Navigating complexity: a multifaceted approach to teaching climate change in middle school

    Get PDF
Global climate change is one of the most significant challenges of the twenty first century, requiring its integration into K-12 science education curricula to foster informed and climate-literate citizens. However, challenges remain in effectively teaching climate change, including a lack of instructional materials and a reliance on traditional teaching methods that limit student engagement and understanding. To address these challenges, this study developed a unit that combines socioscientific issue-based instruction, scientific modeling, and systems thinking to improve climate education. The unit was implemented by a teacher trained in the Socioscientific Issues and Model-based Learning (SIMBL) framework and showed promising results. Students demonstrated an improved understanding of climate complexity, as evidenced by the inclusion of multiple factors in their system maps and the justification of policy decisions based on their knowledge. In addition, the integration of media literacy tools improved students' critical engagement with online content. Overall, the SIMBL unit facilitated transformative learning experiences that empowered students to understand and address the multifaceted challenges of climate change. The study suggests implications for teachers and advocates for adapting the sequence to various standards and socioscientific topics beyond climate change.Yildiz Technical University Scientific Research [SDK-2021-4626]This study was produced based on the first author's PhD dissertation supported by Yildiz Technical University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit with the project number SDK-2021-462

Volatility, used to determine the risk structure of financial markets or instruments, is one of the most used methods by researchers. In this study which is conducted to reveal the tag of volatility studies, 15,132 articles related to volatility between 1980 and 2023, scanned in the Web of Science database, were subjected to bibliometric analysis. As a consequence of the investigation, the details of the subject, such as the country with the highest number of publications, institutions, the most cited authors, articles, leading journals and keywords in the field, were revealed. As a consequence, it was determined that the authors worked on three basic subjects such as stocks and stock markets, exchange rates and macroeconomic indicators on volatility. It has been observed that the main objectives of the studies are either to compare the performance of existing volatility estimation models or to develop new models by adding new variables.Table 5: First Largest Cluster The Most Fundemental Authors TableTable 5: First Largest Cluster The Most Fundemental Authors Tabl

    Get PDF
The study aims to examine systemically important stock markets in the global financial system within the scope of portfolio theory. For this purpose, we use daily stock market indices from 46 countries (23 developed and 23 developing stock markets) in North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Europe between 1995 and 2021. Based on the Component Expected Shortfall (CES), we identify systemically important stock markets and use the quantile spillover analysis to examine the financial contagion and directional spillovers emanating from downside risks among stock markets. Overall, we observe stock markets of developed countries figured prominently in terms of systemic risk until the Global Financial Crisis (2007-2009; henceforth GFC), while developing country stock markets particularly those of China and India gained traction after the GFC. Moreover, we observe a shift in terms of systemic risk in recent years from the West to the East geographically. To increase global financial market resilience and improve stability, supervision, and macroprudential policies can be formulated to limit risk spillovers in global stock markets. Additionally, it is critical to diversify investments outside equity markets, such as currency, bond, gold, and oil asset classes. When considering overseas portfolio choices for diversity, investors should keep the financial spillover effects in mind

The use of PCM for thermal management of the batteries has an important place among passive cooling methods because it does not require pump or fan power. In battery cooling applications with PCM, it was aimed to increase the thermal conductivity of the PCM and to cool the battery better by using fins, nanoparticles, and metal foam. The novelty of this study is to investigate the effect of outer container geometry on battery temperature in battery cooling with PCM + metal foam composition. In this direction, five different container geometries affecting the heat transfer by conduction and convection were analyzed. The parametric study was carried out for different values of convection heat transfer coefficient, heat generation in the battery, PCM amount, and porosity. The lowest battery temperature for a given discharge time was obtained in triangular container geometry. With the use of a triangular container, the battery temperature was reduced between 0.4 % and 14.42 % compared to the use of a circular container, depending on the parameter values. The analysis findings revealed that the outer container geometry is more effective in the thermal management of the battery for conditions with low convection heat transfer coefficient and high heat generation

Comparison of the effectiveness of project-based 6E learning and problem-based quantum learning: Solomon four-group design

