An Investigation into Teacher Wellbeing During the Teacher Training Year
For those studying for the Post Graduate Certificate in
Education (PGCE), the teaching practice placement can
be a daunting experience. Trainee teachers have to adjust
into a new workplace and a complicated professional
role which can be stressful; this can result in teachers
leaving the profession in their early years if they do not
equip themselves with coping strategies and display
resilient behaviour.
The aims of this study were to gain a deeper
understanding of how a cohort of science and design
and technology PGCE students settled into schools on
their teaching placement and to investigate any
differences between mature trainees (those who had
taken at least one gap year after their undergraduate
degree) and those who have continued straight through
their education. Two questionnaires (pre n= 42; post
n=48) and a voluntary interview (n=7) were used.
Many trainees described their experience as rewarding,
yet exhausting and challenging. However, the interviews
highlighted there was some erosion of their personal
‘self’ at this early stage of their career. This resulted in,
for example, changes in their sleep, eating and exercise
patterns and an impact on their relationships
The Global Studio: Linking Research, Teaching and Learning
At its most basic The Global Studio: Linking Research,
Teaching and Learning documents a course that brings
together design students from three universities
(Northumbria and Napier Universities in the UK and TU
Delft in the Netherlands) to collaborate on a product
design project. This book is a much richer resource
though; it records an ambitious and challenging project
that explores areas as important as design education,
cultural communities, changing design practice and new
design technologies, processes and research methods

Active and reflective learning initiatives to improve web searching skills of business students
This article discusses the development and impact of an information literacy (IL) collaborative initiative undertaken by a module leader and library staff at Sheffield Business School (at Sheffield Hallam University) to improve business students' web searching skills, in order to support their academic work and develop the IL skills required by future employers. It considers the use of a range of interactive learning activities in a lecture setting - not the preferred setting for information skills - coupled with a web-based research assessment and student reflection on the development of their web searching skills. Student feedback and reflective practice is reviewed and ways of further developing activities to address student feedback and promote further student engagement are suggested
Dear Minister, This is why design and technology is a very important subject in the school curriculum
The paper is in four parts. Part 1 considers the justification
for including design and technology in the school
curriculum. Part 2 suggests the content for the subject at
Key Stage 3. Part 3 describes some of the ways the
subject might be taught. Part 4 considers ways in which
the curriculum can be devised so that it is irresistible and
transformative. A brief conclusion revisits the unique
characteristic of the subject
