The construction, first of the fort of Montjuïc and then of the tower of Sant Joan, provided important protection in Girona, although it was not complete. Many of the problems were concentrated in the fact that the fortifications were too close to the city and did not have sufficient capacity to control the accesses located to the north of the Barrufa mountain. The siege of the winter of 1710/1 revealed this for the freedom of movement available to French soldiers. After the war of the Spanish Succession, a long period of peace began that allowed a succession of projects, although nothing was executed until the War of the First Coalition (1793-1795). The construction of the towers of Sant Narcís, Sant Lluís and Sant Daniel, between 1794 and 1795, was the chosen option, although not entirely successful. During the military operations of the Napoleonic War in Girona (1808-1809), the towers were protagonists for a short time, in the first months of the second siege (May and June 1809). Once the war was over, new plans advised to reinforce that sector, but he did not execute any workLa construcció, primer, del fort de Montjuïc i, després, de la torre de Sant Joan, proporcionà una important protecció a Girona, tot i que no fou completa.
The life of Esteve Comas Grabalosa is the account of a political militancy; of commitment, defeat, clandestinity, and repression as a member of the POUM. It is the story of a downfall, the consequence of the revolution in the rear-guard during the Spanish Civil War; a misfortune that, despite everything, did not break his convictionsLa vida d’Esteve Comas Grabalosa és el relat d’una militància política; del compromís, la derrota, la clandestinitat i la repressió d’un militant del POUM.
Empowering microbial proteins: Continuous electro-fermentation of hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria from water, urea and carbon dioxide
The global demand for sustainable protein sources is driving research into microbial protein production, with hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria identified as particularly promising candidates. This research investigates the optimization of nutrient assimilation and biomass (protein) production in a continuous electro-fermentation process. A deeper understanding of substrate consumption patterns in long-term, continuous operation, an often overlooked aspect, will be key to maximizing both productivity and process stability. In this study, oxygen and hydrogen were produced in situ through water electrolysis, while carbon dioxide and urea-derived nitrogen were used as the main nutrient sources. Over 500 days of continuous operation, the process maintained stable performance while production was progressively enhanced through targeted adjustments in operating conditions. While stable operation consistently yielded 2.6-2.8 g TSS L−1 d−1, peak productivity of 3.7 g TSS L−1 d−1 was reached at a 20-h hydraulic retention time (HRT) under high hydrogen availability, highlighting the importance of balancing nitrogen supply and HRT to achieve sustainable microbial protein production. Under optimized conditions, biomass protein content reached 90 %, demonstrating the potential to modulate biomass composition through operational strategies. These findings provide new insight into the stoichiometric balance of electro-fermentation and its potential for scalable, sustainable protein productionL.R-A is supported by the IPOSDOC23/01 grant. Balancing individual and community dimensions: educators' narratives on youth empowerment
Purpose This article analyses the dimensions of youth empowerment in educators' socio-educational narratives. The aims are to identify which dimensions are present, review their interrelationships and examine how educators foster them in their interventions. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative study was conducted using notes from field journals and ideas shared by educators in focus groups. The study explores the dimensions of youth empowerment in educators' socio-educational work. Findings The results indicate that educators often focus on youth empowerment from an individual rather than a community perspective, emphasizing self-esteem, autonomy and critical capacity. However, in highlighting accompaniment and proximity in their work with young people, their discourses also reveal an intention to balance individual and community dimensions, underlining the need for reflective spaces in addition to action. Originality/value This study enhances understanding of how educators perceive and promote youth empowerment in their socio-educational work. It highlights trends and challenges in balancing individual and community dimensions of empowerment and underscores the importance of creating reflective spaces in youth empowerment practicesThis study was supported by the project “Learning through young people's social participation. Its contribution to youth empowerment in youth trajectories.

