    History of Technology: An Area of Growth in Design Education II

    The first of these articles (in Studies in Design Education and Craft No.1 0.2 Spring 78) presented the case for majority education in technology through the medium of History of Technology; it was also shown that recent developments in examination syllabuses, at Ordinary, Advanced, and OND levels, offer wide opportunity for craft, design, and history, teachers to broaden their teaching into an area of direct relevance to contemporary technological society. History of Technology, as well as offering a comprehensible, nonquantitative, introduction to the fundamentals of design processes, also provides the key to technology education for the majority of pupils, without restriction to those with special aptitudes in numeracy or craft skills.Over the last 8 or 9 years we have explored, in the Education Department at Keele, a variety of approaches to technology education for teachers - both in training and in service - and, as quoted in the previous article, have found that History of Technology has proved itself the most popular with all the classes 9f students to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Department, and has proved itself an asset to teachers seeking employment or promotion

    In January 1984 Nottinghamshire's Curriculum Development Support Service (CDSS) launched a two-year project to support Craft Design and Technology (CDT) developments in Primary schools. Now, at the end of this initiative, much has been learned about the role CDT can play in the education of children at primary school. The CDT primary pilot project was initiated by the County Advisory and Inspection Service in partnership with the CDSS and responded to enquiries from schools throughout the County

    An Approach to Developing Creativity in the Field of Craft, Design and Technology Through Small Groups

    Attempting to identify the separate components of the creative process creates an artifical atmosphere not immediately recognised by the classroom teacher in the workshop, as being of relevance to their job. And yet these components are essentially what is required. The ";sensitivity to all areas of experience"; and ";the quality of being critical of ones products"; are what is being demanded by teachers of C.D.T. (Whether or not they are recognised when achieved is another matter). What is obviously of value and coincidently what can be relatively easily recognised, is that of fluidity. The quality of ideas generated create an atmosphere which enables the qualitive aspects of the work to be enhanced. In other words if you have more ideas to choose from there is a greater relevance to the problem in hand. If we can therefore take these and similar ideas from within the realms of psychological tests into the workshop and classroom and attempt to identify those traits which occur as part of the everyday work of our pupils we may help to promote a fuller understanding of the development of creativity in the practical situation of the school. 1 am convinced that other aspects of creativity, such as originality, flexibility and elaboration could all be identified in the normal conversation of our pupils directed towards specific tasks. This research is therefore based primarily on the analysis of audio tapes recorded during a period of problem solving based in the workshop during a C.D.T. lesson. Following on from earlier work I decided to try a change in methodology and substitute some small group work instead of the chalk and talk methods employed previously. In my earlier work I analysed a lesson which was in two parts. In the first part I was aiming at the introduction of a project by talking to the group as a whole. In the second part of the lesson the pupils were working at a drawing board and I was discussing their work with them in a one to one relationship

    Design Education for Laypeople

    Traditionally, design education has been aimed at preparing students for a specialist role in one of the design professions. But if design education is to be made available more widely, perhaps to everyone, then it must have very different aims. It will need to be a general education in design for laypeople, not a specialist education for design professionals. In discussing design education for laypeople, therefore, I assume that we must mean something other than merely a wider provision of specialist education. I assume that we might want to question the relevance of specialist education, that we might want to consider alternatives to specialist education, that we might want to enable people who are specifically non-specialists to become involved in critical decision-making in the design process, and that we might even want to provide some form of counter-courses that will enable these non-specialists to challenge designers (and their clients) as to the validity of their decisions. Beyond this specialist vs. non-specialist dichotomy, we may also wan t to ask if there cannot be a new pattern of educational provision that does not perpetuate this 'us' and 'them' fragmentation of society; perhaps rather as the 'barefoot doctors' and other social experiments in China have been aimed at breaking down class and specialism barriers
