against the Phoenix Mercury, where the Storm will hope to
once again establish a winning record.

Villainous Bros At Mario Kart

I am not going to claim I am good at Mario Kart, but I would
like to believe I did well in this tournament. Last
Wednesday, the Seattle University E-Sports Club held a
Mario Kart tournament in Chardin, where groups of two
competed to be at the top. 
You could either sign in with a buddy, or you could sign in
alone and try to get lucky to have somebody play with you. I
sadly had no such pleasure of having any of my friends or
anybody I know come with me, but I happened to be paired
with a great partner. 
Going into the waiting room where we would sit anxiously
for the groups that came in, I was excited yet nervous about
who and what I would be facing. I started by introducing
myself to everybody and asking questions, such as “How
good are you at Mario Kart?” and “How long have you played for?”, which did not help alleviate my anxiety. 
Some answered with a reassuring reply, such as “not much” or “just a little.” However, others did not have such comforting answers.
As per my luck, there happened to be last year’s winners of the Mario Kart tournament sitting right next to me. I asked them if they
knew of any shortcuts or tricks in the game that I might make use of, but they just said they didn’t know much, which somewhat put
me at ease. 
With all that was going on, my partner and I had to come up with a team name. Before we decided, though, we had to see what
characters were using to influence our answer. I decided, considering I was playing Waluigi and my partner was playing King Boo,
that we would be called the Villainous Bros. 
As we waited, the club provided us with Gatorade and Red Bull, which was a nice touch. After all the attendees had arrived, the
announcer came in and told us of all the house rules for the game to begin. No cheating, no profanity, no game glitches, etc. 
We started heading towards the game room, away from the waiting room, to see which team was playing which. As our luck had it,
we were playing against two very experienced players who also had a very complex build. When the first round ended, I looked at
my partner and said with sorrow in my eyes, “We are here to have fun, right?” 
We lost the first round very harshly; however, we still had one more chance to climb up the leaderboard. My partner and I decided

to lock in and look up a meta build that would help us win. Considering we had 20 minutes to wait for our next round, we sat down
and planned out our character very well. 
The second we got our characters figured out, we were confident that we would win something. When they yelled out our group
name, and we started our second round, we were both excited and nervous. We managed to narrowly beat our competition. My
partner and I got so excited, and we had faith that we would not end up last. My partner, however, did not fail to remind me that I
was hopeless, not 20 minutes ago, of our situation. 
I denied all the accusations that my partner brought up. We moved on to the fourth round, where we got to face what seemed to be
a very skilled player. Everybody seemed to know how good the person they were facing was; however, my partner and I did not
know our opponent, so we just kept our confidence and remained in a state of ignorant bliss.
The person we faced not only destroyed us, but he did it without a partner who happened to be as good as he, who had to leave for
personal circumstances. My partner and I lost our fourth round; however, we ended up in fifth place out of 11 competitors. For a
bunch of people who haven’t played the game for a while and aren’t as skilled, we felt pretty lucky and proud of the work we did.
Even if we didn’t end up going home with the winning medal, I was happy to be part of the team and to see everyone put their best
effort into winning the tournament. For me, it was all about the fun environment and the new friend I made.

On Sunday night, Philadelphia burned and the fountains in
Kansas City ran… their normal color. The Philadelphia
Eagles emerged victorious in Super Bowl LIX over a Kansas
City Chiefs team seeking their third Vince Lombardi trophy
in as many years. The dream of the Chiefs’ “three-peat,” is
dead—buried beneath a brutally embarrassing 40-22 final
score.
Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts put on a dominant
performance. The Eagles quarterback completed 17 of 22
passes and took big steps for 72 rushing yards, the most
ever for a quarterback in the Super Bowl. The previous
record? Mr. Jalen Hurts, in Super Bowl LVII against one Mr.
Patrick Mahomes, set the bar with 70 rushing yards.
Hurts, ever humble, gave credit to his teammates and
acknowledged his past encounter with the Chiefs in a postgame press conference.
“The last time around, it wasn’t our time, it wasn’t my time. Sometimes you have to accept that you have to wait your turn,” Hurts
said.
Once, Mahomes was a dynamic quarterback known for his ability to rise to any challenge when his back was against the wall, as he
did in Super Bowl LVII when he elevated the Chiefs over Philadelphia to a 38-35 victory. If football fans knew anything going into
this game, they knew never to count him out.
But Mahomes was out of his element Feb. 9. He looked shaky from the start, turning the ball over after a drive with just one first
down. The Eagles got the ball rolling with a quick Hurts tush push touchdown. It was all downhill from there for head coach Andy
Reid and his boys in red.
Mahomes threw two interceptions before the half, first to newly minted 22-year-old Cooper DeJean, an Eagles defensive back
younger than some members of The Spectator’s Editorial Board. After the game, DeJean told SportsCenter when he realized he
was going to take the ball all the way.
“Right when I touched it,” DeJean said.
The second interception was thrown to Eagles linebacker Zack Baun, making the score 24-0 going into halftime.
Going into the half, freshly-minted Fox Sports commentator Tom Brady reminisced about the greatest comeback in Super Bowl

