Japanese University Students' Perceptions of ELTs from Diverse Backgrounds

    No full text
English language education possesses significant academic and social value in Japan, with English Language Teachers (ELTs) from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds contributing to increasingly multicultural classrooms. Understanding how this diversity shapes students’ perceptions based on their experiences and expectations is very important but remains underexplored. The primary objective of this mixed-methods study was to explore Japanese university students’ perceptions of ELTs from diverse backgrounds and examine how these perceptions align with ELTs’ own experiences of teaching in Japan. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey distributed to Japanese university students, and qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with both students and ELTs. The analysis identified several key themes regarding student perceptions and teacher adaptation. Students generally viewed ELTs from diverse backgrounds positively, particularly valuing communicative approaches and intercultural content, though language proficiency differences sometimes hindered understanding. Teacher interviews revealed the complex interplay between their pedagogical choices, socio-cultural adaptation, and awareness of how they are perceived by students. These results echo existing research, highlighting ongoing tensions between internationalization policies and classroom realities. While limited by sample size, the research emphasizes the transformative potential of embracing diverse teacher identities in Japan’s evolving higher education context.departmental bulletin pape

Exploratory Needs Assessment for potential Media Literacy EFL course

    No full text
This paper presents an exploratory needs assessment for developing a media literacy curriculum tailored to Japanese ESL learners within the context of increasingly complex digital media environments. Recognizing the transformative impact of modern communication technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), the study emphasizes the necessity for learners to develop critical media competencies to navigate misinformation, evaluate sources, and engage with diverse media formats effectively. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative surveys of students and teachers with qualitative interviews of teachers and media literacy experts, aiming to identify existing gaps in digital literacy, AI literacy, and critical thinking skills among the target population. Findings reveal that students demonstrate moderate media literacy, with potential deficiencies in analytical skills and AI literacy levels. Additionally, students predominantly favor audiovisual media, primarily social media and online videos, but show limited engagement with traditional sources such as newspapers. Teachers were found to employ various strategies to promote critical thinking, including source evaluation and analysis of cultural perspectives. Experts concur that authentic materials and discussions fostering multi-perspective analysis are essential for cultivating media literacy. Furthermore, the study discusses technological challenges, notably technostress among educators, which hampers the effective integration of digital tools. Addressing these issues through targeted training and support is deemed vital to ensure sustainable implementation. Overall, the paper advocates for a curriculum that bridges literacy gaps, integrates AI comprehension, emphasizes critical evaluation, and adopts technology thoughtfully to mitigate educator burden. By doing so, the paper aims to equip Japanese EFL students with essential skills to critically interpret, evaluate, and ethically engage with digital media in an AI-influenced landscape, fostering informed global citizens and improved language proficiency in the digital age.departmental bulletin pape

    No full text
departmental bulletin pape

    No full text
This study investigates the role of teacher collaboration between English Language and content instructors (particularly social studies) in enhancing essay writing skills among students in Ghanaian Grade ‘C’ senior high schools. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered from 284 participants, including 261 students, 13 English teachers, 9 Social Studies teachers, and 3 Heads of Departments. Methods of data collection included Google Form questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of curriculum documents. A central focus of the study was to examine how different stakeholders perceive cross-curricular collaboration and the impact on students’ writing development. Findings revealed notable variation in perspectives across the three participant groups. English teachers acknowledged the importance of integrating content knowledge into writing instruction but expressed concerns about time constraints and lack of institutional support. Social studies teachers recognized the relevance of writing skills but viewed essay instruction as primarily the responsibility of English teachers. Heads of Departments, on the other hand, emphasized the need for coordinated efforts but noted the absence of formal structures to facilitate such collaboration. Despite these differing views, all groups agreed that cross-disciplinary alignment could improve writing outcomes. The study concludes by recommending structured, school-wide collaboration as a practical and necessary step toward improving writing proficiency and bridging subject-area divides.departmental bulletin pape

departmental bulletin pape

Doctrinal Classification in Xue Tiantai Zong Famen Dayi: With a Focus on the Reception of Jingxi Zhanran's Teaching

    No full text
This paper examines the doctrinal classification( 教判説) in Xue Tiantai Zong Famen Dayi( 学天台宗法門大意), a text attributed to Xingman( 行満) Focusing on Xingman’s reception of teachings from Jingxi Zhanran( 荊溪 湛然), a key figure in the revival of Chinese Tiantai Buddhism, this study analyzes how Xingman’s framework reflects a process of standardization and reinterpretation among Zhanran’s followers. The paper argues that while Xingman’s doctrine closely aligns with Zhanran’s system, it raises questions about whether Zhanran’s teachings can be considered “traditional” in relation to earlier Tiantai figures. By situating the text within Tang dynasty scholasticism, the study contributes to understanding doctrinal transmission in medieval East Asian Buddhism.departmental bulletin pape

The Current State of Family Education for Young Children

The purpose of the study was to clarify the current situation and issues by focusing on the experiences of young children in their homes and communities, which are the foundation for their growth. As a result, we found that “shrinking household size” decreases opportunities for children to learn and realize how to live with consideration for others, that “convenient life” makes it difficult for children to encounter situations that enhance their sense of self-usefulness and nurture their moral development, and that “change in play” means that children lose opportunities to grow while gaining a variety of emotional experiences with a diverse range of friends. The “change in play” has resulted in the loss of opportunities for children to grow while gaining a variety of emotional experiences with a diverse group of friends.departmental bulletin pape
