For decades, instructors, instructional designers, and others have used the tools and techniques of open education to improve access and affordability. The ongoing, rapid advancement of generative AI is offering a new set of affordances, creating new possibilities for innovating and improving education.
In this keynote, Dr. David Wiley will explore how the intersection of open education and generative AI might redefine the future of teaching and learning, learning materials, and instructional design. By re-conceptualizing AI tools like large language models in the context of open educational resources, educators have new opportunities to create and share both content and learning activities that are more affordable, effective, and meaningful. At the same time, generative AI brings familiar challenges, including worries about access and privacy, concerns over commercialization, and the need for transparency and ethics. Drawing on lessons from decades in the open movement, this session will consider how we can combine the participatory power of openness with the technical capabilities of generative AI to move toward a future that improves access, agency, and outcomes for all learners

The Protégé Effect: How Teaching Others Taught Me More
No full textThe purpose of my project was to explore and apply effective teaching methods in a large lecture environment of 400 students, with the goal of facilitating peer learning and improving student engagement. As a Learning Assistant, I focused on creating spaces within the classroom where students felt comfortable discussing concepts, asking questions, and learning collaboratively. Throughout the semester I learned various teaching strategies and used them in the classroom. What surprised me most was how these teaching practices began to influence my daily life. I found myself becoming a better communicator, listener, and problem-solver, not just in the classroom but in my personal interactions as well. This experience taught me that teaching is not just about delivering information, its mainly about knowing how to recognize the learning styles of the individual students for them to grasp the knowledge better and help their peers.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025spring/1015/thumbnail.jp
Pawsitively Making a Difference: A Culture Audit on Save a Life Pet Rescue
Get PDFThe purpose of our culture audit of Save a Life Pet Rescue was to evaluate the organization’s values, mission, and practices to understand how effectively they align with their stated goals. Our group applied the Social Change Model of Leadership, focusing on the 7 Cs—Collaboration, Common Purpose, and Commitment were particularly evident throughout our observations.
To conduct this audit, each group member volunteered 15 hours at weekend adoption events, where we assisted with animal care, adopter guidance, and event setup and breakdown. Additionally, we interviewed the organization\u27s director and volunteers to gain insight into their experiences and perspectives.
One key takeaway from this experience was recognizing how espoused values versus enacted values shape an organization\u27s culture. Save a Life Pet Rescue’s mission, as stated online, emphasizes saving and enriching the lives of dogs in high-kill shelters. Our observations confirmed that this mission is actively lived out through volunteer-driven efforts, adoption services, and pet welfare initiatives. Another key insight was the critical role of volunteer commitment—without dedicated individuals, the organization would struggle to carry out its life saving mission.
Overall, this audit highlighted the importance of community engagement and leadership in nonprofit work. By fostering a strong culture of service, Save a Life Pet Rescue successfully creates a lasting impact on both animals and adopters.

Get PDFA system for indexing, updating, and search haplotypes for genetic genealogical discovery in genotype databases. The system includes a pool of genetic indexes, a haplotype ingestion engine, and a haplotype query engine. The haplotypes of a number of individuals in a genotype database are indexed by a pool of multiple panels, and each panel pool can be dynamically updated by the insertion or deletion of individual haplotypes. A genetic genealogical search of a query haplotype against the database is achieved by first projecting the query onto a subset of panels in the pool, then conducting long match queries over each panel, and finally aggregating the identified long matches into Identical-byDescent segments, i.e., DNA matches, between the query and the haplotypes in the database
