Music, Indigeneity, and Digital Media is an outcome of 
the symposium by the same title held at the 
Department of Music, Royal Holloway College, 
University of London, in April 2010. The editors of this 
volume, two of whom are colleagues at Royal 
Holloway (Stobart and Tan), and the third, a graduate 
of Royal Holloway’s ethnomusicology doctoral 
program (Hilder), were also the symposium organizers. The symposium was sponsored by 
Helen Gilbert and was part of her Indigeneity in the Contemporary World: Performance, Politics, 
Belonging project funded by the European Research Council and the Faculty of Arts and 
Sciences at Royal Holloway College. The content of Music, Indigeneity, and Digital Media is 
representative of the international scope of the symposium, spanning five continents, and 
drawing on case studies from diverse local, national and transnational contexts.   
Thomas Hilder’s introduction to the volume (seven chapters) is a richly informative discussion 
of a range of critical themes related to ways that music and digital media function in and 
around articulations of Indigeneity. Hilder emphasizes the struggle for Indigenous political 
recognition and self-determination, including laws, land claims and language revival, in various 
governmental and other institutional contexts over the past fifty years, and how the struggle 
has been enabled by the increasing availability of communication technology in Indigenous 
communities, and mobilized creatively by Indigenous musicians as they recreate new 
Indigenous traditions. Skillfully referencing useful critical sources, Hilder presents this 
contextual framework through three complementary lenses: “Articulating Indigeneity in Global 
Modernity,” “The Politics of Digital Indigeneity,” and “Music, Indigeneity, Digital Media.”

This opening sets the stage for the following section of the introduction in which Hilder 
discusses the book’s chapters around five key critical areas. This outline creates a useful 
framework for the reader to navigate the collection based on topic interest, and serves as a 
platform for reviewing the articles in the volume. Under the first area, for example, “Activism, 
Transnationalism, Sovereignty,” Hilder references Shzr Ee Tan’s chapter on the music of the 
Amis in Taiwan in which the author examines the role of new musical media and existing 
networks of kinship, local and national institutions, and how such new media can blur 
traditional boundaries of rural/urban and homeland/diaspora. Likewise, Fiorella Montero-Diaz’s 
chapter on Andean “fusion” music in Peru, a country with complex, contemporary 
representations of Indigeneity, is also discussed in this section.  
In the second of the five areas, “Production, Mediation, Consumption,” Beverley Diamond’s 
chapter on Sámi audio production and Henry Stobart’s essay on Bolivian Indigenous music 
production are each referenced. Focusing on elements in the three words in this rubric, 
Diamond argues that the studio is an important site of experimentation and Indigenous 
creativity, and she compares two case studies through the critical frames of genre and gender, 
temporality, spatiality, and polyvalence; she also examines Sámi vocal technique in the context 
of studio recording and production. Stobart draws on what he calls “critical pragmatism” as a 
framework for his study of the music video (VCD) production processes of Gregorio Mamani 
Villacorta, an originario (Indigenous) musician and cultural activist. Stobart’s ethnographic 
description of collaborating with Villacorta on video production is an important reflexive 
dimension of his work.  
Continuing to draw on Hilder’s introductory categories, issues surrounding “Archives, 
Transmission and Orality” are explored in Linda Barwick’s chapter, in which the author 
discusses her research on djanba, ceremonial song of the Murinny Patha people in Wadeye, 
Northwest Australia. Barwick’s study focuses on local funeral songs, and how digital media 
serve as a means of remembering songs, as well as creating ones inspired by shifting social and 
political contexts. Stemming from a collaborative project involving national and local 
institutions, Barwick’s work draws attention to the importance of Indigenous cultural activists, 
who have increasingly turned to the digitalization of archival sources to provide access and 
allow repatriation of collections to Indigenous communities. This theme also runs through John-
Carlos Perea’s chapter, in which the author voices his experience of learning, teaching and 
performing powwow in the San Francisco Bay area. Perea’s autoethnographic style in this 
chapter makes it a richly reflexive read. 
“Subjectivity, Ownership and Authorship,” the fourth introductory rubric, is particularly fitting 
for the volume’s single interview with traditional Lil’wat singer Russell Wallace. Hilder met 
Wallace at an International Council for Traditional Music colloquium on global perspectives on

