Multitopic Corannulene-Porphyrin Hosts for Fullerenes: A Three-Layer Scaffold for Precisely Designed Supramolecular Ensembles
A method to synthesize coplanar dimeric porphyrins bearing eight corannulene units has been developed. It relies on the stability of octahedral CO-capped Ru(II) complexes linked by N-donor ligands. This specific arrangement provides an optimal scaffold to accommodate fullerenes by imposing corannulene groups at precise distance and relative orientation. Their capabilities for C60 recognition have been thoroughly assessed, revealing that each system can encapsulate up to four buckyballs, giving rise to a compact supramolecular complex echoing a discrete donor-acceptor-donor trilayer offer-ing significant potential properties for further exploitationThe authors thank the SpanishMinistry of Science and Innovation (MCIN) (PID2021-124691NB-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER,UE) for funding. Unlocking the Limitations of layered LiNiO2: Insights from DFT Simulations on its Viability as a Cathode Material for Aqueous Lithium-Ion Batteries
Aqueous lithium-ion batteries (ALiBs) present a promising avenue for safer and more sustainable energy storage solutions compared to traditional non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries. LiNiO2 (LNO) has emerged as a potential cathode material for ALiBs due to its high capacity potential and ability to facilitate Li⁺ intercalation over H⁺ intercalation in aqueous media. However, challenges remain regarding its stability and performance in aqueous electrolytes. In this study, we employ periodic density functional theory simulations to investigate the interactions between LNO surfaces and aqueous electrolytes, evaluating its viability as a cathode material for ALiBs. We have systematically and exhaustively studied the surface energetics, shedding light on the formation of NiOOHx species, one of the common issues associated with this material. We have evaluated the oxygen evolution reaction on LNO surfaces, revealing that they decompose water molecules into hydroxide and other intermediate species, thereby degrading the electrolyte. Our findings suggest that, despite their promising abilities for Li+ ion intercalation, the tendency to boost the generation of NiOOHx and its facility to decompose water at potentials lower than 1.23 V are important limitations for the battery performanceS.P.-P. appreciates the economic support of Marie Curie fellowship (H2020-MSCA-IF- 2020–101020330). Texture-Driven Reformulation of Pork Liver Mousse with Reduced Allergenic Components
Since allergies associated with the consumption of pork are rare, this work proposes to use a pork liver extract with a neutral odour and excellent foaming properties both to reduce the presence of liver in the formulation of a mousse, thus minimising its strong impact on flavour, and as an alternative to egg due to its allergenicity. The results obtained showed that it was possible to replace up to 20 % of the liver in the initial formulation without affecting the mousse texture, and with a remarkable improvement in its olfactory characteristics. Although it was not possible to eliminate whole eggs due to the good emulsifying properties of the yolk, egg whites - i.e., the most allergenic egg fraction- could be completely replaced with liver protein extract. Next, to minimise the presence of allergens, the substitution of butter with different proportions of lard and pork backfat was tested. It was observed that pork backfat contributed to denser, harder and more consistent mousses than lard with no negative effects on the resistance to spread and adhesivity of mousses. But, considering the textural and olfactory characteristics of the mousses, it can be kept that including lard and pork backfat in a ratio of 60:40 was a suitable combination to replace butterThis work was supported by the Government of Spain [project reference RTA2017–00024-C04–02
The Observatory for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (OEIAC) has developed an interactive tool, the PIO Model, to determine whether or not an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system and its data is ready and comply with current legislative requirements as well as ethical standards and recommendations. The PIO Model promotes compliance and readiness on responsible use of AI through a comprehensive self-assessment checklist. It identifies appropriate actions through several questions linked to regulations and ethical standards, and raises awareness to the quadruple helix on the responsible use of data and AI systems. Further, this free and comprehensive checklist helps to classify the risk level of an AI system and facilitates an understanding of what needs to be done under the EU AI Act. It is a resource open to everyone and currently available in Catalan, Spanish, English and French. The PIO Model developed is part of CATALONIA.AI, the Artificial Intelligence Strategy of Catalonia promoted by the Government of CataloniaL'Observatori d'Ètica en Intel·ligència Artificial (OEIAC) ha desenvolupat una eina interactiva, el Model PIO, per determinar si un sistema d'Intel·ligència Artificial (IA) i les seves dades estan preparats i compleixen amb els requisits legislatius actuals, així com amb els estàndards ètics i les recomanacions. Asimismo, presento desafíos que desde las relaciones generacionales hemos experimentado en el esfuerzo por hacernos parte del desmontaje del adultocentrismoThis text is an essay of several ideas that arise from research and direct‑action work with youth and communities where young people live, on strategies in development to confront adultcentrism and try to build alternatives in order to overcome it. In this text I call those dynamics dismantle adultcentrism.Based on three plans of action he ref lected on clues: for its dismantling as a power structure that has consolidated a social order; to build new epistemologies from popular youth; to anticipate relationships between generations in pursuit of solidarity and generational justice. The purpose of this essay is to contribute keys to the analysis of the adult‑centric dominance system and to delve into experiences for its dismantling. I also present challenges that we have experienced from generational relationships in the effort to become part of the dismantling of adultcentrism
