Art and Design in Integrated Studies
Get PDFA group of children and a group of teachers working and learning together; ideally, this is team-teaching and Integrated Studies. Over the past eight years this school, a five-form entry with twenty-three per cent of the age group 'creamed' to a local Grammar school, has been evolving an integrated course for the fourth and fifth year students. The course was begun in 1967 with the raising of the school leaving age in mind. Two interested teachers who were special ists in Science and Art but who were also interested in the history and geography of the local environment, were approached by the Headmaster and ideas began to flow. Boys and girls were invited to take part on the one whole day allocated for the course. We planned visits, and studying local history and geography, we used this information as an academic catalyst to create wall-hangings, sculpture and experimental mosaics using stained glass, stones and fl ints. Visits to Fishbourne Roman Palace inspired a wall mural (12' x 8') made from clay mosa ics of different textures and sizes, showing the landing of the Normans, the Battle of Hastings and King William on the throne. This mosaic mural took a year to make and about forty boys and girls took part in the work, planning the picture on the wall in sections. Visiting a local Roman Catholic church to see their stained glass windows led to a visit to a stained glass studio and eventually a visit to the Whitefriars Glassworks, and then to buying a tea chest full of stained glass cullet and experimental work on another wall. Get PDFIt may seem a little strange to readers of this magazine that an exhibition of design studies from schools should be regarded in anyway as unusual. Most of us perhaps are well aware that they are being found more frequently in schools and have been given the accolade of acceptance by various Examination Boards. Certainly those readers who are members of professional bodies such as NADE or ElDCT (Institute of Craft Education) may be inclined to feel that such a show no longer needs justification as a valid aspect of educational concern, and would be perhaps more concerned as to whether the quality and content of the exhibits, fulfils the description of 'Design'
An Evaluation in the Use of Internet-Based Instructional Resources and MLE in Support of the Teaching and Learning of CAD/CAM
Get PDFThis work provides an account and evaluation of the development and integration of internetbased instructional resources and a Managed Learning Environment. They were used to enhance the teaching and learning of computeraided engineering applications in support of engineering undergraduate courses. They provide detailed instruction in the design of 3- Dimensional engineering part-models. The user is guided through creation, analysis of the structural integrity and subsequent planning of the process operations required to manufacture such part-models. Additional internet-based learning resources, in the form of selfassessment tutorials and quizzes, were developed to enable the students to gauge student understanding at staged points throughout the tutorial and laboratory sessions. Moreover, this work describes strategies used to encourage the use of the Managed Learning Environment along with the internet-based tutorials. It outlines an evaluation of the Managed Learning Environment by the students with a view toward setting this cohort’s skills in context via an evaluation over a two year period since its implementation.Key Words: Managed Learning Environment, Evaluation, Computer-Aided Engineering
