Oral infections can act as the site of origin for dissemination of periodonto-bacteria and their toxins as well as induce inflammatory mechanisms to distant body sites, thus linking periodontal diseases to pre-term delivery of low birth weight (PLBW) infants. Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. Researchers showed that between 18 and 50 % of all pre-term deliveries are associated with periodontal disease. Porphyromonasgingivalis, Treponema denticola and Tannerella forsythia are among the subgingival microflora most frequently associated with periodontal disease. The presence of these bacteria can be identified by their ability to hydrolyse BANA. BANA is a rapid and effective diagnostic aid shown to correlate well with the clinical indices used to diagnose periodontal disease. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the presence of member of the red complex (BANA positive species) in subgingival plaque and pre-term delivery of low birth weight in a Rwandan population. Three clinical indices (PI,GI and PD) were measured for each patient. Plaque sample were collected by inserting a sterile probe into the base of the pocket and this served for the measurement of the BANA enzyme test. The age of the population study was between 18 and 47 years with a mean of 30.8(+or-5.34). Among the 450 women examined, 57.1 % had a PI score of 2, 56.0 % had GI score of 2 and 89.6 % had a PD between 4-6 mm. At a level of 5%, a significant association of p-value=0.000 was found between PI vs BANA, GI vs BANA and PD vs BANA. No significant association (p-value=0.073) was found between BANA and mothers who delivered preterm of low birth weight (PLBW). In conclusion, findings of this study showed that BANA cannot be used for now as screening test for mother at risk for preterm delivery, while waiting for a multicenter study which will help to verify the cause of these discrepancies of results. In the other hand we can recommend BANA to be used as a routine test for the detection of periodontal disease due it strong relationship with clinical indices used to diagnose periodontal disease

Various games and activities of students can be used as an effective tool in the development of mental capacities, skills and intelligence games. Intelligence games are games that have all kinds of problems, including real problems. So it is a good tool to teach problem solving. The course of intelligence games will enable students to develop capacity for problem perception and assessment, to create different perspectives, to be able to make quick and correct decisions when they encounter problems, to develop a problem-solving and problem-solving habit, and to use reasoning and logic effectively. Therefore, it is appropriate to use a stepwise teaching approach to teaching mental games. In the middle school the course of intelligence games teaching program, learning areas are divided into 6 categories according to game categories: Reason Execution and Transaction Games, Verbal Games, Geometric - Mechanics Games, Strategy Games, Memory Games and Intelligence Questions [1]. The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of the course of intelligence games on the mathematics attitudes of Grade 5 students. Research was conducted in the 5th Grade of a private school in Antalya province. The experimental part of the research is comprised of the effects of the course of intelligence on students’ mathematics attitudes. This part of the research is conducted by the pretest-post-test control group design. Of two equal classes, one group is randomly assigned to be the experimental group and the other the control group; pre-test and post-test measurements were carried out in both groups. Experimental design with control group was used in the research. Mathematics attitude scale was used as pre-test and post-test in the research. In the analysis of the data, t test was used to compare the pretest and posttest scores. Between the pretest and the posttest, the lectures in the experimental group were carried out during the education period, including 2 hours per week. The lessons are supported each week by different activities of mental games. In the control group, teaching was done according to the current curriculum. To determine whether there is a meaningful difference between pre-test and post-test scores of experiment and control groups, analyzes were tried to determine the effect of mental games on math attitude. According to the results of the analysis, it was found that the students in the experimental and control groups had a significant difference between their pre-test scores and post-test scores within the mathematics attitude scale

Abstract--The main objectives of this research were focused on extracting nickel ions from waste water using emulsion liquid membrane as well as determining the optimal conditions for the extraction process. Taguchi experimental design method was applied to determine the optimum extraction conditions. The controllable factors of the emulsion liquid membrane process were carrier; surfactant; and internal phase concentration, treating ratio, stirring time, and feed phase acidity were optimized. The contribution of each controllable factor was also explored. The results indicated the greatest effect of the carrier concentration in comparison to other parameters. The five other parameters slightly affected the extraction percentage of nickel. The optimum conditions for the extraction was found to be carrier concentration (M) of 0.25, surfactant concentration (v %) of 10, internal phase concentration (M) of 0.1, external / emulsion ratio (v/v) of 5, stirring time (min.) of 1, and feed phase pH of 0.5

Alternative Solutions for Data Storage Using Magnetic Films Exchange-Coupled Through Non-Magnetic Layer

