Verwendung von Hover Detection zur Verbesserung der Texteingabe auf Smartphones
Interaction with smartphones can be challenging for some users, especially with regards to text entry. In these handheld devices the available screen space limits the size of the user interfaces elements. This problem is excerbated when a lot of UI elements has to be displayed simultaneously, for example in a on-screen keyboard. Especially users with limitations like decreased vision or motor control can have a hard time using these devices, effectively excluding them from a part of modern social life. In this work we evaluated if hover detection can be used to improve usability for text entry on a smartphone. In several experiments the position of the hovering finger was used to selectively enlarge the UI, to provide visual location feedback on the keyboard or to offer audio assistance. When testing with elderly users, the visual feedback was positively received. Unfortunately the comparatively high latency of the hover detection (about 250 ms) negated any gains in usability. This result was confirmed in tests with young users, who also did not benefit from the hover detection. Most usability gains for elderly users were made by introducing a keyboard layout with larger keys which stayed at that size, regardless of hover position. Visually impaired users liked the idea of a context sensitive magnification as well, but hover detection was not really usable to its inherent lack of haptic feedback. Acoustic feedback did not produce a better user experience for the same reason. Reliable use of hover detection was just not possible without adequate levels of vision. This research showed that assistive technologies on smartphones like selective magnification of the user interface can help users, but only when technical parameters are sufficient for the input process. In this case hover detection allowed us to implement visual, haptic and audio feedback based on the hover position of the finger as a proof of concept. Unfortunately high latency only allowed us to show qualitative improvement, not quantitive. Further improvements in hover detection hardware may make this research relevant again, though
Cognitive Reasoning for Compliant Robot Manipulation
Physically compliant contact is a major element for many tasks in everyday environments. A universal service robot that is utilized to collect leaves in a park, polish a workpiece, or clean solar panels requires the cognition and manipulation capabilities to facilitate such compliant interaction. Evolution equipped humans with advanced mental abilities to envision physical contact situations and their resulting outcome, dexterous motor skills to perform the actions accordingly, as well as a sense of quality to rate the outcome of the task. In order to achieve human-like performance, a robot must provide the necessary methods to represent, plan, execute, and interpret compliant manipulation tasks. This dissertation covers those four steps of reasoning in the concept of intelligent physical compliance. The contributions advance the capabilities of service robots by combining artificial intelligence reasoning methods and control strategies for compliant manipulation. A classification of manipulation tasks is conducted to identify the central research questions of the addressed topic. Novel representations are derived to describe the properties of physical interaction. Special attention is given to wiping tasks which are predominant in everyday environments. It is investigated how symbolic task descriptions can be translated into meaningful robot commands. A particle distribution model is used to plan goal-oriented wiping actions and predict the quality according to the anticipated result. The planned tool motions are converted into the joint space of the humanoid robot Rollin' Justin to perform the tasks in the real world. In order to execute the motions in a physically compliant fashion, a hierarchical whole-body impedance controller is integrated into the framework. The controller is automatically parameterized with respect to the requirements of the particular task. Haptic feedback is utilized to infer contact and interpret the performance semantically. Finally, the robot is able to compensate for possible disturbances as it plans additional recovery motions while effectively closing the cognitive control loop. Among others, the developed concept is applied in an actual space robotics mission, in which an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) commands Rollin' Justin to maintain a Martian solar panel farm in a mock-up environment. This application demonstrates the far-reaching impact of the proposed approach and the associated opportunities that emerge with the availability of cognition-enabled service robots
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Methods for Characterization of Mass Transport in Porous Materials
Spatially resolved Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques can measure the mass transport processes in opaque porous materials, and thus may play an important role in better understanding the mechanisms underlying the corresponding dynamic processes. This might help improving the designs of heterogeneous systems. However, these applications are challenging due to the non-negligible magnetic field inhomogeneities in porous structures, the significant signal decay by transversal relaxation of magnetization, the demand for high spatial resolution and adequate temporal resolution, as well as additional drawbacks in specific applications like low NMR sensitivity in gas measurements. In this work, spatially resolved NMR methods were improved and optimized to mitigate these limitations for studies on drying, slow liquid flow, and gas flow in porous materials. The proposed methods, by which NMR images with a desired image contrast like spin density or velocity can be obtained, will support quantitative research on mass transport in porous materials and are also of interest for further applications
