    Assessing chemical diversity in essential oil compositions of Mint (Mentha spp.) cultivars and clones using Multivariate analysis

    The morphological characteristics and chemical composition of plants are shaped by a combination of genetic factors and environmental influences. In particular, plants are continual pressure for variation due to environmental stresses and hybridization. The study aims to assess the chemodiversity among cultivars and clones of Mentha species cultivated under same climatic and soil conditions. The essential oil compositions of 83 samples, representing 11 different Mentha species, were analyzed with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Chemical profiles were classified using multivariate analysis techniques, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), and Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD). The results reveal that, despite inter-and intraspecific hybridization in Mentha species, similar chemotypes were observed across different species. Conversely, within the same species, chemotype diversity was present. Centroid clustering also demonstrated that closely related mint species tended to cluster together locally. The analysis identified 16 different chemical groups (chemotypes) among the 83 mint samples studied. Of these 83 samples, 31 were found to be rich in carvone, ranging from 36.4% to 77.7%. In addition to commercial chemotypes such as menthol and menthol/menthone, rare chemotypes were identified, suggesting their potential significance for taxonomic classification. Additionally, the identification of chemotypes containing compounds with newly recognized physiological significance highlights the need to cultivate chemotypes rich in these compounds to meet the growing demands of the industry. Overall, this study sheds light on the chemodiversity within Mentha species and underscores the importance of understanding and harnessing this diversity for various applications. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

    Evaluation of parenchymal collaterals in patients with meningioma using contrast-enhanced T1 MPRAGE sequence

    Background: Post-contrast T1-MPRAGE sequence has been used in routine tumor imaging at many centers for decades. Meningiomas may be accompanied by leptomeningeal as well as parenchymal collaterals. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the collaterals that may accompany meningiomas on postcontrast T1-MPRAGE imaging and to investigate their relationship with location, size, histologic features, adjacent bone, and parenchymal changes. Methods: In this study, postcontrast T1-MPRAGE images of 326 meningiomas from 259 patients were independently analyzed by two observers. The presence of parenchymal collaterals and unilateral, contralateral or bilateral localization were determined. Meningiomas' diameters, locations, presence of dural sinus invasion, associated parenchymal changes and bony changes were determined. Histologic grades were determined if applicable. The data obtained were analyzed statistically. Results: Parenchymal collaterals were demonstrated in 25% of meningiomas (66/259). Of these, 65% were unilateral, 12% contralateral and 23% bilateral. There was a significant correlation between malignancy and the presence of collaterals in histologically diagnosed meningiomas (77%, p = 0.01). The presence of collaterals was also significantly higher in meningiomas with sinus invasion and bone destruction (p < 0.001). As tumor size increased, unilateral and bilateral collateral development increased (p < 0.001, p = 0.008, respectively), but it was not significant in contralateral cases. There was significant concordance between the observers in terms of the presence of collaterals (kappa: 0.773). Conclusions: Meningiomas may be accompanied by parenchymal collaterals. WHO grade 3 histologic type, sinus invasion, bone destruction and size increase are predictors of collateral development

    Öğretmen Adaylarının Mülakat ile Öğretmen Alımına İlişkin Görüşlerinin İncelenmesi