    Get PDF
We describe an alternative solution to encode information in magnetic films that goes beyond the conventional way of digital magnetic recording. In our approach the information is stored via a continuous variable, namely the remanent coupling angle between two magnetic films that are separated by a nonmagnetic spacer layer. Using the technique of nuclear resonant scattering (NRS) [1, 2] we show with good precision, how this coupling angle can be conveniently adjusted with high degree of remanence by shortly applied external magnetic fields. Moreover this effect is explained using a micromagnetic model [3, 4]. Extremely important for future applications of this concept, we demonstrate, that the remanent coupling angles can be read out via magneto-optical or magneto-resistance effects. In principle, this approach allows to design novel memory cells for advance data storage devices, where multiple states per unit cell can be generated and recorded

Cooperative Coevolution with Dynamic Species-Size Strategy for Vibration-Based Damage Detection in Plates

    Get PDF
Vibration-based damage detection is based on the fact that vibration characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes of structures are changed when the damage occurs. This paper proposes dynamic species-size strategy in cooperative coevolution concept. The resulting algorithm, cooperative coevolutionary genetic algorithm with dynamics species-size (CCGADSS), is used as the optimization algorithm in the vibration-based damage detection in plates. The objective function is numerically calculated from the difference between experimentally vibration characteristics and numerically evaluated vibration characteristics of the predicted damage. In finite element model for objective calculation, the plates are equally divided into 64 elements. There are 2 different cases with dissimilar occurred damage in plates are considered. In first case, the plate hase only one region consisting of 4 elements which are together connected and have same damage. In second case, there are 5 separated elements which are damaged differently. In order to demonstrate the performance of the dynamic species-size strategy, 3 optimization algorithms, which are genetic algorithm (GA), cooperative coevolutionary genetic algorithm (CCGA), and CCGADSS. The results indicate that CCGADSS is superior to GA and CCGA. Moreover solutions obtained using CCGADSS are quite close the actual damage. These results show that the dynamic species-size strategy can enhance performance of cooperative coevolution concept

    Get PDF
This paper is devoted to the classification of e-learning and its main criterion: synchronicity and asynchrony of student-teacher interaction. The necessity to change the educational process is considered in order to ensure its compliance with the requirements of the modern information-oriented society. Opinions of e-learning classification are presented. Specific features of classification at time factor are discussed. Concept representations of synchronous and asynchronous learning are given; an example of holding one and the same seminar for different types of learning is cited. Positive and negative sides for each seminar are shown. The concept of "space" is introduced to the systems of time-based e-learning classification. A different view is presented on the classification of e-learning technologies, to a greater extent having an engineering approach and based on computer technologies and communication techniques. On the basis of the combinations of the concepts "time" and "space", the quadrants time and space dependent / in dependent are formed. The main advantage of this classification is the coverage of all e-learning tools. Rendering of such symbiosis is given. The influence of individual and group sessions on the classification model at time factor is reviewed and analyzed. Based on this analysis, the teacher can choose his own scenario of conducting classes

Making a Case for Informal Participation in Occupational Safety and Health Management

    Get PDF
Abstract-A myriad of research have listed organisational commitment, reduced employee turnover, increased productivity amongst others, as some of the benefits of employee participation in management. Some studies on employee participation, however, indicates that, employees are generally reluctant to use formal avenues created for them to contribute to management. This is especially so because management mostly uses such formal avenues for a top-down information transfer. Also, employees have the fear of being victimised if they raise issuesof concern thatboarders on the use of finance or on something they assume may be offending to management during such meetings.  In Ghana, the high annual accident and injury claims made by employees from the manufacturing industry requires urgent action by manufacturing organisations. Legislature on occupational safety and health (OSH) is scattered, with different oversight agencies, inadequate enforcement, and the absence of laws that require the establishment of a health and safety committee which is standard practice in mostdeveloped jurisdictions. In the light of the weak OSH legal and regulatory framework, coupled with the fact that employees feel reluctant to report their safety predicaments during formal meetings, it is important that management and employees create the necessary environment for employees to participate in safety management. Indeed, studies suggest that the existence of such informal avenues in organisations for employee participation in management decision making will enable open discussions on employee safety issues and therefore lead to the prioritisation of OSH in those organisations. Nevertheless, research indicates that informal participation has received little research attention especially with regards to Ghana. This study makes a case for the use of informal participation in ensuring safety in manufacturing companies in Ghana
