    The development of a technology short course in South Africa

    In January 1994 a non-government organisation (NGO) in South Africa began to develop a technology course for secondary school pupils in South Africa. The course was originally intended as an enrichment course for pupils on an extra-curricular Saturday school programme. It was to be delivered to pupils in senior secondary school as a first introduction to technology. It soon became apparent that there was significant interest in implementing the course in schools. There was also·a willingness by industry and by the ministers of education in the new South Africa to support a move into schools. This article will discuss the development of the course framework and highlight some of the aspects affecting technology in South African schools

    Teacher Recruitment in Design and Technology: Food Technology

    This paper presents an update of the findings of a research project carried out by the National Association of Teachers of Home Economics and Technology ( ATHE) in the spring of 1998. The research explored a perceived national shortage of teachers available to teach food and textiles technology within design and technology. The findings were presented and published in 1999 as a paper at the International Conference on Design and Technology Educational Research and Curriculum Development (Rutland, IDATER 1999). This paper focuses on food technology as the problem is considered to be particularly severe in this specialism of design and technology. A number of issues appeared to be relevant, including changes in the traditional routes into secondary teaching, a change of focus in some degree courses, the introduction of National Curriculum design and technology in 1990 and regional differences in teacher shortages.     Information and communications technology (lCT) dominates many aspects of most companies and plays a significant role in education, or at least has significant resources focused on it. No one doubts the growing influence of ICT in the world, however our education system has made little significant effort to educate young people in the basic skills that under pin ICT. At the core of ICT systems is electronic communications and at last there is now an ambitious attempt to address the need for educating a significantly larger number of young people in ECT to develop, service and maintain the increasingly complex electronic highways which this country needs.     The Sustainable Design Award: Supporting 16 plus Students in Addressing Sustainable Design Issues

    This paper outlines a new award scheme currently being trialled in nine schools in England and Wales with AS and A2 design and technology students and discusses some early feedback. The scheme’s fundamental aim is to integrate thinking about sustainability into advanced level work. Students who show they have thought through sustainability issues at each stage of their coursework option will be given an award. The scheme is designed to provide students with ideas for devising design briefs and specifications from genuine, real life contexts from around the world. It is backed by a number of different organisations which will give back-up information and feedback to students throughout their AS and A2 coursework. Teachers in the pilot schools have access to a sustainability pack that helps both them and their students to tackle fundamental issues of sustainability such as reducing, recycling and reusing. The scheme is currently funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) with in-kind support from other organisations, including DATA. Over 70 schools have expressed an interest in becoming involved in the Sustainable Design Award (SDA) scheme in 2003/4

    This article describes a joint project between primary and secondary school pupils aimed at enhancing social skills as well as technological understanding and introducing children to industrial strategies such as batch production. The appraisal of this programme was undertaken through observation in both primary and secondary schools, interviews with teachers and pupils and an analysis of documentary materials.The Council for Industry and Higher education has recently defined the long term needs of employers. In addition to flexibility and adaptability, what employers will look for in their graduate recruits will be English language competence, foreign language skills, numeracy, data appreciation, teamwork the ability to tackle unfamiliar problems and the desire to continue to learn.(National Commission on Education,1993: p. 302

    Too often discussions on curriculum development fail to examine underlying assumptions about the nature of education, the identity of design and technology as a 'subject', and its place in the whole school curriculum.' Even our National Curriculum document offers no rationale behind the statutory order2 Indeed there is a danger that design and technology teachers simply do not have time to reflect.3 The DATA consultative paper4 provided a valuable framework for discussion. The present article reports on a workshop at the 1998 DATA Conference.
