Point of Care Ultrasound for Rapid Identification of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion and Subsequent Vision Rescue Utilizing Intravenous Alteplase
No full textCentral retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare but critical diagnosis to make in patients with acute vision loss. Cases of central retinal artery occlusion historically have a poor prognosis due to delayed presentation, lack of early identification, and limited effective treatment options. Due to these challenges, patients are often left with permanent loss of vision.
We present a case of a male patient in his late 70s with sudden onset of loss of vision to the right eye. Identification of CRAO was made utilizing point of care ultrasound (POCUS). After discussion with neurology, the patient was treated with alteplase resulting in restoration of vision.
Our case highlights the utility of ocular ultrasound in acute visual loss and serves as a reminder to clinicians to consider the time-sensitive therapies which may be available to patients suffering from CRAO
Unexpected Companions: Appendicitis and Bilateral Testicular Torsion
No full textAbdominal pain is a frequent chief complaint in the emergency department (ED), responsible for 5% of all visits yearly. Despite emergency room work ups, 25% of these cases go undiagnosed. In the pediatric population, abdominal pain can be even harder to differentiate with causes ranging from low acuity constipation to emergent surgical emergencies like torsion or appendicitis. During these visits, the likelihood of two emergent surgical diagnoses occurring concurrently is a rare and often overlooked occurrence.
This case describes a 15-year-old male with a chief complaint of nausea and vomiting starting several hours prior to arrival. In the ED, history, physical examination, and imaging were significant for appendicitis in the setting of bilateral testicular torsion. This case serves as a reminder to keep a broad differential and consider the possibility of multiple diagnoses at once

Classification and Evaluation of Machine Learning Algorithms on the MNIST Dataset
Get PDFThis paper discusses the use of machine learning algorithms in classifying the MNIST handwritten dataset. The MNIST dataset consists of 28x28 grayscale handwritten images with 10 classes from 0 to 9. The dataset was normalized by scaling the pixel values to a range between 0 and 1 by dividing each pixel value by 255. We compare and evaluate the K-nearest Neighbor and Naive Bayes algorithm based on performance metrics such as accuracy, error rate, f1-score, and precision. The K-nearest Neighbor algorithm achieved better performance in all the evaluation criteria