    Türk milli eğitim sistemi içerisinde yaklaşık bir buçuk asırdır önemli bir konumu işgal eden öğretmen yetiştirme ve istihdamı konusu son zamanlarda oldukça yoğun şekilde gündemi meşgul etmektedir. Bunun temel nedenlerinden bir tanesi hâlihazırda eğitim fakültelerinde öğrenim gören veya mezun olan adayların ve farklı fakültelerde olup pedagojik formasyonla öğretmen olmaya hak kazanan öğrencilerin nicelik olarak hayli ciddi bir toplama ulaşmış olmasıdır. 2017-2018 itibari ile Türkiye’de 100’e yakın eğitim fakültesinde toplamda 200 binden fazla öğrenci öğrenim görmektedir. Bunun yanında her yıl, diğer fakültelerden de öğretmen olmak için pedagojik formasyon almak sureti ile sırada bekleyen binlerce öğrenci mevcuttur. Tüm bunlar üst üste konduğunda ciddi bir öğretmen adayı nüfusunun var olan öğretmen ihtiyacından oldukça fazla olduğu dikkati çekmektedir. Yani arz, talepten fazladır. Türkiye’de farklı dönemlerde ihtiyacı karşılamak üzere farklı öğretmen istihdam politikaları izlenmiştir. Yaklaşık 20 senedir yürürlükte olan Kamu Personeli Seçme Sınavı (KPSS) ile öğretmen adayları genel kültür-genel yetenek sınavlarından sorumlu tutulmuşlardır. Ayrıca yakın zamanda buna ek olarak konulan alan sınavından yeterli puanı aldıklarında atamaları gerçekleşmektedir. Ancak buna ilaveten 2016’dan itibaren konulan mülakat ile öğretmen alımı gündeme gelmiş ve uygulamaya konulmuştur. Uygulamanın başlaması ile birlikte ciddi tartışmalar da gündeme gelmiş, uygulamanın şekline ve içeriğine yani esasa ve usule dair eleştiriler hem akademi çevrelerinden hem de adaylardan yöneltilmiştir. Ancak uygulamanın iptali söz konusu olmamış, bazı düzenlemeler yapılarak hâlihazırda da sürdürülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı öğretmen istihdamında yürürlükte olan mülakat safhası ile ilgili deneyimleri irdelemek ve bu deneyimlerden hareketle öğretmen adaylarının mülakata ilişkin görüş ve eleştirilerini öğrenmektir. Çalışma grubunu 2016’dan itibaren mülakatla öğretmen alımı sınavına giren farklı branşlardan 50 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerine uygun olarak tasarlanmış olup araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu aracılığı ile verileri elde edilecektir. Veriler içerik analizi ve betimsel analiz ile çözümlenecektir

    Arterial Stiffness and Subclinical Inflammation in Children with Familial Mediterranean Fever: A Comprehensive Analysis

    Background/Objectives: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a chronic autoinflammatory disease. Throughout the disease, subclinical inflammation persists into the remission period. It is known that chronic inflammation causes endothelial dysfunction and, as a consequence, arterial stiffness occurs. In this study, carotid and aortic intima-media thicknesses (IMT) and arterial stiffness were measured in FMF patients to evaluate the risk of possible vascular damage due to chronic inflammation. Methods: The study included pediatric patients with FMF who had been in remission for a minimum of 3 months. Carotid and aortic IMT and arterial stiffness measurements were conducted using sonoelastography. The acute-phase reactants were also evaluated in all participants. Results: Carotid artery stiffness measurements by strain elastography were significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group. However, the aortic and carotid IMT were similar between the two groups. The acute-phase reactants were significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that arterial stiffness increased in pediatric FMF patients. According to the results of the present study, the effects of chronic inflammation on arterial tissues may lead to atherosclerotic changes in the later stages of the disease and may pose a risk for coronary diseases. Arterial ultrasonographic and elastographic measurements to be performed periodically in children with FMF are noninvasive methods that can be used to evaluate the course of endothelial damage. We aimed to show that arterial stiffness may be a marker of early cardiovascular disease

    The effectiveness of a skill and performance-based intervention program on the reading fluency of students with autism spectrum disorder