history, when the New England Patriots came back from a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons. While the Chiefs hoped to
channel the same energy as a particular Patriots quarterback back in Super Bowl LI, such a comeback did not materialize.
The second half was more of the same. Mahomes was sacked twice on the first drive of the third quarter. In the subsequent quarter,
close listeners of the broadcast could hear Mahomes’ soul leave his body after a particularly nasty strip sack left him flattened and
without the ball.
The Chiefs mustered a minor offensive effort, with their first score coming late in the third quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass to
wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Still, the Eagles were flying so far ahead that there was no way to make up for the first half.
The manner in which the Chiefs lost this Super Bowl comes as poetic justice for football fans across the United States. The Chiefs’
15-2 season leading up to LIX was afflicted with snide commentary on the favorability of calls in their favor. For many, the 40-22
drubbing Kansas City received was cathartic. In the Red Kingdom, there was nothing to do but turn the TV off.
Kansas City fans, on the other hand, were united in grief after green confetti fell on the field in New Orleans. My father, a die-hard
Chiefs fan, invited friends over to watch the game and eat a variety of smoked meats as he does every year. This year, everyone left
after halftime. 
The Fox broadcast did not shy away from showing the Chiefs on the sideline, who were unable to fight the feeling of impending loss
during the game. Tight end Travis Kelce was particularly dejected, amid a middling performance and rumors that he is considering
retirement. He did not share much postgame.
“You don’t lose that bad without everything going bad,” Kelce said.
The Chiefs have some soul-searching to do in the offseason after the painful reminder that their GOAT-to-be quarterback could just
be a mortal man after all.
The euphoria of Sunday’s season-winning victory will roll on for Philadelphia Friday, Feb. 14, with the team’s victory parade.