Indigenous Music and Dance as Cultural Property in Toronto in 2008, and his interview with 
Wallace included in this collection is a reminder that technology and process of Indigenization 
are fraught with issues of ownership, authorship, and consent between Indigenous participants 
and others. The Wallace-Hilder interview also signals the importance of broadening notions of 
ownership, as digital media become more pervasive, and Indigenous artists articulate nuanced 
understandings of ownership. Tan’s aforementioned chapter also resonates here with its 
discussion around ways new media practices can affect and blur traditional boundaries. Hilder’s 
comment that “… Indigenous musical ontologies of composition, and transmission as well as 
articulations of protecting and sharing in a digital era … can offer alternative global models of 
musical creativity, subjectivity, and consumption in the twenty-first century” (p. 19), is 
especially telling with respect to these two chapters, as it is, in fact, to the entire volume. 
In “Cosmologies, Virtuality, Posthumanism,” the fifth critical area within which to view music, 
Indigeneity, and digital media, readers are challenged to consider how new media and 
Indigenous ways of knowing can conflate the virtual and real binary, creating new perceptions 
of reality, cosmology, and the human. In his chapter, “The Politics of Virtuality: Sámi Cultural 
Simulation through Digital Musical Media” (the final one in the book), Hilder draws on his 
extensive research with the Sámi, in particular Sámi museum exhibitions, CD-ROM software, 
and music production that illustrate Sámi revival and cultural transmission. Hilder uses these 
case studies, coupled with intriguing critical references (e.g., Baudrillard), to build an argument 
that draws together a network of themes articulated throughout the book.   
Music, Indigeneity, Digital Media is an important new source for ethnomusicologists, media 
studies scholars, and any scholars and practitioners working in Indigenous studies. It is a richly 
documented volume, with a range of significant sources in the chapter endnotes lists, as well as 
in a helpful selected bibliography at the end of the volume. Although a relatively small book 
(224 pages), it is a dense read, and, as with many such collections, it is best approached in 
stages (i.e., individual or groups of chapters), once past the Introduction. Notwithstanding any 
apparent minor shortcomings (e.g., the relatively small amount of illustrative material), I 
strongly recommend this book. Collectively and individually, the authors articulate important 
new perspectives within which to view how music, Indigeneity and digital media interact, 
thereby inspiring scholars of multiple disciplines and interests to discover new pathways of 
understanding around Indigenous ways of knowing.

What a busy summer it has been! It has 
been lovely to catch up with many of you 
over the past few months during 
conferences and summer travels.  
In late May, we gathered for the 2018 
CAML meeting at the University of 
Regina. Both Tim Neufeldt (Program 
Chair) and Gillian van der Ven (Local 
Arrangements Coordinator) did an 
excellent job ensuring the meeting was a 
success. The program featured a mix of 
papers and workshops, providing an 
engaging format and much food for 
thought. There were 12 excellent 
sessions on a range of topics, including 
decolonizing music libraries, backwards 
design in information literacy, and 
CRTC’s MAPL coding in the CBC Radio 
library collections. Many thanks to all the 
organizers, presenters, and attendees for 
making this another productive and 
thoughtful meeting! 
This year’s AGM took place during the 
annual conference and brought about 
several significant changes to the Board. 
Kyla Jemison (University of Toronto) 
finished her term as Membership 
Secretary after six years of service in this 
capacity, and we welcomed Becky Smith 
(Memorial University) to the position. 
Rob van der Bliek (York University) has 
stepped down as Treasurer after nine 
years of service on the Board, and Tim 
Neufeldt (University of Toronto) has now 
stepped into the role. I want to extend 
thanks to both Kyla and Rob for their 
service to CAML for so many years, and

déplacements et en me rendant à divers 
congrès cet été, j’ai eu la joie de revoir bon 
nombre d’entre vous. 
À la fin mai, nous nous sommes réunis lors du 
Congrès 2018 de l’ACBM à l’Université de 
Regina. Par leur excellent travail, Tim 
Neufeldt (responsable du comité de 
programme) et Gillian van der Ven 
(responsable des préparatifs sur place) ont 
veillé à la réussite de cette réunion. Au 
programme, une variété d’exposés et 
d’ateliers suscitant l’intérêt et la réflexion. Les 
douze séances captivantes couvraient toute 
une gamme de sujets, y compris la 
décolonisation des bibliothèques de musique, 
la conception à rebours dans la maîtrise de 
l’information, ainsi que la fonction que 
remplit le système MAPL du CRTC dans la 
discothèque de Radio-Canada. Je remercie