Physical-Layer Cooperation in Coded OFDM Relaying Systems
Mobile communication systems nowadays require ever-increasing data rate and coverage of wide areas. One promising approach to achieve this goal is the application of cooperative communications enabled by introducing intermediate nodes known as relays to support the transmission between terminals. By processing and forwarding the receive message at the relays, the path-loss effect between the source and the destination is mitigated. One major limit factor for relay assisted communications is that a relay cannot transmit and receive using the same physical resources. Therefore, a half-duplex constraint is commonly assumed resulting in halved spectral efficiency. To combat this drawback, two-way relaying is introduced, where two sources exchange information with each. On the other hand, due to the physical limitation of the relays, e.g., wireless sensor nodes, it's not possible to implement multiple antennas at one relay, which prohibits the application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. However, when treating multiple relays as a cluster, a virtual antenna array is formed to perform MIMO techniques in a distributed manner. %This thesis aims at designing efficient one-way and two-way relaying schemes. Specifically, existing schemes from the literature are improved and new schemes are developed with the emphasis on coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions. Of special interest is the application of physical-layer network coding (PLNC) for two-phase two-way relaying. In this case, a network coded message is estimated from the superimposed receive signal at the relay using PLNC schemes. The schemes are investigated based on a mutual information analysis and their performance are improved by a newly proposed phase control strategy. Furthermore, performance degradation due to system asynchrony is mitigated depending on different PLNC schemes. When multiple relays are available, novel cooperation schemes allowing information exchange within the relay cluster are proposed that facilitate distributed MIMO reception and transmission. Additionally, smart signaling approaches are presented to enable the cooperation at different levels with the cooperation overhead taken into account adequately in system performance evaluation
Personal State and Emotion Monitoring by Wearable Computing and Machine Learning
One of the major scientific undertakings over the past few years has been exploring the interaction between humans and machines in mobile environments. Wearable computers, embedded in clothing or seamlessly integrated into everyday devices, have an incredible advantage to become the main gateway to personal health management. Current state of the art devices are capable in monitoring basic physical or physiological parameters. Traditional health systems procedures depend on the physical presence of the patient and a medical specialist that not only is a reason of overall costs but also reduces the quality of patients' lives, particularly elderly patients. Usually, patients have to go through the following steps for the traditional procedure: Firstly, patients need to visit the clinic, get registered at reception, wait for the turn, go to the lab for the physiological measurement, wait for the medical experts call, to finally receive feedback from the medical expert. In this work, we examined how to utilize existing technology in order to develop an e-health monitoring system especially for heart patients. This system should support the interaction between the patient and the physician even when the patient is not in the clinic. The supporting wearable health monitoring system WHMS should recognize physical activities, emotional states and transmit this information to the physician along with relevant physiological data; in this way patients do not need to visit the clinic every time for the physician's feed-back. After the discussion with medical experts, we identified relevant physical activities, emotional states and physiological data needed for the patients' examinations. A prototype of this concept for a health monitoring system of the proposed solution was implemented taking into account physical activities, emotional states and physiological data
This study investigates the life situation of lesbian women and gay men in need of care in stationary or outpatient geriatric care based on qualitative interviews with affected persons as well as healthcare professionals. These interviews were evaluated by means of the methodology of Grounded Theory (GT). Based on empirical data a theory of the recognition of homosexualities in geriatric care was generated, its pioneering basic research should set new standards in future subject and lived body orientated (nursing) care for homosexual persons in need of care. It should bring ground-braking changes in the care of other minorities as well. The study shows how experiencing emotional attention, legal equalisation and social esteem improve the wellbeing and social integration of homosexual persons in need of care. It also shows that the absence of one or more forms of recognition can be damaging to peoplea s self-reference (identity) and also lead to social isolation