    Bu araştırmada, otizm spektrum bozukluğu (OSB) olan öğrencilerin okuma akıcılığının artırılmasında; beceri temelli teknikler olan tekrarlı okuma ve hata düzeltme stratejileri ile performans temelli teknikler olan hedef belirleme ve performans geri bildirimi stratejilerinden oluşan bir müdahale paketinin etkisi incelenmiştir. Bu genel amaç doğrultusunda; a) tekrarlı okuma, hata düzeltme, hedef belirleme ve performans geri bildirimi stratejilerinin birleşiminden oluşan müdahale paketinin OSB'li öğrencilerin sesli okuma hızını artırmadaki etkisi ve b) tekrarlı okuma, hata düzeltme, hedef belirleme ve performans geri dönütü stratejilerinin birleşiminden oluşan müdahale paketinin OSB'li öğrencilerin okuma doğruluğunu artırmadaki etkisi araştırılmıştır. Araştırmaya, 12-13 yaşlarında ve altıncı sınıfa devam eden üç OSB tanılı öğrenci katılmıştır. Araştırmada, tek denekli araştırma desenlerinden "Katılımcılar Arası Çoklu Yoklama Modeli" kullanılmıştır. Deney süreci; başlama düzeyi, sağaltım düzeyi, izleme ve genelleme olmak üzere dört aşamadan oluşmaktadır. Araştırma bulguları, tekrarlı okuma, hata düzeltme, hedef belirleme ve performans geri bildirimi stratejilerinden oluşan müdahale paketinin OSB'li öğrencilerin okuma akıcılığını artırmada etkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Tüm katılımcıların okuma hızında ve doğruluğunda artış gözlemlenmiş, müdahale sonunda ulaşılan okuma seviyesi izleme oturumlarında korunmuş ve üç katılımcı da kazandıkları akıcı okuma becerisini farklı kişi ve farklı zorluk derecelerine sahip metin üzerinde genelleyebilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin ailelerinden ve öğretmenlerinden sosyal geçerlik verileri toplanmış ve bu veriler incelendiğinde hem öğretmenlerin hem de ebeveynlerin genel olarak olumlu görüş bildirdikleri belirlenmiştir.In this study, the effectiveness of an intervention package comprising skill-based techniques—namely repeated reading and error correction strategies—and performance-based techniques—namely goal setting and performance feedback strategies—was examined to enhance reading fluency in students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In line with this overarching aim, the study investigated: (a) the effect of the intervention package, which integrates repeated reading, error correction, goal setting, and performance feedback strategies, on improving oral reading rate in students with ASD, and (b) the effect of the same intervention package on enhancing reading accuracy in these students. The study was conducted with three students diagnosed with ASD, aged between 12 and 13 years, who were enrolled in the sixth grade. A multiple probe design across participants, one of the single-subject research designs, was employed. The experimental procedure consisted of four phases: baseline, intervention, maintenance, and generalization. The findings indicate that the intervention package, which incorporates repeated reading, error correction, goal setting, and performance feedback strategies, was effective in improving the reading fluency of students with ASD. All participants demonstrated increases in both reading rate and accuracy. The reading levels attained at the end of the intervention were maintained during follow-up sessions, and all three participants were able to generalize the fluent reading skills they acquired to new individuals and texts of varying difficulty levels. Social validity data were collected from the families and teachers of the participating students. Analysis of these data revealed that both teachers and parents generally held positive views regarding the intervention

    Extensions of Simpson's Inequality via Nonnegative Weight Functions and Fractional Operators

    In this paper, we present a new version of Simpson-type inequalities for differentiable functions defined on a subinterval of the positive real axis. The approach involves a nonnegative integrable weight function and provides an identity that refines the classical Simpson inequality by incorporating the first derivative of the function. A key aspect of this work is the inclusion of the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral, through which we derive specific inequalities that extend the classical framework. In certain cases, our results reduce to the well-known Simpson inequality, demonstrating the generality and flexibility of the method.MSC2020 Classification: 26A09, 26D10, 26D15, 33E2

    The relationship between digital literacy and financialliteracy (the case of Düzce)

    Günümüzde teknoloji alanında yaşanan hızlı gelişmeler neticesinde dijital enstrümanların kullanımı gerek günlük hayatta gerekse finansal işlemlerde oldukça yaygınlaşmıştır. Finansal işlemlerde dijital enstrümanların kullanılabilmesi aynı zamanda belli bir düzeyde dijital okuryazarlık bilgisi gerektirebilmektedir. Bu doğrultuda çalışma kapsamında bahsi geçen okuryazarlık düzeyleri arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma kapsamında üniversite öğrencilerinin finansal okuryazarlık ile dijital okuryazarlık düzeyleri arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Bu çerçevede araştırma evreni Düzce Üniversitesi İşletme Fakültesinde eğitim gören öğrenciler olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada örneklem metodu olarak ise kolayda örnekleme yöntemi belirlenmiştir. Bu şekilde seçilen işletme fakültesi 1. 2. 3. ve 4. sınıf öğrencileri araştırmanın örneklem grubunu oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama amacıyla anket yöntemi seçilmiş olup Finansal okuryazarlık tutum ölçeği ile dijital okuryazarlık ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada kullanılacak verilerin toplanması amacıyla Düzce Üniversitesi İşletme Fakültesinde eğitim gören öğrencilere online anket uygulanmıştır. Toplanan veriler İstatistiksel Paket Programı (SPSS) kullanılarak analize tabi tutulmuştur. Örnekleme ilişkin demografik bilgiler ile kullanılan dijital okuryazarlık ve finansal okuryazarlık ölçeklerinin sonuçları arasında anlamlı farklılıkların olup olmadığı t-Testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonuçları bazı demografik faktörlere göre üniversite öğrencilerinin dijital okuryazarlık ve finansal okuryazarlık düzeyleri arasında anlamlı farklılıklar olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Araştırmanın hipotezi Pearson Korelasyon analizi ile test edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda finansal okuryazarlık ile dijital okuryazarlık arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunamamıştır.With the rapid advancements in technology today, the use of digital tools has become increasingly widespread, both in daily life and in financial transactions. The ability to utilize digital tools in financial transactions often requires a certain level of digital literacy. In this context, the study examines the relationship between the mentioned levels of literacy. This study examines the relationship between financial literacy and digital literacy levels among university students. In this framework, the research population is defined as students enrolled in the Faculty of Business Administration at Düzce University. The convenience sampling method was chosen as the sampling technique for the study. Accordingly, the sample group consists of first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year students from the Faculty of Business Administration. The survey method was chosen for data collection, utilizing the financial literacy scale and the digital literacy scale. To gather the necessary data, an online survey was administered to students enrolled in the Faculty of Business Administration at Düzce University. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Significant differences between the demographic information of the sample and the results of the digital literacy and financial literacy scales were analyzed using the t-test. The analysis results revealed significant differences in university students' digital literacy and financial literacy levels based on certain demographic factors. The hypothesis of the study was tested using Pearson correlation analysis. However, the study concluded that there was no statistically significant relationship between financial literacy and digital literacy

