IAML 2012 Montreal / AIBM 2012 à Montréal

Plans are underway for the International 
Association of Music Libraries Annual 
Conference, to be hosted by CAML in 2012 
and held in Montreal, Quebec. The local 
arrangements committee is  chaired by 
Joseph Hafner and Brian McMillan, both 
from McGill University. At the CAML 
Conference in Ottawa on May 29, 2009, 
Joseph  gave an overview of the conference 
planning so far. During that meeting  the  
tentative dates for the conference  were 
discussed.  It was suggested that  the first  
weekend in August should be avoided 
because of a holiday Monday in some 
provinces, so that was taken into 
consideration. Other members shared 
insights about the 1994 IAML Conference 
in Ottawa.  
 
This year several Canadians attended the 
IAML Annual Conference in Amsterdam 
July 5 to 10, 2009. This group included:

 We took the opportunity  to speak to people 
involved with the planning for the 
Amsterdam conference, to get ideas about 
organizing the conference and planning the 
budget. After returning from the conference 
Joseph and Brian decided to call a meeting 
of the planning committee, since the 
 La planification est en marche pour le 
congrès annuel de l'Association 
internationale des bibliothèques de musique, 
qui se tiendra en 2012, à Montréal (Québec) 
et dont l'ACBM sera l'hôte. Le comité de 
logistique est présidé par Joseph Hafner et 
Brian McMillan, tous deux de l'Université 
McGill. Joseph Hafner a donné, lors du 
congrès de l'ACBM le 29 mai 2009 à Ottawa, 
un aperçu de la planification jusqu'à 
maintenant. Au cours de cette rencontre, une 
discussion a porté sur certaines dates 
possibles. On a suggéré d'écarter la première 
fin de semaine d'août, à cause du lundi de 
congé dans certaines provinces. D'autres 
membres, ayant vécu le congrès de l'AIBM 
en 1994 à Ottawa, ont échangé leurs 
opinions. 
 
Récemment, plusieurs canadiens ont assisté 
au congrès annuel de l'AIBM, qui s'est tenu à 
Amsterdam, du 5 au 10 juillet 2009. Parmi 
eux, on retrouvait:

Nous avons profité de l'occasion pour 
rencontrer certains organisateurs du congrès 
d'Amsterdam, afin de partager leur 
expérience d'organisation et de planification 
budgétaire. Au retour de ce congrès, alors 
que tout était frais à leur esprit, Joseph et

Amsterdam conference was fresh in their 
minds. This meeting was held on July 22, 
2009 from 19:00 to 21:30 and included:

They reviewed the details for the planning 
including the budget,  potential locations for 
the sessions, ideas for concerts, possible 
tours, publicity, and more, along with ideas 
from things that worked well at the 
Amsterdam Conference. One major 
decision that came out of this session was 
the choice of dates for the conference: 
Sunday, July 22, 2012 to Friday, July 27, 
2012. Since this meeting, the CAML Board 
and the IAML leadership have approved the 
dates. 
 
Having the conference in Canada will give 
us a chance to showcase Canadian music 
and musicians, showcase innovative ideas 
from Canadian libraries, give tours of our 
libraries, and highlight some special tourist 
sites. It is exciting to think about the 
possible concerts that we could plan on a 
couple of the nights, along with  music at 
the opening event and/or banquet. We think  
that it would be great to have the closing 
banquet in Old Montreal, and we have 
looked at a venue  there that could work 
well for this event.  
 
Looking at the budget, we will want to 
ensure that we plan well to cover all of our 
costs, and we will look for ways to 
supplement the registration costs with 
grants and donations.  We are working on a 
proposal for a grant  that would support the

Ils ont alors étudié la planification en détail: 
budget, emplacements potentiels pour les 
séances, suggestions de concerts, visites 
possibles, publicité et autres, et les points 
forts du congrès d'Amsterdam. Une décision 
importante a émergé de cette réunion: des 
dates ont été choisies pour le congrès de 
Montréal en 2012, soit du dimanche 22 juillet 
au vendredi 27 juillet. Depuis cette réunion, 
le conseil d'administration de l'ACBM et les 
dirigeants de l'AIBM ont approuvé ces dates.  
 
La tenue du congrès au Canada permettra de 
mettre en valeur la musique canadienne et 
nos musiciens, ainsi que les idées 
innovatrices des bibliothèques canadiennes. 
Ce sera aussi une merveilleuse occasion 
d'organiser la visite de nos bibliothèques et 
de souligner certains sites touristiques 
importants. C'est vraiment excitant de penser 
à tous les concerts que l'on pourra planifier 
en soirée, de même que les événements 
musicaux d'inauguration et de clôture. Ce 
serait merveilleux d'avoir le souper de clôture 
dans le vieux Montréal et nous avons déjà un 
emplacement en vue... qui conviendrait 
parfaitement à cet événement. 
 
Sous l'aspect budgétaire, nous nous 
assurerons de bien planifier tous les coûts et 
rechercherons différentes façons de 
subventionner les frais d'inscription, par des

activities related to a program of Canadian 
music and musicians and/or enable 
Canadians to attend this international 
meeting. The price for the conference this 
year, including the banquet,  was about 
$500 Canadian. 
 
The Local Arrangements Committee will be 
touring a couple of possible locations  for 
hosting the conference sessions, and we 
hope to have an announcement soon about 
where we plan to hold the conference in 
Montreal. We are looking at places in the 
downtown area that have easy access to 
hotels, shopping and public transportation. 
The conference usually attracts between 160 
and 250 people when it is held outside 
Europe, so we need a place that can easily 
hold this many people, especially when the 
exact numbers of attendees might not be 
verified until the very end.  
 
We think Montreal will be a great place for 
IAML 2012, and those of us that went to 
Amsterdam heard that many IAML 
members are excited about coming to 
Montreal in 2012. If you are interested in 
being part of the Local Arrangements 
Committee, or would  like to be a volunteer 
during the conference, we would appreciate

un projet de bourse qui supporterait les 
activités reliées à un programme de musique 
canadienne et/ou aux musiciens, pour 
permettre aux canadiens d'assister à ce 
congrès international. Cette année, le tarif 
d'inscription au congrès était de 500$ 
canadien, incluant le souper de clôture. 
 
Le comité de logistique visitera différents 
emplacements possibles pour la tenue des 
séances du congrès, et nous souhaitons 
annoncer bientôt à quel endroit, à Montréal, 
nous planifions que le congrès se déroule. 
Nous évaluons, au centre-ville, où sont situés 
les facilités d'accès aux hôtels, au 
magasinage et les transports publics. 
Lorsqu'il se tient à l'extérieur de l'Europe, le 
congrès attire généralement entre 160 et 250 
personnes. Nous avons donc besoin d'une 
place qui peut facilement accueillir ce 
nombre et devons prévoir aussi que le 
nombre exact de participants ne sera 
probablement pas connu avant la toute fin 
des inscriptions. 
 
Montréal sera une très belle destination pour 
l'AIBM 2012 et ceux d'entre nous qui sont 
allés à Amsterdam ont su que plusieurs 
membres de l'AIBM sont très enthousiastes à 
l'idée de venir à Montréal. Si vous souhaitez
