    Get PDF
The use of antibiotic plays a major role in the emerging public health crisis of antibiotic resistance. Although, the majority of antibiotics usage occurs in animal husbandry and relatively little attention has been paid to how these antibiotics in farm animals contribute to the overall problems of antibiotics resistance in human. This research focuses on antibiotics residues in seven different most commonly consumed food samples in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria as a case study.  These food samples are: Chicken, Eggs, Cow-meat, Cheese, Goat-meat, Pork-meat and Turkey-meat. The antibiotics tested were: tetracycline, penicillin and streptomycin. The result, however, gave an inhibition zone of 8mm, 5mm, 6mm in frozen Turkey;  Nill, 5mm, 4mm in Cow-meat; Nill, Nill, 5mm in boiled Cheese; Nill, 4mm, 5mm in frozen Pork; 6mm, 7mm , 4mm in Eggs; 5mm, 4mm, 6mm in frozen Chicken and 4mm, Nill , 5mm in Goat-meat for Tetracycline, Penicillin and Streptomycin respectively. Most of the results obtained showed relatively high amount of antibiotics residues above the permissible limit of 2mm

A Mathematical Model for Weighted Multicriteria Assignment Problem: An Empirical Study

    Get PDF
Assignment is a key issue for the most planning process. It has always a big importance for the planning process. In most cases assignment is being done with more than one variable, taking in to consideration of both qualitative and quantitative variables. In this study a mathematical model for the weighted multicriteria assignment problem is developed and the results are displayed on a numerical example. The given numerical example is about to assign the faculty to the final exams of the courses. There are some constraints for the faculty according to their program. So they are given a matrix for the exams that they are available to be assigned. This study is unique that there has not been found a study with such this objective and these constraints. The problem examined is an integer programming with weighted objective to the best of my knowledge. A mathematical model is developed for the solution of this assignment problem. The effectiveness of the proposed modelis validated by its application to an empirical example dealing with weighted multiobjectiveassignment problem

Cross-Cultural Adjustment: A Study Of Indian Expatriates Working In Thailand

    Get PDF
Thailand is an emerging economy in SoutheastAsia and is seen as an attractive destination for foreigninvestment. This has led to an increasing number ofexpatriates coming on work assignments to Thailand. Moststudies on cross-cultural adjustment thus far haveemployed expatriates from western countries as sampleswhereas studies on Indian expatriates’ adjustment arelimited. The purpose of this paper is to examine crucialantecedents of cross-cultural adjustment of Indianexpatriates working in Thailand. Specifically the studyfocuses on the relationship between five independentvariables, namely, job satisfaction, family support, learning orientation, organization socialization, crossculturaltraining and the dependent variable, crossculturaladjustment. The study employed quantitativeresearch design with a self-administered questionnairesurvey to collect data from 334 Indian expatriates workingin multinational and privately-owned organizations inThailand. Pearson Correlation Coefficient and MultipleRegression as statistical tools to analyze the data from thesurvey. The findings revealed that job satisfaction is thestrongest predictor of cross-cultural adjustment of Indianexpatriates followed by family support. Organizationsemploying Indian expatriates in Thailand need to haveeffective human resource policies and practices forsocialization, communication and training so as to ensuresmoother adjustment and successful completion of theassignment on the part of these expatriates

The Energy Demand Pattern of Algeria: Review of Evolution and Sustainable Development

    Get PDF
This paper aims to analyze the Algerian energy consumption from 1965 to 2013; And to highlight the change in the structure of sources toward a sustainable development. We have relied on World Bank data, and local data that have been published by specialized institutions. It became clear that within the stability of the current production and the increase in the domestic demand in order to ensure a sustainable path of development, this situation affects, the exportations as well as the increase in energy intensity. Therefore it saliently shows the need to reconcile between supply and demand and maintain the share from natural resources for the future generations, through a persisting requirement to accelerate the process of embracing the different policies and strategies to control the use of energy

Internet of Things: The Key Enabler of Smart Cities in India

    Get PDF
India is the biggest democratic and 10th, largesteconomy in the world, even though standing 2nd position in theglobal population and 70% of GDP is coming from urbanareas, hence the Indian cities are prime concern for the nationdevelopment. In the quest for better quality of life and livingstandards, people living in rural areas are expected to move tourban locales. As this trend continues, more than half ofworld’s population is expected to make cities their place ofdwelling. To meet this massive influx of rural masses intourban areas, the cities world over need to equip themselveswith robust infrastructure. Based on these requirements, a hostof applications like, smart power generation & distribution, smart traffic management, smart waste management &utilization, smart governance, etc., are being developed. Thepaper discusses few research issues and challenges related tothe development of IT infrastructure for smart cities. Researchefforts in this direction, however, appear to be applicationcentric

