Chemopreventive Effects of Lycopene in miR‐21 Knockout and Wild‐Type Pancreatic Cancer Cells

    No full text
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies, characterized by late diagnosis, rapid progression, and resistance to conventional therapies. The oncogenic microRNA miR-21 is frequently upregulated in pancreatic tumors and contributes to tumor growth, migration, and chemoresistance by targeting tumor suppressor genes. Lycopene, a naturally occurring carotenoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has shown promise as a chemopreventive agent in several cancer types. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of lycopene in human pancreatic cancer cell lines (PANC-1 and MIA PaCa-2) and their miR-21 knockout counterparts. Treatment with 50 μM lycopene significantly reduced cell viability, colony formation, migration, and spheroid integrity and decreased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, with more pronounced effects in miR-21-deficient cells. These findings highlight the role of miR-21 in modulating lycopene sensitivity and support the potential of lycopene as an adjunctive therapeutic agent in pancreatic cancer

Digital feminist activism against rape culture in universities: #Metoo in India and #RUReferenceList in South Africa

    No full text
In October 2017, Raya Sarkar, a 24-year-old Indian law student, joined the global #MeToo movement by creating a crowdsourced list on Facebook naming male Indian academics accused of sexual harassment. Similarly, a year and a half earlier, an anonymous list of men accused of sexual and gender-based violence surfaced on social media in South Africa, quickly going viral on a Rhodes University Facebook page and sparking student mobilization under the hashtag #RUReferenceList. This research draws on online data from X and Facebook in South Africa and interviews with survivors and student activists in India to explore why survivors and activists in both countries turned to social media for justice. While some critics argue that these movements undermine due process and unfairly target individuals, our findings reveal that both sought to expose broader structures of violence. They emphasize the importance of moving beyond a narrow focus on due process to develop a more nuanced, intersectional understanding of campus rape culture. Both movements highlighted power dynamics, revealing the impunity of perpetrators within institutions and the vulnerability of survivors, and prompted the creation and sharing of these lists

Helpful and unhelpful factors associated with secular psychotherapy amongst Christians: a story-stem study

    No full text
This qualitative study utilized the novel story completion method to assess perceptions toward receiving “secular” psychotherapy among 27 Christians. An inductive thematic analysis revealed that secular psychotherapy was generally viewed as positive by affording emotional containment, coping skills, and meaning-making but less helpful when a client's religious beliefs were pathologized or minimized. The findings highlight growing acceptance of psychotherapy among Christians, emphasizing the need for practitioners to respect clients’ religious worldviews. This research is relevant for professionals working with religious clients and clinical training programs aiming to address religion and spirituality in culturally and religiously syntonic forms

    Language in Written Business Communication

    No full text
Language in written business communication has been the subject of systematic study since the early 1980s. Early studies have focused mainly on register, style, and lexis. Technological advances, such as email in the late 1990s and AI more recently, have helped to shape the language of business writing in specific ways. This article analyses written business communication as the con- text against which language is discussed. It also examines the key features that characterize language in business written communication. The last sections of the article critically analyze current developments and consider future trends

An investigation into network theory and how the SDP logic model facilitates compliance and the safe handling of information

    No full text
Social media communications technology (SMCT) helps managers to extend their networks and share information. Information security is essential as regards trust and compliance. This study explains how a secure digital platform (SDP), as an organisational intervention, instils confidence in managers to utilise SMCT and engage in information sharing that facilitates resource utilisation. A theoretical SDP framework was developed by utilising network theory in conjunction with the logic model approach. An online survey (n = 207) was analysed using SEM, AMOS. The results show that a designed-in governance mechanism (DGM) plays a pivotal role in ensuring compliance (DC); at the same time, a DGM positively influences the intention to use an SDP. Also, the subjective norm (SN) positively influences the intention to use an SDP. The deployment of an SDP positively enhances business capability through the use of SMCT. This is the first study that empirically tested how governance establishes the policies and frameworks that ensure compliance, which results in strengthening an SDP and enhances business capability. The finding of this study helps managers and platform developers understand the importance of establishing governance policy and its implementation in digital network platforms to influence/facilitate safe information sharing to enhance business capability
