Software-Based Shielding: a machine learning approach to address RFID inventory accuracy in retail stores
Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been widely used primarily for tracking and identifying objects in supply chains.
The fashion retail industry has been leading its adoption, primarily for the manifold use cases the technology enables for manufacturers, retailers and end consumers.
These use cases range from increased productivity and accuracy in inbound outbound processes, to inventory accuracy and replenishment from the backroom in the stores.
RFID deployments in fashion stores typically leverage both handheld RFID readers, which can be adjusted for different reading ranges, or fixed readers with wider coverage for real time inventory counts, but less precise localization.
To prevent errors and false reads (that is reading a tag in the store area from an inventory count carried out in the backroom and vice versa), both handheld and fixed readers need physical shielding materials, like metal foils on store walls, to contain the RFID signals within specific areas, typically backroom area and sales floor area. However, this approach has drawbacks, including cost, limited flexibility, low scalability, and aesthetic concerns, especially in open sales floor layouts.
A recent study by G. Esposito, Mezzogori, Neroni, Rizzi, and Romagnoli introduced a software-based shielding approach that eliminates the need for physical barriers between backrooms and store area. This method uses item-level tags and a machine learning algorithms to estimate tag locations without physical shielding. The SBS approach is more cost-effective and flexible, with an average accuracy of around 95%. However, it was tested in a specific scenario with plasterboard walls and fixed room sizes.
This study aims to assess various methods for indoor item localization using passive RFID tags, addressing stationary and moving objects' detection and tracking. It also evaluates the Software-Based Shielding approach with different wall types, thickness, tag arrangements, and densities. The findings related to this activity were published in a dedicated paper by Neroni, Rizzi, Romagnoli, and Rosa.
The performance of Software-Based Shielding was further tested in two fashion retail stores in Bologna and Milan, Italy, While the brand name is kept confidential, these tests evaluate the approach's accuracy in real retail environments considering factors like reader models, power levels, and classification methods. The results pertaining to this topic were published in a dedicated paper by Mezzogori, Rizzi, Romagnoli, and Rosa.
The study also aims at implementing the SBS algorithm into the id-Bridge RFID platform suite developed by Murata ID Solutions.
In conclusion, this research demonstrates that Software-Based Shielding is a practical solution for improving inventory count processes in fashion retail stores, avoiding the need of physical barriers between store backroom and sales floor. It saves time, ensures accurate item tracking, and is adaptable to various environments, making it a valuable tool for broader adoption.
Future work will be aimed at assessing the performance of the implemented algorithm in different real case applications, in order to better understand its practical scalability, implications and performances

Social cognition in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia : a narrative review
In the last few years, the importance of social cognition assessment to characterize dementia
sindrome has been recognised. Both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia
(FTD) are characterised by impairments in different aspects of social cognition such as theory
of mind that allows the recognition of the mental states at the base of others' behaviours,
emotion recognition, and empathy; these impairments have attracted great attention in the
international literature.
In the first part of this dissertation, an in-depth description of Alzheimer's disease, which is
the most common cause of dementia in the world, characterised by progressive behavioural
and cognitive deficits affecting daily activities, will be provided. A description of
frontotemporal dementia defined by progressive degeneration of nerve cells located in the
frontal and temporal lobes of the brain will be also provided. The second chapter will focus
on the definition of social cognition, its sub-components and the neural substrates that
underpin it, since there is evidence that social cognitive deficits hinder an individual's social
interaction and negatively affect interpersonal function. In the last part we will focus on a
review of the scientific papers in which the presence of deterioration of social cognition in
AD and FTD patients has been identified. We will focus on studies in which the levels of
association of sub-components of social function have been investigated and on those that
have studied whether the presence of a socio-cognitive deficit can flag the early signs of
worsening of the disease and lead to an aggravation of the psychological condition of the
patient in their daily conduct
Insediamento, sviluppo e ruoli del microbiota intestinale nell'infanzia
Based on the widely accepted sterile womb paradigm, the fetal environment can be regarded as nearly sterile, and the first microbial colonization of the newborn’s gut is believed to occur during delivery and shortly after birth through a combination of vertical transmission from the mother and horizontal acquisition from other humans and the environment. Following the first seeding, the gut microbiota evolves substantially, reaching complete maturation within the first three years of life. However, this process is influenced and can be disturbed by several external factors, such as maternal diet, gestational age, delivery mode, feeding type, and antibiotic use.