Histological, Ultrastructural and Physiological Studies on the Effect of Different Kinds Of Energy Drinks on the Liver Of Wistar Albino Rat

    Get PDF
Three kinds of energy drinks (Power horse, Red bull and Code red) were used to study their histological, ultrastructural and physiological effects on Wistar albino rat liver. Forty male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 was the control, while Groups 2, 3 and 4 were each orally administered with a type of the energy drinks daily for 4 weeks. After two and four weeks of treatment, five animals from each group were killed and dissected. The liver was removed, cut and fixed quickly to carry out light and electron microscopic preparations. Blood samples were collected from each rat via Cardiac puncture method for enzyme determination. The histopathological and ultrastructural results indicated mild hepatotoxicity of Power horse, Red bull and Code red. The alterations in liver ultrastructure were almost similar to each other; however the necrotic areas and the pyknotic nuclei were more obvious in Power horse and Red bull than that of Code red. Moreover, the present study showed that the energy drinks induced an elevation of liver enzymes AST, ALT and ALP after two and four weeks of treatment. The data illustrated that power horse was more effective in its action on liver enzymes, followed by red bull and to less extend code red. The different action of the energy drinks on liver function could be attributed to the different mixture of their ingredients

Food Security in the United Arab Emirates (UAE): The Great Competition between the Agricultural and Forestry Sector on Irrigation Resources

    Get PDF
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country that has scarcity in fresh water resources. Groundwater, which contributes to 70% of the total water resources in the country, is a non-renewable water resource. This resource plays significant role in converting the desert to a green paradise. It covers around 95% and 82% of the watering requirements of the agricultural and forestry sector, respectively. Besides the critical problems that this resource suffers from; including depletion, saline water intrusion and contamination. It has also a limited life time expectancy, estimated to be between 16 to 36 years. The total annual water withdrawal by the green sector in the country is estimated to be above 2198 million m3, from which above 32% is used to cover the irrigation requirements for the forestry sector and landscaping, while the rest amount is used for crop production purposes. The great competition between the two sectors, lead to make the sustainability approach in maintaining both sectors extremely difficult, especially with the absence of groundwater supply and the sharp population growth. Therefore, serious and quick actions have to take place; in order to save the future of food security in the UAE

    Get PDF
This article aims to describe the situation of corporate governance act in Jordan within the international principles of corporate governance. The subject of governance received limited attention, especially at the local level, while most attempts have focused in the past on the private sector, in order to encourage governance act policies and procedures must be developed to stimulate positive behavior consistent with the ethics and values of integrity of the institution of government that are drawn policies and procedures. This should lead to encourage the staff and public sector officials to exercise behavior commensurate with the ethics and values of the public sector. Moreover it is important and necessary to achieve access to behavior consistent with the values of morality and integrity. The results reveal that there is a lack of governance practice due to social and culture of governance. The study recommended developing and enforcing clear lines of accountability and the responsibility of people to upload their work and motivate them to perform properly. This is considered as a code of rules and behavior which is an important tool in career that promotes the values of integrity

    Get PDF
The effect of varying temperatures was investigated on the integrity of glue line and compressive strength parallel to grain for glue laminated Funtumia Africana (Ire) timber laminated with polyvinyl acetate glue. The performance of the glue line was investigated over temperatures of 0oC, 30oC, 40 oC, 50oC, 70oC, and 100oC administered to test samples over a period of 4 hours. The strength values were computed at an average moisture content of 5.6%. A mean compressive strength of 34.4 N/mm2 was recorded at 0oC while a rise to 41.2N/mm2 was recorded for 30oC. However subsequent decreases in mean compressive strength were recorded with increasing temperature from 30 oC to 100 oC. The highest and least mean compressive strength of 41.2N/mm2 and 24.4N/mm2 was recorded at 30 and 100oC respectively. The failure modes were similar over the various temperatures except for a brittle failure of both glue line and timber recorded at 0 oC due to extremely low temperature
