The Distinctive Use of the Oboe and English Horn in Several American Classical Composers, including Charles Ives and Aaron Copland
Get PDFapplication/pdfIn this paper, the author conducted a detailed examination of the distinctive use of oboe and English horn in the works of two prominent American classical composers, Charles Ives and Aaron Copland. As a result, it became evident that the oboe and English horn are employed very frequently compared to other instruments. This is attributed to Ives incorporating influences from American folk and religious music and adopting a unique approach to constructing his musical language using instruments such as the oboe and English horn. On the other hand, Copland expressed the expansive landscapes and emotions of America through the oboe and English horn.
Many previous studies have been conducted from the perspective of how oboe and English horn are used in the orchestra as a whole, in relation to composers and their works. However, there are few studies that focus on oboe and English horn, such as this study. The results of this study are beneficial not only to oboe and English horn performers, but also to classical music performers in general.
