Understanding Women\u27s Access To And Utilization Of Syringe Service Programs
Get PDFAs of 2020, 138 million Americans ages 12 and over reported illicit drug use in their lifetime, with over 3 million of those people injecting drugs. There are risks for all people who use drugs, but people who inject drugs (PWID) pose specific risks such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with women who inject drugs (WWID) facing even more risks. WWID involved in sex work have a higher risk of HIV transmission and lack access to sterile injection devices and sexual and reproductive health services. To address these risks, syringe service programs (SSPs) were developed in the late 1980s in the United States to reduce blood-borne illness by providing a safe space to exchange and dispose of used needles and testing and counseling for blood-borne illnesses, depending on the location. Previous research has found that although the number of WWID is increasing, there is a lack of uptake of services provided by SSPs, especially among women with children, but there is insufficient research on the reasons. I performed a secondary data analysis using univariate statistics to describe the sociodemographic and substance use history among the women in the analytic sample. I also calculated these descriptive statistics stratified by women with and without children. This research will give insight into the potential differences between the uptake of resources from SSPs and the goals and needs of women with and without children. This data can assist SSPs in properly identifying and allocating resources for this critically underserved population
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cultural Stigma, and Identity Distress Among College Students
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cultural stigma, and identity in a sample of college-age students. Previous studies have primarily focused on children, yet few have examined ADHD as it persists into adulthood. Likewise, studies examining cultural stigma and identity were limited and primarily examined stigma toward mental health as a general concept rather than ADHD-specific attitudes. To address these disparities, a sample of undergraduate college students enrolled in psychology courses at a large metropolitan university (N = 339) were recruited and took an anonymous online survey in exchange for course credit. Based on a self-report screening survey, 20.4% of this sample would meet the criteria for ADHD, which is significantly higher than the 7.2% prevalence of ADHD in children and 2.5% prevalence of ADHD in adults reported in the general population. Participants who met the criteria for ADHD displayed significantly higher levels of identity distress and anticipated stigma and lower levels of identification with American culture as well as their respective ethnic cultures. Both ADHD symptom severity and ADHD stigma predicted reported higher levels of identity distress. Participants who reported higher levels of ADHD stigma also scored higher in ruminative exploration, suggesting that negative intrinsic attitudes and beliefs toward ADHD contribute to difficulties in establishing their respective identities
A Kinder Panopticon? Examining Effects of Fairness and Justice on Performance Outcomes Under Advanced Electronic Monitoring Systems
Get PDFThe adoption of Electronic Performance Monitoring (EPM) systems has increased with the prevalence of remote workers post-COVID. Research indicates EPM yields conflicting performance and behavioral outcomes. EPM-related behavior can be predicted by organizational justice (the extent to which workplaces are perceived as fair in nature); environments with higher justice ratings are less likely to induce issues like stress and distrust. However, advanced EPM like electroencephalograms (EEG) may modulate the relationships between perceived fairness, stress, and work performance. This study assigned 42 participants to a modified vigilance test (based on Temple, et al., 2001), which participants took under 3 placebo monitoring conditions: an unmonitored system, a webcam system, and an EEG system. They were provided with a personally relevant fair or unfair EPM policy explanation. In each condition, we examined task performance, self-reported technostress, and perceived justice. Results indicate advanced monitoring improves task accuracy (compared to unmonitored systems). Our findings support the idea that new EPM systems may provide novel advantages over existing monitoring, and that sufficiently advanced systems induce changes to work outcomes regardless of EPM policy. Interestingly, no correlation was found between monitoring format and perceived technostress, nor was there evidence that fairness of EPM policy affected perceived justice. These results may be influenced by individual differences in our participant population. They demonstrate a need to further explore how best to measure perceived workplace treatment, and its effects on work performance in experimental studies
Analyzing the Rate of Femicide of Indigenous Women in Rural Australia
Get PDFFemicide is an increasingly prevalent issue in Australia, with rates continuing to rise, especially among Indigenous women in rural Australia, who face compounded vulnerabilities. Within literature focusing on femicide, there is a noticeable lack of direct intersection between data on rural area and Indigenous Australians. This study investigates the relationship between rurality, Indigenous status, and femicide rates from 2018 to 2023. Data was compiled from the RED HEART Campaign, focusing on different demographic factors, including Indigenous status, location, victim-offender relationship, and cause of death. Frequencies and rates were calculated using descriptive statistics and data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 census. It was found that as rural area increases, rates of femicide of Indigenous women also rise. This indicates a positive relationship between these compounding risk factors and suggests requirements of policy to address Indigenous women in rural areas specifically