    Get PDF
Purpose: Researchers have previously utilized the project-based 6E learning model and the problem-based quantum learning model in various courses, such as the instructional principles and methods course and the character and values education course. These models were evaluated for their impact on students in different subjects, including developing skills, values, democracy perceptions, attitudes towards cooperative learning, metacognitive thinking skills and teacher self-efficacy perceptions. In 2023, Ökmen, Sahin and Kiliç reported positive outcomes, while Sahin and Kiliç reported similar findings in 2023a, 2023b and 2023c. There has been no investigation into how the models affect students' critical thinking and academic literacy. This study seeks to determine the impact of both models on these skills, gain more insight into their effectiveness and determine which is more beneficial. The results will guide the decision-making process for the character and values education course and other courses in the future. Specifically, this research aims to compare the effects of the project-based 6E learning model and problem-based quantum learning model on critical thinking and academic literacy. Design/methodology/approach: This research employed the Solomon four-group experimental design to assess the efficacy of the applications. Prior knowledge and experience of the participants were evaluated through pretests. However, it should be noted that pretests may impact posttest scores either positively or negatively. For instance, participants taking the test multiple times may become more interested or attentive to the subject matter. The Solomon four-group design was deemed appropriate to analyze the influence of pretesting. This design enables the investigation of the application effect, pretest effect and interactive effect of pretest and application (van Engelenburg, 1999). Findings: It was concluded that the project-based 6E learning model was effective in developing critical thinking in students, but not significantly. It was concluded that the problem-based quantum learning model significantly improved students' critical thinking skills. It was concluded at the end of the study that the project-based 6E learning model notably enhanced students' academic literacy. It was concluded that the problem-based quantum learning model had a significant positive impact on students' academic literacy. According to research, it has been determined that the problem-based quantum learning model is superior in enhancing critical thinking abilities compared to the project-based 6E learning model. Nevertheless, there seems to be no detectable disparity in the academic literacy advancement of pupils between the problem-based quantum learning model and the project-based 6E learning model. Originality/value: There has been no investigation into how the models affect students' critical thinking and academic literacy. This study seeks to determine the impact of both models on these skills, gain more insight into their effectiveness and determine which is more beneficial. The results will guide the decision-making process for the character and values education course and other courses in the future. © 2024, Şeyma Şahin and Abdurrahman Kılıç

İsrail’in “Yerleşimci” Politikası ve Filistin’e Yansımaları: Gazze Saldırıları

    Get PDF
Yerleşimci politikası, İsrail’in güç ve güvenlik odaklı politikasını tescillemekte, uluslararası toplumu dikkate almayan tutumunu teyit etmektedir.

Incidentally detected asymptomatic splenic artery aneurysm

    Get PDF
Splenic artery aneurysm (SpAA) is the most common among visceral artery aneurysms and accounts for approximately 60% of visceral artery aneurysms. Generally, 80% of cases with SpAA are asymptomatic. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, nausea and intra-abdominal bleeding due to aneurysm rupture, hypotension and hemorrhagic shock. The most serious complication is aneurysm rupture and related complications. The most useful method for diagnosis is abdominal CT angiographic imaging. The treatment is mostly surgical, but in appropriate cases, endovascular intervention can also be applied. Medical follow-up can be performed in true splenic artery aneurysms less than 2 cm in diameter. In this article, we wanted to present a fifty-two-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic splenic artery aneurysm that was detected incidentally. © 2024, Turkish National Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society. Get PDF
A Cellulase enzyme is the enzyme synthesized by some bacterial and fungal species and breaks down the ss-1,4 glycoside bonds of cellulose. Cellulase enzyme has a wide range of uses such as food, paper, textile industry, animal feed and detergent production. In this study, which was designed to add a new cellulase enzyme with such a wide industrial use, cellulotic bacterium isolation, identification, partial purification, characterization and application on denim fabric of the cellulase enzyme synthesized by the identified bacterium was performed. Firstly, bacterium that can produce cellulase enzyme was isolated from soil samples containing hazelnut wastes. The enzyme-producing isolate was identified as Bacillus cereus strain DU -1 by morphological, biochemical and molecular techniques. The optimum conditions for enzyme production by B. cereus DU -1 was determined as pH 7.0, at 37 degrees C and 24h. However, the activity of the enzyme (5.16 U/mL) was found to be optimum at 50 degrees C and pH 6.0. The Vmax value of the enzyme was 3.18 U/mL and the Km value was 0.0019 mM. The enzyme was partially purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation. The molecular size of the partially purified enzyme was determined as approximately 40 kDa by SDS-PAGE and Zymogram analysis. Finally, enzyme was applied on the denim fabric and when the fabrics were viewed under the electron microscope, it was seen that they were suitable for textile use.[DU.BAP-2021.05.01.1150]This study was supported by the Scientific Research Project numbered DU.BAP-2021.05.01.1150