McMillan (Western University) 
completed his term as Past President this 
year. I would like to thank Brian for his 
support over the past years as he has 
shared his knowledge of the position and 
the Association with me on many 
occasions. I am pleased to report that 
Houman Behzadi (University of Toronto) 
has moved into the role of President-
Elect, vacating the position of Member at 
Large. Jan Guise (University of Toronto) 
served as Nominations Officer again over 
the 2017-18 year and continued this 
work with the call for a Member at Large 
after the 2018 CAML meeting. I am 
happy to report that the Board 
appointed Margaret Ashburner (Library 
and Archives Canada) to this position in 
August 2018. I want to extend a hearty 
welcome to all our new Board members 
and look forward to working together 
over the upcoming year. 
During the AGM, I reported that CAML’s 
2019 annual conference will once again 
be held during the Congress of the 
Humanities and Social Sciences, this time 
in Vancouver, BC, in early June. We will 
be working alongside the Canadian 
University Music Society (MusCan) to 
coordinate the meeting. Kevin Madill 
(University of British Columbia) has 
volunteered to take on the role of 
CAML’s Local Arrangements Chair and 
Marc Stoeckle (University of Calgary) will 
be taking on the role of Program Chair. I 
encourage anyone who is interested in 
joining the Program Committee to reach 
out to me directly.

I was pleased to attend the 2018 IAML 
Congress in Leipzig, Germany, along with 
several other Canadian delegates, from 
July 22 - 27. Leipzig served as a beautiful 
and historic location for the meeting. 
The Hochschule für Musik und Theater 
"Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig 
(home to a long list of alumni of the 
institution, including Felix Mendelssohn, 
Robert Schumann, Niels Gade, Edvard 
Grieg, and Leos Janacek) hosted many of 
the conference sessions and meetings. 
Conference guests were also able to 
partake in excursions to notable 
historical sites including the 
Mendelssohn-Haus, Schumann-Haus, 
Bach Archive, and Thomaskirche, among 
others. Check out the IAML conference 
diaries to read more about the event’s 
highlights.  
During IAML, I attended the meetings of 
national representatives and of the 
Copyright Committee. The Copyright 
Committee, thanks in large part to the 
work of Chair Claire Kidwell, has 
produced an extensive resource 
outlining a comparison of national 
copyright practices as they relate to 
music librarianship. I want to thank 
CAML member Scott MacDonald 
(Western University) for working to 
compile the Canadian portion of the 
report. The conference program 
featured contributions by Canadian 
members, including: “Can I listen to that 
online? Building AV access platforms” (H. 
Behzadi, moderator), “Findings from a 
survey on local music collecting and 
collections in Canadian libraries” (C. Doi 
and S. Luyk, presenters), “Everyday 
succession planning in music libraries” (J. 
Guise, presenter), “Does the data ring 
true? An analysis of electronic music

forward to attending the joint meeting of 
the New England (NEMLA) and New York 
State/Ontario (NYS/O) Chapters of the

(SQACBM). The meeting will be held at 
McGill University’s New Residence Hall 
on November 8th and 9th, 2018.

This report summarizes the November 2018 two-day joint chapter meeting, held in Montreal at McGill University, which involved the New York State-Ontario (NYSO) and New England (NEMLA) chapters of the Music Library Association (MLA) and the Quebec Chapter (SQACBM) of the Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML)