    Metacognitive Listening Strategies and Critical Listening Attitudes as Predictors of Teacher Candidates' Academic Listening Skills: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis

    The objective of this study is to ascertain the relative influences and predictive relationships between metacognitive listening strategies, critical listening attitudes and academic listening skills of Turkish teacher candidates. In consideration of the ease of accessibility and economic factors, the participants were selected through the utilization of the convenience sampling method, which is appropriate when the aim is to obtain a representative sample from an accessible population. A total of 223 teacher candidates enrolled at A University, B University, C University, and D University during the 2021 to 2022 academic year were included in the study. The participants were 161 females and 62 males. A theoretical model was constructed based on the findings of the literature review, and the relationships between these variables were tested using a structural equation model. In order to evaluate the fit of the data with the model, a series of goodness-of-fit indexes were calculated, including chi 2, RMSEA, CFI, GFI, and AGFI. The data were collected using the Critical Listening Attitude Scale, the Academic Listening Ability Scale, and the Metacognitive Listening Strategies Instrument. A correlation analysis and path analysis were conducted to examine the data using the SPSS v22 and AMOS v24 software packages, respectively. The findings indicate that metacognitive listening strategies are positively and significantly correlated with critical listening attitudes and academic listening skills. Nevertheless, the present study has demonstrated that metacognitive listening strategies are predictive of academic listening skills, and that this is mediated by critical listening attitudes. The results obtained in this study were discussed in the context of previous research, and accordingly, recommendations were made to practitioners, researchers, and policy makers working in this field

    Effect of pre-heat treatments on mechanical properties of boron steel after quenchi̇ng

    Bu çalışmada, 22MnB5 borlu çeliğin su verme ve temperleme öncesinde uygulanan ön ısıl işlemlerin, borlu çeliğin mekanik özelliklerini nasıl değiştirdiği araştırılmıştır. Sıcak haddelenmiş başlangıç mikroyapısına sahip numunelere dört farklı ön ısıl işlem uygulanmıştır. Isıl işlemler öncesi ve ısıl işlemler sonrasında malzemede meydana gelen değişimlere bakılmıştır. Bütün işlemler uygulandıktan sonra mekanik özellikler için testler uygulanmış ve malzemenin iç yapısı incelenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlarla, sıcak haddelenmiş durumda heterojen özellikler sergileyen borlu çeliğin farklı ön ısıl işlemlerle elde edilen mikroyapıları ve bununla ilişkili olarak mekanik özelliklerinde ortaya çıkan iyileşmeler ortaya konmuştur. Bu çalışma, borlu çeliklerde mikroyapı optimizasyonunun hem dayanım hem süneklik açısından kritik olduğunu ve otomotiv sektörü gibi alanlarda üretim verimliliğine katkı sağlayabileceğini göstermektedir.In this study, it was investigated how the preheat treatments applied before quenching and tempering of 22MnB5 boron steel changed the mechanical properties of boron steel. Four different preheat treatments were applied to samples with hot-rolled initial microstructure. The changes in the material before and after heat treatments were examined. After all treatments were applied, tests were applied for mechanical properties and the internal structure of the material was examined. The results obtained revealed the microstructures of boron steel, which exhibits heterogeneous properties in the hot-rolled condition, obtained with different preheat treatments and the improvements in mechanical properties related to this. This study shows that microstructure optimization in boron steels is critical in terms of both strength and ductility and can contribute to production efficiency in areas such as the automotive sector