Given that inadequate gut microbiota development in early life is frequently associated with neonatal and long-term adverse health conditions, understanding the processes that govern initial colonization and development of the infant gut microbial community is of great importance.
The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to explore the engraftment and evolution of the infant gut microbiota by exploiting the most reliable genomic, metagenomic, and phylogenomic approaches. Within this framework, strain-level tracking of gut commensals revealed that beneficial, maternally inherited bifidobacterial species constitute highly stable and resilient communities, identifying host’s sex as a potential variable affecting the long-term persistence of these microorganisms through infancy. In addition to developmental changes in composition, this Ph.D. thesis also explores the functional maturation of the healthy human gut microbiota by tracing the microbial genetic potential for bioactive metabolites from infancy to adulthood, specifically emphasizing the early stages of life.
As vaginal-derived microbes can be implicated in the first seeding of the infant gut microbiota, one of the purposes of this Ph.D. thesis is to unravel the composition of the vaginal microbiota across the population, performing detailed genome comparative analyses of Lactobacillus crispatus and Gardnerella vaginalis species, which are notoriously associated with vaginal health and potential dysbiotic status, respectively.
As mentioned above, various perinatal factors can significantly impact the developmental trajectories of the nascent gut-associated microbial community. Among these, gestational age at birth is regarded as one of the most impactful, as it dictates the degree of immaturity of several infant’s organs, including intestinal and immune systems. Consistently, premature birth and low birth weight (< 1,500 gr) have been associated with an increased risk of Necrotizing EnteroColitis (NEC). In this context, this Ph.D. thesis explores the gut microbiota composition of preterm infants affected by NEC and prior to NEC onset to identify possible early microbial and functional biomarkers of this severe disease.
Given the broadly observed link between early-life depletion of Bifidobacterium genus and host diseases, members of this genus are increasingly used as potential players in restoring gastrointestinal functions. Accordingly, in this Ph.D. thesis, the genetic traits involved in growth, microbe-host, and microbe-microbe interactions of bifidobacterial strains were explored, with a particular focus on B. longum subsp. infantis members. Moreover, common bifidobacterial genomes used in commercial probiotic products were used to build a free-access genomic database named Integrated Probiotic DataBase (IPDB).
Finally, considering the bidirectional association between host's factors and the gut microbiota composition, in this Ph.D. thesis, we determine the impact of different human lifestyles, i.e., sedentary or athletic, on the gut microbiota composition, showing that the host and the bacterial community inhabiting the gut are continuously crosstalking, mutually modulating each other throughout lifespan
Behavioral and contextual modulation of yawning in macaques : the possible role of ventral premotor neurons
Yawning, often considered a stereotyped behavior, involves paroxysmal and involuntary movement primarily affecting oral and nek motor districts. While subcortical structures are thought to primarily regulate its motor patterns, much of our current knowledge stems from rat experiments, with research on non-human primates (NHPs) remaining limited and heavily relying on behavioral observations and clinical studies. Yawning exhibits a complexity beyond common perception, influenced by both endogenous and social dynamics, and potentially subjected to partial voluntary control. In NHPs, yawning likely serves communicative functions, possibly signaling an individual’s physical and mental state and/or coordinating behavior within a group.
