Examination Of Users’ Privacy Issues In Live Streaming Information Disclosure

    No full text
Live streaming has gained global popularity, raising significant privacy concerns due to its performance-driven, real-time, on-camera, and public nature. Increasing reports highlight privacy violations in live streaming, including streamers facing harassment from malicious viewers and bystanders being inadvertently exposed to audiences. Despite these challenges, research on privacy in live streaming remains limited. This dissertation addresses this gap by examining users\u27 privacy concerns and strategies in information disclosure and exploring design solutions to enhance privacy management on live streaming platforms. To achieve these objectives, I conducted three qualitative studies: two interview studies (Study 1: Chapter 4 and Study 2: Chapter 5) and one co-design study (Study 3: Chapter 6). Study 1 investigates streamers’ privacy concerns and management strategies in live streaming. Findings reveal that streamers are particularly concerned about disclosures that may affect their audience appeal or disrupt personal boundaries with viewers. They employ both platform-supported and self-developed privacy strategies to mitigate these concerns. Study 2 examines how streamers perceive and manage bystanders’ privacy. Results indicate that while streamers acknowledge the importance of protecting bystanders, existing platform features do not adequately support seamless privacy management or bystander involvement in privacy decisions. Study 3 employs a co-design approach, where streamers contribute to the design of privacy-preserving features for streamers, while both streamers and bystanders collaborate on the design of privacy-preserving features for bystanders. The study also provides design principles to enhance privacy protections for both groups. By offering empirical insights and design guidelines, this dissertation contributes to the understanding of privacy challenges in live streaming and informs the development of privacy-enhancing mechanisms for streaming platforms

    Get PDF
This project consists primarily of the interest in Video Based Learning (VBL) and understanding the impacts of a video based on the connections between John Coltrane’s song Acknowledgement on the Jazz suite A Love Supreme to the Civil Rights movement and systemic racism. Research confirms that VBL has an impact on student learning, yet this project finds that because of the content of the video, it fits into scholarship where there are gaps. The methodological approach, which was qualitative, found that students were overall enlightened, entertained, and were interested in learning more. Other findings include suggestions and recommendations for future videos. The purpose of this work is to enhance classroom engagement with students and utilize this work as a tool of agency to speak against government infringement on academic freedom in higher education and to highlight systemic racism

A Greener Way to Synthesize Biodiesel: Mechanochemistry with No Added Catalyst

    No full text
Biodiesel production is currently energy-demanding and produces large volumes of waste despite being marketed as a greener approach to fuel. Here, we report the development and analysis of a more environmentally friendly way of producing biodiesel via mechanochemistry. In as little as one hour, biodiesel can be produced by ball milling intact oilseeds with methanol and no added catalyst. The catalyst for transesterification of oilseeds and methanol via mechanical milling comes from within the seed shells, rather than needing to be added from a separate source. The metals found in the milling media interact with lignin in the seed shells, complexing it temporarily and imparting catalytic activity. Additionally, using intact seeds eliminates all seed pretreatments required in industry, thus reducing time necessary, waste production, and energy consumption. In the transesterification reaction, the large excesses of methanol typically used are significantly reduced during mechanical milling. Furthermore, soapy byproducts are not created in the mechanochemistry method, so the need for water to clean the product is eliminated. As the catalytic component of the reaction remains within the solid seed shells, it is also unnecessary to extract the catalyst from solution, such as in acid or base catalyzed transesterification. This makes synthesis of biodiesel via mechanochemistry greener and less cost-, time-, and energy intensive than industrial methods. In just one step, clean biodiesel is generated from untreated seeds. The solid waste, consisting of ground seed shells generated from ball milling, can also be used as an adsorbent for heavy metals including mercury, lead, and zinc. These metals can later be desorbed, providing both cleanup of metals- contaminated water and the potential to reuse these metals in products or in other chemical reactions

Application of Multi-Branching Narratives and Cooperative Gaming for Theme Park Rides

    No full text
This thesis examines the opportunities to combine video game concepts such as branching narrative games and cooperative games with interactive theme park rides or attractions. With the state of the contemporary themed entertainment industry explicitly defining the guest’s role to the context of the ride or attraction’s storyworld, there is a need to reassess the conventional forms of theme park ride interactivity to create a more dynamic narrative, gameplay experience, and guest or audience engagement. Through a brief analysis of relevant themed experience and video game references, this research proposes a cooperative theme park ride that utilizes a modified version of the branch-and-bottleneck branching narrative structure with a state-tracking system. Furthermore, this narrative structure and approach integrates a four-person group structure and role-based cooperative gameplay. This thesis showcases how the exploration of video game concepts, when integrated with theme park ride design, can provide opportunities to expand the borders of interactivity and narrative within ride experiences. The result is a creative design proposal, supported with research and imagery, that provides future designers a toolkit to develop interactive and gamified ride or attraction experiences that seamlessly integrate cooperative goal structures, role-based definitions, and branching narratives. The intent is to create variable story explorations and experiences that are enhanced by cohesive group gameplay to encourage guest re-rideability

