The Science of Reading, Writing, and Dual and English Language Learners
Get PDFThis paper presents an evidence-based approach to meeting the needs of dual language and English Language Learners (ELL) that includes leveraging the skills and knowledge of the home language, oral language instruction, and the utilization of both effective writing instruction and multicultural children’s literature. This evidence-based approach includes insights gleaned from the science of reading (SOR) and research on writing development with ELLs and instruction needed to help their written communication skills. Practical classroom applications for using multicultural children’s literature include integrating the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to ensure the literature chosen is necessary for some and beneficial for all. The purpose of this paper is to help educators make the vital connections between their students’ home language and research garnered from the science of reading, writing instruction, and the use of multicultural children’s literature, and it seeks to help educators continue to find ways to give a voice to their dual and English Language Learners

No full textThe presentation Censorship Is Still a Drag explores the escalating challenges facing libraries as they strive to uphold intellectual freedom amid rising censorship efforts targeting LGBTQ+ materials and programming. Drawing from the book Censorship Is a Drag: LGBTQ Materials and Programming Under Siege in Libraries, the presenters—Jason D. Phillips, Jordan Ruud, Kestrel Ward, and Amanda Melilli—offer a comprehensive overview of the legal, political, and institutional pressures threatening inclusive library practices. Through case studies and firsthand accounts, the presentation examines the impact of both external censorship and internal resistance within libraries, and introduces the concept of “queer battle fatigue” to contextualize the personal toll on LGBTQ+ library professionals. Key topics include strategies for defending LGBTQ+ collections, the hidden erasure of queer content in archives, and the role of cataloging in discoverability. The session equips librarians with practical tools and critical insights to confront censorship, advocate for inclusive collections, and sustain their commitment to serving diverse communities in a time of increasing scrutiny

No full textAlthough some instructors are not allowed to use AI in higher education, 88% of students use AI for their higher education, according to the Digital Educational Council through the 2024 Global Student Survey. It is important to have flexibility and an open mind when adopting new ideas, especially when there is a huge impact on AI in education. In this manner, this session will share how the University of Rochester offers students learning through offering Virtual Teaching Assistants (VTA) across schools. Each VTA was set through a Learning Management System (LMS), so students are able to use it privately. Using VTAs in each course, students have the flexibility to ask any questions that are related to their courses and are able to study their exams 24/7. In this session, we will share a year-long journey of creating, developing, piloting, and launching across schools within the University. We will share details of the design, development, and deployment of VTAs, showcasing best practices, challenges, and successes