We employed wireless neural recording systems to monitor single neuron activity in the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) of freely moving monkeys in two different settings: the NeuroEthoRoom (NER), a plexiglass enclosure for neuroethological studies in NHPs, and the animals’ home-cage. We identified PMv neurons that responded either exclusively to yawning (yawn-selective neurons) or to yawn in addition to different mouth and mouth-forelimb behaviors used as controls (yawn-related neurons). Importantly, we observed that these neurons did not exhibit a correlation with the kinematic parameters of yawning, such as mouth opening and head elevation. To further validate our findings, we integrated physiological data with the outcomes of Intracortical Microstimulation (ICMS), revealing a positive association between the cortical sites where yawn-responsive neurons were identified and their causal link with ICMS evoked mouth movements. Moreover, we discovered yawn-responsive neurons that exclusively responded in the NER but not in the home-cage, while others displayed consistent responses across both contexts. This contextual selectivity could not be attributed to variations in yawning displays across contexts. Even when considering yawns with consistent displays (e.g. teeth exposure), there was no difference in the duration, yet variations persisted in neuronal responses. These findings shed light on the cortical mechanisms underlying yawning in NHPs and highlight potential contextual influences on its regulation by top-down neural signals
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and Childhood Absence Epilepsy : a study of comorbidity
METHODS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to provide a narrative review of the literature, in addition to theoretical overviews on CAE, ADHD, and attention, to examine the comorbidity between ADHD and CAE. It considers clinical data and pathophysiological origins of this association. The study also investigates specific characteristics in patients with this comorbidity, as well as attention deficits not attributable to ADHD in children with CAE. Furthermore, the narrative review attempts to address therapeutic approaches and prognostic perspectives related to this comorbidity.
RESULTS: Clinical data reveal frequent attentional issues in children with CAE, with a high overlap of typical ADHD symptoms, particularly of the inattentive subtype, compared to the general population. The relationship between CAE and ADHD is complex, as CAE can be misdiagnosed as ADHD and vice versa. Specifically, children with CAE often exhibit interictal attentional impairments not diagnosable as ADHD, which may persist despite effective treatment of epileptic seizures. Studies have found significant differences in attention assessment scores between children with CAE and healthy control groups. The analysis showed greater distractibility and higher supervision needs in children with CAE compared to controls. Further research using the Continuous Performance Task (CPT) confirmed these results, demonstrating interictal attentional impairments in children with CAE through increased omission errors and longer reaction times compared to controls. Interictal attentional impairments were also found in tasks assessing divided attention and readiness. Analysis of symptomatic comorbidity between CAE and ADHD revealed greater intensity of inattentive symptoms in children with ADHD compared to those exclusively with CAE, according to the Attention Deficit Disorder Evaluation Scale—Home Version (ADDES-HV). Comparing attention profiles, higher commission errors were observed in subjects with CAE and ADHD compared to controls.
Studies on the pathophysiology of attention deficits in CAE have shown reduced activation of the anterior insula and the medial prefrontal cortex (MFC), with more compromised brain connectivity in the right hemisphere. Regarding common pathophysiological bases between CAE and ADHD, the importance of the Default Mode Network (DMN) emerges, with hyperactivation in subjects with ADHD and functional abnormalities in children with absence seizures.
Regarding therapy, the efficacy of drugs such as ethosuximide, valproic acid, and lamotrigine has been investigated in CAE patients. Ethosuximide appears to be the optimal monotherapy as it has been found to be the most effective drug in controlling seizures and has shown fewer negative impacts on attentional dysfunction compared to other drugs.
As for prognosis, current literature lacks specific studies on the long-term evolution of ADHD in patients with CAE and primarily focuses on psychosocial implications, highlighting greater academic difficulties, behavioral problems, more complex family and peer relationships, and a higher prevalence of psychiatric and emotional problems compared to controls.
CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge landscape regarding the comorbidity between CAE and ADHD remains incomplete, especially concerning therapy with newer generation antiseizure medications and prognosis. Additionally, there is a need to deepen understanding of the pathophysiology underlying the comorbidity between CAE and ADHD. Implementing targeted interventions on prognosis of attention deficits associated with CAE would be beneficial. These interventions might include early diagnosis followed by timely treatment at symtpoms onset, support and guidance for both the family and the social context, as well as the management of additional comorbidities
Hematological and biochemical parameters in captive lemurs (L. catta and Varecia Variegata)
This study investigates the hematological and biochemical parameters of two lemur species, Lemur catta and Varecia variegata, across different age groups over a three-year period, providing insights into the health management of these species in captivity. Despite the relatively large sample size, variations in sample collection over the years were noted. The results reveal significant interspecies differences, such as in RBC and lipase levels. Contrary to what is reported in the literature, no significant age-related variations were observed in red blood cell counts in either species, while biochemical parameters remained stable across different life stages. These findings highlight the need for tailored dietary and health management protocols for captive lemurs, particularly regarding glucose and creatinine levels, which showed significant differences between species and compared to reference values. The study concludes with recommendations for future research, including the need for more consistent sampling and exploration of the impact of environmental enrichment and social dynamics on health parameters in lemurs
Urban Roots: Modular and replicable urban gardens for the regeneration of open decommissioned spaces
- alimentazione sostenibile
- sostenibilità ambientale
- sostenibilità socialeStarting from an urban and social need related to the presence of disused, abandoned or degraded open spaces, the project proposes urban regeneration interventions through the creation and maintenance of urban gardens.