Joint Chapter Meeting in Montreal: NYSO/NEMLA/SQACBM

On November 8 and 9, 2018, the New York State-Ontario (NYSO) and New England (NEMLA) 
chapters of the Music Library Association (MLA) and the Quebec Chapter (SQACBM) of the Canadian 
Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML) held a joint meeting in 
Montreal at McGill University’s New Residence Hall. The event drew approximately 100 attendees 
from across the US and Canada, including members of the MLA board who held their own meeting 
in conjunction with the event. 
The program committee attracted so many worthwhile proposals that organizers expanded the 
event to fill both days, with 17 presentations, two posters, and concluding with a tour of the 
Canadian Music Centre. SQACBM and NYSO also held chapter meetings. Designed as a bilingual 
event, most presentations were in English. Those who spoke in French accompanied their talks with 
slides in English. 
The presentations covered a wide range of topics and issues relevant to music libraries. For 
example, Julie E. Cumming (McGill) and Jada Watson (University of Ottawa) spoke about digital 
scholarship projects involving finding trends across large bodies of musical works, while Suzanne 
Eggleston Lovejoy (Yale University) conducted 
traditional research on a single song, “The Long, 
Long Trail,” tying together her own institution, 
McGill, University of Toronto, and the timely 100th 
anniversary of the WWI armistice. Lisa Philpott 
(University of Western Ontario) addressed the 
challenges of self-published PDF scores, while 
Andrea Cawelti (Harvard University) advocated for 
the myriad wonders of sheet music. Proving that 
everything old is new again, Joseph Darby (Keene 
State College) discussed subscription-based music 
publishing in 18th-century Britain, a process with 
obvious parallels to today’s crowdfunding.

Jonathan Manton (Yale University) and Lenora Schneller (Cornell University) described methods for 
better meeting user needs, the former with methods for developing an online A/V access system 
and the latter with library renovations based on open-ended survey responses. Ronald Broude of 
music reprint publisher Broude Brothers Limited gave a first-hand account of the history of music 
reprinting, including a juicy tidbit about sabotaging a competitor’s ethically questionable actions. 
A particular highlight was “Current Issues and Future Directions in Music Librarianship,” notable for 
its esteemed panel: MLA President Mark C. McKnight, MLA Vice President/President-Elect Susannah 
Cleveland, IAML Vice President Joseph Hafner, and CAML President Carolyn Doi. CAML President-
Elect Houman Behzadi facilitated the discussion. The panelists addressed a variety of challenges and 
opportunities facing the profession, including the shift away from subject specialists, diversity and 
inclusion issues such as better representing First Nations in Canadian collections, and general 
leadership advice.

The first day of the event ended with a 
reception at McGill University’s Marvin 
Duchow Music Library marking the 
opening of a new exhibit, Women, 
Work, and Song in Nineteenth-Century 
France. In a city renowned for its food, 
the delicious spread was no surprise. 
What was remarkable was the 
presentation, no mere list of thank-
yous for the exhibit. Curator Kimberly 
White provided both an overview of 
the themes covered by different parts 
of the exhibit and an introduction for 
each representative song performed by 
vocalist Catherine Harrison-Boisvert. 
Harrison-Boisvert’s evocative delivery coupled with White’s English-language descriptions made the 
performance entertaining and informative for both Francophones and Anglophones. 
 
A working group with representatives from each chapter planned the event: Houman Behzadi, 
NYSO & SQACBM; Cathy Martin, SQACBM; Lenora Schneller, NYSO; Jared Rex, NEMLA;  
Marci Cohen, NEMLA. The program committee consisted of the program chairs from each chapter: 
Sarah Funke Donovan, NEMLA; Jim Farrington, NYSO; Christiane Melançon, SQACBM. Board 
members and other representatives from the three chapters assisted with numerous other 
arrangements, including catering, registration, and the creation of a bilingual conference program.

Season’s greetings from wintery 
Saskatoon!  
The board met in early November for our 
regular fall meeting. At that time, we 
also welcomed Margaret Piper (Library 
and Archives Canada) to the table for the 
first time in her capacity as Member at 
Large. In this role, one of the areas she is 
taking on is Chair of the Awards 
Committee. They have already begun to 
organize, and you will soon see a call for 
applications on CANMUS-L and on the 
CAML website. 
Soon after the board meeting, I had the 
pleasure of attending the joint meeting 
of the Quebec Chapter of CAML 
(SQACBM), and the New York State-
Ontario (NYS/O) and New England 
(NEMLA) Chapters of the Music Library 
Association. It was great to see so many 
Canadian and American colleagues in 
attendance in Montreal. I wish to 
congratulate the Meeting Organization 
Working Group (Houman Behzadi, Cathy 
Martin, Lenora Schneller, Jared Rex, and 
Marci Cohen), who I know contributed 
many hours of volunteer time to put 
together an extremely well organized 
and engaging meeting. The two-day 
program included a number of 
presentations, several business 
meetings, a reception and exhibition 
opening at McGill’s Marvin Duchow 
Music Library, and a tour of the Quebec 
branch of the Canadian Music Centre. 
The program committee (Sarah Funke 
Donovan, Jim Farrington, and Christiane 
Melançon) organized a thoughtful and 
diverse program in both French and

