High School and University Students’ Partnership Program Incorporating Service-Learning and Entrepreneurship Education -Educational Effects of Social Contribution Projectsin the SAGE JAPAN Program-
departmental bulletin pape
Addressing Language Anxiety through Translanguaging in Tertiary Communication Classes
Language anxiety has been prevalent among language learners. Given so, the L1 use of learners may become inevitable in the classroom in order to ease their language anxiety. Depending on the teachers’ beliefs towards L1 presence, this occurrence may be seen as a hindrance or advantage in an English communication class. This study explores how the use of L1 can be correlated with the students’ language anxiety. The participants in this study were asked about their perspective towards translanguaging pedagogy in an English-medium classroom. The results showed the mixed perspectives of tertiary-level teachers and students towards the translanguaging approach, and how language anxiety is addressed not only with the use of L1 but also with other methods in a communication class. Since there is only a small number of participants, future research may explore how translanguaging pedagogy may address language anxiety on a nationwide scale in Japan.departmental bulletin pape

Development of a glycan repository and monosaccharide substitution matrix to strengthen the foundation of glycan informatics
創価大学博士(工学)In glycoinformatics, GlyTouCan, the international glycan structure repository, has been instrumental to properly manage the increasing numbers of glycan structures being researched in glycobiology. We have performed a major update on the GlyTouCan batch system to ensure consistency in registering its structures. In GlyTouCan, in order to search for glycan structures, currently only exact match searches have been implemented. However, the similarity of glycans could be better evaluated by creating a more versatile monosaccharide substitution matrix. Therefore, we have created a monosaccharide substitution matrix that takes into consideration not only their 3D structures but also their physicochemical
properties. In addition to searching for glycan structures, this is the first attempt to quantify the similarity of monosaccharides. We have also evaluated this substitution matrix on the human data in GlyTouCan, thus demonstrating its validity and applicability.doctoral thesi