Hydrogen Evolution and Carbon Dioxide Reduction Pathways on Graphitic Carbon Nitride Decorated by Single-Atom of Transition Metals
The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable products represents a promising strategy to mitigate CO2 emissions and enable sustainable energy storage. However, the development of efficient and selective catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) remains a significant challenge. In this study, we explore the performance of first-row transition metal single atoms anchored on g-C3N4 monolayers as potential catalysts for CO2RR. We employed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as a competing pathway to CO2RR. Only the candidates that suppress HER are promising candidates for the selective CO2RR. Our results indicate that Ni1/C3N4 emerges as the most promising catalyst due to its relatively moderate-high overpotential for HER and a favorable reaction pathway that favors CO production through the HCOO* intermediate. Despite some challenges, such as the strong Ni-CO interaction hindering CO desorption, Ni1/C3N4 presents a viable route for CO2RR. Mn and Co single atoms exhibit slightly lower but still promising overpotential towards HER. Nevertheless, Co1/C3N4 clearly shows a preference for HER due to the large barriers of CO hydrogenation and HCOOH production, while Mn1/C3N4 opens the route of formic acid production. This work highlights the importance of evaluating HER alongside CO2RR to identify catalysts with optimal selectivity and efficiencyA.P. and M.S. thank the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/50110001103) for projects PID2021-127423NB-I00 and PID2023-147424NB-I00, and the Generalitat de Catalunya for project 2021SGR623 and ICREA Academia 2019 awarded to A.P. and 2024 to M.S. Analysis of the influence of dance movement therapy inspired by Marian Chace in the improvement of somatic and mental symptoms of individuals suffering from anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder in times of crisis
ENG- In recent years, the interconnection between body psychology and affective neuroscience has been offering new therapeutic approaches and a renewed perspective on understanding emotional disorders. One of the approaches that is accumulating empirical evidence is the use of dance as an alternative or complementary form of psychological intervention. The relationship between dance therapy, body psychology, and affective neuroscience emphasizes the integration of body and mind to promote emotional well-being, psychological balance, and mental health. From this perspective, it is argued that the impact of emotional and traumatic experiences is not only found in the mind but also in the body. This is why some authors refer to it as "the embodied mind." Although there are various approaches that employ dance therapy, one of the most documented to date is Dance Movement Therapy (DMT). The research we present, through three studies, applies DMT to individuals suffering from an anxiety disorder (AD) or anxious symptoms, as well as to those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anxiety disorders are a broad term used to describe a variety of disorders characterized by disproportionate feelings of fear, restlessness, worry, and apprehension. Patients suffering from anxiety lack coping and self-regulation skills, struggle to control disruptive thought patterns, and tend to have catastrophic ideas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was estimated that stress and anxiety levels in the general population were considerably high. On the other hand, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is particularly observed in individuals who have experienced various types of potentially traumatic situations, such as violence or the threat of violence, whether in intimate or collective violence scenarios. Although DMT is primarily conducted in a group and in-person setting, this thesis will present, in the first study, an alternative, virtual, and individual design to be used in situations of confinement or other crises that make group and in-person dance impossible. Additionally, a careful coding system of the changes experienced by participants throughout the sessions is presented as the focal challenge of the second and third studies. The general objective of the thesis has been to demonstrate the effectiveness of dance movement therapy in reducing or eliminating symptoms of anxiety and the inherent suffering associated with having experienced potentially traumatic situations. The results show how DMT can be effectively used in various contexts, highlighting its relevance in contemporary mental health practicesCAT- En els últims anys la interconnexió entre la psicologia corporal i les neurociències afectives està oferint noves aproximacions terapèutiques i una renovada mirada a la comprensió dels trastorns emocionals.
