    Get PDF
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) commissioned the Scottish Council for Research in Education to review the literature on the impact of Design and Technology (D&T) in schools. Much has been written about the subject of D&T by the community of practice, but little research-based evidence has emerged from the review

    No Bits - No Nothing

This article is extracted from a longer piece of work commissioned by QCA during the National Curriculum Review to consider the place of ICT in design and technology 2000.Children growing up in a society which is comprehensively dependent on technology and technologically developed products, will be profoundly adrift and alienated from the nature of that society unless they have some insights into where products, on which their life depend, come from, why and how they come into being. This short article considers the influence of information and communication technology on three aspects of design and technology - modelling, manufacture and control and communications and provides a rationale for the inclusion of ICT (information and communication technology) in the design and technology curriculum

The aim of this short article is to put into perspective my own thoughts on assessment methods used within a Special Educational Needs (SEN) design and technology department. Please don't stop reading if you don't teach in a special needs environment, as I think there are many relevant issues that need to be aired. I do not consider myself an expert in the field of assessment - I have read what seem to be hundreds of publications from a variety of sources - therefore the following is a basis to start discussion and by no means a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe
