Extending Tokizaki’s (2016) OCP-based Analysis: From Dvandva Compounds to Path Expressions

    No full text
Tokizaki (2016) argues that the low frequency level of dvandva compounds in English and West European languages is due to the fact that these languages have word stress, which would give rise to the violation of “Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) (stress)” in dvandva compounds. This paper, focusing on the prosody of compounds in English and Japanese, argues that Tokizaki’s OCP-based analysis of dvandva compounds naturally extends to other related phenomena involving a kind of coordination without a coordinator (i.e. asyndeton coordination), such as varieties of path expressions (Hirose 2007, Shiobara 2022, 2024).journal articl
