Professional medical interpreters interpret conversations between patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and physicians. Given the important role professional medical interpreters play for LEP patients, current and future healthcare professionals would benefit from understanding their services and how to utilize them effectively. Research has explored how residents and physicians regard medical interpreters, but few studies have examined medical students\u27 knowledge and perceptions about them. This cross-sectional study investigated medical students\u27 knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding professional medical interpreters. The sample was comprised of Florida medical students. Participants completed a one-time, quantitative online survey collecting information regarding their medical training, demographics, knowledge, attitudes, and practices. A sample of N = 54 participants was obtained by snowball sampling. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to determine average scale scores. Students displayed good knowledge (M = 5.93, SD = 1.03), good attitudes (M = 21.57, SD = 2.12), and moderate practices (M = 17.59, SD = 3.13). Normality assumptions were tested and not met; therefore, nonparametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U) were used to examine differences in knowledge, attitudes, and practices across four variables: campus environment, instruction experience, gender identity, and ethnicity. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests revealed significant differences in knowledge, attitudes, and practices based on urbanicity, instruction experience, gender, and ethnicity. Pearson correlation r revealed a weak, positive correlation between the number of languages students speak and their attitudes scores, r(52) = .33, p = .014. This study’s exploration of this area provides a snapshot of the medical student population and their readiness for cross-cultural healthcare, particularly in using professional medical interpreters. Future research can further establish the baseline knowledge, attitudes, and practices of medical students. Practical applications of this research include filling gaps between knowledge/attitudes and practices through curriculum and training initiatives at schools, thereby preparing students to deliver culturally competent care in the future

Faith Amid Chaos: Does Religiosity Buffer Youth Delinquency in Disordered Neighborhoods?

    Get PDF
This study examines whether religiosity moderates the relationship between neighborhood disorder and delinquent behavior among juvenile offenders. Drawing on Social Disorganization Theory and Neighborhood Disorder, the study hypothesizes that religiosity, both as an attitude and as a behavior, serves as a protective factor against delinquency in disordered neighborhoods. Using data from the Pathways to Desistance study, this research employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression with and without interaction terms to assess how individual perceptions of disorder interact with religiosity in influencing minor and major delinquency. Results indicate a significant positive association between perceived neighborhood disorder and delinquency, reinforcing the notion that disordered environments contribute to youth offending. However, contrary to expectations, religiosity did not moderate this relationship, suggesting that its protective effects may not be sufficient to counteract the influence of neighborhood disorder among high-risk youth. Additionally, while religious attitude displayed a stronger deterrent effect on minor delinquency than major delinquency, religious behavior showed no significant difference. These findings challenge prior research that posits religiosity as a universal buffer against delinquency and highlight the importance of structural interventions over individual-level protective factors. The study concludes that while religiosity may influence moral development, its capacity to offset environmental criminogenic risks is limited, particularly among juvenile offenders. Future research should explore the role of religious engagement in different populations and develop multidimensional measures of religiosity to better capture its nuanced effects on delinquency

Does Money Matter? An Analysis Between Per-Student Funding and its Link to Student Achievement in Florida

    Get PDF
This study examined the relationship between per-student funding and student achievement within four counties in the state of Florida (Clay County, Duval County, Flagler County, and St. Johns County) and whether higher per-student funding resulted in higher student achievement. Florida recently changed from the usage of the Common Core Standards to the Florida Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) and from the Florida State Assessment (FSA) to the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (F.A.S.T.) test in 2022 (Sabina, Hartikka, and Viola, 2023). This research focused funding on the results of the F.A.S.T. test and the per-student funding of each district for the 2022-2023 school year. The results revealed is a negative correlation between per-student funding and student achievement as identified by the counties’ F.A.S.T. test scores. Specifically, results indicated that the higher per- student overall funding, the lower the aggregated district test scores. This finding leads to deeper questions, especially regarding the many variables that affect student achievement and learning gains. However, per-student state funding as a data point appears insignificant to the test results. One may assume that the distribution of increased funding does not necessarily result in higher student achievement, yet many variables may come into play

Controlled Experimental Design of Neurocognitive Delay of Alzheimer’s in Standard American, Mediterranean, and DASH Diet Research Proposal