Cloud Condensation Nuclei Activity of Fresh and Aged Phenolic Acid Aerosol Particles

    No full text
In recent years, the incidence of wildfires has considerably increased, with fire seasons starting earlier and ending later than usual due to changes in snowpack, precipitation, and temperature, which are attributed in part to climate change. Wildfires are responsible for the emission of a variety of gases and organic aerosol particles in the atmosphere with profound impacts on air quality, visibility, and human health. The aerosol particles produced by wildfires can contribute to climate change by scattering or absorbing solar radiation, affecting the radiative balance of the planet through cooling or warming effects, or by acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Phenolic acids aerosol particles are abundant products of biomass burning and have been often used as tracers for the type of biomass burned. Despite their abundance, little is known about their reactivity and CCN activity. Here, we report on the CCN activity of fresh and aged vanillic acid and syringic acid aerosol particles to assess their impact on the mechanism of cloud formation. The reactivity of vanillic acid and syringic acid aerosol particles with ozone and their CCN activity before and after the reaction with ozone is investigated in a flow tube reactor in conjunction with a high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer, a scanning mobility particle sizer, and a CCN counter. An atomizer and an electrostatic classifier are used to produce monodisperse aerosol particles from aqueous solutions of vanillic acid or syringic acid. The monodisperse particles are subsequently injected into the flow tube reactor and exposed to controlled amounts of ozone at a well-defined residence time. Although vanillic acid and syringic acid aerosol particles are found to slowly react with ozone, with effective uptake coefficients in the order of 10-7, the oxidation of both vanillic acid and syringic acid aerosol particles leads to an increase in their CCN activity. For instance, the CCN activity of aged syringic acid aerosol particles was found to be five times higher compared to fresh particles. This study emphasizes the importance of investigating the rate of change in CCN activity of phenolic acids under the combined effects of several atmospheric parameters such as oxidants and relative humidity to accurately describe their role in cloud formation

    No full text
Divorce often signifies the end of conflict in relationships that individuals no longer wish to continue. However, the impact of divorce on victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) is a topic that remains underexplored. This research investigates the extent to which individuals navigating divorce proceedings are victims of IPV and aims to illuminate their experiences within the legal system. The study delves into various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, and financial, while also addressing the challenges victims face in seeking assistance. Employing a mixed-methods research design, this study comprises a comprehensive literature review and an online survey targeting those either divorced or currently undergoing divorce proceedings. The findings reveal that a significant majority of the 53 respondents reported experiencing emotional and psychological abuse, with many indicating an escalation of abuse during the divorce process. Additionally, respondents highlighted systemic failures and a lack of support from law enforcement and the judicial system. These results highlight the urgent need for comprehensive training for judges, attorneys, and other legal professionals to support victims better. This research contributes to the broader discourse surrounding relationship dissolution, violence prevention, and advocacy for victims

A Signal Processing And Mechanical Design Approach To Understanding Triboelectric And Piezoelectric Nanogenerators’ Output

    No full text
Scalable energy harvesters—capable of converting motion into electrical output—provide promising solutions to increasing energy demands. This thesis was inspired by the potential biomedical applications of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG). In theory, these devices could convert mechanical energy from the body into usable electricity for self-powered electronics such as pacemakers or cochlear implants. In line with this goal, this project worked to design a sustainable and biocompatible PENG; however, early devices produced inconsistent voltage. These output inconsistencies motivated an exploration of device reproducibility, but characterizing piezoelectric output signals is a particular challenge in the field. Subtle to significant changes in the rate and amplitude of compression decrease the predictability of output peaks and exacerbate waveform irregularities. Further, recent discoveries highlight how triboelectric charge transfer complicates waveforms and, ultimately, the perceived output of piezoelectric generators. Thus, this thesis developed algorithms to characterize TENG, PENG, and hybrid output. The first algorithm exploits electrical peak periodicity to automatically isolate the peak compressive voltage in laboratory and human motion testing conditions. The algorithm can generate quantitative metrics regarding device output, isolate PENG and TENG signals from hybrid devices, and smooth out waveforms. The second program enhances a widely used material science instrument (TA.XTplusC) by expanding its frequency capabilities and offering precise control over frequency, force, and distance variables