Since the beginning of television, young adults and young adolescents alike have been objectified and hypersexualized in film and
media, especially female characters. Since the early 2000s, it’s been on the rise and there has been a lack of genuine connections
between love interests in films and a particular emphasis on sex—a lack of emotional chemistry, but a plethora of sexuality.
Currently, the Gen Z population along with myself is ready for change. 
A study conducted by UCLA in 2023 concluded that 47% of viewers ranging from ages 10-24 observed there was too much sex in
plotlines for shows and movies. There has been a push to explore more platonic relationships and genuine friendships. Aside from
the study, people are bored by “friends with benefits” and the storylines of “casual” hookups for high schoolers. 
In September, Ryan Murphy once again plagued my screen with another miniseries, Grotesquerie, a murder mystery and thriller set
in a small town on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Two of the side characters, Father Charlie Mayhew and Sister Meghan Duval,
engage in an unfathomable and deeply salacious affair. The affair, along with other deviant behaviors of the characters, is so bizarre
and unnecessary that it distracts from the storyline. My point is that plotlines oversaturated with sex corrupt the narrative and
distract from the overall story.
Today there are fewer teen flicks centered around young love and teenagers experiencing a real romance. Now there are more plots
about transactional relationships where sex is characterized as a tool or bargain, rather than intimacy for a couple. 
A movie that presents a more accurate and appropriate depiction of a healthy relationship and intimacy is Dogfight, in which a
Marine explores an unconventional romance with a waitress. As a critic, I observed that this older film has genuine language and
communication, which are often absent from the dialogue in today’s films. I also noticed a sense of respect and communication
between the characters. They put in the effort to meet their own needs while also meeting their partner’s satisfaction. In
contemporary film, there is a strong focus on the physicality of sex, while the emotional aspect is often neglected.
A bigger issue for young adolescents who are being exposed to sexually charged material is it may be clouding their judgment and
setting the tone for how lots of young adolescents view sex. Titles like Euphoria and The Politician, both have an emphasis on teens
and young adults exploring sex. Still, I didn’t see the same effort put into exploring consent and boundaries. Coming from someone
who was a teenager not long ago and had no business watching Euphoria at 15, I observed a lot of issues with the plotlines. To
elaborate, in Euphoria one of the main characters, Maddy Perez, is groomed as a teen by a 40-year-old man. It’s characterized in the
plot as socially acceptable since she “was in control,” which in retrospect, was victim blaming if I’ve ever seen it. Another plotline in
the show is the male lead and antagonist Nate Jacobs has a distorted perception of sex due to being exposed to his father’s sex
tapes at a young age. Additionally, he’s an incel who vehemently hates women, seeing them as commodities after observing his
parents’ strained and failing marriage.  
For viewers, these two characters were a lot to compartmentalize and process. A lot of viewers who thought the portrayal of the
two characters were accurate and thought Nate and Maddy were accurate portrayals of real teenagers in America. Looking back,
both characters were extremely hypersexualized and exposed to lots of trauma at the hands of their negligent parents. 
The reason this is so prominent in Hollywood and the film industry is the popular saying that “sex sells.” The statement has been
applied to a lot of characters and storylines in television, as a widespread method to sell and showcase characters in adherence to
the male gaze. In film this ideology is rooted in the perception of the male gaze, translating to a character’s identity being rooted in
their sex appeal.
Honestly, I am fed up and need to see a change yesterday. 
I am at the age where when I watch a show or movie I can tell whether or not the character was written by a woman or man
depending on how they are characterized. Are they stereotypical? Hypersexualized? Too emotional? Too withdrawn? That tells me
all I need to know.
I am not saying that we need to eradicate sex from television, but I think we need to reevaluate how it’s conveyed to prospective
audiences. Over the years there have been some advancements such as the incorporation of intimacy coordinators on sets for
shows and writers are more receptive to critique from audiences. For sex positivity to work in practice it needs to be more positive
than harmful to audiences. 
Nevertheless, Gen Z desires something else in Hollywood because the storylines are getting profoundly mediocre and have grown
to distort the minds of the current generation. The characters are flawed but also unrealistic and viewers analyzing these
characters for accuracy are in for a rude awakening. What is needed is for writers to listen to the audience when they give a critique
about the problematic storylines and to do better for their viewers. They should stop ramping up the shock value and create
characters that actually represent their audiences.

Nicola Simpson and Taylor Fitch swept the Western
Athletic Conference (WAC) weekly awards, being named
the WAC Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively.  
Simpson, a senior two-way athlete (pitcher and hitter) who
was born and raised here in Seattle, received the pitching
award after pitching a total of 16 innings in a span of three
games, Feb. 14-16, not allowing a single earned run, while
allowing just four hits, two walks, and keeping an ERA of
0.00 for four straight games (0.97 on the season). This is
Simpson’s second time receiving this award. Simpson joined
the Redhawks last year, after spending two years at the
University of Tennessee, where she helped bring the team
to the Women’s College World Series. 
Fitch, a junior third baseman from Woodinville, Wash.,
received her award after recording a batting average of
.389 this past weekend. Fitch also recorded eight hits, six of
which were extra base hits, four runs and 10 RBI’s, all in 18 at bats.  
The following is an excerpt from a Feb. 19 interview. Initials indicate the speaker.  
DD: What made you choose Seattle U? 
TF: “The biggest thing for me was, Coach Hirai called me about an hour after I entered the [transfer] portal and just told me how
much I would make an impact here and that I would be valued and that he believed in me. He also told me what I needed to do to
become a better player, which was super good to hear because not a lot of coaches would tell you that right off the bat. So I knew he
knew me as a player and that he knew he could make me better, that was a big reason.”  
NS: “I got my undergrad elsewhere and I wanted a master’s in criminal justice, which is hard to find, so I think aligning my softball
goals with also my academic goals, cause obviously softball doesn’t last forever, and so I think that led me here and I’m a homebody, I
love being with my family and being back home. And also getting to hit too, because that was something I wanted, but it’s hard when