    Get PDF
Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable illness of the neuronal system of which has been studied extensively The study presented intends to evaluate the effect of the MIND and the mediterranean diet in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the effect of the Standard American Diet on the development of it as well. Unlike many studies involving the effects of diet in the development of the disease in older populations, this study would involve UCF college students who are scheduled to graduate in 2030. The participants would be evaluated using the Cognitive Function Battery, a series of tests shown to be accurate in measuring cognitive ability in previous studies (Krueger et al.). It is expected, based on data from prior studies, that individuals utilizing the MIND diet will show greater cognitive ability.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025spring/1033/thumbnail.jp

GABA and Dopamine Dual Therapy: A Potential Treatment for A549 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

    Get PDF
Lung cancer is the deadliest and second most prevalent cancer in the United States, with approximately 230,000 new cases and 125,000 deaths reported yearly, according to the American Cancer Society. Annually, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Recent research has shown that GABA and dopamine independently induce apoptosis in lung cancer cells. Parameters such as LD50 and IC50 are essential to determine optimal concentration for human toxicity and CI analysis can be utilized to understand the synergistic interactions between two agents. In this research project, the relative effectiveness of GABA and dopamine dual therapy on lung cancer cells to induce apoptosis is examined using these parameters to evaluate whether a relationship between these two reagents can be established. Using quantitative cell counting and qualitative immunofluorescence microscopy, the optimal concentrations at which each reagent induces apoptosis can be identified. In the future, this knowledge can be used to develop more effective management strategies for lung cancer and ultimately further investigation into innovative therapies for NSCLC treatment.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025spring/1014/thumbnail.jp

Impact of Digital Marketing Budgets and Influencer Size on Sales Across Media Channels

    Get PDF
Digital marketing plays a crucial role in modern business, with strategies such as online promotions and influencer partnerships influencing sales performance. This study explores the correlation between marketing expenditures, influencer size, and product sales to determine whether these factors can reliably predict sales outcomes. Using the Marketing Promotion TV vs Radio vs Social Media dataset from Kaggle, we analyzed how different types of digital promotions impact sales. Our regression analysis examined the relationship between marketing budget allocation and influencer promotion size, incorporating first-order interaction terms between digital strategies. Residual plots indicated a strong linear relationship between radio advertisement spending and sales, with some outliers present. To improve model assumptions, we applied various transformations to the response variable, ultimately selecting the square root transformation as the best fit. These findings provide insights into optimizing digital marketing expenditures for better sales performance. With the settlement in the House Case finally being accepted by U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken, five years of litigation has come to a close. It might be tempting to say, “the other shoe has dropped.” Unfortunately, College Athletics is not a biped, but rather a centipede. It is likely then that hundreds of more shoes are yet to drop

Investigating the Persuasive Potential of Communicating with Generative Artificial Intelligence Chatbots for Mental Health: The Roles of Perceived Message Contingency, Cognitive Elaboration, and Issue Involvement

    No full text
With the ever-increasing adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbots in diverse communication roles, there is a burgeoning need to address how people process and respond to messages from these technologies. This study explores the theoretical mechanisms by which the use of GenAI chatbots influences persuasive outcomes related to mental health, examining perceived message contingency and cognitive elaboration as mediators, and issue involvement as a moderator between the two mediators. Through an experimental setting using ChatGPT, compared to non-conversational online resources, we discovered that GenAI chatbot use led to greater cognitive elaboration through an increased sense of message contingency, leading to greater mental health self-efficacy. The influence of perceived message contingency on cognitive elaboration was more pronounced among participants with higher issue involvement

Generative AI in Higher Education: A Comparative Study of ChatGPT Adoption, Perception, and Use among College Students in the Global North and Global South

    No full text
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have become the fastest-adopted technology, raising concerns about its misuse in education. This study explores ChatGPT usage for class assignments among 646 college students in the U.S. and Bangladesh, focusing on their perceptions and trust in the tool. Using the technology acceptance model, along with internet efficacy and social persuasion theories, we found that students in both countries had high levels of awareness and adoption. Individual factors did not significantly influence ChatGPT usage, while social persuasion, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and country were the strongest predictors. The findings suggest that AI technology may have a greater impact on student learning in the Global South compared to the Global North