La réunion d’automne du CA s’est tenue au 
début novembre. Nous y avons accueilli 
Margaret Piper (Bibliothèque et Archives 
Canada) pour la première fois en tant que 
conseillère. Dans le cadre de son nouveau 
rôle, Margaret assumera la présidence du 
comité de sélection des lauréats. Comme 
celui-ci s’est déjà attelé à la tâche, vous verrez 
sous peu un appel à candidatures sur 
CANMUS-L ainsi que sur le site Web de 
l’ACBM. 
C’est avec joie que je me suis par la suite 
rendue à la réunion conjointe de la Section 
québécoise de l’ACBM (SQACBM), de la 
section régionale de l’État de New York et de 
l’Ontario (NYS/O) et de celle de la 
Nouvelle-Angleterre (NEMLA) de la Music 
Library Association. J’ai eu le bonheur de 
rencontrer beaucoup de collègues canadiens 
et américains à Montréal. Je félicite le comité 
organisateur (Houman Behzadi, Cathy Martin, 
Lenora Schneller, Jared Rex et Marci Cohen) 
d’avoir si bien orchestré, à titre bénévole, 
cette réunion des plus intéressantes. Ce 
programme de deux jours comportait un 
certain nombre de présentations, plusieurs 
séances administratives, une réception, 
l’inauguration d’une exposition à la 
bibliothèque de musique Marvin Duchow, de 
même qu’une visite guidée du Centre de 
musique canadienne, (CMC) Québec. Le

Research”), panel presentations, and 
individual presentations on practice and 
research. I encourage you to look for the 
presentation slides and notes, which will 
be published on each chapter's website 
in the near future.  
Planning for the 2019 CAML Annual 
Conference is now well underway. Local 
Arrangements Chair Kevin Madill 
(University of British Columbia) is 
working closely with our counterparts at 
MusCan to take care of all the details 
related to room bookings, catering, 
excursions, and accommodations. Marc 
Stoeckle (University of Calgary) is 
working alongside Kevin as this year’s 
Program Chair. You can expect to see the 
call for papers in the near future on the 
CAML listserv, as well as announcements 
regarding deadlines for booking 
accommodation and registering for the 
conference.  
This issue of CAML Review features a 
report on the joint chapter meeting, one 
interview, and several reviews. I want to 
thank the entire editorial team (Cathy 
Martin, Megan Chellew, Deborah Wills, 
and Brian C. Thompson) for the 
meticulous and dedicated work that goes 
into each issue throughout the year. We 
collectively benefit from the updates on 
association business and activities, the 
critical annotation of new publications in 
our field, and professional and research 
reporting through reports and articles. 
As was mentioned at the 2018 AGM, a 
search is now underway for someone to 
take over the position of Editor. After 
many years in this role, Cathy Martin will

avec nos collègues de MusCan en ce qui 
concerne les réservations de salles, les 
services de traiteur, les sorties et 
l’hébergement. Il travaille aux côtés de 
Marc Stoeckle, le responsable du comité de la 
programmation du congrès. Dans un avenir 
rapproché, vous devriez voir affichés sur la 
liste de diffusion de l’ACBM des appels 
d’exposés, ainsi que des annonces concernant 
l’inscription au congrès et les réservations. 
Dans le présent numéro de la Revue de 
l’ACBM, vous lirez un rapport de la réunion 
conjointe, une entrevue et plusieurs comptes 
rendus. Je remercie toute l’équipe de 
rédaction (Cathy Martin, Megan Chellew, 
Deborah Wills et Brian C. Thompson) pour le 
travail méticuleux et consciencieux qu’elle 
accomplit en vue de préparer chaque 
exemplaire. Nous tirons tous profit de mises à 
jour relatives aux activités et aux démarches 
de notre association, d’analyses de nouvelles 
publications dans notre domaine ainsi que de 
rapports et d’articles de recherche 
s’appliquant à notre profession. Comme nous 
l’avons mentionné lors de l’AGA 2018, nous 
avons entamé des recherches pour trouver un 
nouveau rédacteur en chef. Après avoir joué