you don’t hit for two years to then turn that page.”  
DD: How did you feel when you received your respective awards?  
TF: “I was happy. I thought I had a pretty good weekend. It’s funny because I just go back to thinking of like, when I didn’t produce
you know, but it’s good to get some perspective of like, I’m kind of doing the right thing right now, hitting people in and scoring runs.
So that was a good perspective, but I’m just excited and excited for another week.”  
NS: “Yeah, I think it’s awesome that we were able to help the team and walk away with some wins and really use that momentum
going forward. So I don’t think that changes the course for either of us. I think it’s just, put your head down and get back to work.”  
DD: Do you guys have any kind of like, game day rituals? Something you always do before a game, day of, day before?  
NS: “We eat [everyone laughs],”  
TF: “I think the only thing, I’m not superstitious, actively anti superstitious, but one thing I do, is I always have an energy drink. It’s
normally an Alani energy drink, sometimes a Red Bull, but I always have one.”  
NS: “I just have my hair done. I gotta have good hair.”  
DD: “[Laughs] Look good, play good.”  
DD: What’s your guy’s goals for the rest of the season? 
NS: “I think just taking it pitch by pitch, one pitch at a time mentality going forward. I think just being the best, most competitive
versions of ourselves every day will lead us to good outcomes and what we want to be, you know really focusing on the process and
the outcome takes care of itself.”  
TF: “Yeah, I think as a team, focusing on doing the little things right and staying hungry. We’re all really close, so with that comes a lot
accountability and when we hold each other accountable and push each other, that’s when good things happen… Personally I wanna
keep getting more RBI’s. That’s kind of my focus this year, scoring runners when they’re on, so that’s a personal goal.”  
NS: “Team-wise win the WAC.”  
TF: “Of course, of course.”  
Seattle U Softball hit the road last Friday and picked up three wins, defeating Northwestern, Long Beach State and Oregon State
with scores of 3-2, 10-8 and 7-5 respectively. The team will stay on the road for one more series, then head home March 7 to take
on Abilene Christian for the beginning of conference play.

The Seattle University men’s basketball team was down six
points with 26 seconds left in the game. This was how the
Redhawks’ last home game of the 2024-25 season would
end, with a victory over the Grand Canyon University
(GCU) Lopes just out of reach March 1.
Despite the best efforts of a hungry Redhawk squad, a win
never came. A successful 3-point play from Maleek
Arington and a layup from Paris Dawson brought the team
within one point of victory. The nine remaining seconds
were not enough to stop GCU.
Senior guard Dawson fought hard for every one of the 27
minutes he played Saturday. Dawson had few words for his
feelings after the game.
“Mixed emotions,” Dawson said. “I wanted to get the win,
but overall it was mixed emotions.”
Redshirt Junior guard John Christofilis, a steady shooter who made
one of four attempted 3-point shots, had his eyes on Nevada and the
Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament after the game.
“We competed in the second half. We held them to 26 points,”
Christofilis said. “I really truly believe that we’ll see [GCU] again in
Vegas.”
Seattle U trailed by 14 points going into the second half. Head coach
Chris Victor must have said something to inspire the team during
halftime; the team changed their tune in the second half, scoring 37
points to GCU’s 26.
The pep band packed up their instruments, fans put their university-
provided red light sticks away and Rudy (who inexplicably unveiled
his ability to perform backflips during a second half dance break) flew back to his nest. The packed student section brought the
energy for Senior Night, with five graduating Redhawks moving on at the end of this season.

Moncrieffe, Vasja Pandža and Viktor Rajkovic ́received flowers and
posed with their families before the game. Williamson, a Senior
forward, hopes to return home to Australia after graduating with a
degree in biochemistry.
“SU has been great to me for the five years that I’ve been here, so
it’s nice just hearing the fans in the stadium for one last time,”
Williamson said.
Christofilis, currently in his second season at Seattle U, echoed
Williamson’s appreciation for the support.
“It’s great to see the Redhawk faithful come out and support us. We
feed off that energy and we’re thankful that they came out to
support the seniors on the team,” Christofilis said.
Whether or not the Lopes and their voracious Seattle fans, owed to
the school’s large online education program, will return to the
Redhawk Center is up in the air. GCU announced in November that
they would not follow Seattle U to the WCC, as initially announced,
instead joining the Mountain West conference in 2026. The Lopes
hope to make the move even sooner, meaning there could be no more
conference rivalry between the two schools.
The flames of Redhawk opposition are not quite out. As Christofilis
noted, there is one last chance for a Seattle U-GCU faceoff in the
WAC with the tournament, which runs March 11-15. 
Christofilis sees Saturday’s loss as an extra push toward this final
battle.
“We’re hungrier. We have something to prove. I believe we’re going to
peak at the right time,” Christofilis said.
The last time Seattle U faced GCU at home, the boys in red were able to mount a comeback to win 86-79 in a thriller of a second
half. While conference realignment threatens the future of Lope hatred on 14th Avenue, all eyes are on the final two games against
Southern Utah and Utah Tech, as well as the WAC Tournament.
