    The Power of Listening

    No full text
For our service-learning project, our group volunteered with the 7 Cups program, which is an online platform that provides free emotional support and active listening to individuals around the world. The purpose of our project was to apply the leadership principles we learned in LEAD, such as empathy, communication, and dedication, to make a meaningful impact in the world. Through 7 Cups, we completed active listening and engaged in one-on-one conversations to support people seeking understanding and compassion. This experience taught us how powerful listening can be in creating connection and fostering emotional well-being. We also learned that leadership is not only about guiding others, but also about showing empathy, patience, and understanding.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1024/thumbnail.jp

The Algorithmic Public Sphere: AI-Generated News Site as a Conduit to Social Capital

    No full text
A growing body of scholarship on AI-generated news has examined its impact on various outcomes. However, less attention has been paid to the actual implementation of AI-generated news sites and their effectiveness on civic consequences. This study examines the effects of an AI-generated, community-centered, nonprofit news site on civic outcomes such as trust in nonprofit organizations, trust in AI-generated news, social capital, and civic engagement. Data was collected from participants at a large southeastern university who visited the AI-generated news site over a four-week period and responded to a series of open-ended questions weekly. A total of 721 open-ended responses were analyzed using content analysis, thematic analysis, and textual analysis. The results indicate that participants’ trust in nonprofit organizations and AI-generated news increased following exposure to the AI-generated news site. Furthermore, social capital and civic engagement levels also increased due to the AI-generated news site. Theoretical, methodological, practical, and policy implications are discussed

Preventive Neglect: How Healthcare\u27s Approach to Mild Cholesterol Elevation Fails Patients

    No full text
The majority of high cholesterol patients do not exhibit symptoms until they have a heart attack or stroke. It can lead to lifelong cardiac health issues. However, rather than being treated with early prevention, including lifestyle changes and dietary restrictions, mild cholesterol levels are often disregarded. In order to prevent long-term cardiovascular disease, this project emphasizes the importance of early nutritional counseling, patient education, and routine lab testing. It encourages a change from reactive treatment to proactive treatment. We can help patients identify high-risk health conditions earlier to lessen the overall effects of heart disease by increasing awareness.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1041/thumbnail.jp

Home-Based Exercise Programs for Recovery after TAVR

    No full text
The project titled “Home-Based Exercise Program for Recovery After TAVR” focuses on improving recovery outcomes in patients with heart valve disease, specifically those who have undergone Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). The purpose of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based exercise program, with and without Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CBI), compared to an educational control program. The study aimed to enhance patients’ physical functionality, quality of life, and recovery time after TAVR—an important consideration for older adults who may not be eligible for open-heart surgery. Key activities included interpreting a clinical trial. To be able to look at a clinical trial and understand the information given on a professional level is a skill that isn’t acquired so easily. We were able to learn what each category and number meant so we are able to understand the discourse going on between researchers. One key lesson learned was that recovery from lifestyle changes are achievable even with issues involving heart valves. Another key lesson learned was the value of integrating behavioral support into rehabilitation programs to improve patient motivation and adherencehttps://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1050/thumbnail.jp

My service-learning experience, conserving and restoring Canaveral National Seashore

Thomas Cole [email protected] 3177992 My service-learning experience, conserving and restoring Canaveral National Seashore During my time spent completing service learning course service-learning marine conservation and restoration.. I had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of projects that benefit marine conservation and restoration. These included mangrove gardening, Beach trash removal, constructing oyster habitat structures and a wading bird camera footage experiment. Each of these experiences relate to the conservation and restoration of Canaveral National Seashore. This National park is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, with 47 of those species being federally listed as special concern, threatened or endangered. Each service-learning experiences will help the park in a unique way. Planting mangroves restore essential nursery habitat for endemic species within the lagoon. By removing trash on the seashore at the International Coastal Cleanup Event, we can reduce future increases in plastic within the park and surrounding waters. The oyster habitat structures provide substrate, made from environmentally sustainable materials, which are then placed along the seashore where healthy oyster reefs once existed and are now less abundant. This new substrate provides essential habitat for settling oysters and helps to increase oyster populations, which leads to overall improvement in the lagoons water quality. The wading bird camera experiment provides valuable data about this park’s bird species, and how anthropogenic influences may be effecting the habitat in the park, which is home to a diverse group of wading birds, shorebirds and large numbers of migrating waterfowl.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1011/thumbnail.jp

When Clotting and Bleeding Collide: A Case of Bilateral PE and Concurrent Upper GI Hemorrhage

    No full text
Introduction Concurrent episodes of pulmonary emboli and gastrointestinal bleeding in one patient are not commonly seen. When a patient presents with both, it presents a challenge to manage as they are opposite ends of the same disease spectrum associated with the coagulation system. Case Report We present the case of a 65-year-old male who presented to our hospital via EMS with unknown prior history after a witnessed cardiac arrest, who on evaluation also had a concurrent bilateral pulmonary emboli with right heart strain. Why should an emergency physician be aware of this? While there is extensive research on the management of a PE and upper GI bleeding, there is limited data on concurrent management of both conditions. This case serves to explore the clinical dilemmas related to the management of patients with coexisting PE and an upper GI bleed
