The Impact of Peer Mentorship in Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia Programs: A Scoping Review
No full textAbstractProblem statement: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) programs are known fortheir rigorous curriculum, which predisposes Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) tochallenges such as mental health issues, stress, and isolation.Purpose: Review the literature and assess gaps in the literature to determine if peer mentorshipprograms benefit SRNAs’ well-being, promote support, reduce stress, and improve retention.Method: Databases were searched using keywords and inclusion criteria. Studies wereconsidered if they discussed peer mentorship in students, healthcare professionals, or nursing.Patterns and themes were assessed to derive conclusions from the literature available. ThePopulation, Concept, and Context framework was used to guide the literature search.Analysis: Feedback from current literature on peer mentorship programs was evaluated forcommon themes, as well as gaps in the literature that can be utilized to guide future SRNA peermentorship programs. The need for additional research was also evaluated.Implication for practice: Promotion of the success and well-being of SRNAs through peermentorship programs may lead to stress reduction, self-efficacy, and retention, which in turn,promotes nursing retention and improved patient outcomes/safety
