From Theme Park to Theatre (and Back Again): Spatial Transmedia and the Disney Musical
Get PDFThis paper explores the relationship between the in-park theatrical productions staged within Disney’s theme parks and Disney Theatrical Productions. It argues that overlaps between these two types of production offer a form of ‘spatial transmedia’ (Williams 2020) and that in-park theatrical productions of such shows (especially those versions of popular animated films such as Frozen or The Lion King) function as a form of transmedia ‘gateway’ to the productions within theatres on Broadway, in London’s West End, or across global stages (Bádue 2024). The paper focuses on two examples within Disneyland Paris’ Walt Disney Studios Park (WDSP); firstly Frozen: A Musical Invitation, a walk-through experience where guests move between different ‘sets’, on their journey towards seeing Queen Elsa. Secondly, it examines the Mickey and the Magician stage show that offers a mix of iconic songs and performances from a range of Disney musicals, functioning as a form of ‘Jukebox Musical’ that allows audiences to ‘participate in new pleasure by drawing out impressions on their favorite old songs in the past’ (Seo and Lee 2014: 188). The paper thus draws on work on transmedia storytelling and spatial transmedia to examine the affordances and challenges offered by Disney’s corporate synergy between its films, theme park spaces, and theatrical musical productions. It builds on this work to explore primarily how this works in practice in terms of the strategies that Disney employs to lead guests from one experience to the other, and how the different experiences offer forms of ‘spatial transmedia’ to the audiences

No full textThis entry describes a strategy to enhance student engagement in asynchronous online courses by embedding AI-generated quizzes into instructional videos. Using ChatGPT and video transcripts, the instructor created targeted multiple-choice questions that aligned with key video topics and improved interactivity. Results from the CGN5341 course showed increased video view duration, higher engagement, and positive student feedback on the usefulness of short, segmented videos with embedded quizzes
Breaking Barriers: Advancing Career Development in the Latino Community
No full textDespite being one of the fastest-growing demographic groups in the US, Latinos still face many obstacles to professional growth and advancement. Language barriers, systematic workplace discrimination, restricted access to high-quality education, and a dearth of mentorship and support networks that are sensitive to cultural differences are some of these challenges. This poster presentation explores the underlying challenges impacting Latino career trajectories, particularly through the lens of power and privilege. Historically, Latino workers have faced obstacles in obtaining fair employment opportunities, leadership roles, and financial security due to structural disparities, including discriminatory labor practices, restrictive immigration laws, and underfunded educational systems. Three main solutions are suggested to deal with these systemic problems. First, the growth of Latino-specific mentorship programs can offer vital direction, connections, and role models for achievement. Second, Latino job seekers will receive pertinent and efficient assistance if culturally competent career services are implemented in workforce centers and schools. Last but not least, starting a nationwide awareness campaign to support workplace diversity can change perceptions of Latino workers and promote more inclusive hiring and advancement procedures. Although there are currently initiatives in place, they frequently lack the breadth and cultural awareness required to be really successful. These tactics seek to create a more inclusive workplace where Latino professionals can succeed by addressing the underlying causes and adopting intersectional perspectives. In addition to being crucial for the health of the Latino community, addressing these issues helps create a more equitable, vibrant, and successful economy for everybody

No full textThis project aims to educate and shed light into the colonization and oppression of Palestinians that has been happening long before October 7th of 2023 as something more than a conflict. What Palestine is facing is injustice, ongoing settler colonialism and systemic oppression under a military occupation. Since the Nakba of 1948, the displacement, land theft, and violence that the Palestinians face continues while the world continue to be silent and complacent because of the aid of western forces like the United States to the Israeli military both by arms deals and monetary aid to the Israeli military. Many human rights have been violated as well as international laws that were overruled and vetoed because of the United States, that results in not holding the Israeli government accountable for their actions as an occupying power. Reflection and immediate change needs to occur to put an end to this ethnic cleaning and genocide that is being witnessed all over social media

Get PDFMy project, Uniting the Latino Community: Overcoming Disconnection for Collective Empowerment, aims to address the internal divisions within the Latino community in the U.S. caused by differences in nationality, culture, and socioeconomic status. These divisions can limit political power, create economic disparities, and increase social inequalities. The research explores the factors contributing to these divisions and identifies strategies to promote unity and collective advancement. While existing research often focuses on external challenges like discrimination, there is less focus on the internal factors that prevent unity within the community. By fostering unity, my project aims to enhance the Latino community’s social capital, political influence, and ability to advocate for common interests. One key lesson I learned is that promoting internal cohesion within a diverse group can have a powerful impact, not only for the group itself but also for the broader society, encouraging diversity and inclusion across the nation
