Religion Crossing the Frontiers: Nigerian Pentecostal Dynamics in the Western World

    Get PDF
This article examines how the Pentecostal movements in Africa and most especially in Nigeria are experiencing fast growth and how African Pentecostals are speaking on the global scene, especially in Europe and America in the twenty-first century. This kind of Pentecostal reverse mission from Africa to the Western countries that brought Christianity to Africa in the eighteenth century is not without strengths and weaknesses. This article unveils the nature of the Nigerian Pentecostal movements in the diaspora and how much impact the movements are making in the Western cultures of Europe and America. The passion of the African immigrants’ churches in the West is a clarion call to the indigenous churches of the Western countries that there is a need to work together with Africans in fulfilling the Great Commission. Indigenous churches in the West must recognize those Global South churches that hold sound biblical positions to advance the kingdom of God in the world and especially in cultures that seem more antagonistic to God’s truth in the twenty-first century

Architectural Evangelism: Examination of Place Constructs Held by Churched and Unchurched Individuals

    Get PDF
In recent decades, the exterior design of Protestant churches has undergone radical reformulation under the influence of the church growth architectural design theory known as architectural evangelism. Presupposing that churched and unchurched individuals hold differing place constructs, architectural evangelism seeks to attract unchurched individuals to the church by changing the exterior design from church typologies to secular typologies. In doing so, as the theory proposes, when an unchurched individual is exposed to a typology they are more familiar with, a different place construct formulation occurs—a place construct rooted in conceptions of comfort and the perception of community-based activities. Noting the widespread influence of architectural evangelism, this paper explores the foundational claims of the design theory, namely: 1) Do churched and unchurched individuals have different church place constructs, and 2) Does the exposure to exterior church design elicit certain connotations and perceptions of community activity

A Holistic Framework for Measurement of Entrepreneurial Church Planting

    Get PDF
For too long in missions, financial stewardship (Business as Mission) or conversions (Tentmaking) has sufficed as a measuring tool for mission endeavors. However, Fresh Expressions of Church (FXC), such as a “café church,” have enlightened us to the need not only to be governed by the quantifiable elements of reconciliation or financial flourishing, but also to evaluate outcomes of transformation, i.e., to be accountable. The purpose of this article is toprovide specific historical examples as a basis for Entrepreneurial Church Planting (ECP) and develop a systematic way to evaluate ECP through the creation of a holistic framework for metrics relevant to ECP activities and its assessment indicators