Design of a small sustainable wind blade
The European Union is committed to becoming the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050. To this end, member countries have outlined a long-term strategy to achieve this goal. Among the cross-cutting elements that will make this possible is the Circular Economy. In this context, the aim is to reduce raw materials by extending the useful life of products, reusing them, recycling materials, etc. In the wind energy sector, between 80 and 90% of wind turbines are currently recycled. Wind turbine blades, manufactured mainly from composites, are difficult to recycle in terms of economic efficiency. Even so, several technical solutions currently exist at varying levels of technological maturity. The work presented is the design of a sustainable wind turbine blade, replacing the epoxytype thermosetting resins used until now with a thermoplastic resin with similar mechanical properties, with the advantage that the composites produced are easily recyclable. This new liquid thermoplastic resin, AKELITE, patented by the CSIC group, is capable of producing sustainable and 100% circular composite materials. A 3D CAD model was created from a series of cross-sections of the blade. This model describes the blade&aposs aerodynamic surface, so that in the finite element design phase (ANSYS Workbench), the laminate is defined from the outside in. The laminate design prioritizes longitudinal stiffness, ensuring the presence of layers in all traditional layers (0°, 90°, and ±45°), maintaining symmetry, and progressively reducing thickness from root to tip. The blade was subsequently manufactured and finally tested. The blade is currently being recycled for subsequent life cycle analysis. This work is part of a project under the call for 'Projects aimed at the ecological transition and the digital transition' with the participation of three research groups: CIEMAT, the University of Girona, and the CSIC
The Catalan Proverbis de Salomó is a collection of roughly one hundred admonitions and wisdom sentences preserved in three didactic-moral miscellanies copied between the last quarter of the 14th and the first third of the 15th century. Although all three witnesses have been described and edited, the collection had not received the critical attention it deserved, particularly considering its prominent role in the transmission of medieval Catalan wisdom and proverbial literature. Because of this, this work focuses mainly on the analysis of the manuscript contexts in which the text appears and the overall configuration of the miscellanies it participates in. Furthermore, a study of the textual relationships among the three witnesses and a brief exploration of the thematic structure of the collection is included.
Neighbourhood organization as a way of addressing vulnerability: a case study of a community mediation programme in Olot, Spain
This article explores how neighbourhood organization can address urban vulnerability through a community mediation programme in Olot, Spain. Based on qualitative research, it examines how residents navigate conflict, fragmentation, and segregation. Adopting a critical view, the programme frames cohesion as a dynamic process involving disagreement and collective struggle. Findings show that community mediation can foster everyday relationships, revalue marginalized spaces, and support political participation. However, it also exposes its limits when facing structural inequalities. The article argues that community mediation is not just about dispute resolution but a political practice enabling residents to reclaim agency and build more inclusive neighbourhood
How social and educational professionals define their contribution to youth empowerment
The aim of this paper was to describe the vision of social and educational professionals regarding their contribution to each of the dimensions of youth empowerment, and to determine how personal factors influence this vision. Using a self-administered questionnaire completed by a validated sample of 696 social and educational professionals (social workers, youth workers, social educators, teachers likely to apply a social pedagogical perspective), an analysis was carried out which showed that certain personal and professional variables were significant (gender, size of municipality, professional field and specific training in youth), while others were not (professional experience, age or level of study). The results show that specialised and varied training and empowered professionals become key factors contributing to youth empowerment. Finally, some suggestions and recommendations emerge that can have an impact both on the training of these social and educational professionals and on the intervention practices and dynamics themselve
El treball s’emmarca en una voluntat transformadora i neix d’un vincle personal i associatiu amb el país, amb l’objectiu de contribuir a futures intervencions més arrelades, contextualitzades i respectuosesThis paper explores the life trajectories of individuals in The Gambia who have experienced, or not, forced marriage, in order to identify the key factors influencing each path. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the research examines the role of family and community pressure, religion, legal frameworks, and economic and educational conditions, while also considering the impact of gender. The study is grounded in a respectful approach, seeking to understand local perspectives from within rather than imposing an external view. The analysis highlights both the vulnerabilities and the forms of resistance and agency present in contexts where forced marriage is socially accepted.
