Hope in Action: Serving Orlando\u27s Hungry and Homeless through Straight Street
This project focuses on working with Straight Street Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the homeless and those facing hunger in Orlando. Since 2009, Straight Street has provided over 200,000 meals to those in need, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Friday. Through this project, my team and I participated in distributing meals, and conversing with workers who gave us valuable insight into the work they do. This hands-on experience showed the impact that consistent community support can have on vulnerable populations. We learned how important it is to meet physical and emotional needs, and how meaningful connections with those being served can foster resilience and faith. Working with Straight Street has been an eye-opening experience that highlights the power of compassion and dedication in creating positive change.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025spring/1012/thumbnail.jp

Manipulated Workplace Hazing and Attributions
Workplace hazing has scarcely been researched, and when it has, the results have not always aligned. This study seeks to remedy the discrepant findings by examining the importance of hazing severity, as prior operationalizations of hazing severity utilizing the most frequently used and validated measure of workplace hazing do not adequately measure severity, as well as by introducing attribution theory to offer a potential explanation as to why some people respond favorably and others unfavorably to being hazed. This study utilized an experimental 2x2 factorial design with an added control group to examine whether the severity of the hazing and the attribution of the hazing impacted how the 198 participants reacted to the hazing. The attribution manipulation failed to adequately manipulate attributions of hazing, however analyses suggest that severity ratings and attributions are intertwined and impact how individuals respond to experiencing hazing. More research is needed to examine the impact of attributions due to the failure of the manipulation
Modeling Frameworks to Understand and Predict Land Use Type and Land Value Patterns in Florida
Florida’s population has been rapidly growing, with a 14.6% growth in population from 2010 to 2020. This growth in population has led to an associated increase in demand for housing and commercial establishments, which have resulted in changes in land use patterns across the state. For this dissertation, we focus on methods to qualitatively and quantitatively examine how land use patterns are likely to evolve under the expected scenario of population growth in Florida while explicitly allowing for interactions between demographics, transportation and land use patterns. In our first objective we build a simulation framework to predict land use evolution at the parcel resolution for the state of Florida. The framework employs data from previous years to understand the patterns in land use evolution and apply the learnings towards forecasting future land use patterns. In our second objective we focus on the Miami Metropolitan area and examine how land use evolution for residential and commercial land use occurs in relation to existing land use patterns, demographics and transportation infrastructure. In the third objective we focus on commercial land value per square foot in the Miami Metropolitan area. We use a hedonic price model with spatial interactions to identify land use patterns, demographics and transportation infrastructure that correlate with commercial land prices. In our fourth and final objective we focus on comparing property values in hurricane flooded areas as compared to similar areas that haven’t been as severely impacted, identifying in what ways property values differ, and therefore how economic growth has been impacted
Viability for Locally Monotone Evolution Inclusions and Lower Semicontinuous Solutions of Halmilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations in Infinite Dimensions
In this thesis we first study the necessary and sufficient conditions for differential inclusion driven by locally monotone operator in the sense of Liu and Röckner [J. Funct. Anal., 259 (2010), pp. 2902-2922]. The main result of our work provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a set K being viable, that is, a solution of the differential inclusion stay inside of the set K through out the time interval. We then examine the path-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations (path-dependent HJB equations) associated to the optimal control problem with states controlled by evolution inclusions. With our results on viability, we prove existence and uniqueness of l.s.c.~viscosity solutions, an appropriate nonsmooth solutions for the path-dependent HJB equation that only is lower semicontinuous. The wellposedness of l.s.c.~viscosity solutions leads to the characterization that the value function below is the unique solution to the path-dependent HJB equation
Molecular Basis for the Disaggregase Activity of Protein Disulfide Isomerase
Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is an essential, multifunctional, and promiscuous protein with a modular abb’xa’c domain arrangement. Conformational flexibility and the independent, yet coordinated, functionality of PDI domains facilitate protein folding, redox regulation, and the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Previous investigations have shown that PDI can inhibit amyloid β peptide aggregation, associated with Alzheimer\u27s disease, and is required for cholera toxin disassembly, the rate-limiting step in Vibrio cholerae pathogenesis. However, the precise mechanistic details underlying these interactions remain to be elucidated. Using molecular and biophysical approaches, this study has begun to establish substrate-induced unfolding, or conditional disorder, of PDI as the molecular basis for its observed disaggregase activity. This project proposes a unified mechanistic framework describing how PDI’s structural flexibility underlies its substrate-specific disaggregase function, offering novel insights into chaperone biology, toxin biology, and neurobiology. The significance of this research lies in highlighting PDI as a molecular target for therapeutic intervention in neurodegenerative disease and V. cholerae infection