Through the analysis of urban gardens implemented in different parts of the world, a design proposal is developed that is characterized by replicability in different city contexts and modularity, ensuring configurations adaptable to different needs and heterogeneous environments.
The design involves a pathway from the producer, ideally engaged in social inclusion activities, to the “km 0” consumer located within the same territory.
The work is divided into three main macro-themes:
- sustainable food
- environmental sustainability
- social sustainabilit
Inclusion of persons with coeliac disease in relation to consumer premises
In this thesis paper, we wish to give voice to the specific requests, from some users, such as users with celiac disease, with respect to the consumption that takes place at consumption premises. At first, a brief clarification is presented describing the reasons why the paper is concerned with the specific inclusion of people with celiac disease with respect to consumption premises, instead of attending to other types of intolerances.
Following this intervention, it is intended, through this paper, to pay attention toward the world of celiac disease, addressing it through two types of analysis, a desk type analysis and a field type analysis, which can complement each other so as to provide as complete a picture as possible toward the phenomenon taken under analysis.
The first type of analysis allows for the investigation of the history, spread, and different types of manifestation of the phenomenon, complemented by scientific knowledge reporting the explanation of celiac disease and its different forms at the symptom level. The analysis first places attention toward an international view, later focusing toward the national view of the Italian state. The desk type of analysis, places attention toward the research of different types of case studies, through which to investigate the multiple ways in which celiac disease is currently addressed in Italy, from the catering side to the communication side.
The second type of analysis, arises as necessary in order to integrate, through direct contact with the celiac user, aspects that unite or differentiate this type of user in the act of consumption, confirming or implementing the results of the desk type analysis. Against the two categories of analysis used, it was deemed necessary to segment the user types by identifying: celiac user, restaurant user, informed non-celiac user, uninformed non-celiac user. Following the reported subdivision, criticality maps were defined reflecting three groups of user categories: celiac user, caterer, non-celiac user, arriving at the definition of three specific project outcomes clustered by the headings: training, policy making, information. In comparison with the experience given by the analysis and the scope of action of the outcomes, it was dealt with through the design elaboration of the training cluster. In the elaboration, attention was paid toward five different types of targets: children up to ten years old, adolescents between eleven and fifteen years old, adolescents between sixteen and nineteen years old, adult consumer
and adult restaurateur.
The project output generated, in the present elaboration, stands as a Notebook of Training Activities, through which, in a hypothetical application of the proposed formats, socially defined positive changes can be generated, such as: restaurateurs more trained and predisposed, non-celiac user educated to new inviting tastes and textures, celiac user fulfilled and recognized
Impact of digital dentistry on clinical practice, research and education
In recent years, digital workflows and technologies have revolutionized clinical practice, research and education. The term “Digital Dentistry” encompasses digital imaging, intraoral scanners, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing workflows and three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies. Therefore, underscoring the profound impact of digital dentistry on the dental field, this thesis focused on various subjects.
3D printing technologies were investigated for educational purposes, with the aim to create patient-specific training models. A systematic revision was conducted on this topic, and two workflows were defined to obtain patient-specific models from radiological images.
Intraoral scanners were thoroughly analyzed, assessing their accuracy in implant-prosthetic treatments and searching for predictable errors. Furthermore, an innovative technique called 'Reverse Subgingival Scan' was introduced to improve accuracy in fixed prosthodontics.
The accuracy of 3D printed surgical guides, widely used in implant surgery, was explored analyzing different 3D printing technologies and guide sizes.
In conclusion, the research focused on the development of 3D-printed scaffolds that can address bone defects and tissue engineering in oral surgery
